Well they are gods so there is that excuse for their looks. It does give them kind of a weird quality, but not enough for my taste.

Maybe they will be shown to be more fantastical/mythical in other cards?

Because most people don't have different colored dice or beads on hand to represent different types of counters. So let's say you see a 4/4 on the table on the table with three counters on it -- is it a 1/1 or 7/7? What if there are other type of counters as well, such as charge counters or feather counters? What if there are several different creatures with different counters on them?
