So in running a Norse campaign, after reading through the tome of corruption do you think that there would be any increase/decrease in trade with Norsca after the storm of chaos? Maybe after the hordes have dissipated the Marienburgers are trying to use the time of peace to get a buffer state in addition to Kislev?
What kind of effects would increased trade have on the Norse?

I've seen them made from normal warriors kit. Usually some Chaos Warriors bits and greenstuffed curly beards. I guess it depends what style you like, I always preferred the 'big hat' ones.

Plus, considering how expensive Hammerers are, why aren't you just buying the Russian Alternative ones?

Beastmen in Naggaroth were brought up last thread; here's a relevant bit of fluff. Though personally I'd rather just have Native American themed warherds. They are too cool a culture to be kept to only Forest Goblins.
>>
>>51893847
That theme may be possible now that Ungor have bows.

Not sure about the respect for nature though. Maybe they perceive the chaos gods as animals?

>>51893962
You could argue the respect for nature might just come from that they see themselves as purely natural things, more than civilized Dark Elves or Humans or anything like that.

And there are some cool bits of Native American myths to steal from. You could easily work a lot of pic related to perceptions of Chaos or daemons.
>>
>Native American themed warheard

Led by Beastlord Shitting Bull.
>>
>>51893847

I think having Indian themed Beastmen in what is geographically North America is low hanging fruit even for GW.
>>
>>51894347
They put Egyptians in Egypt and Italian city states in Italy, as well as keeping in a vague China and Japan analogue when there was really no need.

The only reason GW would avoid low hanging fruit anymore is that they aren't as easily copyrighted.
>>
>>51894347
Do you have problems with Cathay, Norsca, Lustria, Ind, Khemri, Bretonnia, and the Empire as well?
>>
>>51894420
>>51894427

No I don't have a problem with any of those historically based armies because none of those imply that a said culture are a bunch of slavering sub-humans.

Plus, Ancient Egyptians, Vikings and the rest are long gone.
>>
Does anyone know of any good market places for buying old Warhammer miniatures?
>>
>>51894448

>>
>>51894517

>>
>>51894517

Plenty of eBay shops deal exclusively in old OOP Citadel models. Depends how old 'old' is. You can get some 80's and 90's stuff for a fairly good price, although usually on a per-model basis.
>>
>>51894448
>No I don't have a problem with any of those historically based armies because none of those imply that a said culture are a bunch of slavering sub-humans.

You don't base them off actual natives, but off their monsters, instead. Even if you do offend them, who cares - stone age civilization with less than a million living descendants.
>>
>>51894448
Who says they have to be? Tribal does not equal savage subhumans; just look at Norscans or Kurgan, or the very Aztec Lizardmen.

GW did make a huge mistake with the Pygmies, sure. But they could have easily made some vague African kingdoms and clans instead, which would have helped explain the trade between Cathay and the Old World, and may have helped open up the Southlands as an actual place fun flesh out, beyond Lizardmen and Orcs.
>>
>>51894448
These "slavering sub-humans" have metallurgy.
>>
>>51894598

It's not the tribal part, it's that they literally are sub-human, ie. half man half beast.

The problem with WHTW is that it doesn't convey the bleakness that a game like Mark of Chaos did. It's slightly more cartoony. Also the voice actors for the most part suck, especially the norsemen who should be throthing manly monsters instead of normal men. Vermintide is excellent though.
>>
>>51891699
So, im working on a female Battle Mage of the Amehyst order mini as a hobby, when a thought came to me; Is there any reason why battle mages dont wear armor into combat. For some, it makes sense, since Bright mages need more range of motion, and Amber Brotherhood would probably dislike it, but why wouldn't colleges like Light wear it? Even the Gold college only wear a few armored pieces.

Also, would any one have any good sources, or stories on the Magical Colleges? After reading through the lexicanum and Fandom wiki pages, I've really fallen in love with that bit of the lore, and I want to read up about the Magical colleges

Shame that the mods aren't more extensive in their capabilities. An import of mark of chaos's music + a dark filter could go a long way.

IIRC it's just some line about how members of her order are legally male because they are expected to devote their life to the cause of her homeland. It didn't really stick in my mind, though I guess people have different levels of sensitivity to that sort of stuff.

>>51901395
The main rulebook of warhammer fantasy mentions that armour interferes with the complicated motions of casting spells a la DnD, so the most wizards can't wear armor, with a few exceptions like chaos shamans and vampire etc.

I'd recommend reading the short story 'Who Mourns a Necromancer' by Brian Craig.

Not only is it a more humanizing look at a practitioner of necromancy, a fair portion of the story is phrased as a presentation of an argument, with a final rebuttal to it by another character, which has a fantastic effect on catching a reader off-balance. And it's all the more interesting when you know the emotional stakes of both characters making the argument, with the ending leaving things up to reflection.

It also has some minor interest in mentioning a University at Gisoreux.

Grim is not the same thing as grimdark. Warhammer billed itself as "a grim world of perilous adventure" back in 1995 with the release of the first edition of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. The tagline for the cancelled Warhammer Online was "it's no fantasy" and the developers declared their intention to present the Warhammer setting "in all it's dark and gritty glory." Warhammer Online entered development in 2002 and was cancelled in 2004, the same year Storm of Chaos took place. Warhammer is not at all bright and it was presented as dark, grim and gritty long before Storm of Chaos took place.

Oh wow.
I'm sympathetic to the argument because 5th edition was somewhat different tonally. But I distinctly remember people complaining about the exact same thing before the Storm of Chaos.

And Warhammer has always had a dark tone. The exact degree is up to debate, but it's stupid to think that it was ever just lighthearted.

6th Edition question on wizards.

Is there ANY reason to mount these guys?

I asked this in the last thread and a bunch of people said no, just wanted a second opinion if there was some secret I was missing.

I seems like you would always want mages on foot hanging out within 5" of a friednly unit so they can't be targeted by missiles/spells all while slinging their own.

Even if they were the Army general!
>>
>>51902999
Maybe with Bretonnians and their damsels? If you keep them on foot that resigns them to a peasant block.
>>
>>51902999
If your units are mainly cavallery, you might want to have a mounted wizard, since it can be difficult to keep them within the range of your units.

It's probably due to the time the game is set in. Sure, the setting is grim and always is pretty grim, but the End Times and major invasions from the north haven't happened yet, so the game leans towards a more 'unsettling but not absolutely chaotic' feeling

Also, the sound design is astounding. Hearing my marauders actually yell 'SKULLS FOR THE SKULL THRONE' while charging in is awesome, as I didn't expect that at all

Now if only there was a 'FOR SIGMAR' chant my Reiksguard yell while charging in (or is there?)
>>
>>51903563
I haven't played enough with the Reiksguard to say - I know there's plenty of prayers to Sigmar, Ulric, and Myrmidia at various points. Lots of fun little dialogue lines.

>Keep [someone's name] back; I promised his mother.

I enjoy that there isn't much background music when you're on the campaign map, just some vague horns and other sounds. I can't honestly remember much about the battlefield map music.

>>
>>51901395
I recall that metal, unless it has been previously enchanted, messes up with the flow of the winds of magic, making it too risky to wear, so wizards are restricted to wearing robes or pricey magic armors

Exceptions being Vampires, who are inherently magical beings and as such, can wear mundane armor and cast spells, and Chaos sorcerers, whose armor is made with magic as one of it's components (and possibly dwarf runic armor, but stunties can't into magic)
>>
>>51901860
No

Then again, humanity has never had to face giants, so they may be a reasonably useful weapon, of course, not with a shield, that's for sure, no way to swing a halberd with one hand

On a google search, apparently the Chinese used a couple different kinds of polearms from horseback, with blades and spikes, or even flails - they weren't technically halberds, but could be used in a similar manner.

They might just be used in Warhammer with Demigryphs because they're so fucking huge, and wouldn't make use of cavalry charges like more traditional horses.
>>
>>51891906
I have accepted the Geheimnisnacht Mod scenario as my headcanon where the majority of norscan tribes are not ravening chaos cultists but just follow the old gods pantheon and raid the south for Loot, not because "the dark gods demand it hurr durr".

Also I like the plethora of tribes, religious cults and infighting that's present in ck2s mod, gives Norsca a soul, unlike TW WHs version. it also does the Chaos Tribes in the wastes very well, it's more fitting for them to be infighting nomads and short lived, unstable warbands.

>>
>>51895957

I tend to keep them pretty basic since Empire characters are more support characters. Generally a shield, heavy armour and a great weapon since he'll probably be striking last anyway. That's it. I only run a captain as a BSB though. In that role he gets cloak of Ulric every time.
>>
>>51905026
Fun thing I noticed with regards to the chaos tribes:
The Gospodar migration only happened in 1503. They're said to have entered Kislev through High Pass.

There's nothing across High Pass. Just Zorn Uzkul and more mountains. The only place they could have come from is the chaos wastes north of the Mountains of Mourn.
I quite like the theory that the Gospodars were originally a steppe tribe forced south and west by the growing shadow of chaos. That'd mean that the modern chaos tribes are like the Gospodars except that they decided to stay put instead of flee.

Well it isn't 'grimdark' (I find the whole idea that this is a genera completely silly) but I was more responding to the idea that it's like WoW or other Tolkienesque fantasies. Really, Warhammer was a synthesis of Moorcock and Tolkien. Using the tone of the former and the framework of the latter.

No.
They fit well. There's probably more Ogres in the Empire than there are Elves. They fit a different niche to the other races.

But they're also huge. If they're statted like the Ogres in the bestiary, they should completely dominate combat encounters. They eat vast amounts of food. They can't fit into most houses. And good luck being sneaky or trying to investigate anything subtly.

You really need to have written a campaign specifically to accommodate them. Which tells me that they shouldn't be a standard race.

It's hard to say, since I don't think it's ever explained in the lore officially.

I know that Total War shared a few Bretonnian stories, and one of them pointed to Laundin being jealous and bitter and delving into dark magics. But I'm not sure I can trust that, since it wasn't mentioned before CA at all.
>>
>>51909081
>>51906879

It's a comedy series, and it's very clear that they are playing houserules at times (letting things fly etc.). However it's also the best thing involving Warhammer at the moment, considering AoS and 40k being so boring.

>I know that Total War shared a few Bretonnian stories, and one of them pointed to Laundin being jealous and bitter and delving into dark magics. But I'm not sure I can trust that, since it wasn't mentioned before CA at all.

In the army book, Mousillon was basically always somewhat corrupted, and Laundin was just an interruption to it.
>>
>>51915825
In Knights of the Grail, it says that Mousillon was "always troubled by the undead," (probably a natural dhar trap), but whatever went wrong with it went wrong AFTER Landuin died, and there have been attempts before and since to prevent and reverse it.

Why is necromancy set up as being in such opposition to Chaos? I like it, it's cool to have more than one 'bad guy' faction and have them fighting with each other, but Chaos seems like it'd work well with Necromancy, and all magic comes from Chaos anyway.

I wish I was any good as CK2, it sounds like it would be a fun mod to play.

On a Total Warhammer note, did Karak Ziflin exist before the game? It's farther north in the Grey Mountains than Karak Norn, which in all the maps I had seen had absolutely no dwarven holds.
>>
>>51916919
I think it's basically just a mining outpost mentioned somewhere, not large enough to even be considered a county.
>>
>>51916796
I guess it falls into the trope that Vampires work for themselves and only for themselves, refusing to work for anyone else, worshipping anyone else (which means no chaos) and being the ambitious bastards they are, always manipulating everyone else.

Which is why they oppose basically everyone.
>>
>>51916796
Because Chaos is born from the emotions and the souls of living sapient beings. Undead doesn't feed Chaos. Most of the top tier necromancers and vampires want to rule the world with mostly, if not all, undead subjects. If someone like Nagash wins then the entire world would be undead and the Chaos Gods would starve, or atleast be really mad that they can't play in this world anymore.

Undead are supposed to be "Evil Order" in contrast to the "Chaotic Evil" of Chaos.

Necromancy and the undead represent pure, utter stasis. Nothing grows, nothing changes, everything simply continues to exist trapped at the moment it was reanimated. Chaos just has very little to offer to Vampires, they have eternal life, they have incredible physical strength without the threat of turning into a spawn at any moment unlike WoCs. And nurgle is basically straight up opposed to their very existance. Living Dead is somethin else than life from death mind you.

Similar how the Elves are quite resistant to chaos as they don't really need anything chaos can offer mortals. Only really slaanesh can get a hold of some and even those he has to share.

There's also the part where necromancers and vamps basically consider themselves gods, so there's that.
>>
>>51918808
Why don't Tomb Kings give themselves up to Chaos, then? I know they're far away from it, but they're not in the state of undeath that they want to be, and I could understand them bargaining with Chaos to return some of their past glories, or to make their undead bodies more appealing, or to learn the secrets of undeath that will better preserve their decay.

I've played both, and both have their flaws. The glaring flaws in the Medieval mod is that it still uses the old engine, which is clunky and full of bugs. The battles in Total Warhammer are much more energetic in my opinion, and in the end, Warhammer is all about the battles.

Once all three games are released I expect Warhammer to outshine BotET greatly, since all races will be finished.

Maybe I'm just a shitty player, but I feel like in Total Warhammer I'm just bashing armies together rather than getting a chance to use much strategy. Maybe because it's harder to get a sense of my units strengths and weaknesses, or the in-depth stats that I know they have. Maybe I'm too used to getting to sit back and wait on the defensive.

One thing I will say is that things like cannons and trebuchets feel fantastic, and there are some interesting mechanics that show CA can go beyond just historical stuff. I'm not good with the morale system, but it feels better than it did in Medieval 2 in a lot of ways, though it perplexes me how sometimes units will randomly break when they're far from the fighting. Magic adds some wonderful twists to battles, and the constant variety of enemies keeps things from getting boring. I also love the diplomacy, and how you're not more or less set in existing alliances like Empire, or have some factions going to war with you almost immediately like in Med 2.

I personally don't like how each city automatically has garrisoned armies, because oftentimes that will mean that I'm just gathering together a larger army so I can wait out an encirclement. But I can see why people would like that, and I like how waiting the enemy out now feels like a viable tactic.

You need foley, baggy clothes to feel the flow of the winds of magic, unless that magic is welling up from within like a vampire or your sculpting the magic with your sky daddies help (chaos, various non chaotic priests)

Hey, whats up guys? So, I wanted to get some opinions on this conversion I've been working on. Pic related, its going to be a mortis Engine once I finish the reliquary, Necromancer and Banshees. Im also gonna work on some more highlighting for the Engine part as well.
>>
>>51923732

Is that one of them lizard dinos?
>>
>>51914284
In the 6th edition book it mentions that the slums and overcrowding made the city especially susceptible to plague and Vampire Count/Skaven schemes. Not 100% sure how Landuin is connected but i like the ambiguity.
>>
>>51924286
There's a story, can't remember where it was from, that describes a scholar postulating that Landuin was so perfect that he literally sucked the goodness out of his surroundings, which left Mousillon with nothing when he died.
>>
>>51924236
Yep. Although I suppose its more a zombie dino at this point.
>>
>>51905299
In a interview with the designer he said that the idea was corrupted slann (the old edition ones) that went to the Chaos Wastelands to hide underground. Although it didnt quite catch on
>>
How deadly is the Wild Hunt? How much does it destroy, or how far afield can it go from Athel Loren?

Why are Wood Elves such rape in Total Warhammer?
>>
>>51925130
It tends to stay somewhat close to Athel Loren and just about anything caught in its path are usually destroyed, either a simple hamlet or even a lord's castle.
>>
>>51924967

I suppose they could be one in the same.

>>51923732

That's a really well executed conversion, I like the corpse cart sides you've used to make the harness for the dinosaur.

Is there any background on this? Is this like an undead Amazonian army or something?
>>
>>51925261
Sort of. Im working on the background as I go, since im more a hobbyist, and I've only recently gotten into WHFB. But the general idea behind my army at the moment is based around Black Magister, formally of the Amythest Order, who has fled to Lustria, in order to escape the retribution of the College. Thus, although trained in the art of harnessing the winds of Shyish, she has little to no knowledge on the more introcate aspects of Dhar and Necromancy. As such, she has been having to improvise and experiment. The Mortis Engine, or as I've been calling it, the Mortisaur, is one of her more successful experiments, due to its reliquary being stuffed with Lizardmen artifacts, rather than a Necromancrs bones, thus keeping the Dinosaur animated.

Although the Black Magister herself is more gothic in style, the rest of the army is going to be more Aztec in theme, to represent her ongoing research and plundering.
>>
>>51925421

Wow that's such a great theme. I wish Tomb Guard were still around, their head dresses looked Aztec. There's so much potential for undead dinosaurs riding black knights, pterodactyls for fell bats etc.

Nuln plot hooks/ideas?
>>
>>51926220
The Gunnery School is having a parade to show off its newest guns, but something goes terribly wrong and one of the machines explodes. After some investigation it is revealed that the machine was tampered with, as no engineer worth their salt would have made such a grievous error. Strangely, there is some kind of green dust among the wreckage.
>>
>>51926247
Skaven trickery?
>>
>>51926278
It could be a red herring, with the real culprit being a member of the Engineers Guild of Altdorf. The Gunnery School is Nuln's pride and joy, so seeing it embarrassed would be a hit against Nuln's prestige as a city.

Growing trade with norsca would increase number of norse mercenaries in empire, maybe growing interest in their art among nobility. But it would also lead to more conflicts in norsca itself, isolationist shamanist factions would have try to cut-off the trade. It gives many fabular options.

2nd Ed. Roleplay
Mordheim: City of the Damned

You don't need anything else from Warhammer as far as the tabletop goes.

Nightmare ideas for a wizard apprentice that got in the way of black magister dabbling in necromancy?
>>
>>51927189
7th edition core rules were a great iteration on 6th ed in my opinion. It's a pity that the armybooks for several factions were so op in 7th however.

For me, peak WFB is 7th edition rulebook, 6th edition army books.
2nd edition roleplay and Mordheim are definitley peak picks.
>>
>>51927091
Yeah, I always thought the fact that Sylvanias consider the Carsteins as their Counts was cool. The fact that they're, maybe, just as bad as your regular lord of the Empire, albeit for different reasons, so your regular peasants are like "well yeah the counts men come for the blood tax, but at least they keep the Beastmen and bloody Sigmarites out."

I'm guess I'm still enamoured with the idea of the Carsteins acting like actual Imperial nobility, even though they're undead monsters. If you've got a claim on the Imperial Throne, might as well act like it.
>>
>>51925421
>>51925558
Seconding this, you can also include the existing lore from the Vampire Coast (a part of the lustrian coast controlled by at least one vampire and hordes of dead pirates). It's very canon. It even used to have rules for it in a white dwarf in 2005. I probably still have that WD

Attila was staggering and is staggering at large scale battles. Lords will just pick a place on the ground and punch it, so there's that.

The 1 v 1 thing was a function of their battle animations (The Shogun 2 ones were honestly cool as fuck), and since those have been reduced to punching the air in warhammer it's not as big a problem.

Lords will just straight up punch the fucking air.

They still do the pirouettes looking for enemies though, but that honestly just kind of makes sense.
>>
>>51928560
It's a cool relationship to have with he Empire other than "bump in the night", at least for the VonC. Wanting to be accepted by the nobility, but unable to do so without corrupting it with their own agents. They hate and scorn the Empire, but also need it to fuel themselves and their self image. Classic vampire parasitism, really.

On the other hand, here's another idea...maybe Landuin is in some way to blame, personally. Consider Merovech for a moment; the old army books note that he was once a pretty noble figure, but that sinister advisors helped lead him into real madness and barbarity.

We know Landuin was never the same after Gilles died, and perhaps this occurrence of 'sinister' foreign advisors is older than Merovech. Perhaps someone gave Landuin the idea to try and create an artifact that would be powerful enough to bring Gilles back. Perhaps it was even the Bloody Grail, now slowly sucking the life out of Mousillon to feed its own abominable thirst. I mean, Landuin, Maldred, and Malfleur all died mysteriously in the ducal palace of either no apparent injury or mysterious wasting.

I was actually thinking of picking up some Conquistadors from brother Vinni, to either spruce up as undead, or use as soldiers that helped the Black Magister escape from the Old World. They make some really, really good spanish soldiery, and I definetly plan on picking up their duelist mini.

But, im still trying to think up a back story for my Black Magister, and her reason for falling from the order. Some thoughts I had include her acidentally animating the dead mid-battle, in order to turn the tide of a battle against some foe, or in order to accomplish some great feat. Im also debating on her reaction to her own falling.

>>51927622
After doing a bit of reading about the Vampire Coast, im not sure about how well she would take to it. On one hand, its relatively safe place for those fleeing the Empire and Colleges, as nobody would be willing to come near it. On the other though, setting up shop in the coast means servinf the reiging count there, and the Magister would be well aware of the dangers and restrictions a Vampire lord would apply.

I was personally thinking about her establishing herself in the ruins of a Temple city destroyed by the Norse. Gives her access to plenty of bodies, has little presence of other factions, and it allows her to study the Lizard Men's runes and knowledge without too much intrusion.

I really want to work in Amazons at some point, as well as undead Lizardmen themselves, but at the moment, Im trying to come up with conversion ideas them selves.

"Well-intentioned extremist" will get you more mileage, I think, than "complete accident." I'm not even sure you'd be expelled for your theoretical mishap. Certainly interrogated and placed under observation, probably punished for risking the College.

The PCs are (long term) on the tail of a black magister in my own game. He was a life lore wizard, who delved into chaos lores in an attempt to understand and counter the effects of crop blights. It looked like he'd pulled it off, too...until people who ate of that particular bumper crop started literally rotting from the inside out. He turned himself over, absolutely horrified at what he'd done, but when senior magisters started talking about Pacification, fled for parts foreign.
