Is anyone keeping up with ESO? How does Morrowind look? I haven't bought it because I haven't decided if it's worth filtering through the lazy lore and bland artstyle.

Supposedly Redguards are the most naturally talented warriors, but I'd imagine it's really all about the style and technique of what you're looking for in a warrior. An Orc or Nord would be better with armor and defending or using an axe, a Bosmer would be a better archer, and Imperials would be the most disciplined and be the best strategists.

I always took it as: Nords - Axes because they're slashing robbed elven mages and Orcs - Hammers because they're bashing armored Breton knights.
>>
>>53327084
According to Morrowind, The great size of Battleaxes helps to penetrate heavy armor, while still maintaining effectiveness against lightly armored opponents. Warhammers are mostly used by Western Knights.

In terms of gameplay, Orcs only receive a small bonus to one weapon skill and that's axe. They're designed to be more defensive, Redguards are more offensive, and Nords are in the middle with special defense against elements.

Why do Bretons have these disgusting forehead wrinkles in Skyrim? Did Bethesda mess something up with the age sliders, which wouldn't be all that surprising? Did they want to give the players a way of recognizing Bretons aside from just height? Or do you think there's an actual lore explanation for this?

If they wanted to differentiate them from other humans they could've just implemented their canon characteristics such as slightly pointed ears, higher cheekbones and sharper features instead of this tacky shit.
>>
>>53327758

Because they don't moisturize their foreheads.

I'd say it's probably for distinguishing, considering there are some pale Imperials and dusky Bretons who are the same height. Apparently they pilgrim during the Gildegreen quest is a Breton, although he looks like an Imperial.

As for the elven characteristics, that wasn't even implemented in Morrowind when you could tell what race someone was with their back turned to you. I wish it was implemented, but the closest we'll ever get is how gaunt their cheeks were in Morrowind.

They appear pretty rounded and normal looking to me. Like the rest of the humans.

Also, the more I'm looking at that picture the more I'm starting to think that Betsheda really did fuck up with the age sliders. It's not just the forehead wrinkles, they just look overall older.

You'd think they ought to be smoother and younger looking considering their mixed heritage, but apparently that's not the case.

The full sentence was "Only half Elven, he aged like a Breton." so I interpreted it that he aged like a normal human and was middle-aged in his fifties unlike an elf. Meaning Bretons have normal human life expectancy. At least I interpreted it that way, maybe they really do look naturally saggier for some reason.

Not lore related, but I heard you guys really like Morrowind. I've been considering making a mage and I have a few questions.

Which is better, Destruction, or using indirect means like Paralyzing and using Bound Dagger or Absorb Health?

How useful is Conjuration? If I were to focus on that, could I still use indirect means, or is Destruction and Conjuration just best together?

I've played Atronach a few times, but I never got to a high level with a mage without the Atronach. Will a Breton born under The Mage be enough, or should I stick to Atronach for defense, more magicka, and quick recharging with an ancestor ghost?

I'll probably go with light armor because Savior's Hide and DB armor, but how viable is Unarmored and Bound Armor? Would it just be better to use shield spells instead or in tandem with light armor?

I mean more in the spirit of Orcs are primarily meant to be defensive in concept.

How good a warrior is can vary, as there are many skills that can make a warrior. Someone who can block every single hit and perform adequately would be considered a better warrior than someone really good with a sword but can't block or defend worth shit. In the same sense, an Orc could be considered a better warrior than a Redguard due to survivability.

They make plenty of sense for guard duty. They make the guards faceless, anonymous avatars of the government's will, dehumanized (demerized?) and unfeeling. The mask's eyes never blink, it's focus never wavers. No flash of compassion ever crosses its features. It does not yawn. It does not smile. It watches everything and nothing at any time. It is monolithic and impersonal, fixed solely on duty. This affects the wearer as much as the watched.

All in all, a great deal for a repressive theocracy's secret police.

>Disables the buggy behaviour of blight storms. The game intended to give you blight diseases while you are in a blight storm. While the game added diseases, it never activated them, so no stat loss would occur; although to a script it could appear you were blighted. If the functionality was properly restored, it would give you blight several times per minute; turning it off seems like the best option.

Kind of interesting, was it actually meant to infect you that often? Think if they got it working before original release they would have added some kind constant effect dust adept helm or something?
>>
>>53328406
Little late but here is my pov.
Conjuration in the begining is mainly worth for bound weapons that are easy and cheap to cast. Spear provide so much reach that enemies can't hit you while bow and scavenged arrows makes racers easy target practise. Those weapons will never break, don't weight anything and raise primary combat atributes over time.
If you play atronach you really should use shrines instead of sumons to get that sweet mana back. Either join cult or temple for free service.
Unarmored for most part is inferior to other armor skills there is advantages as for bound weapons and works well combined with shield spells. You will switch to other armor type eventually thou.
Don't be afraid of booze, just learn when to drink which one.
Cont.
>>
>>53342262
Cont.
Destruction is strongeston vulnerable enemies so focust on fire/spark on undead/daedra and cycle custom weakness spell between dmg ones. Also ranged dmg stamina is pretty useful combined with unarmed.
Paralis is quite costly for what it does, it's main advantage beside no retaliation is guarantied hit roll. It up to you to figure out if it fits in your character playstyle.
Do however make custom noise spell. Making other characters fizzle their spells is best way to defend against magic second only to 100% resistance.
Absorb spells works fine as long as your enemy does not have high resist/reflect/absorb. If they do swith to summons or unenchanted weapons.
All for now.

Because while they're the most generic and obviously history-inspired faction, they're also very relatable and have some interesting lore if you dig a little. They are a rather unique halfway point between humans and elves, if nothing else. And there's nothing more exciting than forty-ish kingdoms and all their trade relations, cultural differences, and political maneuvering and outright warfare.

I'm still a little mad about how ESO slapped some generic celtic symbols on a medieval european setting and called it good, but what can you do? Force them to play Daggerfall so they can create the appropriate lore references and throwback designs?

Pretty sure the Redguards have been influencing and influenced by the nearby Bretons and Imperials. I think somewhere around the point that they first started trading, they realized they didn't have to kill everyone.

It would be awesome if, while everyone was expecting Skyrim to become the new human kingdom, the Redguards ended up actually uniting to resist the Thalmor, and drew the Imperials to their banner who were tired of acquiescing to the Thalmor's demands and recognized that the Redguards could pull off a victory. They could claim themselves as allies/successors to the Empire rather than in opposition to it, sort of a not!Sultanate of Rum. They could even bring back Ebonarm.

De Rerum Dirennis can't have been written before 3E 403, and it makes it clear that the Direnni are still around. Medora might even still live as of Skyrim.

The Direnni are pretty cool, but I'd never play one in vidya or on tabletop. It's a bit like playing a Tharn or a Camoran, it's way too snowflakey to be from one of the important families in the setting.

The Bretons, are descended from the original Nedes of High Rock.
Cyro-Nords were never in High Rock, they are the precursors of the Nibenese and Colovian peoples. You may be thinking of the Nords who settled during their conquests and got BTFO by the Elves in the 4th century.

There's some nice lore on Redguard holidays from Daggerfall.
>As any schoolchild could tell you, the Redguards are a relatively new culture to Tamriel. Their arrival from their homeland is actually well recorded, though it occurred several thousand years ago, in the 808th year of the 1st Era. Hammerfell was a great desert encompassed by almost impassable mountains -- unclaimed and unwanted. Many of the holidays extant in modern Hammerfell seem to be direct translations of older Redguard festivals before their migration to Tamriel.
>The orgiastic seasonal celebrations seem unusual in a province with few changes in the weather from month to month. Yet on the 28th of Suns Dawn, the Redguards of the Banthan jungle celebrate Aduros Nau to relieve the wintertide lethargy; on the 1st of Mid Year, the people of Abibon-Gora celebrate Drigh R'Zimb in honor of the sun, which no normal Redguard worships in this day; similarly, on the 29th of Suns Height, the festival in the Desert called Fiery Night, seems almost perverse in such an environment; the Koomu Alezer'i on the 11th of Last Seed in Sentinel has been translated as a harvest thanksgiving, though many scholars have suggested that it was once a springtide holiday; similarly, the Feast of the Tiger in the Bantha on the 14th of Last Seed was probably once a religious holiday to a Tiger God, instead of a thanksgiving.
>>
>>53346789
>Other old Redguard holidays have either been acknowledged as part of the old culture or adjusted to fit with the climate of Hammerfell. The Serpent's Dance, for example, of Satakalaam is patently an old festival honoring a Serpent God of the homeland who evidently did not survive the journey to Hammerfell. The significance of the date, the 3rd of Suns Dusk, has been lost with the Serpent Priests. Baranth Do, on the 18th of Evening Star, and Chil'a, on the 24th of the same month, are both New Years festivals. Most likely, they have been moved from their original dates to correspond with the notion of the year defined in Tamriel.
http://en.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Holidays_of_the_Iliac_Bay

I like the whole idea of Redguards still celebrating adapted versions of old Yokudan holidays.
It's like a semi-lost culture, where rituals are still performed even though they're not totally sure what they're for, and they no longer really match up with the seasonal events they're intended to be for.

I thought they were more of a clan than one large family, and still had several families across the towns and villages of Direnni. It's not as specific as just one family, and they used to own the whole of High Rock, right? Can't just be one family.

And it's an interesting way to explain why a high elf might be in High Rock or Hammerfell or something like that, without having them be from the Summerset Isles or just having lived in whatever province you're playing in.
>>
Does anyone have a pic of Vivec with XXXTentacion's hair?
>>
>>53347724
>I thought they were more of a clan than one large family
It's a bit of both, I'd imagine.

Vorian Direnni describes it as a family, the line of Asliel Direnni.
It's very much a family where the important leaders and heads are related to each other. Medora Direnni is the grandchild of Imperial Battlemage Jovron Direnni, who was himself a great great grandson of Pelladil Direnni, battlemage to Versidue-Shaie. And his ancestor was Raven Direnni.
So I think it's safe to say that there's very much a Direnni family, that's at the core of their entire history.

That said, they're also described as a clan, but I think that's more in reference to the extended family, distant branches, and perhaps even families they've tended to intermarry with. Then there's other Altmer who have joined forces with the Direnni at some point, and even at a point an influx of Ayleid refugees. There's even non-Altmer retainers, like Chimere Graegyn.
Not everyone is the Direnni Hegemony was Altmer, and not all Altmer in the Direnni Hegemony were actually Direnni. Especially not THE Direnni of Ada-Mantia.

>they used to own the whole of High Rock, right? Can't just be one family.
The Habsburgs were "just one family".
>>
>>53347724
>and they used to own the whole of High Rock, right? Can't just be one family.
The term 'Direnni' is often used as a misnomer. There were many Elven clans in High Rock, the Direnni just happened to be the ruling clan. And this is only after 1E 355, mind you, before then there was no Hegemony, and High Rock was as divided as it has always been.
>>
>>53348038
>And this is only after 1E 355, mind you, before then there was no Hegemony, and High Rock was as divided as it has always been.
The Hegemony started fracturing after 1E 482 too. For a merish realm, they didn't stay at the height of their power for very long.

>>
>>53348130
Well if we're referring to the actual 'Merish realm' of High Rock, they did manage to outlast their Falmer and Ayleid counterparts by a couple of centuries.
The collapse of Elven rule in High Rock was likely inevitable, the Hegemony was just too little too late.
>>
>>53348130
They had a whole underclass of Bretons underneath them, though. An underclass that was growing in power and influence as the Direnni waned.

Pretty sure there's something deeper to the fact that any Merish realm with a underclass of another race eventually suffers - Aylieds, Direnni, even arguably the Dunmer - but I can't put my finger on it. Though aside from the Wood Elves, I think most elves keep some sort of underclass - even Altmer have goblin slaves - so maybe it's not a hard and fast rule as much as 'most mer have other races as underclasses.'

The Skaal came from a time back when the Nords were supposed to have very primitive religious practices. Their religion isn't monotheistic it's animistic, they believe that all things in some essence posses a spirit and that these things are all connected (through the All-Maker). Their belief system has not evolved to the point of worshiping greater personal spirits with specified spheres, rather they look to basic root concepts like 'Earth,' 'Wind,' 'Sun,' and 'Beasts.'
What is truly nonsensical is having all the Nords worship the Imperial Cult, much less any form of institutionalized religion.

Which one do you prefer /tgesg/?

>pretty much everyone in Tamriel (during the Septim Empire) is potentially capable of spellcasting (provided that there is no exceptional flaw in that person), magicians are a relatively common sight in both urban and rural areas (though different types like court wizards, battlemages and hedge wizards exist). Very unnatural and dangerous Monsters are known to exist and are familiar to general populace. Wizardry is seen by humans as a career choice (like how education in a university was in the very early 20th century) rather than following an alien lifestyle (like in European folklore). Religion encompasses spellcasting, magic is seen as a tool or gift rather than a purpose or curse.

>for both men and mer, magic is a goal to be achieved only through a combination of considerable effort and natural affinity. The races of Tamriel are not really capable of the special powers (eg.frost punch of nords) like in games. Most non-metropolitan people live lives away from magicians and monsters that are not considered natural fauna (eg.undead and daedra rather than cliff racers or giants). Training in magic requires serious dedication (like ascetic lifestyle or beimg brought up in a culture based entirely around magic like Altmers). Most healing is done by herbalists and surgeons rather than restoration casters. Temples and churches are not places of magic, rather, often simple communities where the priest just maybe knows a few magic tricks. Human armies are almost entirely non-magicians.

I'd go with the first, but prefer something like a sort of mix between the two, where anyone can learn magic if they really tried, but it's very difficult, putting a lot of people off attempting it. So while there are many mages, it's not that common a sight.
>>
>>53336726
No.
They are best decedents of Aedra. We, humans, were corrupted and our Altmer brethren will lead us to restore our glorious ehlnofey legacy.
>>
>>53355705
The games seem to prefer the former. The only exception might be Skyrim, where some people really don't trust magic and in places like Morthal really fear wizards. The best case is probably 1 in the cities, and 2 in small towns or more backwater provinces. Just as a town of 400 people probably doesn't have many PhD grads, a small village in Tamriel should have basically no wizards, unless something is very special about it, like it is secretly a daedric worshipping cult or a witch coven.
>>
>>53356921
Also keep in mind that Nords already distrusted magic, and the vast majority you meet are peasants.
>>
>>53353976
Why do Yokudaboos exist? Is it the fucking Hammerfell stone carvings?
>>
>>53355996
Morrowind is the first, Skyrim is the second.

In Morrowind, magic is so common that the game even says there's no reason for you not to expend what magicka you can. Mages are so common that the Mages Guild is in almost every town, and most adventurers and commoners who aren't mages stop on by to buy some goods or use Guild Guides regularly. Almost anyone can tell you what a Daedra or a Bonewalker is, hell one of the temples has a permanent Dremora standing by the rock. The gods of magic include Julianos, Magnus, and Sotha Sil.

In Skyrim, next to nobody uses magic. Racials are toned down considerably. The only institute of mages is one far off in a one horse town that's destroyed. Alchemists are normally where people who are sick go instead of the temple.

For the most part the former, most people are likely somewhat familiar with seeing or being around it (temple healers), but unless they practice and learn spells they aren't going to be good at it and/or able to do it. I can't say I'm very happy with most of ESO's armor choices, but at least the Breton helmet looks nice. It even reminds me vaguely of Morrowind armor, a mix of iron or steel. Even the armor as a whole is mostly okay, if a little generic. Well, very generic. I can't explain why it looks generic to me, but it does.

Most of the other races, I can't forgive the armor choices. They don't look like how they've been depicted in the past at all, though the Argonian set is at least alright. You could switch around half the armor sets with little difference.

Does anyone know what Helseth and Morgiah are doing by the time of Skyrim? I'd imagine Morgiah's been deposed as Queen of Firsthold, and Helseth, being a Hlaalu, has been ousted as King of Morrowind.
>>
>>53359324
You telling me a kettle is "at least alright"? Most races have great armour yet Argonians stand out because pic related.
>>
>>53360254
We don't know. We don't even know how long their mother stuck around.

Helseth was probably ousted, if not outright banished.
I can't imagine Morgiah giving up her throne alive. Though, with the rise of the Dominion, I wouldn't be surprised if she's been assassinated.

What's interesting is that I'm not sure they'd have anywhere to go, were they still alive. Hlaalu aren't very welcome in Morrowind, they're unwanted in Firsthold, and they were forced out of power in Wayrest. There's no obvious safe haven for either of them. Cyrodiil, maybe?

It's obvious they're basing it heavily on some sort of Aztec/Maya design. It looks like one of those headdresses without the feathers, so I'll forgive it.

The others just all look kinda meh. They look solid as armor, but they don't stand out, they don't really look as intricate as some past armors have looked - even Skyrim, a game where I've come to dislike most of the armor design, at least stands out.

Truly a epidemic to rival the Thrassian Plague.

But even this Yokudan-style robe has very prominent hip-flaps. Perhaps it's something the Yokudans brought to Tamriel. This may be older than first imagined.
>>
>>53360898
But in every culture? In every kind of armor?

These are supposed to be culturally different factions and all, right? You'd think there'd be more obvious distinctions between armor types, instead of all looking like vaguely western plate.
>>
speaking of epidemics
how exactly does disease work in the mundus? are there actual pathogens that cause them or is it all magical? does a cure-all "cure disease" potion even exist? judging by the thrassian plague and the knahaten flu i'm guessing that outbreaks are still possible and shit like that exists as a game only thing

Surgery and healing as a whole are pretty vague
The old veteran in Soltitude lost his eye in the Great War and the temple of Kynareth in Whiterun had trouble with keeping up with the casualties
But every ingame character can regenerate and even be healed from the brink of death, with no permanent injuries
In the case of being healed it only takes mere seconds
As far as I know, none of this is ever explained. So i think its just a differencd between mechanics and lore

Bit of shame if you ask me. But I guess that is the problem you have when Restoration exists.
It greatly diminishes the risk of combat and life in general
It would be cool if Restoration as a school didnt exist and that actual surgery would have to take place. And that that surgery would be augmented by application of other schools, such as causturizing wounds with destruction

Well you can still have people that are bad at magic and can't into Restoration. And a good way to make surgery relevant is say if you have fractured or misplace bones and flesh that just wont heal right. I imagine Restoration being just kicking your natural regeneration into hyper gear. And as we know the body can't heal everything by itself and if you can't get treatment in time it still leaves a scar. The veteran did say he was abandoned by the others. And alchemy is just channeling ingredients natural magical properties so I'm guessing it works the same and regular magic.

Argonians would be better at robbing storages and generally hoarding stuff whiles Khajiit will steal more from people(pickpocket) and breaking in apartments via roof and windows apartment.
