Also, I'm curious; have you ever posted a design of your own creation? I'd like to see what your aesthetics are when it comes to stuff 100% out of your own head.

Apologies for the crap scan, I'm using a phone-scanner because my printer died ages ago. This is more of a sculpt breakdown at the moment, but I'm happy with the general arm and torso architecture, and the more beetling rear torso compared to the CGL "slab with a heat sink" bullshit. Please note that this is supposed to be a Star League-era design, and I'm cribbing heavily from the BLK and Mackie. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing..

I've got nearly 2 terabytes worth of science fiction artwork, screenshots, 3D renders and film clips that I mainly browse through to "inspire" myself with shapes and details.

1. FAST. Or else industrialmechs that don't need to be any heavier to do whatever thing they're made to do.

2. Not all that much. Just as you're better off with a two ton assault BA than a two ton protomech, 10-15 ton protomechs are generally better for stuff than mechs of that weight.

Thoughts on the Gotha aerospace fighter?

Specifically the -400, -500, and -600 variants?
>>
>>52474057
http://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php?topic=2521.0 ?
>>
>>52474057

Gothas are slow. 5/8 is not the best since it limits you to going after things that are, usually, 20-40 tons heavier. They will have better armour and more guns on average. They also have just one ton of ammo for the LRMs, which means that after 4 turns you can be stuck with a quarter of the Gotha's mass as dead weight.

The -400 has fairly weak armour, so you'd better hope you get a lot of decisive thresholds from the PPC and/or LRMs.

The -500 improves on the armour a little by giving it Ferro-Aluminium,but it's still slow, the armour still isn't up to modern levels, and the LRMs are still going to exhaust their ammo too fast. The -500b shits the bed by making the PPC a Large Pulse Laser which reduces its range and damage, then adds Artemis to the LRMs so you can waste 17 tons after 4 turns.

The -600 still has shit armour and sacrifices a lot of range for what it gets. At least the change in engine size means it moves as fast as the average medium fighter, but the use of an LFE over an XLFE means that modern fighters will still slap its shit in since they have more guns and more armour.

Looks pretty badass though, for what little that matters.
>>
>>52470144
You could practice by doing other people's customs on commission. Or free. Or however you want. There's no shortage of people with custom rides they'd want art for, and if you have any notions about doing stuff for the /btg/TRO you'd need the practice translating concepts to paper anyway.

>>52470869
Looks quite a bit like the Loose art; I'm guessing you were looking to correct it?

>>52473069
Fun fact: with an XL engine and Endo Steel, and LFF armor, you can make a Wasp 1A at 15 tons, saving a lot of materials for other things. It costs less Cbills than a base 1A to boot. I considered making some ma & pa firm that does ultralight versions of the Bugs because they are even cheaper than the standard ones, and being lighter means they would be easier to store in say, a city as a police unit or something, which is what ultralights excel at.
>>
>>52474286

>and if you have any notions about doing stuff for the /btg/TRO you'd need the practice translating concepts to paper anyway.

>>
>>52474351
Anything with Machine Guns, because they can use rubber suppression rounds, or Fluid Guns for water cannons. There are also Tear Gas rounds for the SRM. There are a few existing actual 'Mechs like the Copper and the Peacemaker, but I've read a few places that Bugs are in use as well, usually modified.

>>52474365
Nah, I just mentioned it offhand. I'm not cruising for free art or anything either, if that's a concern. Just jawing with you about it. You're a good artist so I was just waxing about possibilities. Truth be told I would like to see some of your stuff in the book though.

I am not convinced rubber rounds out of .50cals will be less than lethal. I mean if you get hit in the knee that joint is wrecked, if it hits you in the head you are dead. Hey Shimmy you on? Got a question for you.

Just picked up your new Wasp mini at Guardian(you know the place) and was wondering about one of the parts. It "looks" like a three "barrel" comm antenna but i've only got one of them and none of the art for your Wasp has it included.

Anything you can do to clear this up?
>>
>>52475140
Beanbag rounds out of shotguns are roughly .60 cal so your statement doesn't make much sense. A 'mech's machine guns are electrically driven, so they don't need impulse to cycle the action like a regular gun would.
>>
>>52475140
I would imagine that they'd have very light loads under heavy projectiles, more like a 12 gauge beanbag than anything else
Hell, maybe more like plastic shells full of rubber balls, shoot at the ground and throw stingballs everywhere
>>
>>52475159
I feel ya.

>>52475196
Your right. I was just trying to think through in my head the consequences of this. I didn't know of this ammo type previously.

>>52475290
I was going to talk about mass and velocity with you, but >>52475397 makes a good point. Maybe the load these rounds light.
>>
>>52475427
Yes, you can talk mass and velocity all day long. Which is why I mentioned the electrically driven part. They don't need recoil to cycle the action yadda yadda. They can shoot soft, like how beanbags are fired and typically out of pump-actions since low-velocity/low-recoil rounds like that don't cycle reliably in semi-autos.
>>
>>52475450
This just in, sky is blue, water is wet, and rubber rounds have light loads. News at 11.

Kind of. I want to have a few, but the design is so goddamned fucking ugly. So I'm doing a refinement concept to start sculpting with. I really like the back and gun-mounts, and the Mackie-derived AC makes me happy. Not sure if I'm going to keep the original asymmetry, but regardless I want it to be recognizably a) Star League and b) a Striker. Just not so fucking hideous.

Because Knights in Shining Potatoes.
>>
>>52475572
Well good luck Anon. I kinda like the Striker myself, but I like mass-produced generic troopers like the Striker, Merlin, and Vindicator, so it'd be good to see a mini of it that's decent. I honestly was kind of hoping MWO would grab it since it has no "unseen" issues and we'd get an FD version but between Sketchanon doing his, which looks great, and you trying to update the mini, I can't say I'm entirely unhappy.

okay, random drunk thought.

Is there any mention in BT of RL strange interstellar phenomenon like Black holes besides the blakist hyperspace bases?

Why the fuck is hyperspace in autocorrect?
>>
>>52478014
Yes. Certain places are very hard to traverse or took a long time to colonize due to various stellar phenomena. The Pleiades Cluster, Pirate's Haven Cluster, Draconis Rift, Veil of Kerensky, and lots of others fall into this.

Rarely comes up in the novels though since you either have people that have routes calculated through the crap over hundreds of years or nobody goes there.

Also, Blakist hyperspace bases weren't real. They're just the rumors of Blakist hyperspace work, the first real advancement in that department in over five hundred years, turned up to eleven. Liberty Station could have easily been "a secret hyperspace base". Not on any map. Place where they developed Clarion Call, built the first SHPG, and wrote the programs for superjumps. So it was both a secret base and devoted immensely to hyperspace stuff. Contrast that to the rumors of MD's living on the surface of suns in some kind of shifted dimension.

>>
>>52474286
>You could practice by doing other people's customs on commission,

Doing that.

It's not translating concepts or vague ideas I have a problem with, it's the technical side of building a battlemech or omnimech that fits within the ruleset of the game.

If I started designing my mech idea, I would end up with stuff like dual ATM9 dual heavy PPC, guardian ECM clan XL things, or dual shoulder mounted HAG 20 and fucktons of lasers quad 'mech with a bipedal mechs upper torso.

My point would be stuff like the Genecaste wound up being true but not to the degree of a bunch of crazy ass crap that it implied. Same with Blakist hyperspace. They did a lot of stuff but living in hyperspace itself is bullshit. The books are never 100% true, but they have truth in them.

I'm interested in doing something different and making an Azami/Arkab Legion force for my players to use in a campaign.

Are there any units that might particularly stand out for the Arkab to use, or is it all just standard DCMS gear?

Additionally, what all are the Azami worlds? And are there any other Muslim-influenced worlds/states in BT?

>Like his ‘Mech, his unit could trace its origins back to the Star League, as could all of the really good and hip mercenary units. The 12259th had opted to remain in the Inner Sphere when General Kerensky left the Inner Sphere to go and found the Clans. They could have gone, but they were way too cool to just be a bunch of followers. They had fought for all of the major houses and had been betrayed by all of them at one point or another…because that’s what cool mercenary units do, get betrayed. Even ComStar rated them as “Posers,” which Brightstar treated as a badge of honor because ComStar was so damned weird to begin with. The constant double-dealing and selling-out by their employers had given the Lightfoot Lancers a reputation of not only being awesome but somewhat a flight risk.

They're mostly lights and mediums, I believe. So Panthers, Jenners, Spiders, Phoenix Hawks, Wolverines, and whatever others the Dracs build.

Of note is one Arkab legion has heavier elements than the others. And at least the 2nd apparently had preserved Star League era mechs possibly up to spec that surprised the Clans.

For heavy support the following mechs were built on Azami worlds and would fit for command rides: Atlas, Hatamoto-chi, Catapult and Bombardier.

>One collapsed
Nevertheless leaving behind a power structure and legacy that keeps its component parts together as a superpower to this very day.
>one is a country-sized factory that exploits its workers
So it is a modern nation state.

Additionally, if we're counting the PRC as communist (which people seem to love to do selectively as it suits their rhetorical needs, without ever asking the Chinese themselves) then ignoring Vietnam is just rude. Both are modern, industrialized/industrializing and relevant world powers.
Furthermore, where's this evidence that Cuba's perpetually on the brink of collapse? Because if it's from U.S.-borne Cubans, then literally no one else cares.

Opposing communism based on geopolitical outcomes is faulty at best.

If there is one thing you would change in 'Mech designs (pick as many 'Mechs as you would like), what would it be?

For me, I would SHRINK the missiles on basically every single 'Mech that isn't the Whitworth, because seriously, the HUGE missile racks on like 99% of 'Mech designs with missile weapons are like way too oversized, to the point that you would need a pocket dimension to store their ammo (the Timber Wolf blueprints/schematics come to mind, especially).

Even the Whitworth looks like it might have trouble fitting 120+ rounds of LRM missiles in its "compact" body, but hey, at least it's a start.

>How would you fix Drac 'Mechs?
It's kind of a complex problem. Some designs are fundamentally >good<, but have a few flaws (like the Grand Dragon, Hatamoto, etc). Others are just shit, but there are quite a few salvageable or niche designs. The Daikyu, for example, is a decent AA machine once they put LB-5X on it, and the -02 is a brutal infighter. But the base machine is middling at best.

As you say, the lack of DHS is a big problem, and the reason the Panther sucks for years; getting one of the worst weapons systems ever designed as a "signature" system does't help either. But after that there's a few other things to do.

First off, you need to give them access to a few more designs, or at least make them more widespread. The 3039 retcons helped with that, even though the Sentinel is an utter turd and the Bombardier is right up there with it. Quentin helps a lot too, yet a lot of Drac players avoid using the machines because Muh Samurais.

Some designs got patched in the Jihad/Dark Age books; the HPPC Gallowglas is mean as hell and they get a number of brutal EWAR and melee designs. Some even got retconned into the 3050s, like the LRM-15/ArtIV Catapults. The LAC-5 Mauler is an amusing bodyguard for a missile lance, but it has problems. -3R is fun as hell though.

I will say that a lot of the "problems" with the Drac inventory come from playing exclusively in 3000-3028 and 3050-3058 environments. Expand a little past that and the selection isn't quite so dismal.

I always thought missiles in BT should have been Thunderbolts from the start, with unguided rockets being the "swarm firing" weapons. Exposed missiles that are huge would make slightly more sense that way, since there are no reloads. You'd simply be advertising how many shots you have, and through FASA Magic™, they are just as armored as their locations so they don't detonate when you look at them funny.

But I mean, it's giant walking robots. There's got to be a limit as to what you find offensive regarding realism.

Six ML seems too heavy for this with the AC 20 there too, you are only going to get a few vollies before you are too hot to keep using them. Cutting them down to 3 can cram in two more heat sinks and an extra ton of AC 20 ammo.

Rock the cockpit and keep people shaking so they make a bunch of mistakes.

Sniper 'Mech or Missile boat. I did it in a Marauder with a Gauss and ERPPCs from which I had stripped all but a single ton of ammo. Stay at range and hit everyone with lightning.

The UAV one is even easier - Spot one, drop one, pop one of your own, done.

KMDD vs an assault 'Mech... well, just bring your dakka builds.

Secret Challenge seems to be "die surrounded by enemies shooting at you," so runing into the enemy team is perfectly valid, I think it awards another mil on top of a special warhorn.
>>
>>52493484
Hm. I guess I better stop dying away from the main battle then. I'm pretty sure I can get the ammo depletion one, and we'll see about the UAV one. I'll admit I've never even used one.

You're missing out on a good chunk of XP, a few C-Bills, information about the OpFor's composition and direction, target info, and the sweet bonus of your teammates seeing all that shit too. Sure, each UAV costs 40k, but that's easily remedied with a win or even a dcent loss.

The 1% that got space for ammo would be left with no space for anything else in those torsor sections, as far as I can tell.

LRMs are 8.3 kilos each, putting them at about the same mass as a Hydra or FFAR rocket. They should be about 70mm, where as the LRMS on some mech designs look to be 120 to 200mm.

This would run into a problem where, well, 70mm rockets on a 8 meter machine are pretty damn small.

SRMs are 10 kilograms each and tend to look like 100-120mm ATGM designed to be fired by infantry.

HTP: Glengarry. It's in the first trove but hard to find - 35TP002. Uses the Scimitar's art, but it's only a 20-tonner (instead of the usual 35) with the same speed profile. Which means it has basically no armor.
>>
>>52497268
I'm interested but I sadly don't get off work until 7pm EST.
>>
>>52492795
Well, for starters making some more upgraded versions.

Extant:
• Up-armored, LBX, and Ultra-20 versions of the Salad-shooter.
• LRM conversion of the Scimitar (actually quite a nice support unit - LRM-15 instead of the AC/5 and that's about it).
• NARC/TAG/ twin SRM-4 Scimitar (this one is fun as HELL)
• MRM conversion of the Saracen (dear God WHY)
• C3/RAC-2 Scimitar (eh).

Any further stacked-SRM versions are stepping on the toes of the Pegasus, which is jut fine as-is. I could definitely see an AC/10 version, as >>52493030
points out.

Personally, though, I'd like to see a "tank-killer" version of the Scimitar with a stack of Light-Fives or an LB-10X and a couple of SRMs, an XLFE version of the Salad-shooter with a Heavy Gauss Rifle (because Lyrans gonna Lyran), and something Blakie with a Snubbie, SRMs, and C3i. Not to mention the inevitable and highly-necessary Saracen with a turret full of MMLs and enough ammo to go roast some fucking infantry.

Download the latest version of Megamek to connect to the game. It'll pop up a window to let you enter the server address. If you haven't played with MegaMek before, I strongly recommend you get yourself familiar with the client now, it's got a bit of a learning curve but it's incredibly useful.

>>
>>52495905

I run an AToW campaign. You basically have to be willing to ignore some things at will for the sake of gameplay, unless you have really autistic players that like accountanttech. There is something to be said about the strength of the system, in that if you can imagine it, there's probably a related roll and table for it. Combat is also incredibly dangerous. It's not bad, but you need a GM who is either willing to improv or really good at remembering/referencing what table you need.
>>
>>52490523
Not a bad design, but I was trying to go for something that could be used in either a less-lethal role (ie, riot control, something a 'mech would be needed for) or could potentially be up-armed enough to engage in light combat duty.

Sucks the rules for fractional-ton ammo bins are gone. Could do a half-ton bin of tear gas, quarter-ton of frag, and quarter-ton of foam rounds for fire control + the fluid gun/water cannon.
>>
>>52498641
Okay. So, the scenario was published back when the BattleDroids-vintage vee rules were still legal, and CityTech had't finished ironing them out.

Still, the hovertanks in the old scenario book can't be the ones in question - they're fifty-tonners with an SRM-six in the turret. Nothing even remotely like them has ever been published. I'll ignore the published top speed ATM because no vehicle from that era has a remotely reasonable one.

The light weapons carriers, likewise, are packing either an LL or an LRM-10. You could probably get away with calling them Harassers (there's a twin-ML variant that's acceptable, or you could upgrade the ICE to a Fusion plant and add an LL variant). The Scouts are unarmed entirely.

They aren't gone if you're using handhelds. That's the point of the Asuka. The main 'Mech just has a Recce camera, some VGLs for stingballers (or inferno grenades..) and a pair of fluid guns for fire-fighting/riot control. The handhelds are an assault rifle with MGs and an underbarrel chemical-agent SRM-2, an ATM-3, and a Rocket-accordion.
>>
>>52499179
They are for 'mech mounted weapons, though.

If you're going for handhelds, just get a Wasp or Spider and built a hand-held weapon for it. They're very common so it's not hard to get one for that purpose.

True. They are pretty cheap. On the other hand, this costs almost a million less per unit, with a non-explosive engine and iTSM. Good for demolition and fire-fighting, as well - which the WSP and STG aren't. You get better maneuverablity out of a Bug though, and you can mount a Vee Flamer/Sprayer in one pretty easily.

But you basically have to ignore the Bugs and Commando if you want to justify SecurityMechs anyway.

Industrials, though, don't have enviro sealing. And since you're running with a FC engine, it does go boom. It also doesn't have as good armor as even a high-BAR industrial.

The main purpose of running a water cannon on my design was to use it as a water cannon would be used against rioters, and that + foam-bomb SRMs can be used as a stopgap until proper fire responders show up, should fire control be needed.
