Need to scratchbuild 2 of each Airbursting Fragmentation PRojectors and Cyclic Ion Blasters for my Commander.

For the blaster I was thinking using the Pathfinder Ion Rifle barrel stuck to a custom housing while the frag was going to be essentially a fancy-looking grenade launcher. Any of you ever built these?
>>
I feel like this questions gets asked atleast once per Week but what is a decent Airbrush setup to begin with? Preferably one that is easy to clean.

Am i supposed to wear a mask/ spray in a separate room when airbrushing or is it fine to do it in your normal hobbyroom with decent ventilation?

I love that you gave me the idea, but I hate you for making me spend $50 on a helmet. I was totally ready to suspend my "everyone gets a helmet" mandate for the inquisitor until I saw that first headswap.

Man, are those Grishnak models going for that much? I was thinking about picking up a few of those girlies. How many you get for that price? They look amazingly detailed. Only thing I'm wary about is them looking too good compared to any new plastic sisters GW might put out.

Also, could be worse. I bought $80 dollars worth of Immolators and got two helmets from the whole deal, both with some pretty noticeable mold slippage.
>>
>>52029953
> How many you get for that price?
nah, it's just canuckbux being shit

It was the one set of five sisters for.. 2080 RUB. Set's got six helmets in it, technically, but he threw an extra in because of some (fixable) damage on one cast.

Wouldn't make an army of them simply because I hate monopose armies, but they'll be a fun little side project.

How do I fix paint that's chipped off a metal model? Do I need to basecoat the exposed area then go over it with the colour, or just paint the colour straight onto the metal and hope no-one notices? There's a few small chipped areas on the front, but bigger ones on the back.

I really need to get a proper carry case rather than just using tupperware bawkses...

Who here isn't a grown up? Think you're mistaken a hobby for the item itself. Like looking at a coin collector going "oh yea, you think your rich just because you got all those coins huh?!?". Or shouting away at a stamp collector by going "Oh you send a lot of post cards do you?!? Think its cool to collect things you don't really use huh?".

My point being, you are looking at plastic (and sometimes resin and metal) model building and instantaneously relates them to a childish toy. In many regards the way most westerner reacts to a Manga for grown ups, its contents is irrelevant, its a comic and thus aimed at children. That its story is about mass murder, rape and grotesque demons has nothing to do with it.

Now Im not in denial here, I know full well I'm a nerd, or engaging a nerd hobby, but is that alone in your opinion enough to not have a life outside it? Say, have a family, full time job, "grown up" obligations and so on? Though I did start this hobby when I was about 13, Im now 35, is it not the way of life that you take on the adult role when you grow? Or should one become a kidult for the sake of the hobby?

It's very well executed but the OSL on the treads spoils it for me. The lights aren't angled down enough for it to show on the treads like that and the rest of the paintjob doesn't support the brightness of the lights. It would be better just illuminating the light casing and a little below rather than spilling onto the tracks in my opinion.

Lovely yellow though and I really like the mud weathering.

Crackling medium is available from a range of suppliers, vallejo is one. GW do a range of texture paints but they're very expensive if you want to base an army with them.

For use, apply thickly on top of a coat of acrylic paint. The thicker the crackle coat, the bigger the cracks.

What material is the nerf blaster made from?

Those sorts of toys tend to be glossy so a wash would probably flow over it well, but you'll have trouble getting acrylic paints to stick to it. You'll need to seal it very well after you're done, or it will all chip off very quickly.
>>
>>52032360

TOO MUCH. Swap the axes sure. Give him some chains and maybe a pistol. If you wanna change the head out why not. A spike with heads or two on the pauldrons maybe. But what they hell is with the random admech bits? Nien. Does not work, does not go with the rest of the model. Just give him a CSM backpack and call it a day.

Hey Wip, got another question. I'm sorry for the terrible quality and lighting in the Pic, but it's good enough for my purposes. I just wanted to get opinions on the backpack. Do you think it works? proportions wise I mean.

black's an obvious choice
>>
>>52028780
That skin is so clean, what's your method?
>>
>>52033350

I can't believe black never crossed my mind. Especially seeing as it's a massive part of the colour scheme. Good idea. My only problem with black is that it's not going to provide much "pop" to the models, which with the dark gunmetal (and bronze I intend to throw on) I think they need so I'll have to think about it.

Any one have thoughts/advice on areas I can improve?
>>
>>52028780
Meh the skin looks boring, bot enough hoghlight / shadowing in the face and arms, the pecx and abs look ok though

I usually do not line highlight but you must do some line highlights for faces

The fleshtone base upon the kislev flesh is applied

Bugman is unecessary just use cadian, reikland, cadian, then highlight with kislev

If you do that you'll wear off the paint that's already there and I imagine colour matching is a bitch to do one something like that. Honestly I'd recommend priming over the existing paintjob and redoing the whole thing yourself but you may not want that.

>>

The secret is that any paint can be used as a base coat. Higher-pigment base/foundation/extra opaque/whatever paints are fairly new, and we used standard paints to basecoat back in the 90's and early 00's (also 80's I suppose bu that was before I entered the hobby).

Here is the same model with nun oil reapplied to the joint.

The process:
Imperial Primer
Warplock bronze (With Magnus the red tint)
Heavily shade with nihalak oxide
Dry brush with Magnus the red
Dry brush with Sycorax Bronze
Wash with Nuln oil.

I'll be going with grey, purple or blue for the lenses.

I'm not a good painter, building up color from the initial highlight of the oxide makes it easier for me to control the effects without having to worry too much about going overboard with the drybrushing.

Thats the thought process.

Alrighty.
Still completely unarmored, without Mechadendrites and sloppily propped up with putty and having a Taser Lance as placeholder for where his mace will be BUT this is what I have so far.

A charging pose with the legs only looks good if his torso is turned a bit, which would look weird since the head only looks forward, so I'll stick to having him stand on something. Feet will be the Killakan (?) clawed feet.

Planning to give him a robe or at least one around his waist when everything else is planned and assembled. No idea what to do with the top of his head, since that might look a bit boring as is.

Yeah, it's lopsided. Everything's just being held together by putty so far, apart from the torso in itself. Main concern is currently how to properly attach the arms and armor plate them up. Was thinking that shoulder flaps could be decent, as well as big armored "bracelets" to beef the lower arm up a notch.

And huge thanks for the compliment. When I started this guy I was planning to still be able to use him as a proxy for Cawl or an Ironstrider in non-unique character games.
Now this fucker's twice the size of a Kastelan robot and Cawl. Don't know exactly how tall Magnus or a Knight are but I feel like he can almost compete with that.

Not bad for your fourth model! It looks like it's ready to be played. Although I'd recommend redoing the eyes. The left eye is basically a pink blob, and the right eye isn't in the center. Also the dark red you were using underneath has spilled over onto the face of the helmet. That's easy to neaten up with some blue.

I'm also seeing splotches where it looks like you've accidentally painted a painted a little bit of a wrong color. For example, look at the feet, which have brown from the basing. This is really easy to fix, you just neaten up with the color that's supposed to be there.

I'd also recommend you be very careful when you're highlighting. If you look at the knees, you can tell that the highlight color went on a little sloppy. You want to be paying the most attention when you're doing highlights and small details. This is where you REALLY want to have a very small detail brush.

Keep it up! You'll only get better from here.

Dont get a ton on your brush, a good wash is about control. Wash the whole section all at once i.e. the helmet or the thigh. if you do a piece in 2 or more steps itll look like shit. if you get too much wash somewhere, wash and dry your brush and itll work like a sponge to take the excess off
>>
>>52037953
put the models down when you take photos

apply shade to the whole area or it will leave a line

sometimes shade pools up in weird places. Keep an eye on it and if you see it happening tild the model or use your brush to redirect the shade

make sure the shade is fully dry (1+ hours) before moving on

Just make sure to use that shade only where there's actual recesses. People often do it on flat surfaces and mess up perfectly fine paint because of it. Fix up any spots where it 'spilled' from the recesses with yellow afterwards to neaten things up.
Looks pretty good so far, especially considering how much of a pain yellow can be.

I personslly never wait a full hour for my shades. Longest I had to wait was 30 minutes so far. The "one hour" thing is really just to make absolutely sure that it's completely dry no matter how deep the crevice.

I also never thinned down a shade/wash/glaze before. Makes them too watery to use with any precision in my eyes and doesn't give much benefit.

Lots of contrast- good. This skin will look great at tabletop distance, your golds just need a silver highlight to match and obvious unfinished areas are obvious.

Consider that on muscle ridges like that, lit from above, the highest highlights will be right underneath one of the darkest recesses.

Unless you're trying to go for fatty tissues and muscle, in which case just grab a butt-ton of references and watch https://youtu.be/X9du3Mkw46Y

Eyes, a focal point, could also be more interesting, consider using the same colour as the gems/eyes on the shield.

Nice tabletop standard, unless you're aiming for display there's not a lot to say other than that the rocks on their feet could be blended into the sand and rocks of their bases better. Like, a lot better. Try the zandri dust coloured sand texture paint, or just go back with your pva and sand.

I can barely even make a decent cloak for a normal Marine model and need a bigger one than that. My main problems are usually getting them to stay in shape, having them stick to the rest of the model, having a flat, fingerprint-less surface and getting either smooth or tattered rims.

Oh nice, you've already started.

Yeah just follow https://youtu.be/A89Z5Ogu0Qc like that other anon suggested and nothing will go wrong. Try and be neat and use that small brush to get reikland in the recesses.

By the way, when you get to highlighting, dorn yellow is real nice to edge with.
>>
>>52038603
IS there a difference between highlighting and edging? I have screaming skull for one, and dorn yellow for the other.
>>
>>52038515
I wouldn't worry too much about thinning the shade. You can hit the joints with it too.

And nah. You don't have to wait an hour unless you're getting a lot on. 10-15 is about right for recess washing only IMO. It helps to do a couple at once for speed (later when you've done your testmarine).
>>
>>52038650
I shall name him testy.
>>
>>52038641
Edge highlights are just highlights applied to sharp edges. Usually good to do with the side of your brush.

Screaming skull is actually about the same color, just a bit less yellow and more white so I'd keep it for the lightest areas you want to highlight.

Dorn yellow is specifically designed with edge highlighting in mind. Its a bit thinner than other paints and just handles well compared to a layer or base paint. You'll see when you try it.

You are on the right way. Try to fix the blue on the metallic parts of the backpack and the breather and the metal paint on the right arm. Don't bother too much with the eyes right now, in a few minis, you should be able to fix them without much effort.

I will recommend you to try paint a less curvy model and start practicing the shades. It looks like you can become a great painter if you try it, good luck!

Something - specifically, the blue on the side exhaust ports - tells me that you glued the backpack on before painting. Because of the modular nature of their armour, Space Marines are special in that you can leave off so many of their parts, paint them separately, and have them look like they belong there when you glue it all back together. Arms, bolt guns, shoulder pauldrons, backpacks, and sometimes even the head can benefit from this tremendously.
>>
>>52041609

He's gonna get a huge caduceus/power mace. That thing is just a placeholder.

Also, it's supposed to be a customized Ironstrider frame built for combat so it technically is half a walker yes, even in the house rules I made for him he takes extra damage from Haywire because of it. Was trying to make it look more like a guy in a giant robot suit, as people previously (rightfully) pointed out that it just looks like a Dark Mechanicum mech and Cawl also has his own arms still sticking out.

I agree with >>52042597; the plates look pretty sharp. What I was thinking might benefit you is adding some flow improver (I see you have Citadel paints - try Lahmian Medium) to you paints when you're working on that blending. The paint will take longer to dry, allowing you to work in another colour while the first one is still wet.

>Does anyone know if the space Marines that come with the Kill Team box are specific to a chapter? Or are they just generic tactical marines?

They are generic tactical marines - the same thing that you would get if you buy the current vanilla tac squad box: Sergeant, nine squadboyz, rokkit chukka, and one each of the four Space Marine special weapons. Pic related - they're the sprues.

They're a little less tactical than some previous models, though. The shoulder pauldrons are blank, meaning you could really stick 'em in anywhere bolter ladz would fit.
>>
>>52042682
I mean, it's nice, but it could've been a lot better. Those wings look very flat, and are a mixed opportunity (just a small glaze towards the end of blue would really helped them stand out more, for instance). The metal looks alright, could use a few additional highlights. Doves looks flat, so does the face. The parchement is great though, and the base is pleasant.

Overall>>52042308
was better, with more colors blended together, a nice (if a bit large) background, good use of verdigris and rust. The only complaint from me would be that the teeth could've popped alittle more, but still - this should've won imo.

Here... just have this one. These Dark Angels were from the army that won the bronze. It should give you an idea of what kind of models were passed over.

My point in >>52043195 is that the voting system for contests like these can easily be skewed by just a few extra people colluding and voting for a specific model. I don't find it unusual at all, as >>52042747 suggested, that the nice new shiny model probably garnered some extra votes simply because of what it was, but in our case, I think there was a little bit more going on.

I have Screamer Pink, Naggaroth Night, Emperor's Children and Fulgrim Pink currently. I was thinking a combination of Screamer, Emperor's Children and Fulgrim Pink (from base to highlights in that order).

Don't make everything pink and purple, it'll jsut muddy together. Since Slaanesh loves excess, a bright contrasting colour for the metallics (like gold, or a garish yellow) would probably help,.

I was thinking Pink armour with Gold trim and maybe gold metallics instead of steel.

Or is even all pink armour too much?

I think what you have sounds pretty good, but do a test model to make absolutely sure. Don't want to regret your choices halfway through a squad.

How about now? Still trying to figure out how to alter the pulse carbines, although I was originally going to fluff them as having been modified with a higher rate of fire and a coolant system instead of a grenade launcher.

If you won't give us a working one, then at least mark it as out of order.

Looks really good but I feel the ponytail would work better as some other color. It's a bit too much purple atm.

Thank you, i appreciate the comments.

One thing i have wondered, is it always best to assume that "the light" when working out your highlights and such comes from directly above? Assuming that, is it retarded to place the model under a lamp and see where the light is strongest and such?

I've always struggled to understand what parts should be light and what dark, other than obvious recesses. I know its quite a simple thing to grasp but i think i may be retarded.

Wrong

Table top standard is that it is pleasing from avout an arms length away, but is less pleasing when viewed up close, 3 colors and a wash minis are easy to spot a mile away and look like shit

It does notnmatter how many laters of paint he puts on, if it looks poorly executed its poorly executed and detracts from the overal paintjob
>>
Does any one have a link to some decent painting guide PDFs? The link in OP is dead and I'm not looking for GW stuff, more for display quality than tabletop.

New thread when?

>Assuming that, is it retarded to place the model under a lamp and see where the light is strongest and such?

No that's not retarded, it's actually quite a good idea. If you're having trouble visualising it, use a ping pong ball or something as your 'source', hold it where you want the light to be coming from and then imagine where light would strike your model. That said, most people paint as though their model was standing outside in direct sunlight, so the top of the miniature is brightest and the parts below are in shadow.
>>
>>52046218
Wrong.

Tabletop standard is three colors and a wash, and is a term used for shit-average miniatures.

Stop using it unless you're trying to be a dick. This is your last warning.

kek, fuck off lad

that's tourney-standard, not tabletop

tabletop standard is anything painted decently but not to display level

I'm going to start calling everything tabletop standard to trigger you
