Does anyone have any stray information on the unreleased Battle of Black Fire Pass book? It was supposed to be released in 2013 but probably got permanently shelved for reasons. Art, models, and written story were made to some extent already, but I'm wondering if we could contact someone who worked on it to see if this information can be retrieved.

Hmm, I remember early on the FW Empire command set was called an Averland command set and you can see the banner still has the sun emblem on it. Probably related to this but was reused when it wasn't released.

Does anyone have a link to the WFRP 2e career paths supplement? I didn't even know such a thing existed but ready an archived WFRP thread and it's referred to as a supplement to fix the poor pathing of the FFG Career Compendium book.

And please do not tell me to check the resource pastebins, I made those.

Where are they mentioned in the fluff? Not even being antagonistic, I haven't seen it at all. I've only heard second hand mentions of it in Black Library books, and I've never seen any of them myself. I'd like to get a source on this stuff.

And remember, the Squires thing might just be a thing of crunch, not of fluff. It'd be hard to make rules for the Bretonnian system as is, which is basically 'once a noble kid is old enough he becomes a Knight Errant.' It wouldn't work well for the RPG. I think if they had wanted to seriously include squires, they would have included them more in the fluff of the RPG - not just in the career compendium, but in Knights of the Grail itself.

That last thread was pretty shitty either way. I don't know why squires vs. not squires is becoming such a big issue now all of a sudden.
>>
Thoughts on Cubicle 7 potentially resurrecting WHFRP? What would you like to see from a new edition?
>>
>>52811561
As far as I know there is nothing "potential" about it. Word is that they bought the rights already and that FFG ceased support at the end of February. I was expecting an official press release from Cubicle 7 on March 1st but obviously that didn't happen, so I am a bit confused frankly.

Though I haven't played any of their games I hear The One Ring is excellent.

well this was in last thread. it confirms squires in 3 places and claims they dont have them a third. the short story is all about a squire becoming a knight

also the newest canon source in existence for Bretonnia has squires and there is also older lore with squires too

its only a big issues because one or two anons are being so obstinate about it

squires were in 5th edition for sure and i dont think they were ever retconned, just ignored

Wasn't Squires just the term they used to use for Yeomen? There was a more hopeful note that they could become a knight themselves with good service, instead of the newer fluff where that's a pipe dream, but otherwise not much has changed - they're still all commoners.

>Yeomen are a completely different thing, and are described as such. They are some sort of elite man-at-arms contingent, who get invested with scouting duties. Nothing like the personal servants of the knights being given weapon and asked to follow their masters on the battlefield.

>The fact that 6th edition doesn't explicitly talk about Squires does in no way make them automatically retconned. 6th edition was one where all armies saw their rosters drastically reduced in choices. Empire didn't have playable Steam tanks in 6th edition; that didn't mean Steam tanks had been retconned out of Empire lore for the time being, it just meant they were playable.
>>
>>52810050
Posting my homebrew again. Would you play it? Do you want me to stat the various war machines?
>>
>>52812018
But Squires didn't come back after 6th edition, whereas the Steam Tank did. And while no one replaced their role as archers or skirmishers, their role as light cavalry was replaced by Mounted Yeomen. Arguing that Squires still exist in such a manner is like arguing that Bretonnia still gets access to gunpowder weapons. In fluff terms, while Squires seem to be treated as personal servants of knights, they don't seem too dissimilar from the elite Men-at-Arms that Yeomen are - notice that Squires are 'the fittest and youngest of his retinue,' while in the Men-at-Arms fluff it says 'every Knight must maintain a retinue' referring to the Men-at-Arms. The main difference seems to be that Squires are more equipped for hunting and skirmishing, where Yeomen aren't said to be involved in those duties.

And what's with the greentext? Are you quoting an article written by someone, or was that just an accident?

>I don't know why squires vs. not squires is becoming such a big issue
it's a fundamental detail of Bretonnian Culture.
>>
>>52815878
That looks fantastic - that bit of river or swamp is especially beautiful, but you did a great job overall. Good enough to display, simple enough to actually play.

I find it interesting how the lore of the Black Coach gives the vampires a sort of immortality - as long as they have a body, they could be revived with enough Dark Magic. So it's probably not actually that big a deal for a vampire to come back from the dead.

>>52816001
It's a fundamental detail that no one seemed to argue about until last thread. Seems weird to me. Better than AoS arguments though.
>>
>>52813556
Eh, if there are going to be Southlanders in the Old World, having them as sailors makes the most sense.

>>52814938
My group started using it but mostly reverted to the Old World Armoury prices, even though they're worse. Mainly because that price list isn't that well geared towards the equipment featured in the rules. For instance, a career might require 'medium armour' in the trappings, but that becomes mostly interpretation.

WFRP really needs a total economic overhaul. I've tried doing it a couple of times, but it's a big job and remarkably complex. Hopefully WFRP 4e does the job from the ground up.
>>
>>52815967
I ordered a custom 150x50mm MDF base from Back2Base-IX:

http://back2base-ix.com/150mm-x.html

The rest of it was all me. I came up with a special technique for casting the water, by hot-gluing some chunks of old CD case to the base and cork to form the mold. Once the epoxy was set I peeled away the hot glue and sanded it all down with wet sand paper technique and fine grit paper (I also painted a bit of 'Ardcoat over the edges to give them a clear, polished appearance). The bridge is dowel rods and popsicle sticks, and the stones on the road are sculpted from Apoxie Sculpt.

No one argued because everyone went with it as they preferred, but now that people have gotten so divisive about it, it won't ever be settled.

If you like Squires, let your Knights have Squires, if not, then don't.
>>
Bretonnia 8th edition army book:

"SQUIRES AND MEN-AT-ARMS"

"Every Knight always has several Squires. Mounted and on foot, in his retinue. These are chosen from the best of the men-at-arms and bowmen or may even be the Knight's own sons."

"Battle pilgrims also have a host of mundane roles in their Grail Knight’s service, such as ordering the breaking or making of camp, acting as a knight’s aide or squire as needed..."

In 3rd and 4th edition Brets had "retainers", in 5th these were names Squires, in 6th Yeomen replaced but stats were were nigh identical to Squires (though 6th was very heavy handed on the no-peasant shall become a knight thing), and in 8th while there is no unit of Squires there is repeated mention of Squires so it's fairly safe to assume they fight alongside the rest of the knights retinue in whatever role they are best at be it with the men-at-arms, archers, skirmishers or scout cavalry.

Which to be honest makes a lot more sense than just grouping all the Squires together into one unit.

It seems the best way to reconcile the conflict is to say that squires do exist, but the role is not that of a junior knight but instead merely a servile one, although young nobles may serve in the role before they are of age.
>>
>>52816743

The game goes off rather unremarkably. Despite finishing deploying far, far later than the ogre, skaven win the dice and go first.

HPA rolls 17 on his movement and ends up rather close to the mournfang cavalry

Unremarkable magic phase.

Shooting phase take a couple of leadbelchers and plain ogres out (plus 2 clanrats from ZZAAP)

Ogres turn he charges into the HPA with the mournfangs. The stonetusk fails frenzy and charges into the (non hero-manned) slaves, which resist terror and receive a charge to the face.

Bulls try and fail to charge the DOOMWHEEL (needed a 9 and ended out with a 6)

Magic phase goes quite plain, except he gets through the panic test on one the cannons, which it promptly fails.

One unit of Leadbelchers causes some casualities to the slave unit with the engeneer, not enough to test.

I forgot to write he also had an Ironblaster. One cannonball takes out 2 rogres. Ouch.

Combat goes as planned for the slaves (12 casualities, steadfast helds them there).

The HPA goes terribly unlucky, as it fail 3 reg saves from impact hits, fails to kill any of the mournfangs, and then rolls a 12 to not break from combat. It actually doesn't get caught and flees off the battleground.

----------------

Second turn.

The DOOMWHEEL charges into the bulls. The Rogres fail to charge the leadbelchers.

Magic phase he uses the Dispel Scroll on a cracks call amed at his stonetusk, howling warpgale gets thorugh, as does death frenzy on the slaves.

Shooting phase the DOOMWHEEL obliterates 3 bulls. One lucky cannon shot kills the Ironblaster, another not so lucky cannon shot causes 2 wounds on a single ogre.
Warpfire throwers start to shine. One eats up a couple of leadbelchers, the other kills a mournfang, the third one misses. Gutter runners fire at the Stonehorn, to no avail.
>>
>>52816857

Close combat: even a rather tame stonehorn turn, slaves unfortunately fail (twice) their LD9 test. Stonehorn in charge position on my stormvermin flak. The DOOMWHEEL obliterates the remaining 4 bulls, killing 2 by sheer impact hits. Mows down the last one by pursuing near the leadbelchers.

Ogre turns starts with a combined front + flank charge from the ogres + the stonehorn on my stormvermin. As this actually puts them all together in a row, I hold my ground hoping to mow them down with cannons next turn.

He also reveals his ambushers, but fails on both rolls.

Mournfang fail a Ld test and are limited to reform themselves.

Magic phase he gets trough regeneration on the ogres. Ouch.

Shooting phase the Leadbelcher fire against the doomwheel (causing 2 wounds) and against the Rogres (to no avail)

Close combat is a slaughter, the stormvermin units gets obliterated along with my bsb. However the pursues are quite bad for him.

--------------------------------

Third turn

The DOOMWHEEL hits the leadbelchers into the face, while Rogres charge the second leadbelcher unit.

I detatch my Grey Seer from his unit (which is in front of the ogres and stonetusk), and put him on the side

Magic phase goes just as planned as he fails to dispel my Crack's Call, which eats away 3 ogres and the Stonetusk.

Shooting phase the brass orb gets another 2 ogres, two of the WLC chew the remaining ones. The unit at this point is composed of 2 ogre, his general and the BSB.

One cannon has a meltdown, another hits the mournfang at 0 strenght and the third actually has no target tho shoot at.
Gutter runners get into position to fire at gorgers.

Close combat is another glorious DOOMWHEEL slaughter, as it mows down the leadbelchers. It overruns...into the Gutter runners. Ups. Kills half of the unit, and they predictably fail their ld test.
Rogres with the 2 lords reduce to rablle the leadbelchers, but are forced to overrun.
>>
>>52816924

On his third turn both gorgers show up. He charges clanrats which stay and try to weather it down. they won't

Mournfang cavalry is getting back into the actual "hot zone". At this points he has only mournfangs, 2 gorgers and his 2 heroes left, I have a nearly-full slave unit, one units of clanrats, 2 units of Grunners, the rat ogres and two cannons.

On his magic phase he gets through the panic test on my lone seer, which runs away a spectaculat 13 inches and off the board. The mournfangs' breath weapon banner kills a arpfire thrower.

Combat is rather short, he mows down clanrats as if they were slaves, and chooses to reform himself to face the DOOMWHEEL.

--------------------------------

On my turn 4, I charge the ogres with the Doomwheel. One cannon manages to move out of sight from the gorgers, one does not.

My magic phase is non-existant.

On my shooting phase, disaster struck as the DOOMWHEEL suffers a misfire and explodes. Same fate goes for BOTH remaining warpfire throwers. The cannon who did not move tries to snipe at least one hero but fails. Gutter runners do not manage to kill gorgers.

From this onward, just a quick recap since it was very late and we became sloppy:

One cannon died in combat with a gorger, one gorger was killed by Grunners, mournfangs mowed down by Rogres.

We ended up me with a surviving skavenslave unit, and engeneer, half ratogres, two lords and a surviving gutter runner unit.

He had a gorger, both his heroes. However he got both my BSB and my general, so we were around even in points

there is lore and rules that squires become knights. the end.

you are fine to do something else in your games if you want but stop pushing your shitty headcanon onto others. by definition a squire is something that becomes a knight. you may as well be arguing that bretonnian archers dont use bows and arrows and all mention of it in lore and rules are just mistakes ;^)

>there is lore and rules that squires become knights. the end.
And there's also evidence of the opposite. Which is why there's an argument, matey.

Given that conflict, you can either choose whichever one you want to think is true (which was the case anyway), or you can try to reconcile the differences.
Even the 5th edition book mentions that Bretonnian squires are commoners, not nobles. See >>52811890
>>
>>52819223
>reconciling the difference in a one sided way

of course you can choose whatever you want for your game but my point was that was a shitty compromise. a better way to do it is to say there are multiple paths to knighthood, with nobles getting it instantly most of the time and poorer nobles or peasants (or maybe the middle class thats sometimes talked about) having to be squires which is pretty much how it was in real life anyway

also in other places it mentions that even the Knights sons may be his squires. i think that comes after 6th edition and its hardon for no peasants getting to be nobles

I have a lore question. After their death/destruction, can standard Tomb Kings skeleton warriors be raised by another necromancer? Or are they somehow bound to Nehekhara, their priests and their magic?

I am making VC zombies/skeletons from various factions and I'm wondering if putting there some spare skellies from the warsphinx set makes sense.
>>
>>52821016
GW retconned the incest and the illegitimate claim in 8e and made him the one true king and a child molester.

Although since he fathered most of every generation of Dark Elves generation after generation its still incest, just with his daughters instead of his mother.

Well, we can't assume without evidence that GW ever intended to bring Squires back in a later armybook, so all we can really logically conclude is that the 6th edition rulebook and it's lack of squires was supposed to continue well into 7th or 8th, or they would have made a change.

Though if someone had a lot of time, they could probably try to look for mentions of the Steam tank in the fluff even when it wasn't in the rules, and try to see how much fluff there was comparatively - did the Steam tank, that eventually came back, have as much fluff and prominence in the lore as Bretonnian squires?

Please excuse the poor quality of the photo-- I took it using my phone and I don't have a tripod handy.

I'm working on a whole Vampire Counts army for myself and these are the finished units I've got so far. It started out with just a starter army box containing a corpse cart, skellingtons, dire wolves and crypt ghouls, but once I got bit by the bug I kind of went crazy and just started getting whatever looked cool.

In the "mostly painted but I need to finish" category I've got 10 Black Knights, and 20 zombies, and 20 crypt ghouls. In the "primed but not painted" category I have 3 fell bats (third party models), Vlad Von Carnstein, Krell, and in the "not assembled or painted" category I have Isabella (who hasn't been painted yet). I'm expecting some Spirit Hosts in the mail soon.

I'm hoping to pick up some Skinwolves at some point soon to use as Crypt Horror proxies, and I might convert some Fenrisian Wolves to use as proxies for extra dire wolves. I also want to get more recast skeleton horses so I can make 10 hexwraiths using all the leftover bits from my Black Knights. I want to pick up a wight king and some carn wraiths, Mannfried on his horse and some other small HQ units, because the hero models are cool and they aren't that big of a time commitment to paint, and with the chinaman discount they're nice and cheap.

I'm helping my brother with his Chaos Daemons army using Army Painter sprays and dip. I also painted a Space Hulk set that way and it turned out really good. Done a bunch of RPG miniatures over the years, too.

I had never heard of there even being arguments about this before the last thread got taken up with all this. The evidence for squires ranges from sparse at best, to contradictory to other lore at worst. I don't know if you're that same anon, but someone made it clear earlier that they were trying to shut up anyone that thought squires in Bretonnian lore weren't a thing. And now you're trying to make it sound like the opposition to your argument is just a meme - that's not a good way to treat a debate of any sort, that's attacking the people arguing with you rather than their points.

And please, we know GW doesn't care as much about WFB anymore, that's why they're licensing out the IP for games and RPGs. And CA cares most about making a fun game - the lore is only a justification for the units they'll include. They'll stick to whatever lore helps them make the game work well and feel fun and drop or ignore what won't - that's why there are Men-at-Arms units with swords instead of just polearms and shields, and why there aren't any Empire bowmen, or why Kremmler and the Strigoi are working for the von Carsteins, or how Bretonnia isn't already united and the Fay Enchantress could fight Leoun Leoncour, or how the Empire could even get defeated by the Empire Secessionists.

I just graduated from PDF and joined the physical rulebook club. Holding this huge-ass book in my hands got me thinking though-- with these books currently being out of print, I really should take some precautions to keep it protected, especially if I'm traveling with it, but I wasn't sure what would be a good option to put it inside of.

Then I had an unlikely stroke of inspiration. In church a lot of people would carry their bibles in protective zipper cases, so I did some searching and I happened to find an XXL one that should fit the Warhammer rulebook. It says 11x8.5x2" bibles will fit, and the WH rulebook is just about exactly that size.

https://www.christianbook.com/pastors-bible-cover-black-xxl/pd/9076XXL

There are actually some iron-on Human Empire patches on Amazon, too. I could slap one of those on to make it look a bit more legit and I think I'd be all set. In all it's not a dirt-cheap solution but it's not exactly expensive, either.
>>

Got my copy used years ago so it was already beat up, but my 7e hardy is still newish. Maybe I'll do that for it.
>>
>>52824299
The copy I just got is also used, although it's in pretty good shape. The one place it suffers is that the ribbon was pretty frayed away at the end. I had to cut it down and re-seal it with a lighter. It's still usable but it doesn't extend past the bottom of the cover like it would have if it were new.

It's apparently not hard to put in a new ribbon but I'm not sure if I'm going to bother, at least not yet.
>>
>>52824430
Also, I should mention I just ordered that bible zip case. I'll be sure to post my review when it arrives. If it fits other rulebooks I could be getting a fair bit of use out of it for other games too.
>>
>>52824281

So yeah, there working alongside GW at least in a few things.
>>
>>52824281
we know plenty. that gw is a retarded asshole with its license even over shit it obviously doesnt care about like warhammer

we do know from interviews that ca has to contact gw for lore and until questions and oks and we also know that one reason naval combat is gimped in total warhammer is because of a license problem. youre honesty living in your own world mate. never go full headcanon

>"...the fact someone else got the license does not mean they are excluded from doing the same, right? Unfortunately, the team from Horsham is not going to work on that system. There is too few ship variants and not a lot of room left for creative liberties. I sadly said it'd be marvelous to see a Black Arc of Naggaroth. In response, I heard nobody said I won't... they hinted it might be landed in the background of a battle map."
>>
>>52823362
There's a lot of holes that can be poked in the lore for Squires, that's all there is to it. On the tabletop, they were last mentioned in 5th edition, and it can be reasonably argued that they were succeeded by Yeomen in later editions, the two having overlapping rules and bits of lore. In the RPG books, there are two fluff pieces that contradict each other in supporting or not supporting squires, and it can be argued that their inclusion in the career progression at all is to make it work for the RPG rather than being based in lore, or to represent that Empire characters could become Knights Errant through pretense. And in the Total War game, the Squires are barely fluffed out, are not really like the 5th edition concept of squires at all (they are literally dismounted Questing Knight models), and were arguably included just to give Bretonnia a strong infantry unit - they could have called dismounted Questing Knights or implied they were wealthy peasants that could afford private training with about the same result, without including the squire concept.

And the fact that you like them doesn't make them any more legitimate than the half-canon, inconsistent point they're at, with flaws and holes in every scrap of lore than can be found for their support. If it weren't for Foot Squires you'd barely have any real ground to stand on, and even that doesn't give you any sway to call the traditional no-squire viewpoint a meme.

The question at this point is if you're going to keep arguing about this and trying to shout down anyone that doesn't agree with your interpretation, or if you're going to let the thread talk about other shit. Winning an argument on a Nepalese finger-painting studio isn't worth it to either of us, so I'm stopping and not dragging things out past this post. Nothing more I need to say.
>>
Arguing continuity in Warhammer is pointless, pre-6e lore always says its just a suggestion, and writers have constamtly said over the years that nothing is concrete and everything is just a biased interpretation.

Any 9e lads want to tell me if there's any point to taking Night Goblins?

As far as I can tell you only get the ability to buy Fanatics and Netters. Fanatics don't seem very good in T9A and Netters is just a 33% chance of a one point Strength debuff. Plus they gain Initiative and lose Leadership, which seems like a far worse deal.

Malekith not having any children at all makes perfect sense, with that there's no heir to Naggaroth and the Dreadlords would fight for supremacy among themself should Malekith die, there's no need for some stupid ass insane concept like all druchii being related to Malekith.

The thing about GW's zombies is that even though they're a bit dated looking and they're not quite to scale with some of the newer models, they do offer quite a bit of customization like how to pose them and what weapons to give them and they are quite a bit of fun to paint. Mantic's zombies look good and are closer to true scale, but have less customization options. It's a tradeoff so it depends on what kind of model is more appealing to you.

Of course, Mantic is also cheaper, so I think for a lot of people that would give them the win by default.

first of all, I didn't say THE best models ever made, but one of the best.
And secondly, yeah I think they are better. They're beautiful. And they are just rank and file dudes.

The Free Company was very useful for Mordheim or even to convert zombie pirates from and what not. Very versatile, but not as pretty as those skellies.

If you want my opinion on the best GW model I'd have to go with this guy.

Doesn't help that GW's professional painters tend to over-paint flat surfaces because they "look boring," even if it doesn't make any sense for there to be a visible texture. Their model people seem to think that the busier the model the better, hence this laughable monstrosity that was roundly mocked a few years ago. And yet I'm sure enough kiddies demanded it for Christmas that GW considers it a success.
>>
>>52831212

I don't think too much detail was this models problem.

It was more that it looked like a Fisher-Price toy.
>>
>>52831224
It's a fisher price toy that they covered with skulls and chains in a vain attempt to hide what an awful design it was. No matter what you do to that thing it still looks retarded. That is a turd that will never shine no matter how hard you polish it.

How does taxation work in the Empire?

I know in Medieval times it worked like pic related, where the local lord would come to town and demand riches until satiated. But the Empire is more Renaissance than Medieval, and I'm not sure that was the case then. Has anything been published about Imperial taxation?
>>
>>52831246
That's a good question. I think that property tax and sales tax were generally the most reliable forms of taxation from the rennaisance onward, since it was a lot harder to keep records of peoples' income. Merchants paid tax the items they sold, which they would usually pass on to the consumer in their prices, and land owners paid taxes for how much land they owned. I imagine these would be forms of taxation that would work out well with the Empire since they are about renaissance era.

During the time of the romans, the tax collectors were essentially raiders who had license to rob and loot whenever the government needed money, and they were allowed to keep the difference of whatever they were obligated to collect. Essentially, if a tax collector was ordered to collect $10,000, they could seize $100,000 in assets and pocket the remaining $90,000. It was a system that actively encouraged abuse of power for personal gain, and the empire didn't care as long as the money kept rolling in. This is why tax collectors were viewed as absolute scum even lower than thieves, prostitutes, slaves and gladiators by the average person in those days. Probably because unlike the above mentioned classes, tax collectors were the only ones who carried a government badge.

Before Nagash ate him, they were ushered to the gates of dusk by Usheran/Morr (if you're a filthy Imperial) and their souls could be beckoned back into new bodies made from the sand of Nehekara by a Liche Priest making offerings to the God.

It's really bad for this to happen multiple times to a soul because the wind of death (as well as the soul of Nagash) slowly whittles eats at their essence each time until they can no longer return.

Another great thing about GW's zombies is that you can mix and match them with other infatry types to get a really varied looking batch of zombies. You can obviously just buy the zombie kit and assemble it just fine, but if you buy a zombie kit and say, an Empire Swordsmen kit, you can combine them and make it look like a bunch of fallen Imperial swordsmen have been resurrected as zombies while doubling the potential configurations of zombie poses and varieties. That is probably the greatest strength of the kit versus mantic's zombies.
>>
>>52831680
Duncan is fine and in general GW's painters do a really good job. It's just that sometimes with certain models, I've seen them get carried away and the end results look overly busy for no good reason. Like, even if I could paint well enough to make all of a character's flat surfaces look like tie-dye or marble, why would I want to? If I was a soldier painting my shield I'd probably stick to one or two flat colors and use a simple design like a stripe or two, if I could be assed to paint it more than one color, and it's not like metal needs to look like some exotic mineral or something. All that faux-iridescence and shit is just a means of over complicating something to the point of looking worse just to show off one's painting technique.
>>
>>52831652
It's kind of refreshing seeing how close that is to history. Not necessarily on the 'new taxes getting devised' part, but in how the nobles keep on dodging around taxes and getting exemptions for some, most, or all of them - leaving the lowest rung with the crushing burden that needs to be wrung out of them, since you can't possibly annul those privileges of the elite - which of course eventually causes problems if the taxpayers cannot pay, or the people that you are taxing from find ways to wriggle out of their social class themselves. From Rome to pre-Revolution France, nothing changes.
>>
>>52828287

Ok here is a rundowm:

Eternal Guard = awesome. They're CORE STUBBORN INFANTRY which makes them hilariously resilient. You don't care if they die, you care that the opponent will stumble upon them. They're perfect for tarpitting chariots and monsters (anything that cannot cause 10 wounds per round will have an hard time vs them)

Wildwood rangers are meh, unless you're against ogres, demons or undead. Then they're golden. Blocks of 18 for extra hurt should you be in a forest. Be careful as skavenslaves can kill these guys on the long run.

Lord choices: this depends a lot on your list, but here are the most common setup

>Wizard with acorn of loren: hilarious, can fuck over an opponent very easily. Put it on a horse inside the Sisters or in a block of archers.

If your opponent has not a solid shooting phase, you can use it on an eagle with lore of death, and troll the living shit out of your opponent.

>Combat Lord: meh. About as hard as putty, and not particularly stabby either. You're going to need a ward save, and silvered steel armor here.

>Treeman Ancient: he's a walking beacon of terror. Level 2 to 4 of lore of life, with r6 he can tank ballista's shots, and heal the occasional wound or two. 18 inches discipline 10 bubble, and he can fuck up small units. Skip it against dwarves, skaven. empire and demons of chaos.

Now for the heroes:

>Capitain: actually decent, not terribly expensive and can put a lot of hurt into somebody. Can be BSB

>Waywatcher: awesome. At least 2 in every game over 2000 points. Snipe mages, units champions etc. Don't pick against things like ogres or chaos warriors.

>Shadowdancer: quite good, but we don't reallyyhave an unit in which they can give their best. They're resilient, reasonably stabby and they can make you win combat rather easily. They're at their best in dryads

>Branchwraith: solid but unimpressive. Rumors were that she could be a BSB for forest spirit-exclusive lists, but it didn't came to be

>>
>>52820692

Yea, games with grand armies tend to be warmachine-galore
>>
>>52831770

>Standard mage: useful, versatile, good scroll caddy, good stationary caster, see them, love them. Having your hero level mage casting as a 3rd level hurts a lot in the dispel game, as your opponent cannot afford the luxury of trying to dispel with 1 dice less than yours.
>>
>>52831777
You gotta start networking. Start by checking out the local game and comic shops and asking around if fantasy battle players congregate there. Even if they don't play at the shop they probably come in when they need paint or a new model, and the proprietor might be able to set you up. You can also try message boards and even facebook to find a local scene. Game clubs are all over the place, you just need to search.

There's a nub on the model where the sword attaches. If you glue it in you can touch the handle to belt, and since the handle is wrapped with strings/sinews/whatever I figures that is how the sword attaches to the belt.
In this particular instance the guy who built the model just rotated the sword downwards on the nub so it looks a little awkward.

The material in The Enemy Within is very historically inspired. Particularly with regards to the political system, the taxes and tolls etc.
Later authors who weren't actually trained historians fucked it up a little. For example, under the original system the city-states (Altdorf, Middenheim, Talabheim, Nuln etc) were independent from their province and had their own vote on the electoral council. Boris Todbringer was the Elector Count of Middenheim but NOT Middenland who was a closely-related von Bildhofen.
Unfortunately they oversimplified that a little and now all the city-states are theoretically independent but have the same ruler as their provinces so it doesn't actually matter.

I'm wanting to primarily run a Bretonnia-centered game with the PCs being knights errant or commonborn members of a knightly retinue. Never actually run WFRP 2e before but it's one of those games I fell in love with the instant I read it, and I've always wanted to. Anyone with experience in the system would be greatly appreciated.

The tone of the campaign can be discussed as a group. I definitely don't want it to devolve into an extended Monty Python's the Holy Grail reference but I also don't want grimdark nofunallowed.

there's like 4 or 5 people arguing about the Squire issue, and it initally started out as a polite disagreement.

THe conclusion is that you can run it however you prefer since there's no official stance on it, and in the end every Edition is canon to itself.
>>
>>52837323
I just wish things were less confused. If it was 'squires are old lore, but not-squires are new lore,' that would make more sense - people ignore newer lore all the time, and both sides could easily agree to disagree. But it seems like even when you look at the same book, for every two pieces of lore that say no squires, there's one that implies there are squires.

All this could easily have been solved with a fluff piece about some knights taking on squires, and some not. Could have made for interesting regional differences. But instead it's something that's up to interpretation and argument, and neither side can really be quite correct or wrong - there are both squires, and not squires. Schrodinger's Squire.

I'll stop fucking bringing it up now, this needs to stop.

It depends on what you take a squire to mean. In this context, I believe taking a squire to help essentially just refers to a form of martially-minded squire. I think the rest is pretty clear in intent; Brettonnian Squires wouldn't make much sense, since every nobleman is expected/required to be a knight, at least nominally.

The only way a brettonnian squire in the traditional sense could really be is if it's a nobleman before the age of which heshould begin his errantry, and that is irrelevant from the point of view of player characters, and it can't be the norm either, since most brettonnian nobles receive martial as well as traditional education. Being a squire would only apply to the truly dedicated houses or children.

Make sense?

That does kind of make sense, even if I wish there was a bit more lore to back that up. Sounds like something that could happen in Carcassone, since they take the martial skills of their sons so seriously anyway. I don't think the lore actually goes into a noble son's education anyway, so it's a bit of a missed opportunity.

But basically there could be/are Bretonnian squires, they're just retainers with military training, rather than noble sons training to be knights? Could be Yeomen, could be specific peasants trained for the job, might even be a knight in service to another? Might as well not be called squires because of how it causes confusion for those used to page>squire>knight, more like retainers or servants?

It has divisions among itself just as severe as the Empire. thoug an East-West division in a question like Squires seems more likely.

The Western Duchies are more Maritime and have more contact with Estalia and Marienburg while the eastern Duchies have more contact with Reikland and the Elves.

I vote for this, doesn't have to be north/south but squires are regionalised or even on an individual basis, they can be all interpretations.

To be honest I don't know why people assume so much uniformity, the laws of a state or kingdom in the medieval period were nothing like today.
>>
>>52838398
Probably because Bretonnia seems so uniform at a glance - they don't have a religious split since the Lady of the Lake is so widely venerated, they've stayed united for most of their history, and overall the lore hasn't really focused much on differences as how they're all similar. The main differences are on a town or duchy level, and those are stressed as being fairly individual.

That is my thinking, yes. Obviously, I can see some nobles serving as squires before they come of age, but it is not a requirement. Whereas in the Empire, very few people become actual knights without having been squires.
>>

With it being feudal though, the law pretty much differs with each Lord I suppose.

Fourteen different types of Samurai, including samurai ninjas, oni samurai, and various folklore spirits. I imagine that any magic they use would actually be spirit-based and maybe even necromantic.

That's just me spitballing, though, there's very little on Nippon, as far as I'm aware. But it's how I'd do it.

What about a restricted chaos cult that is kept on a tight leash, with principles inspired by the Samurai Code?

Not so much "good chaos" as something more akin to the Istvaanians and Xanthians of the Inquisition in 40k, trying to turn the weapons and forces of "evil" against it. And inevitably failing, forcing one to commit sudoku.
>>
>>52831749

>more chaos
yeah, nah.
>>
>>52840395

Well we would have:

Army special rules:

>katanas, always armor piercing, something something folded 100 times
>+1 LD to the general's unit. All units lose 1 Ld after general death

Lords:

>Shogun. Extremely stabby, can be on foot, horse or dragon. Makes units he joins immune to psychology
>Wuxia: generic mage lord with access to all lores
>Monk: mage/warrior hybrid (up to 3rd only), comes with powerful ward save, access to lore of Heaven, Fire, Life and Light

Heroes:
>Ronin, like fireslayer. Samurai units he joins have frenzy since they're looking for honourabru deatho
>Lil mage
>Lil shogun, can be bsb
>Lil monk (up to 1° lvl mage)
>Ninja hero. Assassin character, can be lvl1 mage for lore of shadows

Core:

>basic infantry, samurai-like.
>skirmishing ninja's, akin to the skaven ones
>peasant bowmen
>maybe one light cavalry unit

Special units:

>proper ninja. Poisoned attacks, ambusher, skirmisher, maybe sniper as a buyable upgrade.
>elite samurai, prob stubborn, heavily armored
>cavalry ranged unit
>cavalry melee unit
>monks, immune to psychology, ward save instead of armor save
>Monstrous infantry based on japanese folklore. Maybe kappa, or kitsune

Rare choices:

>Oni (as monstrous infantry or monster with handlers), following Demon's rule
>Yuki Onna. Etheral Spirit (infantry), gives ASL to units in close combat, and stupidity to enemies 6''. Can fly
>Dragon (rideable, maybe even hero-exclusive)
>some kind of war machine, average in power
>kamikaze unit

Lots of Japanese historical models available that are about the right scale and style for Warhammer, and they're cheaper than GW models.
>>
>>52840696
Actually, fair point, I guess. Still, you won't be able to completely avoid chaos. I think it's better to have it in something of a new facet, you don't even need to refer to it as chaos, and the Nipponese may not even consider it in the same way as the Old World does.

Either way, I'd say that "Chaos" shouldn't be the main focus which Nippon would combat - conflicts with the Sea Elves/High Elves and other regional forces would be a lot more interesting.

>>52840510

Fuck no.

>Ronin
>like fireslayer
ALL kinds of fuck no.

>basic infantry, samurai-like.
Eh, maybe, but it would probably feel a bit odd. I really think that basic infantry really should be basic infantry. Regular mooks with pikes, but I think it would fit the warhammer aesthetic if they attempt to emulate the higher-born and near-mystical samurai by wearing poor imitations and hodge-podge armour pieces reminiscent of samurai armour.

>Dragon (rideable, maybe even hero-exclusive)

I would make the eastern dragons distinct from the other dragons, and mystical in nature, rather than something that can be tamed and ridden. Something that shows up and awes, and even when it "dies" it essentially just flees elsewhere.

The only one that could possibly ride a dragon would probably be the Emperor, as he represents the connection between the spirit-world and the material world, and maintains the compact between man and the spiritual essence of the world.

Imperial scholar thought of the day; Is all of Nippon a cult of Tzeentch?

>kamikaze unit
Well, obviously.

My idea: A dual system of the peasantry and the religion being ruled by the Emperor and the Monasteries/Monks, while the Military is ruled by the Shogun and divided into Districts, each district being devoted to the local spirits/deities, and every Samurai striving to become a Sword Saint(Similar to Grail Knights in Bretonnia, but every swordsaint is blessed by his respective spirit/deity) through devotion and perfecting his knowledge of the martial arts. Internal Conflicts between Military Districts are usually settled through duels between Sword Saints or small bands of Samurai facing each other, while in case of external threats the Peasant Levies and Monks are mobilized to face any possible threats of invasion.
There are also the Organisations operating off the records, so neither under Samurai or Imperial/Faith control, one being the Ninja Clans, powerful families and conclaves operating from the shadows and staying hidden, though helping to defend Nippon when the need arises. And second the Wokou, a term used to basically describe the criminal underbelly of Nippon society, a wide assortion of Pirates, Bandits, thieves and murderers who follow only their own laws, yet when there is a threat of invasion on their homeland, even the Wokou are known to form into pirate fleets and Bandit Warbands to assist in the defence of Nippon.

The Gods of Nippon are most closely related to the Celestial Dragons of Cathay, who are also to some degree worshipped in Nippon. Empire Scholars suggest their belief is related to Chaos, while High Elf Traders report of the Nippon religion being more of an conglomeration of Nature Spirits, Celestial Beings, (somewhat)universal Human Deities and traces of Old Ones worship.
The Emperor is the direct descendant of the founder, who is also regarded as the "Pact Maker", who is said to have convinced all the Spirits of the Land to protect his people, because of this the Emperors are seen as almost godlike themself.

From what I read it was just a cult that gained a lot of influence but dissapeared after.
I'm pretty sure they are normal (although with elven level of magic) "good" aligned human kingdom considering they also fight beastmen and Tamurkhan invaded them

>Sounds a bit too close to Cathay, don't they have a Tzeentch cult near the Dragon Emperor?

Absolutely no clue, honestly. Never heard of it, but there's very little on Cathay. I wasn't necessarily thinking these would be close to the Nipponese Emperor or the Shogun(s), though. But if there genuinely is a tzeentchite cult near the Dragon Emperor of Cathay, it could be fun to inspire the Oni more by aspects of Khorne.

That said, I would prefer to keep it a far cry from straight-out stating the name of any major Chaos God. Not just because it's fucking boring, but also because there's really no need, and these things should be things that comes naturally or that the people can actually argue constitutes cultural or moral "goods" or laudable spiritual sacrifices.

So if it helps someone sleep at night, let's call it an Oni Spirit Cult instead of an Oni Daemon Cult. Tons of mysticism, questionable rituals to imbue the katanas, scarification/tattoos, etc. But leave just enough ambiguity to allow people to question whether they're "actually mutated" into adopting "deamonic" features, if they've actually been "possessed" by daemons, or if they're really just mystic magic-using arcane warriors that have donned intimidating masks and fostered rumors and myths surrounding them.

I got my Spirit Hosts in the mail today. I got them from Games Workshop instead of China this time because I knew half those wisps would be missing or broken on arrival, and I didn't want to deal with the headache of trying to fix them. They're not too badly priced compared to other GW models, at least. I think I'm going to go to the comic shop and pick up some green wash though, because that will make these things a lot easier to paint.

>Would it be fair to make Nippon not so good?

Define "fair"? Preferably, it shouldn't be "good" or "evil" at all. The exact nature of how the Skaven learned what they did has never ever been expanded upon, either. They could've learned much of it in direct conflict with Nippon.

But I'd definitely not make Nippon goodie-goodies; it's Japan, and Japan means Oni and spirits both capricious and benevolent, and always venerable, and where there's spirits, there's the realms of chaos.

It just seems like most the human areas that haven't been expanded on are considered more or less good. I don't know how someone who likes Nippon would feel if someone else made their favorite faction less than good - somewhat of a mix of past good and evil like Araby, or Wood Elf tier in their neutrality, or even evil, having been tainted by Dark Elf raids in the past.
>>
>>52842045
Once you put together all the stuff about Cathay, they start looking a little evil too.
Not just the Tzeentchian cults but the fact that they trade openly with the Skaven and the Monkey King even had a Skaven adviser in his court.
