There are a couple of ways to go about survival. An obvious strategy would be to turn my enemies against one another, the rats surely resent past experiments on their brethren and the doctors will be eager to study new sapience. Meanwhile I seek to befriend the spiders, reliable pest predators can be payment for the orchard and if worst comes to worst I can feed them fruit to uplift them as foes to the rats (better the devil you know). We might be able to out-science the doctors in some areas, especially in analysing the orchard's fruit (which I presume they cannot access). In the best case scenario I will have time to transfer the mathematician to a more comfortable medium, perhaps even into the web language itself so that she lives as long as the spider species does.

That's true, but the Black King's power also has a lot of additional applications that I think are quite useful. I'm not staggeringly fond of mindrape, but it lets me affect the world very dramatically, which will make it easier to complete big tasks and get powers from White Pawn.

Black Pawn is probably better at just keeping me alive, but Black King combined with White Pawn is imo the best compromise between pure power and survivability.

You could do something of a hybrid, i.e. have a list of predetermined characters, with an optional section where you can adjust them (e.g. if one character has one particular feature you dislike, but is otherwise perfect, you could still choose them and then just do away with the offending feature).
Then there's also the amount of changes to consider - i.e. do you just let the reader make up to X changes, or should the amount of changes allowed be tied to the person's character (such as submissive tendencies, general lenience, outright apathy towards any changes to their form, etc.)?

The equipment is going to be pretty broad. Categories like "light weapons" and "Armour" rather than "Colt 1911" and "Bulletproof vest".

Higher levels of equipment are going to have very powerful magical enhancements. Like the ability to channel magic into a gun to make it shoot... harder? Or basically EX- CALLLIBUR! for swords. Maybe a form of magic shield for armour.

I might reword Dei Bellator a bit to expand the protection that it provides. Deus Vult is probably a better name than ordinary.

James Sancroix was born on Star Dust Station to a soldier of the Federation and a poor merchant, though after his birth his mother left his father, ostensibly for a long-term mission for the Federation. His father struggled to raise James, them only barely escaping poverty through huge personal sacrifices. Luckily, this was enough for James to learn enough of the merchant business to get into Stardust's most prestigious institution. There, he learned all he could of trade and industry, while also forging a close personal friendship with a member of the Blackhawk Elite. He went on to reach middling success after his graduation, but it wasn't until his friend in Blackhawk notified him of a ship about to be decomissioned that he saw an oppurtunity that was never before taken. An attempt to create a Carrier with multiple Spinal Mounts resulted in a much weaker than normal hull to the point the Blackhawks doubted it could survive long enough to release all of its fighters/drones. Before they destroyed it, James managed to talk his way into purchasing it (discounted and completely stripped of all software that might have belonged to Blackhawk) and brought it back to Stardust for modifications. It took two years for him to manage to link up an Anti-Matter Cannon to it, as well as jury-rig an AI to work on it (AIs refused to recognize the spinal mounted cannon, due to the status of 'carrier' being hardcoded into it). It took him six months to round up the money for the vast amount of mining lasers and drones he needed. This buyout caught the attention of the Federation, but they barely monitored him due to not seeing how Mining Lasers could pose a threat to anyone.

Finally done with the prep work, James took it to the closest uninhabitable system and set his sights on a barren rock world. Over his crews protests, he ordered them to fire the cannon at the planet, the harsh beam of Antimatter energy lashing out against it and carving ugly scars into its face. Over and over he carved into the planet, until he finally reached the core. As the Antimatter energy touched the delicate core, it resulted in an incredibly explosion, utterly shattering the planet and throwing pieces of it throughout the system. Now the real work could begin. He sent out all 66 Drones, each equipped with two fully upgraded mining lasers, out to gather all the material they could, while his Carrier also set to work on all of the rocks around it with its own complement of fully upgraded mining lasers. After a few hours of work, his massive cargo spaces were full of ore of varying quality, and he set back off to Stardust Station.

Shortly after arriving, almost all of his cargo was sold and James went from a middle-of-the-road merchant to a billionaire almost instantly. His insane plan had paid off, and quite well at that. Using his newfound funds, he purchased a few modifications such as an Ore Processing Center (processed ore was both more valuable and took up less space), as well as over two thousand dedicated workers. Of course, many people learned of his success and coveted the Worldbreaker, so he also hired a huge Federation battlegroup for protection. He went back to the same system, collected all he could from the remnants of the first planet, and proceeded to destroy yet another to harvest. He had single-handedly created the planet-busting industry.

Years later, James still is the sole planetbuster, who routinely brings massive shipments of ore to Stardust. These events are so massive that half the Station closes down whenever he returns, all citizens eager to get some of the massive amounts of cargo. Due to his willingness to trade with anyone, he's usually left alone by the Pirate gangs, though he's not so foolish as to not hire a Blackhawk or Talon escort (He used to hire more trustworthy members of the Luos Syndicate as well, being some of his biggest patrons, but many were wiped out). His crew is 2/3rds workers to sort and process the ore, while the remaining 1/3rd are volunteers lured by the stories of prominent bonuses for good hauls. Of course, not all is well for James. His jury-rigged Targray AI has been acting up lately, while he is also being harassed by a large group of rogue drones. For what reason, he cannot say, but his best guess suggests they want all the resources he has or they object to the practice. Speaking of objecting, he's also hunted by a abnormal cult who consider planetbusting while humans have terraforming tech to be immoral. He's also earned the ire of the Red Daggers after refusing to sale to them (citing too much attempted banditry), who are currently trying to create their own rival planetbuster ship as well as placing a general bounty out on his head.

The worst is yet to come, however. He'll soon 'bust' a planet that had Herald tech buried beneath its surface that reacts negatively to the planet it is on being destroyed. The end result being the Worldbreaker being thrown through space, leaving them stranded without their escort... As well as low on food.
