Pathfinder General /pfg/

DRAGONS edition

Have you ever slain a dragon? Has a dragon ever been a great antagonist? Or have you ever made allies with one? What about their lairs? Have you ever plundered one for gold?

Heck just tell me about all things dragon!

How come armor-based martials are so much worse than light-armor martials? Like, you trade so much just for some extra AC, and then like 3 levels later it doesn't matter anymore because AC flies out the window anyways in favor of miss chances and shit. Except you stay fat and lumbering, while the asshole with 4 less AC than you has now become almost as hard to hit, except he's been running about at full speed the entire time, taking no penalties to his skill checks the entire time. Actually, in a party, that fucker probably becomes harder to hit than you as soon as you hit that point where AC says goodbye, since "speedy man" gets first dibs on the item that grants miss chance.
How the fuck is it okay for a dude in full plate + tower shield to be at like -19 armor check penalty when all you get is AC anything dangerous will just chew through anyway?
I'm so upset about this, god damn. I just wanted to play a big hulk of metal but it's like shooting yourself in the fucking foot.

I made an elf Toxophilite ranger dude.
First time playing PF.
Group consists of 3 PF newbies and 2 veterans.
The GM is also running a character and plans on switching with the veteran players for oneshots later in the campaign.

Epic starting points and a GM known for generosity and simplifying some rules in the players favor, for example cover.

Did I gimp myself by going for a weird archetype/non human?

I don't know how important wild empathy/endurance is but I don't think that quarry is that that great so the Toxo looks okay.

I wanted to be able to shoot through ropes 'n shit.

Are the elf-only bow feats any good?

I know that I should just relax and enjoy the game.

But I want to outdamage the two handed weapon fighter whose player always powergames.

Read some ranger guides from the pastebin, I like the mounted archer idea.

GM suggested toughness for all characters as first feat because it's newbie friendly survivability. Everybody took it except me.

I took point blank shot.

I mean, if you stick with the rapid shot/manyshot/deadly aim build until you hit 11th(?) and get Instant Enemy, you'll do plenty of damage compared to the 2h fighter. He just gets to do it for longer, because he isn't relying as directly on casting.

I've been wanting to incorporate dragons for a while into the games I run, but they haven't lasted long enough in the past for me to do so.

Back when I played 3.5, my GM had us traveling through the desert for quite a while, so we encountered Young Adult Blue Dragons on two separate occasions... and on two separate occasions, we killed them and my Elf Spellsword harvested their parts to sell at the trading outposts.

It got him a shiny new Mithril Shirt with an Endure Elements enchantment, so I was very pleased.

Oh man, yeah, 1st level is pretty much podium-time for a human fighter from feat advantage alone.

However, he's still relegated to what he can hit, and if he misses for any reason he's basically a sitting duck. You should be able to snag Rapid Shot by 3rd level at the latest, and you'll be putting more fire downrange than him per turn until the end of the campaign (at least in terms of number of attacks).

Something else you're gonna want is Clustered Shots, especially if your GM is gonna have DR enemies anywhere near you. Make sure your animal companion is tripping/disarming/whatever it's good for as often as possible, assuming you still have it.

Mounted archery is fine but if you ever go indoors you automatically lose the advantage except in very rare circumstances.

Elf is fine. The difference between most the PC races is mostly fluff pieces, with the key thing that actually matters being the ability score adjustments, and even that's not a huge effect (compare having a +2 to all the bonuses you get from leveling up, and having a +6 item by level 20).

Wild empathy is actually really useful at low level, but ranger has enough stuff in general that losing it really isn't going to hurt you.

Toxophilite's abilities aren't really that great - generally you're much better off using all your attacks to, well, attack (and thereby kill enemies quicker) rather than use them to cancel other attacks - but they also aren't an actual drain on you.

>But I want to outdamage the two handed weapon fighter whose player always powergames.

Well, your main problem here will be that you have to split your stats between Dex (to hit and AC) and Str (to do damage). The way to compensate for this is to pick up Rapid Shot, Manyshot, and anything else that lets you make as many attacks as possible ASAP.

Make sure to take the Deadly Aim feat, and always use it against low AC enemies or once you have stat bonuses / an enhanced bow. It's the ranged equivalent of Power Attack.

>I wanted to be able to shoot through ropes 'n shit.

One thing to keep in mind is that while attacks against objects, etc are okay once you have the right gear, ranged combat maneuvers kind of suck (like from the Ranged Disarm feat), because combat maneuvers in general kind of suck. The only really good combat maneuver is Dirty Trick, which was added in Advanced Player's Guide rather than the core book.

>GM suggested toughness for all characters as first feat because it's newbie friendly survivability. Everybody took it except me.

Good. Toughness sucks. You can get equal results in the mid game just by getting an item of +2 Constitution.

>Oh yeah, also no third party shenanigans, just all Paizo products available on the german market as far as I know.

If the opportunity comes in the future, the books Path of War and Path of War Expanded (no idea if they have a German translation) make combat archery more interesting. They have classes that give "maneuvers", basically like mini-spells focused around combat that you can recycle several times per combat (based on your class), and there are schools of maneuvers focused around ranged attacks, one for elemental effects and the other for trick shots and getting ranged combat maneuvers for free along with your attacks.

They also do most of this stuff as standard actions rather than full actions, so your character isn't just standing in place like a turret most of the time.

>Is the arcane archer any good?

Sadly, not really. Generally, the really good spells to use with Imbue Arrow already have a medium/long range anyway, and most of the other abilities can be replicated with the right gear.

Making a Magus with the Eldritch Archer archetype works much better mechanically, and is also way easier to plan out and build.

>Does multiclassing a little bit work for a ranger focusing on ranged combat?

Depends on what you're multiclassing with.

Stabbing Shot isn't really worth it. Build towards taking Point Blank Master instead, so you can just use ranged attacks in melee without a problem.

>But I'm not worried since I guess he'll be doing single target pew pew and I'll be doing multitarget rat-tat-tat.

Well, and keep in mind the other big difference here: You have spells! You can buff yourself, you can heal allies and cure ability damage, and all that other stuff. You don't have a lot of spells, but you can swap them all out every day to deal with whatever specific challenges are at hand.

Even without PoW fighters are the best shooties because weapon training and bonus feats to make the feat taxes a lot less painful. If you want to shoot stuff just make a human fighter for 3 feats at level 1 to cover Point Blank and Precise Shot.

If you use firearms take trench fighter so you can get dex to damage.

Do I understand bardic knowledge correctly?

Bardic Knowledge = + 1/2 * (Bard Level) on all knowledge checks
Bard 1: +1
Bard 2: +1
Bard 3: +1 (?)
Bard 4: +2
Bard 5: +2 (?)
Bard 6: +3

I know that generally if something benefits the player, you round down, with the exception of when it would round down to 0.

New-ish pathfinder player here; about to begin Mummy's Mask.

The Player's Guide PDF was really helpful with what it provided, but one thing it didn't really do unlike some other ones I've seen is give example builds of characters that fit the setting (it mentions classes & archetypes by name, but that's about it).

So tell me, anyone who's played/DM'd it:
>What are some builds that you found fun and also successfully contributed to getting the party through the campaign?

This time tomorrow we'll have our roles decided amongst ourselves, but in the meantime, I want to prepare a potential build for each role (though I personally have no desire to play a "tank").

So far the only tips I've heard are, "Don't neglect ranged damage," and, "Don't neglect arcane/divine." Being relatively new, I'm not even positive I understand that last bit, aside from bringing those kinds of spells.

As usual, any suggestions are welcome.

I still don't really understand this mentality. It's obvious from the outset that the overall standard of quality from /pfg/ characters is far better and more refined than your average roll20 character or even your standard casual couchgame D&D grognard or whatever. Why is this still such a problem for some anons? Yes, it's understandable that the pursuit of further improvement is always necessary, but why the scrutiny? It's not like we're all writers here, we're mostly here because we play games. inb4 "You don't need to be a writer to make 'competent' characters".
I don't mean to defend mediocrity or whatever you might say, I'm just a little uncomfortable with a notion that smacks of 'you must be AT LEAST THIS inspired to ride on the /pfg/ fun train.'

Engineer guy seems fluffy enough, no idea if the class is effective but if that armor is like an eidolon its probably solid.

Striker tailor could be interesting if he goes full fabulous and really hams it up: would be boring if it's just a drama note though.

Raul could go either way. Seems a tad too obsessed with his foster father to care much for a party that isn't him. Serious daddy issues.

For the female ones, the Bard could be good, the female engineer could go either way, but from what I read rather than step on eachother's toes two engineers make dangerous combos from upgrading eachother's shit.

I do agree with you that even weak /pfg/ characters are way better than most of the best characters I see off /pfg/, but speaking practically, the /pfg/ app process is a competition.

It goes back to the necessary evil of character apps that gets debated now and then. How well-written a profile is isn't the only factor in getting into a game, but it's a factor. Couple this with the horse racing culture that's developed, and it's easy to see why some people get hung up over app quality. It's not all memes and shit-posting, as much as that's a part of it. People do get genuinely disappointed if they don't like other apps to a game they've applied to, they get disappointed that there isn't more reading material for games they don't apply to, and they get disappointed over concepts they like not having the foundation to support it.

But yeah a lot of it is definitely shitposting.

First things first, did /pfg/ start pushing this ship first?
Then no, don't pursue it (yet). /pfg/ is a fucking shitshow and will push a ship just because one person starts it arbitrarily, to the exclusion of anything that makes sense. If /pfg/ is telling you to pursue a ship, consider that /pfg/ will also be clamoring for your character get cucked/raped. The thread-goers don't give a shit about your game, they just want a punchline to a bad joke.

Now that you've taken a step back, feel free to leave the ship on the table. It might be fun, and if it appeals to you, and you see it developing naturally in-game, then go for it.

But the worst possible thing you can do is try to force a ship into existence. Nobody will be happy, least of all you and your partner. It'll feel and look unnatural, it'll override what makes sense or could otherwise be better, and most of all it's going to wear thin really fast.

Ultimately, I don't think the high level of scrutiny actually amounts to much in the end. From what I've seen, GMs rarely pick players due to how well written or deep their backstory is rather, they evaluate based on their own unseen criteria.

The obsession over apps feeds /pfg/'s need to have things to talk about and, hopefully, gives Anons a chance to evaluate the weaknesses in their own writing; so that they can improve in the future.

I agree that it doesn't matter much in the end as far as which apps will be selected, but it does set a rather unpleasant atmosphere for writing apps. The problem is most of the common complaints are baseless shitposting with nothing logical or analytical to back them up- hence the abundance of /lit/ tier buzzwords and constant need for the input of anons such as yourself, who brand themselves reviewers- the title of course having a connotation of credibility and expertise.

In practice, almost none of this discussion actually gets us anywhere, or inspires anons to make meaningful changes to apps.

I haven't the nerve to dedicate a deal of time to an application that I'd feel proud of, and potentially face rejection, or bad feelings from others who may have spent equal time to be rejected. Instead, I figure it's more constructive of me to be supportive of you guys. I really do like thumbing through your guys' work, and I hope I get to continue to do so for some time.

That's kinda why I namefag, and do so across every game, rather than picking a new one for each. I don't want people to blindly trust me, I want to let them know how I think; so they can decide for themselves if I'm credible.

>In practice, almost none of this discussion actually gets us anywhere, or inspires anons to make meaningful changes to apps.

While the rest of your post has is debatable, I'd disagree with this statement.

Most of the apps I go over do significantly improve in the following days; oftentimes changing things I noticed but didn't comment on. While it's very possible the two things are unrelated, I'd like to believe people are taking the comments reviewers and using them as a jumping off point to re-evaluate their own writing. For me, if I'm trying to edit a piece, I find it difficult to pick what to begin with; however, once someone's given me a starting point, I start finding problems I never would have noticed before.
>>
>>52645954
Who the hell is Nugget Man? I keep seeing them mentioned.
>>
>>52646019
I never said 'reviewers are not good for the app process,' because that would be wrong. I mentioned the popular namefag specifically because the people who use it use it because they generally know what they're doing. except when they don't and it's fairly obvious.

The reason people hold this feedback in such high regard is because it's generally more valuable than the average comment, which is the kind of thing I'm talking about, and the reason I made the distinction between shitposts with no analysis and reviews. Am I talking in circles?
>>
>>52645962
Literally chose the characters at random
>>
>>52646071
Okay, so my point still stands. Regardless of whether he was chosen by chance or because the DM liked his app, it still wasn't actually based on the merits /pfg/ would have judged him by.
>>
Always think about party balance
Never be a duplicate
>>
>>52646094
Which is hard as fuck to do in this meta of applying as a character, and not a player.
>>
>>52645867
>>52646019
Really, all you need to do for abelpful review is to do a few tick boxes:
>Does the application have basic grammar and spelling
>Does it fit the setting
>Does the character have appropriate back story for their level
>Does the character have the rough same alignment to the rest of the party
>Does the backstory give the GM plot hooks to use
>Is the character actually interesting

Once you judge a character on that it's pretty easy for people to see what is done right or not. Unless you have a nonstandard application, in which case it usually succeeds or fails spectacularly.
>>
>>52646111
Yup
Which is why roll20 apps are crazy
First you should pick players, then roles and then characters
>>
>>52646060
>Am I talking in circles?

No, no, I was just misunderstanding your point. Sleep deprivation'll do that.

And I would agree, basically everything that goes on here in-regards to characters is shitposting.

Though, I'd hazard a guess and say that's just due to the over-saturation of games, and the community division that goes along with it. Back in November-December, when meme games were just starting up, there were some fairly decent discussions going on (amidst the shitposting). As groups have formed and people began to congregate in their own chat channels /pfg/ started experiencing a brain drain of sorts, where the people who got into games (the "best and brightest" as it were) left /pfg/ to discuss in their own cliques, making legitimate discussions fewer and farther between.

>>52646121
I mean, I guess, sure. The thing is, we've been doing this so long that people are, almost always, more than meeting those basic criteria.
>>
>>52646111
>>52646148
This shit is the exact reason I haven't applied to any of these memefests. Sure, I'd love to go on a sweet quest with you guys, and fuck yes I'm a pervert who'd love to textfuck and be textfucked, but fuck if I'm writing out a character in a void. >>52646154
The ones who go above the basic criteria are the ones that frankly don't need reviews, because they're usually well written enough to only need praise.
>>
>>52646170
>well written enough to only need praise

Nothing only needs praise.
>>
>>52646160
>fuck if I'm writing out a character in a void
You have a whole setting usually. Look to the information available in the "setting details" thread or in the LFG posting to get some info.

Pairing with other characters can be done after selection if you just ask the GM if you can tie together backstories.
>>
>>52646193
While true, for the competently written apps most criticism or suggestions to make it better will stem from reviewer bias more than correcting basic errors. It's not wrong to provide suggestions at that point, but it is a lot, a LOT more subjective.
>>
>>52646250
What's wrong with subjectivity when a review is designed to determine the quality of, as well as how enjoyable a character is? It's a concept mired in subjectivity to begin with, and the only real bouts of objectivity in the practice will be pointing out flaws in formatting, or grammar.
>>
>>52646373
Because unless you/re the Gm, you're subjective enjoyment of the app doesn't mean shit for dick.
>>
>>52646373
>What's wrong with subjectivity when a review is designed to determine the quality of, as well as how enjoyable a character is?
Praise or criticism is fine, but subjectivity is not good when actually suggesting improvements. You don't know what the GM likes, and while you can guess and suggest it, people can be influenced quite significantly by reviews especially suggestions.

Unless you can work out what the GM likes, in which case go for whatever suggestion you'd want to see.
>>
>>52646003
He's using Lunar Dial, a discipline from the Grimoire. All of TBG is busted as fuck so he will be fine.
>>
>>52645968
The Touhou Battle Grimoire stuff has quite a bit of the stuff we often see /pfg/ complain was lacking in PoW and demand from SoM.

Several disciplines for example can make it difficult to touch more than a handful of maneuvers from other disciplines: one's "school" can easily be, barring a trick or two learned here or there, one's entire initiation ability. Plus pretty much every discipline has one of those oldschool tactical feats that we all loved.

Love-Coloured Magic: Sealed Maneuvers do not need to be readied but are only available when all other maneuvers are depleted and remain expended until you recover maneuvers and bottom out again.

Ancient Temple requires and uses a specific pair of blades to do its dirty work.

Doll Judgement requires you to craft dolls ahead of time, but the maneuvers using them then use their own reach from your controlling hands. With the right feat you learn its maneuvers as prepared spells for a wizard or the like, expending spell slots.

Divine Flame can combine some high level maneuvers; expending one (oft-specific) as fuel to add a bonus to the other one, and can overcharge its stances momentarily. But it builds up heat, and going over will shut your initiating down but hard. There's feats to bypass this for a moment; that gets dangerous.

Lunar Dial requires you to have a *LOT* of throwing knives on hand, BUT many of its maneuvers have 'stopwatch' effects, where you can kill the maneuver's effect early for a different boon. Not many disciplines run on you ENDING your own stances do they?

Plain History requires you to have nothing in hand at all, and is almost entirely skill based: you can and will talk things to death, or rewrite history so they were in a different spot, doing different things.

Uh, I did change my app. Primarily because the first guy I applied with (Ezekiel) was stepping on the toes PRETTY heavily on Mercedes, and because the ridiculous build I had for him (STR TWF with a Kinetic Blade and a conductive longsword) was... untenable. I tried to revise it but it just seemed like it was a copy of Mercedes, so I scrapped it (I did leave it up if anybody wanted to use it in their games, some folks trawl through /pfg/ game apps for NPCs) and then posted Rory kinda hastily. A couple reviewanons later, a revision, and, uh, yeah. That happened

Evil's always a big risk. Chaotic Evil can practically be a red flag all on its own. You've written CE well, mind, but it's still at the very least quite a chance for a party to take in someone whose hobbies include murdering their own family.

Curse of the Lazy Throne Session 4 was last night! Session 3 got cut short due to roll20 fucking itself, and we didn't really do too much anyway, so here's a double greentext.

>After capturing Gaedren Lamm, the party hears the sounds of rioting in the streets.
>The King is dead. And everyone has lost. Their. Shit.
>Since they've decided to turn Gaedren and his evidence in to the Korvosan Guard, the party makes its way to Citadel Volshyenek using the back alleys
>The trip is largely uneventful, outside of Beatrice getting accosted by an insane doomsayer and Sofia slapping him away.
>Fortunately, the Korvosan Guard are reasonable people and we turn Gaedren into their custody. The Watch Captain on duty even knocks his old ass out, which makes all of us happy.
>However, we still have an orphan girl to take care of, and Ophelia's hesitant to leave her with the Guard. So we head to the nearest safe place we can.
>This happens to be Zellara's house.
>As we walk in, Zellara manifests from her Harrow Deck. Turns out she was dead the whole time, who knew?
>>
>>52647272
Come to think of it, I've never made a Kineticist in any fashion within Pathfinder. Are they hard to play?

>>52647295

That picture is quite the bribe. Anything beyond party favors and wet stockings?
>>
>>52647461

>Zellara apologizes for the slight deception, but since she couldn't get back at Gaedren Lamm she consulted the only people she knew who could: two former guards, a somewhat spoiled rich psychic armory, and the most optimistic orphan in the world.
>Really, she was only missing two more teenagers with attitude (Ein's an old man at 27)
>Unfortunately, it seems like Zellara can't rest just yet - her devotion to Korvosa is so strong that her deck actually has that purpose as an intelligent item.
>But, being the generally nice people we are, we take up the crusade - in exchange for being able to use her house, of course.
>And so, the party has a sleepover in a dead woman's place.
>They wake up the next morning to find that the rioting hasn't stopped yet, unfortunately... and they have to return the Queen's brooch.
>After making their morning preparations, the party leaves Alinza (the little orphan girl) behind and sets off for Castle Korvosa, once again taking the back streets.
>Ophelia is a master of survival, apparently.
>But this time, the trip isn't so uneventful! We run into a mob of rioters chasing after a nobleman!
>Due to half the party trying to scare them away and the other half attempting diplomacy, the mob is confused... But combat ensues anyway
>Beatrice pulls the nobleman away from the crowd, and Sofia knocks the leader out with a nonlethal mind blade
>Ophelia pulls out a sap and starts knocking heads in
>Ein does what he does best - summoning things. In this case it's a pair of Celestial Eagles that can apparently roll ridiculously well
>The nobleman, a bit frightened, tries to calm the crowd down... and apparently had a silver fucking tongue because he does so.
>He introduces himself as Amin Jalento, then tries to win the Beatrice Bowl by giving her his ring as a reward for helping to save his life
>Sofia, not to be outdone, makes a pass at him as well
>>
>>52647528
She's good at resurrection?

Kineticists are simple enough to play. They are hard to make good. If you have 3pp access they can be made very good, but if 1pp only, optimize the utter fuck out of them or you're in trouble.
>>
>>52647599
In regards to optimization:
You need CON. You also want DEX for ranged hits. Despite your large HP and con base you ARE a squishy, a very squishy indeed; very easily knocked out. Keep your Burn at the level you need to max out overflow, and remember you can often not do much with your blasts unless you use Gather Power. Physical blast accuracy is very low; you're a BAB 15 and while your overflow compensates somewhat, you're still hitting no better than a BAB 20 with a nonmagical weapon and no 'training' bonus. So for many targets energy blasts are the thing; but of course their damage is low. Do not assume you're a primary damage dealer; it may be better to use debuffs and debilitators so long as you can keep them free.
>>
>>52647575
>We shoot the shit with Amin for a while, turns out he's going to the castle as well. He decides to travel with us since we're infinitely better at fighting than he is.
>Castle Korvosa is an imposing structure, brimming with Korvosan Guard and a bunch of new figures that we don't recognize.
>In fact, Ein points out via collective that there's no sign of Sable Company anywhere - and that, at least until yesterday, they were always responsible for the monarchy's security
>However, after being patted down and turning in our weapons (except for Beatrice's scarf, due to a godly Sleight of Hand roll), we're let in without incident.
>Sabina, the captain of the Queen's guard, is completely no nonsense all the time. So either the worst waifu bait or the best.
>The Queen, bless her heart, is quite grateful to find out that we've found her brooch. In thanks, she gives us 1200 gold and a commendation to join the Korvosan Guard as private agents.
>Ein is enthusiastic to be basically reinstated without most of the stuffy restrictions. Ophelia has her reservations but eventually relents.
>Sabina is a bit nicer on the way out, still kind of a bitch though. She arranges for an escort back to the Citadel.
>On the way back, the party teases Sofia a bit. Ein pleads the 5th on his opinion of her, but her attempts to pryban answer out of him are stymied by the arrival of the one true waifu of this AP:
>Field Marshal Cressida Kroft.
>Cressida is excited to have some reliable people for once - especially two that she's already familiar with, and after accepting our new position as Agents of the Guard we receive our first assignment.
>Turns out there's a deserter who's been convincing Guardsmen to... well, desert. Our orders are to take him alive, if possible - and to find out what's causing him to be the city's second biggest asshole right now.
>>
>>52647599

It may be. Characters never end up being QUITE like we imagine them when writing up an app or even just creating them. It takes a session or three to really get a handle on their personality; to find what truly 'flows' with them.
