The last elf NPC in our campaign was actually a dragon in disguise. He got us out of a sticky situation but was also kind of a dick and infuriatingly vague about shit. Plus his way of saving us was dumping us in the middle of a hellhole of a desert on a different continent.

We left him to have a second honeymoon with his vaguely yandere wife who he tried to escape centuries ago in exchange for a few magic items and being told the next step of the quest. Some of us even slightly regretted it.

You have to worship Irori, but that works for a Lawful or Neutral Evil character just fine. Just be all about them gains, and maybe purging the weak that the strong might rule (or something).

How much backstory is too much backstory, both in terms of actual length and in terms of detail? What, ideally, should be established and clarified about a character in their backstory? Would you be satisfied with someone who has a decent backstory for their character even if it's all stored in their head instead of written out for you to read (assuming of course that they've still told you the backstory and you're not just taking their word for it that it exists)?

To be fair that's not even an impossibility, in my game Hemlock was caught up by Magnimar's bureaucracy for about two weeks, and the PC handled Thisletop in the meanwhile. Still, the Magnimar guards stuck around and increased patrols as a result of Hemlock's hearing and as a consequence, a crackdown on goblin tribes happened.

If there's one thing I like about writing for mystery campaigns, it's learning all sorts of weird facts. For example, laundry chemicals aren't enough to dispose of a dead body, but lye (which is used in food prep and soapmaking) is. So one of the crime scenes will have to change from Washer's Row to one of the slaughterhouses. Which is a shame, because Washer's Row already has a criminal element that could be interesting for another case.
