can someone clarify how artillery works, especially with rapiers?
does the gun count as a model, or does only the crew?
can i target the gun specifically, or does it have to hit the crew?
finally, if an artillery model is hit with a weapon that forces a strength check, does the artillery piece automatically fail, as it has no strength value?
>>
I've decided I needed a break from the Ultras for a bit and have decided on Sons of Horus for my next project, as I feel like the "barbaric" look would serve as a nice contrast to the UM's Roman-esque aesthetic. However, I need help with a scheme. Does anyone have the FW Marine pics of the Sons of Horus, particularly any variant schemes they might utilize? If not, I have no problem looking through the book scans, I just thought I might ask. Thanks in advance.
>>
>>52134910
The gun model als counts as a weapon. The gun and crew function just like any other unit, so wounds are allocated to the closest model.
As long as there is at least one gun model, the whole unit has Toughness 7 against shooting attacks.
In close combat however the gun models are ignored, and the stats of the crew are used.

And finally, the gun models do indeed automatically fail Str tests.

Man, the new Secutarii look cool as fuck. Are their rules any good in Warhammer 3+k? The Peltasts with rad-carbines look like slightly more expensive but better Vanguard, so I imagine they'd be decent line troops.

How are you guys equipping the Axiarch? He looks pretty damn good for cost, 3W BS5 5++ IWND marine with a situational Iron Hands buff in a big unit who buffs his army well. I was considering Power Fist and MC Photon Gauntlet, since he buys them cheap.
>>
>>52136634
Also, do you think anyone would object to me using the normal Vanguard heads on my Carbine Peltasts? £20 is a lot for ten slightly different heads.

>>
>>52136634
Big problem with the axiarch is he's not an independent character, so is a little bit liable to get shot in the face unless you have a spare macrocarid for him to hide in or something.

Damn, didn't notice that. His death shouldn't stop the buffs as far as I can tell, though. Do you think that was another typo or it's intended? He does have that shield that only works in units.
Problem now is me deciding what Titan Legion I'll go for, or making up one of my own to paint the Secutarii. If I ever get a Titan, anyway, but Warhounds are cool and recasts exist.

You could add red, you could add blue, or brown. You know, like the Ultramarines 40k chapter and their colour codes. After all, Warsmiths are usually in Independent Expeditionary fleet mode, and left to their own devices.
People may tell you IWs are expected to look always dirty and shell shocked, but that's only in the midst of a siege (which is too common, to be fair). In transit to battlezones, their notBare ceramite plate was polished and shiny again.
If you decide to add yellow expect memes though.

As far as I can tell, it just gives them a special rule, it's not some kind of buff aura. It says "may be given one of the following bonuses" and nothing about that bonus being taken away if the criteria for giving them it is taken away afterwards. Also, if he was in reserve, say, he would also be "not in play" same as if he was killed, and the buff isn't denied there.

Yeah, if it was like that, it would be a bigger deal that Axiarch guy wasn't an IC, but it would mean you'd have some Alpha Legion-level versatility. Spend the first turn crouching next to a Shrouded titan with 4+ reroll 1 FnP5+ rerollable and tanking small arms like 12ppm Terminators, turn 2 activate Deconstructive Confluence and Haywire guys with Droplites and drown their Rhinos and such in Rending AP2 hammershot, then Turn 3 turn the turbolasers on any hard targets and blast the rest with either a storm of hammershots or Preferred Enemy radstorms.

As is, it's either PE:Infantry or FnP 5+, or certainly the latter with a Warhound. They're extremely cheap for what you get, too, 12ppm for a Marine (4+ FnP 5+ = 3+ statistically, and Kyropatris makes you functionally T4) with an Assault 3 18" Bolter and BS5/BS2 overwatch is amazing, even if they can't run.
>>
>>52137280
>Preferred Enemy radstorms
I ran some numbers, Hammershot behaves the very same same way as rad carbines. Costs +3pts, but has +12" range, can affect vehicles and keeps the Barrage secondary weapon. I'm phoneposting.

And even then, both are outdone by rapid firing Arc rifles, but those cost more.
>>
>>52137010
Is the guy in the middle Alpharius?
>>
>>52137369
Trick question!
You are Alpharius!
>>
>>52137347
Yeah, I think it's a question of whether you're transporting them in Triaros or not. If you are, you'll probably want the cheaper rad-carbines due to them being better against stuff in cover or with invulnerable saves, if not you want versatility, range and the ability to shield themselves or others. Still, 3ppm on an 11pt model is pricy enough to make it an actual decision.

I thought Shroud munitions were issued with to the Peltasts themselves, not with the Galvanic gun. Squads with Rad carbines should be able to shroud stuff.
>>
>>52137457
It says you need a squad with at least 5 casters in it to use Blind Barrage, so nah. It's basically another alternate ammo type. I'm probably going to use the Carbines, because we play on small boards a lot and 60pts is a bit much per squad when I can buy a Triaros for twice that.
Not sure about Omnispex though. Maybe on Hammershot squads because they actually pen 3+ armour? Probably on the Droplites to screw with Jink, but not the Carbine blocks.

>not taking arvuslites

I think 1-2 squads of Hoplites in an arvus/Triaros and 2-3 peltast squads hoofing it with hammershot rounds seems really appealing.

The Hoplites delet literally any vehicle out there (with the Triaros just hammering in the point) while the peltasts give support, stripping of 4.5~ wounds on a MEQ squad per turn. Make it even better with Thallax/Ursurax/reductor artillery to remove segments of the board at a time

As in, the name, silly. Deepstriking Hoplites are Droplites, and while Arc Peltasts can do double the damage, Hoplites are far cheaper.

May I suggest Arvasts? But then they sound like pirates, I suppose.
Not sure why you'd be dropping in those, though. Hoplites are cheaper by over 100 points, tougher and do more damage unless you're risky with the deepstrike. It's not like having 24 Haywire shots is much better than 12 unless your enemy is made up entirely of Fellblades.

>>52137900

Personally it's 1 or 2x12 Droplites, 2 or 3x20 Carbine Guard, then mandatory Thallax. Cost about the same, unless you buy the Peltasts Triaros, which are good enough for their points even without transporting stuff. Add Titan or Whalebird as required.

>>52138004

Iron Warriors if you just want to pick what guy to annihilate with artillery next, although that's no fun. You can never entirely abandon tactics, but I'd go for Inductii World Eaters. Can't score much, just charge and murder with S6 AP4 FnP 4+ basic dudes.

It's more of a light gray, which really isn't so bad. For this guy I used Ulthuan Grey as the base, white nuln oil for a wash and pure white highlights. Bit messy but it's a small mini. And you can get away with a slightly darker light gray as the base color.

Yeah, I can sort of tell the Sarum-pattern helmets apart because they have a curvier bottom to the 'mouth', but that just looks like a Mk VII helmet.

That said, it doesn't bother me if Mk VII helmets were a pre-existing design. Maybe one that wasn't highly regarded but was simpler to make. It'd fit with M41 tech being leftovers from earlier, better days.

Before I go, small update on the infantry portion of my company.
Used to be 600 tactical marines, in five 120 man sub divisions, six 20 man units in each.
Now it is 300 Bolter Grey Slayers, 300 Shield Slayers, 3 and 3 in each sub division
This way a unit of 20 can hold an objective with their bolters harassing the enemy before they get into CC, and the Shield Slayers can move out to slow down any enemy moving to the objective.

-Updated 1,000-ish marine split-

Infantry
300 standard bolter Slayers
15x 20 man squads.

300 Shield Slayers
15x 20 man squads.

150 tactical support marines
30x 5 man squads
>75x Plasma, 25x Volkite Caliver, 50x flamers

30 apothecaries
1x per Slayer squad

75 heavy support marines
15x 5 man squads
>20x Lascannon, 20x Missile, 20x Autocannon, 15x Heavy Flamer

75 terminators
15x 5 man squads
>50 Cataphractii "varagyr', 15 Tartaros

25 Deathsworn-as-command squads
5x 5 units, as of yet undecided armament

5 'Preators' as Ship-Captains.

The smallest unit would be one 20 man slayer unit, one support squad, one apothecary, and one Deathsworn-as-centurion for a 'Line platoon' (working title) of 27 marines. Gives the Ship-Captains a tactically flexible unit that if equipped properly can handle most threats.
Two of these paired together then get a five man unit of terminators, a five man Heavy support unit, a Dreadnought 'Ancient' and either three Predators, a LR, or a detachment of artillery.
Three of those units are then on one ship, and only if all three are present do the big guns come out like a Glaive, Fellblade, Mastadon, or Spartan come out.

The 1st Ship-company is all True-scale, and is there for small ZM or pick-up games.
It's and easy way to distinguish them on the table too, if I ever have the entire company on a table.

I'm calling this an oversight, there's no fucking way he's not supposed to be an IC. you can even equip him the same as a hoplite; why would you have a one-man phalanx? that's just dumb.
at least playing it RAW if he's not your warlord you don't really lose anything by leaving him out in the breeze. he's only 60 points naked for a huge troops buff, I'd say that's worth giving up a kill point for.
>>
>>52141985
the BoP box is a good starting point for troops, since IW usually use either MkII or MkIII armor. custodes and sisters sprues still seem to go for a fair amount on ebay so even if you're only buying it for the marines it's a pretty good deal.

beyond that, IW is all about shooting, being stubborn, and artillery. they have heavy weapons squads that are actually worth a damn and double as very solid anti-air, a RoW that is potentially seriously broken if you spam phospex mortars (don't do that if you want people to actually play you), and terminators that used to be a lot cooler when they were elites slots but at least are finally getting a model so you don't have to spend a goddamn fortune on cyclone missile launchers if you still want to run them.

They don't take those anymore, or at least not from outside their established circle. They used to.
I thought about applying there some years ago, but now I've gotten to a position where it'd be a step down. Also I'd probably go insane from being unable to force through fixes. I doubt NOBODY there notices the things we do, I think it's more a case of it'd cost too much time, money and staffing to sort it out, so fuck it.

Mechanicum and customisation.

Does the 30k mechanicum have the crazy customisations and almost non standardisation thing of the 40k mechanicus.

I've always wanted to do a Strogg styled mechanicus force and my local group has pretty much become 30k only, would a thagmata army that uses basically none of the proper minis be accurate/acceptable?
>>
>>52142559
if anything you have a lot more lore justification for doing really crazy shit with a taghmata. every forge world is a little bit different, and some are a lotta bit different. since a taghmata is more like a feudal military force raised from whatever they can muster on the forge world and surrounding support worlds they tend to have some really weird shit going on.
>>
>>52142528
With the prices FW asks it is a bit rediculeous how many errors there are though. But then again Apple is also doing great...

Sounds cool after a quick google, anyone who would refuse to play you with that wasn't worth playing in the first place, as long as you keep roughly to base sizes and model dimensions. Go nuts, and it tends to be cheaper than FW too if you know people you can get minor bitz you need off rather than going to bits sites.

I'm doing a crazy one myself, a Magos Genetor Explorator fleet with largely biological units and weapons that everyone's probably sick of me going on about. Centrepiece still on hold until I can find a base model costing less than £150. Might buy myself the 6 Thallax and some other stuff to do while I look, though. Going to have Stormfiend Castellax, Crypt Ghoul levies, some Dune Navigator-style Magi and bio-weapons all over the damn place.

RIP Whale-Stormbird, chaps. May she rise again once the internet coughs up something I can afford :(.

>>
>>52142925
yeah, that's the big thing for me. the HH books cost too much for them to be this sloppy. there's major mistakes or missing rules in every rules section of inferno. I thought people were overreacting when the book first came out but it is really that bad. considering how fucking long it took for this to come out there's no excuse for this level of quality control in the writing. it's not like there's even that many pages of rules...
>>
>>52143008
Well, that's just for the main body. Seeing as I'd need two or three extra kits (Probably Baneblade, Firestorm Redoubt and something flying to make a bridge and engines from) and a whole bunch of materials and random parts to actually finish the thing, ideally I don't want to have it cost more than me just buying a Warhound Titan and weapons straight up.

Alright guys. I've never played 30k but I am thinking of starting an army. I absolutely love breacher squads. However I've seen anons here say they aren't always great. One anon in particular said the best choice for breachers would be thousands sons raptora. Now I don't have any particular affinity for the thousand sons, but if they give me the best chance to field breachers hands down, I'm in. I am not fond of their paint scheme so I would paint them in their pre-primarch livery. I am not in possession of any of the necessary books or rules, any anons point me in the right direction? Even better a quick run down of why raptora breachers are a better option than breachers under another legion.

I hand these mugs bolter and a set of power armour, and they give me their lives. Who needs a planetary system when I got Magnus' Thousand Sons?
>>
>>52143380
First of all, download the rules and play zone mortalis if you want breachers
>>
>>52143380
Mainly because of +1 to invulns that raptors give.
The other two legions that come close to making breachers worth it are IF (because Stone Gauntlet) and U (because 1/2 price power swords).
>>
>>52143378
You know what's not waac?
Winning with no cost
>>
>>52143447
I'm fine with zone mortalis but I'm thinking it will be harder to find people to play with, and I'd rather field them in a regular non-restrictive list.
>>
>>52143380
In addition to the obvious choices of Thousand Sons (better invul saves), Ultramarines (invictarus suzerins) and Imperial Fists (better toughness), two legions that can do surprisingly well with breachers and the Raven Guard and Alpha Legion, purely by dint of being able to infiltrate them. Breachers are a defensive unit that you mainly want standing on an objective being difficult to shift, and those two can get there breachers in place turn 1, without having to pay loadsa points for land raiders (which also restrict squads to 10). Also means you can line up grav gun shots turn 1 with a bit of luck.

What do y'all think of this for 1000 points?

I figure I will use polux for deep striking him and the warders using the nuncio vox
>>
>>52143380
I would pick the legion you like the most and just run Breachers anyway. Compromising your fluff choices just to get a better chance to win is kind of lame, if you'll forgive me for saying.
Other legions have decent to good breachers. You can just manipulate the options to make TS the best ones.

All the best with your love of shield dudes tho, they're great models.
>>
In a Sub-Orbital Strike Wing, can you take vulture gunships?
>>
For my head of the gorgon list, I have 2 heavy support unused. My plan originally was a 3x predator squadron with lascannon sponsons and autocannons.

But I've got the points and slots to instead do 1x sicaran venator and 1x sicaran with lascannon sponsons. Should I go with that instead?

The predator autocannons are fairly important because other than my 3 thudd guns and two dreads (cortus with assault cannon + deredeo) I don't have a lot in my list designed to put out a lot of long range multiple shot firepower. But the sicaran would still give me half as many shots while being twin linked as the predator squadron (though losing 4 lascannons) and it gets backed up by the S10 AP1 ordnance 2 venator.
>>
>>52143672
I'm actually right there with you on that, I just don't want to get curb stomped by everyone and give my dudes a chance. If It's possible to make a good list with another legion I will definitely consider my options. And also I don't mind the pre-primarch thousands son scheme, would just have to come up with some fluff. Going to try to figure out all my options.
>>
Speaking of Breacher talk, what do people think of medusan immortals?
>>
>>52143380
You don't have to run Thousand Sons - and I really wouldn't if you're not very interested in them. Fluffwise, they didn't do much between Prospero and Terra. They've also got a "flavor of the month" stigma because their rules appear to be very strong.

Imperial Fists have a rite of war (Stone Gauntlet) that uses Breachers as compulsory troops and gives them +1T under certain conditions. IF all get +1BS for bolter weapons, too. Some people do really well with it - just remember they're the anvil and you need something else to be the hammer. Their special Breachers (Phalanx Warders) don't have that great full-sized shield and don't offer much for the extra points, imo. No one uses their new RoW that lets them take teleporting Phalanx Warders (which doesn't sound that bad, imo).

Iron Hands have Immortals, special Breachers that look fantastic and can all take volkites. On the downside, they're +50 points for FNP (5+) and being able to snap shot instead of sweeping advance. Like Phalanx Warders and a lot of other legion-specific units, they suffer from the generic book coming out later with a bunch of points reductions. IH's legion rules incude -1S to all incoming shooting, and there's a new RoW that takes Immortals as troops (and they get stubborn if in the enemy deployment zone) and gives all Legiones Astartes units (i.e. infantry) Hatred (Traitors).

No one else does Breachers as well as those two. Don't let that stop you, though. They're not that bad, especially when so many players don't get much use out of their troops choices.
>>
>>52143380
Personally I rate AL or RG breachers higher, purely because those can start the game where they need to be, make taking graviton guns on them viable, and allow for an apothecary to join them. Specially if you add a Vigilator you can usually choose which vehicle you want to rape turn one and scout even closer, with the added bonus of getting stealth for a better coversave. It really gets hilarious if you play the Recon Company ROW and have them gain shrouded too.

It's specially fun when people stopped using phospex mortars because no AP 2 and the fucktons of Str 5 hits usually killing a unit no matter what ; re-roll saves with Voidhardened, add an apothecary and those breachers are basically invulnerable to any blast or template weapon that isn't AP 3.

Iron hands breachers also are decent with the -1 Str for enemy shooting, and they even have their own version of breachers with more weapon options and FnP that can't be removed by sniping the apothecary.

TS raptora breachers are rated highly purely because their invulnerable save gets boosted to 5++/4++ but they'll still need transportation to get where they need to be. Which usually means a land raider with no room to add an apothecary, which is why I like AL/RG more.

No dumbass, you miss the point. Aside from people not wanting to play with you, Waac means all you care about is winning, no matter the cost.

40k Eldar is crawling with waacfags, but that doesn't make their lore any less intriguing or their models any less cool. But it does mean the first, last, and only concern of a ton of their player base is 'how do I win games easily', which is totally against the spirit of play, which is for everyone to have fun in a """strategic""" game.

Mines MkIII, narrowly beating out MkV. Up arumored and feirce, but also practical and modular.

True enough. For me they've always done okay on the tabletop, but in Zone Mortalis they really shine. For something like 300 points you can grab 8 guys with volkite chargers and 2 with meltaguns/graviton guns, which actually does really good work.

Anything short of a lascannon (or powerfist in CQC) struggle to take them out, and they'll do fair damage in turn. In Iron Hands tradition, they're a work horse that does well if it's treated right.

Work well with Gorgons too imo

Speaking of Gorgons, why has no one mentioned that they're better than Terminators?

Obviously they beat out all other contenders on armor saves, but for invulns they (again, obviously) beat regular/Tartarus, but also beat Cataphractii, taking .44 damage per wound after saves, compared to Cataphractii's flat .5.

However, they will lose out when you bring in Lascannon or other S9+ stuff, or S8 in close combat. Not bad at all, specially since they can bring Graviton guns along for the ride.

Btw, what happens to LA rules when you join a squad without it? Obviously individual buffs would stay individual, but would things like the IH -1str to shooting stack if you put him in a Secutarii Squad?

If you're looking for name recognition, you're in the wrong place. Again, if you want to have people recognize you make like DGanon, Knighanon, or Saint Scananon and post models to the point of recognition.
