I'm starting to consider getting a unit of double hammer liberators

Because reasons
>>

I approve of your idea, anon. Why settle for smiting one heretic at a time when you can smite TWO?

>>
>>51831853
Building a freeguild army right now and I guess you could use them for moving quickly across the board to seize objectives.

I am so salty the only freeguild battalion requires literally every unit in their list because I want to run an army that's pure handgunners, swordsmen and greatswords with knight and arty support

>Tfw keeping the Empire pure by purging Stormcast mutants
>>
>>51831966
They look cool, but to be honest, liberators really aren't good for anything but soaking charges and tarpitting, even with double hammers. Shields make them better at their battlefield role.

At least that's been my experience
>>
>>51832261
But the battalion is worth it. Freeguild looks shit when you read their warscrolls, but they shine with the battalion benefits and leader buffs.
>>
>>51832368
I know, and they're an army that rewards careful planning and synergising buffs in a way that really appeals to me, but that's kinda what I mean. You used to get pretty much the same benefits from the State Troop Detachment in the empire legacy list, if I recall correctly. That only required you to take infantry, with pistoliers and outriders as an optional elite slot.
>>
>>51831966
I've actually been considering the same.
Well, strictly speaking I am considering a unit of five Liberators with dual hatchets I have left over from my Hunters. That'd give me a third unit of Liberators for battalion purposes in addition to the 10 sword/shield and 10 hammer/shield Liberators I already own.

My hinterlands warband is called Scyish Hunting Party, and it's a beastmen warband.
The beastlord leading the warband died early on, making a Bestigor "Scyish" the new leader. Besides him, there are 3 other bestigors, 6 Gors and a single Ungor raider.
>>
>>51833178
Or you could just add it to the frigging' resources page.

I just played one today. I had:
1 Rotbringer sorcerer
1 Putrid blightking
3 chaos warriors with Mark of Nurgle, swords and shields, one Hornblower
1 chaos marauder with Mark of Nurgle, axe and shield

My opponent had mixed destruction. An ogor and some greenskins

The game was great fun. Very quick and exciting. However he got more tokens because the destruction battle trait is way overpowered. It never says you can't get that free move and your regular move with your run, so he was zipping around the table and getting half the tokens off before I could even charge anything

I really like it, but the battle traits need to be altered. The chaos one is garbage (dealing 1 mw to yourself is a huge fucking deal at this scale, and it can only be used on a hero, not even your general), the destruction one is really too good (on our second game we ruled out only provides a D3" move). The order one seems reasonable, but I haven't played with the death one

>>

More like the Stormcasts are their bitches because they're the people who Sigmar forged them to fight and die for.

The Freeguilds are the armies of the free peoples of humanity who take up arms without the boons and blessings of a god and take the fight to Chaos with faith, steel and gunpowder.

Pretty fucking dope if you ask me.
>>
>>51833663
So are they going to re-release empire as free peoples?
>>
>>51833703
Technically they haven't re-released shit, they're still selling a bunch of old Empire stuff under the Freeguild name on the website.

I'm hoping we'll get new models and box sets eventually though, even if it means stepping away from the OG renaissance aesthetic I love so much. The fact that the Disciples of Tzeentch releases and tie-in literature have spent some time fleshing out the free cities of Order suggests we might be in luck.
>>
>>51833718
Yeah I noticed the issue im having is that 3rd party shops don't sell the freeguild stuff.
>>
>>51833754
My FLGS has some Empire stuff and it's not even old stock because they only opened last year. Comparatively when I've asked in my local GW they've tended to tell me that it's website-only stuff. Guess it just depends where you're at.

Honestly pal you're at no disadvantage if your LGS doesn't sell them, you can probably make killer savings online. I just try and get my models from my local joint where possible on principle because I want to support it.

Statistics provided by anons are always by their definition not reliable. It's not about proving that they are unreliable, it's about proving they are reliable in the first place.

>Are those elves all painted?

>the mini-factions are traps don't stick to either unless you want to lose every game you play. It's not all about winning but its also not fun to never even have a chance.

I'd love to combine Privateers with Order Serpentis, but alas corsairs are not battle line... A lot of the issues with the mini-factions would be fixed if more units were normal battleline. Basically, any unit that was a core unit in WHFB should be a battle line unit in AoS (more or less) in my opinion.

>1 dark elf lord on dragon
Am I the only one who really hates that model? The rider is unimpressive hiding behind the neck, the head of the dragon is too big, the wings are placed in a wrong position, basically the only thing I did like is the how snakelike it is...

>Are those elves all painted?

>fixed if more units were normal battleline
since the mini-factions of elves are (typically) three units they also have a problem with being totally strategically inflexible. Three units don't make a well rounded force able to cover the bases needed to be even remotely competitive.

>Am I the only one who really hates that model?

It looks the same as the high elf lord on dragon only in a different pose. I like it just fine. You do have a point about the rider being oddly behind the neck though.

If we can take from this to mean that they intend to do a release of elves expanding on the scourge privateers min-faction then I have the following thoughts on the subject.

Dark elf players who played the pirate themed armies were a very small subset of population.

People who play elf armies > people who play dark elf armies > people who play pirate dark elf armies.

This release is unlikely to appeal to the 80% (estimating) of people who played / play elf armies.

If I am right (I might be wrong but its just my thoughts) then the sales for the release won't be as good as something like a Realm of Light Elves release with Tyrion and Teclis or Malekith and the Realm of Shadow elves.

I worry that they will do this mini-faction release and see poor sales numbers and interpret that as a lack of interest in the concept of elf releases.
>>
>>51835410
one of the recent books talked about giant crabs that the privateers ride around in like ships, but also use in battle
>>
>>51835311
Am I the only one who hates that it's played with a GM? If I wanted to play D&D, I'd play D&D. Now of course, if this is the build up to a proper RPG then I'm fine with it.

>>51835228
Atm best option for Elves is just running Swifthawk agents with the Battallion from Spire of Dawn. Should give you a decently diverse force.
>>
>>51835410
considering we got both Ironjawz and Bonesplitterz as individual Greenskins armies, I don't see why they'd limit themselves to just releasing one army of Elves when it's already well established with the playerbase that there are multiple Elven armies.
>>
>>51835410
You are most likely right in the pirate aspect of dark elves being the less popular aspect. But i'll be damned if that wasn't what made me play them in 7th when the corsairs got new models, and i'll be damned if it wont make me play them again if they get AoS'd to actually have some options.
>>
>>51835410
Or they do a Disciples of Tzeentch style book which includes several factions. Battletome: Spooky Aelves, which includes all the old Dark Elves + New stuff. It's wishlisting, but who knows.

>>51835450
Honestly, the biggest thing the scourgewater privateers miss atm is a magic user with their keyword. Would help a lot. And of course the Fleetmaster is underwhelming but a 120 pt magic user would really round up the faction.
>>
>>51835437
>Atm best option for Elves is just running Swifthawk agents with the Battallion from Spire of Dawn. Should give you a decently diverse force.

I actually disagree with this and recommend going back to the original compendium warscrolls for the elves and ignoring everything since then. That gives you complete armies with synergies intact and some decent tools to play. However it still wont win you games reliably. The thing to do is to cherry pick the good things from the three flavors of elves and roll them into a force on the table. I won't tell you exactly what shape it should take but there is at least one good option I figured out.

Just to restate: I believe the spire of dawn battalion is bad. At best a 6/10.
>>
>>51835471
Why is it bad? It gives you access to a magic user and his troops without break allegiance. And the pt cost is trivial anyways. And the benefit is quite decent to be honest.
>>
>>51835437

Actually you can play without the GM, you can use the ai tables.
>>
>>51835495
Oh really, that's great, options are always good
>>
I'm kind of new to wargaming, and watching a battlerep of w40k now. They have a deck of objectives that they draw from, and that sounds like fun. Is that a core part of the game, or is that something extra that you buy? And can this be adapted to AoS?
>>
>>51835484
>Why is it bad?
well for starters the prince on griffon is a limp noodle with a sports car price tag. He just cant stand up to anything of an equal points value and is really only good for picking off things like war machine crews and wizards on foot left in the open.

The Lotheren Sea guard (spire guard) are very steeply over-costed too for what damage they can soak and what damage they can put out compared to things like Darkshards and Dreadspears.

Sure swordmasters are okay but they so only have one wound and not so hot survivability for their points cost.

The reavers are a somewhat bright spot with their blinding speed but they also suffer from the hits like a wet noodle problem.

The archmage is an embaressment for his points cost. He is the same cost as the Gaunt summoner but only gets to cast unbind 1 and has a worse spell(my opinion).

The whole problem with the army boils down to the fact that it is made up of units that are just plain over-points-costed compared to the new releases like fyreslayers/stormbros/tzeentch/sylvaneth/beastclaw/ironjaws/bonespittes/gouls/lizardmen

The army does have good things going for it though, those being: Great aesthetic and a very unified looking force.

So if you really only care about playing fluffy games and you really don't mind that you won't be winning many if any games then I say go for it.

Winning isn't the most important thing about the game.

Archmages spell goes from meh to amazing once you realize you can put it on artillery

But if you want to play high elves, hope you like Phoenix guard
>>
>>51835559
Yes, it can be adapted to AoS. No it's not part of the game, instead AoS has a shit ton of different objective games. I don't think the card system will be implemented anytime soon, if at all.
>>
>>51835887

AND by archmage I meant loremaster.
>>
>>51835887
>Archmages spell goes from meh to amazing once you realize you can put it on artillery

youre thinking of the loremaster not the archmage. The loremaster is amazing but better than casting hand of glory on a bolt thrower its actually better on something like the dark elf lord on dragon (the high elf lord on dragon provides his own psudo hand of glory to himself).

The archmage provides a 6+ ward bubble. people will argue that it is worth the points but it is my opinion that it really isn't enough.
>>
>>51835983

It's a further 16.67% chance to save on Phoenix guard which just pushes their skew even further, so it has some applicability.

Death players seem to love their 6+ FnP equivalent so it may have merit.

>Spire Guard are steeply over-costed
Isn't that a bit of an exaggeration? 20 pts more than Dreadspears which is not that much considering the benefits the Spireguard get.

>The Reavers are a somewhat bright spot with their blinding speed but they also suffer from the hits like a wet noodle problem.
What is your definition for not hitting like a wet noodle? they have plenty of ranged attacks, I mean if everything that is not mortal wounds or -2 rend is a wet noodle than this game is already heading for WHFB levels of no-fun...

>So if you really only care about playing fluffy games and you really don't mind that you won't be winning many if any games then I say go for it. Winning isn't the most important thing about the game.
This was exactly the attitude in the WHFB community. You like unit X? Oh, it's shit, but have fun with it. And at the end of the edition, we had about 5 viable factions each containing 3 units that were useful according to the internet. Often, hardly based on actual playing but it became a self-fulfilling prophecy.
>>
>>51831882
Never. As you said what's the point?

And what's the appeal?

Want tough armored Orcs / Big evil Wyverns? Ironjawz are perfect, amazing models too.

Want less armored savage classical Orcs? with wizards? and squig elements? and bowmen? and boar-boyz? Bonesplitterz. Decent models there.

Want....Shitty artillery units?
Terrible Goblin/Wolf models?
River trolls?
...Really?
Greenskinz it is.

Expect Spiderfang or Moonclan as they need to give Gobbo players something next
>>
>>51836128
>20 pts more than Dreadspears

dreadspears are 80pts for 10 modles

>not hitting like a wet noodle?
well they have average to hit and towound and no rend and mono damage profiles. They really aren't intimidating and with poor saves they evaporate almost instantly when actually touched by anything.

It's not that they are bad in and of themselves, its that the points you have to pay to put them on the table is hard to justify outside edge cases and possibly objective grabbing.

>WHFB levels of no-fun
I don't entirely disagree. I do hope (really hope) that the GW people pull their heads out their asses and balance the points properly so we can have every faction be at least passingly viable.

Oh right, made that mistake since Darkshards and Bleakswords are 100, with the Spireguard you get 2 for 1 though and they do look quite resilient when it comes to battle shock. And if you use the whole Spire of Dawn battalion you get a big pile of shooting, it might not be super lethal, but quantity counts for something imo.

>I don't entirely disagree. I do hope (really hope) that the GW people pull their heads out their asses and balance the points properly so we can have every faction be at least passingly viable.
It will be impossible for GW to balance it to the degree that all units will be viable. Look at WoW. They are now at the point where almost every spec and class can compete at serious levels and yet the community still condemns some specs to 'dogshit' levels due to some bounded accuracy bullshit.

After years of using the Warmahorde equivalent, and never actually being a AoS fan (mostly due to old grudge over my WHFB days), even a guy like me can admit when I see something pretty good.
All basic rules are free, its easy to use and you literally just pay for what you want, no more no less. It even contains the "rule book" and a army-builder type of thing, and all I could actually ask for more is that it included a free dice roller!

So stop your whiny ass bitching and accept that you obviously are to poor to enjoy a hobby. You just wants the taste, but don't want to pay for the cream, and it is absolutely 100% because people like you who was the cause of WHFB being trashed. If you don't support the hobby, it goes away, its that simple.

the objectively superior scheme for greenskins incorporates metallic grey/browns (dark iron and bronze), brown/bone leather with mainly red decorations, yellow/gold accessories/bits and the occasional black and white checkes pattern on standards, borders of pauldrons, as bands around rods/shafts/arms etc.
magical effects must be predominantly green with bright yellow edges but turquoise smoke/trails/glow as should be the thinner flesh like skin recesses around the eyes, lips and nails.
inner flesh (inside the mouth) has to be a purple washed version of the skin colour.
blue will feature mainly as metallic oxydation, occasional scaly hides and sparse dots in the magic smoke.

remember to use the non-neutral colours for warpaints.

Has it glanced your mind that it might be an ironic statement with the purpose of attracting attention and discussion?

it is also funded on the idea that a neutral background colour with a primary warm colour on the complementary side of the already established green skin of the orcs offers the better contrast to the eye

the secondary colours listed are either cold or already connected to the palette in play with the intention of breaking monotony without hampering the initial intention of counterbalancing green with red

Knight-Questor Ascus Summergale and his merry band of Hunters.
From left to right:
- Morus Cloudcutter, a very aggressive and vengeful former Outrider for the Freeguilds in the wilds of the Ghurlands
- Ara Mistveil, who spent her life harrying a Bloodbound warband that had ravaged her Aqshian city before succumbing to age and injuries
- Falmorus Welkintread, artillery observer that died delaying a pack of fleshhounds threatening to overrun a key defensive position at Phoenicium
- Ascus Summergale, for whom very little has changed since being reforged, as he was a knight traveling the realms righting wrongs and protecting the innocent even before that

Not particularily inspired, admittedly, but I just threw it together in a hurry.

they are monetising change whenever possible, do you think they came up with the course of the realmgate wars midway during the release of the starter box? they clearly had already planned the plot course but instead of presenting the setting already with the advancement and exploring the events backwards they are selling piece after piece in an episodic manner.

the same I think is happening with the elves and slaanesh, they already planned what tyrion teclis, malerion and morathi are up to, they already "did just do that" and decide that the elves will kill/eat/use slaanesh and seize the soon to be vacant spot in the pantheon.
not to make the setting kid friendly but to sell: because almost nekkid elves sell while rape daemons don't, comparatively.

it will just end with slaanesh never getting a proper greater daemon, new daemonic releases or the same recognition as part of chaos as nurgle, khorne and tzeentch.

aos apologists will use the same rethoric they've been repeating so far to defend the "update" as the best possible situation; oldfags will whine about the change being a practical "replacement" and a butchering of thematics; while GW will succeed at making some money disregarding whether there was a better way to it.

How am I the one not making sense when you're the one presuming for no reason that the end times was the only possible moment to kill slaanesh?
we have episodic advancements, summer events and yearly representations of the setting, why is it to consider impossible, not even unlikely, for the elven releases to pick up from the narrative of the missing slaanesh and bring new purpose to the slaaneshi model range?
>>
>>51840076
>How am I the one not making sense when you're the one presuming for no reason that the end times was the only possible moment to kill slaanesh?

It was the moment to kill Slaanesh. They decided instead that he would be missing.
Missing never means dead in fiction.
He'll be back, maybe changed in some manner, but not dead else they would have just cut that thread already.

I'm sure no one will agree with this but the super dynamic poses seem somewhat unbelievable for men wearing head to toe plate armor like that. Maybe they are such Demi-gods of superhuman strength that they pull that kind of acrobatics/weight lifting off without an issue.

Either way, looks very cool.

Always, anon. You may have drawn that conclusion, but Skaven were never directly tied into Chaos in Fantasy. They never even had a clearly defined origin, just a self-contained fable concerning a city pretty much unrelated to everyone else.

As AoS fleshes out, it needs more alcoves in that vein. The Flesheater Courts are an excellent start.

I do think there is potential in Chaos Skaven though. The idea of swarms and swarms of ratmen tunnelling through reality to appear anywhere has potential.

Hey, me and my mate haven't played since end times. We were going to try age of sigmar tomorrow, and I'm just curious if we're in a position with a predictable result: I play moonclan goblins, and he I think is using his slaanesh daemons.
>>
>>51843079
Not necessarily. His army has the speed and yours has the numbers. It really will be up to the scenario you play whichever has the advantage. Make sure you are playing with points and using the GHB scenarios. They are objective based and favor smart maneuvering and smart players. Most of all, just have fun with it.
>>
>>51842296
>>
>>51843079
Moonclan can do a lot of denial, which tends to fuck over Slaanesh hard, but overall the two forces are of roughly equal standing, I'd say.

What's the best Start Collecting set for AoS ? How do they compare to the value of Starter Set?

>>
So do horses not exist anymore in AoS?
>>
>>51844205
Well the starter is really only good if you want to collect khorne. A very melee focused list that excels with hero buffing units.

Id say first thing should be the khorne half of the starter set. Try to split with someone. That gives you a good basis for your force with bloodreavers and 3 good hero characters. Then get the start collecting khorne bloodbound for more good stuff.

That right htere is a very solid start for chaos.

>>
>>51844485
I wouldn't know, only played one game of fantasy.
>>
>>51844485
Yeah it was faster, but also it was not as dynamic.

When you watch a movie with a fantasy or historical battle, when the 2 armies clash, they smash into each other, they pile around each other. They mix in with each other. They get pushed back, they push forward. You get a sense of this in a battle of AoS. Not in whfb when 2 blocks meet, then one disappears, then the block moves again.

you can vary the base color by adding a tiny dot of red, yellow or blue to a few of the little buggers. Now you will have a majority of green´ish nurglings, but some will stand out as leaning a bit more to the red/yellow/blue direction.

Its all about picking out those details and making the viewer notice them. People will see that you put some extra effort in to those models, when you could have just left them all green.

tomb kings
>>
So, thinking of a narrative campaign here with 3 players vs. a GM, with each player controlling a warband (mainly stormcast, because that's the army I got): liberators, retributors and judicators. Might use hinterlands rules for the growth.

The SC guys are painted in hallowed knights scheme, and the baddies they're going against are mainly nurgle (I have the start collecting set, and an extra box of blightkings).

So the question is, any thoughts of the actual terrain itself, as in which realm or story I should be basing the narrative play on? Fighting their way to find Alarielle who's all coked up on depression meds?

it's not the normies who are flocking it's the warhammer fans that were waiting for an update to jump in.
>why did they jump in?
because it is an update and addressed or is addressing the previous turn off's: the amount of miniatures needed for a start, the lack of support for the balance.
>>
>>51847378
>the amount of miniatures needed for a start

it seems like the start up cost for AoS is nearly identical to fantasy honestly
>>
>>51847353
see if you can pick up old Warhammer army books for Empire and Bretonnians, you've got a good chance of finding them used for cheap.

aside from unit rules and stats, the army books mostly contain really good lore to get to know the armies, and have some of the greatest artwork.

after that you can just google book recommendations relating to whatever you want to read. Fantasy was around for decades, so there is absolutely tons of content out there. Generally though, novels tend to relate more to one character or group of character's individual stories within the world rather than giving a broad history of events. Like in the Gotrek and Felix novels they pass through all sorts of different's parts of the world and sort of give an impression of it all from the perspective of a human and a dwarf.
>>
>>51847353
Age of sigmar is set some vague hundreds of years after the apocalypse of the old world where the winds of magic formed literal magical realms were totally similar factions of the old world and some gods just happen to live in.

I'm not sure if you're the same anon that popped up in the warhammer fantasy thread some time ago, but there's no real canonical order to read the fluff as much of it is self contained and doesn't follow a story, for the books that do follow a story (like the end times, the nagash trilogy, archaon etc) just read each book of a series in its publication order.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Warhammer_Fantasy_novels

don't worry about /aos/, they don't know how to recognise bait and are very defensive.
>>
>>51847403
>it seems like the start up cost for AoS is nearly identical to fantasy honestly
except it isn't?

I've seen the starter box for as cheap as 75 dollars, and if you can get that and a Start Collecting! box (assuming you intend to play SCE or KBB) you will have well over 1000 points already, for less than 150 bucks. Even less if you split the starter with someone else.
>>
>>51847403
that's because the miniatures are generally bigger and pricier now.
but with stuff like starting boxes you get to save on the price of the common infantry while using the dosh you wanted to use on the big kits.
>>
>>51847403
you don't have to buy the expensive fucking giant rulebook tome this time though.

you and a friend can literally just buy a couple units, or the start collecting box sets, some glue, an undercoat spray bottle, and assemble and undercoat them in a day ready to go to battle with 4 pages of free rules and free warscrolls all online.

it's such a massive difference, and the only reason I decided to come back into wargaming after last playing Fantasy back in like 2010

Everything coming out now, at least follows the 40k model of "what comes in this box is generally all you need to use this for a viable unit." Mostly.
