OP here.

Should I start age of sigmar? I have lots of old warhammer minis/armies

Is the starter set worth it?

I also have a bunch of mantic undead I want to turn into a undead force (40 skellies 20 graveguard 10 mummies and 20 ghouls 20 zombones)

Is AOS community more open to using alternative models?
>>
Does the Skeleton Horde box come with all Mortarch variants, or just Arkhan the Black?
>>
>>51774455
All variants as far as my research goes.

Same for other boxes I think the ghoul court can also make vampire lord.

>Should I start age of sigmar?
Is it played where you are? If so, are the people who play cool guys? If not, then you should probably find out what is played.
>I have lots of old warhammer minis/armies
Which is cool because you can play them in AoS
>Is the starter set worth it?
Only if you're interested in collecting Stormcast Eternals or Khorne Bloodbound
>I also have a bunch of mantic undead I want to turn into a undead force (40 skellies 20 graveguard 10 mummies and 20 ghouls 20 zombones)
Which is a great basis for a Death army.
>Is AOS community more open to using alternative models?
Yes. However if you plan on playing in a GW store, or at an official GW event, then they will ask you not to play with them generally.

Thanks for making the thread, btw.

My Harbinger of Decay. This is Gagnus the Ratcatcher on his Gluttdragon. Gagnus was a Nurgle lord who displeased his god in a defeat (to Stormcast Eternals no less), and as punishment his quest it to collect rat corpses (particularly Skaven) for Grandfather Nurgle to use in his garden, to pack around trees for fertilizer. A humiliating punishment for what was once a great Lord of Chaos.

The Gluttdragon is a Dracoth that has been stricken with a disease that turns it into a creature of insatiable hunger. It mutates this child of Dracothion into a mockery of its former self. No better mount for a Lord of Nurgle.
>>
>>51774637
I like the models for both forces.

Would you say they would make a good basis for a demo force to try the game with friends?

Does it have a rulesbook and stuff too or terrain?
>>
>>51774655
With lots of forests they teleport everwhere and are pretty competitive. A solid army.

REally nice conversion, especially the sculpting. My only critique is the two sacks on his neck kind of block off the rest of the model.

Get Wyldwoods. Read the book again, find a Wargrove you like and get ready to curb stomp some dudes. Lots of flexibility.

Personally I went Gnarlroot with the option to switch to Harvestboon or Ironbark.

I haven't played Warhammer/40k in about 15 years.

AoS seems interesting. So I want to get into it.

How do I start exactly? Do I buy the starter set and select one of the two factions in the starter set as my army?

The space marines(Sorry) look like fun.

Thank you.
>>
>>51775012
Read the rules first. They're free and only four pages. Then work from there.
Generally one of the two base games or a Start Collecting box are a perfect start.

Its fun, trust me. If you are in it for competitive gameplay, or smashing your opponent on T2, or trying to rule lawyering yourself out of situations, go play something else. This game is just fun to be frank. It has more tactical depth than most people would like to recognize, but its mainly here for the miniatures, and cool scenarios. Its fast, no rule-lagging, and will make you have a great time.
I was one of the haters at first, having played WHFB for a good 15 years before. But once I got over it, and gave it a try, I realized it was damn fun.

My advice? Start with anything you find interesting in fluff and as a model. Understand that this hobby is 85% painting and modeling, and 15% games. Be cool with this, and you will have a blast, placing a fully painted army that your proud of on the field!

Thanks guys. I rather like the big chin rolls. I imagine he walks like a bulldog, with a lot of weight in the head and leaner in the back. Those big pustules represent pockets where the rats are stored after the Gluttdragon consumes them, later to be retrieved by nurgle for his garden. He still eats other things, they just get digested.

Is age of sigmar lore any good? Or should I just treat it like interdimensional fantasy warhammer?
>>
>>51774448
>Should I start age of sigmar? I have lots of old warhammer minis/armies

Considering the only investment you would probably have to make would be the Generals Handbook, you have no reason not to unless you mind dedicating some time to it. All warscrolls and rules are free so there's no reason why you can't throw together a quick list and have some fun.

>Is the starter set worth it?
Not too familiar with either Khorne or Stormcast, however the common knowledge is that the Stormcast included in it will form a good base to build towards a better list. The Khorne models...not so much. Another anon can chime in on this if they have experience as I haven't even touched SE or Khorne.

>Is AOS community more open to using alternative models?
This depends on your local meta/gaming group. Mine doesn't really give a shit about alternative models. We routinely proxy models to test and play different lists (just the other day my buddy used a bunch of proxied beastmen to play an Ironjaw list so he could see if he likes it before he buys and paints them). If your local AoS scene is mostly at GW stores you will need official GW models as the staff won't let you play with other companies models on their hallowed and blessed tables. Also, most tournaments won't allow you to use alternative models. If these aren't concerns of yours, then you should be fine.
>>
>>51775546
>Is age of sigmar lore any good?
No. We just have a very active general constantly held up since day 1 of it because we all think it's bad. [/sarcasm]
>>

You do realize that people play games for the fun. I am not trying to be insulting I am genuinly curious what the lore is like.

Very High Fantasy but not very fleshed out yet. I'd say it has potential but honestly we need time for the fluff to grow on its own. Just like Fantasy had.

It doesn't really hold up, but it's a more fertile and inexplored ground for your dudes.
>>
>>51775611
It's good. It's not whfb, but it is good. There's a lot more to it than "durr fantasy spess muhreens", it's epic in scope and centered more around gods and mortal, while still keeping a dark and grim atmosphere, although more hopeful than previous GW games.

How does the Daemon Cohort of Tzeentch work with the Generals Handbook?
As you don't add units to your army or replace anything. So if a the last model of a unit dies and you roll a 6 you can set up the exactly same unit again.

>>
>>51777731

>implying you needed to have the world end to have good guys on the offense

You kind of have to with how GW wrote Fantasy. I can only rarely think of instances where the Empire made a northern attack and likely all of those times were against Norsca and not the Chaos Wastes themselves.

The setup basically was that the Chaos Wastes exists and all the Empire, Kislev, and even Bretonnia can do is endure the raids that come from it.

Come to think of it I don't even think they had the Empire try to form colonies. I think the only human nation which attempted colonies was Estalia or Tilea trying in Lustria to parody history.

There is a lot of shit GW just sat on their ass about and I think puffing Archaon up as the end all be all was a large part of the reason.

The didn't outright kill fantasy, they created a parasitic IP born from fantasy. If they thought fantasy was a worthless IP they would have let it quietly fade into obscurity while they just swelled 40k, but instead they tried to "revitalize it" in a half living form as the dwindling sales of 8th edition were blamed on dwindling interest in the game instead of the increasingly prohibitive barrier of entry. If AoS got anything right, it was lowering the barrier to entry, because the sheer buy in price of 8th edition was what was preventing any new blood from getting into it, so all the grogs who had all the models they needed played the game, and no one else got into it so no models got bought.

They tried the FW and it only resulted in two books and so many models before getting shut down due to lack of interest.

There's no real excuse either since Tamurkhan was a perfectly fine book and had rules and models for things besides the centerpieces that some people enjoy screeching over. So the diehard people who still played 8th Edition Fantasy certainly did not put their money were their mouths were.

That has nothing to do with what I was saying. I wasn't saying it was a bad choice, I was saying we don't have evidence either way, it is you doing the assuming that the "business people" made a reasonable choice, when business people fuck up constantly
We don't KNOW that sales were actually that low. There is no evidence to support this other than assumptions. The amount of sales fantasy got was certainly higher than almost all non gw games on the market, so it's pretty silly to think that it was burning a massive hole in their pocket, the most likely scenario was that it was merely doing lackluster.
Sales being low doesn't mean people don't have a right to bitch and moan, because the people who bitch are ones with fantasy on their shelves. If the sales were low it wasn't because of fans, it was because of mismanagement of a valuable IP. So when someone says "I dont like this" saying "WELL YOU COULD HAVE BOUGHT MORE OF THE PRODUCT" is just fucking dull.

>tolkien

It was more akin to Moorcock.

Also, almost every Fantasy RPG/Wargame setting up until about a decade ago was a generic Ye Merry Olde England/Tolkien ripoff.

What was great about the old setting is that it had tons of fun stuff and interesting factions and still had enough unique and weird things to set it apart like Lizardmen, Skaven, Ogres, and the TK vs. VC rivalry.

Then you had The Empire, which itself was broken down into separate provinces, all of whom were vying for supremacy in within the empire itself.

Keep in mind that the Old World was originally conceived in the early 80's, where pretty much the only reference for high fantasy was Tolkien.

Besides, it's very difficult to find anything truly original within Fantasy outside of Gene Wolfe, who himself took heavy influence from Jack Vance.

AoS is shit because most of the factions are so vague and broad. There is no sense of unifying cultures or even proper cities/nations/homelands. All of the factions all just exist in these apparently fuckhuge realms with no sense of true lasting conflict. Factions just roll up to a Realmgate, go through it, and start beating the shit out of whatever they come across. So there is very little actual world-building or mythopoeia.
>>
>>51784087
You're comparing a setting that has 30 years to be fleshed out versus one that's belt had 2. With aos we have all these factions but they aren't developed yet, however we will get to them. There are now a few key big cities that have popped up because of oders's success in the wars and we will start seeing things about them, like books, and the next warhammer quest game gives a bunch of lore on one of the cities.

I just don't think it's fair to compare fluff magnitude between the 2 games yet.

Anons, I got a question, in matched play when Pink Horrors die, you can spit them into Blue Horrors as long as you pay the points. In this case, I pay 50 for 6 blue due to rule of under-strength units(50 for 10 blue), after that if I add 4 more blue to that unit, should I pay another 50, or not?!

My friends are alright about that, since I payed for 10 blue already. However, I would like to know anons opinion, RAW(and the intention of designer too).

RAW I think you'd technically have to pay points.

The GH wording is:

>However, in pitched battle, spells or abilities cannot increase the number of models in a unit to more than it had at the start of the battle (i.e they can replace slain models but not create new models for a unit.

Since the unit starts with <10 models, rather than placing <10 model and considering the others destroyed you would technically have to pay points.

That said, I would be perfectly fine allowing you to go up to 10 before paying and I don't know anyone who wouldn't. If you were to move the blue horrors out of range and create a further unit I would make you pay, though.

Elves are self righteous and have a sense of superiority over everything and everyone as a defining characteristic of the race. A lot of gamers relate to them and enjoy playing, painting, and collecting the elves armies. Such a shame that no elves releases yet.

How do disciples of Tzeentch play? Are they good?
>>
>>51787645
I haven't played with the beastmen or humans much, but they let Tzeentch Daemons feel like Tzeentch Daemons after being neutered by the General's Handbook. Getting the new psychic power table was huge.

The empire is more german than roman imperialism, and serves as a baseline for how awesome stormcast are.
>>
>>51787628

Why were you so hostile initially or up until recently?
>>
>>51787665
>>51787645

Speaking more directly to your question, with my admittedly limited knowledge of them, they tend to have really, really long hero phases and dish out a ton of mortal wounds, serving to be very strong against armies with high saves but not as great against armies with tons of wounds, though it's shooting tends to help with that.

That would seemingly extend to the rest, considering Skyfires kinda add to that in general. Tzaangors seem like beefy melee units that would work well in a list, and it has a lot of fun formations.

Multitudinuous Host feels really undercosted and cycling brimstones/blues/pinks with it and their splitting makes it feel like it never actually dies.
>>
>>51787603

Because my game (WFB) was dead and had, at first glance, been replaced by a cheap imitator, where special rules saying

>If you have a bigger moustache you get +1 to hit
>If you whisper to your models you can reroll your wounds
>If you say "For the Lady" in a noble voice you can reroll 1's

but it's gotten unrecognisably better.

I'll still admit I'm confused by the realms and the weird maps but the setting is still better, rules are better, the fucking community is better and the gameplay is better

This should make for a *really* fun army. Throw in the Celestant-prime to ensure most of the enemy army's multi-wound things are at least a little wounded.
>2 shot Longstrike Raptors
>outflanking 10-shot Hurricane Raptors
>deepstriking Aetherwings or Knights-Azyros providing buffs for both
>Knights-Azyros also provinding Mortal Wounds and Battleshock debuffs (lanterns)
>Lord-Aquilor and a Pallador retinue racing around, murdering big shit with a flurry of javelins and beaks
They even have all battleline concerns covered. I can't wait to give this a go.

This! People now days don't seem to understand that a hobby is a privilege, not a right. A luxury above your necessities, something that will cost money not all people can afford, no matter the interest you have. Be it expensive cars, collecting Barbie dolls or rare coins, it will cost money (and rest assured, a great deal more money than this hobby will ever cost you!).

>>
Do you all basecoat nurgle minis or just start painting over the primer?
>>
>>51789190
It's not bad but as you can see by yourself - you have to buy extra little box if you want to run this force with GHB rules. It's really good if you want to merge it with Stormcast half of Starter Set - 1000 points army ready to play. Even if you want to stay with SC! Box only for casual games it's a good pick. I mean, every start collecting box is a good pick for casual games
>>
>>51789190
To supplement the base game, which comes with three Retributors.
If you get one, get the other as well or buy the Easy to Build Retributors (also three dudes).
>>
>>51789190
Compared to the other start collecting sets, it's pretty terrible. It doesnt even give you a complete set of retributors, and everything is the starter set figures. It sucks.

If you want to start AoS, your best bet is to try getting the stormcast half of the starter box.

low model count armies usually have a strength of really kicking ass. as in each model, even the 'weaker' ones are pretty big beatsticks. However they suffer in most matched play games because the GHB scenarios are objective based, where high model count armies have an advantage.

Hammerstrike force is now 2 units of any Paladins and it still has no 9" restriction if the prosecutors are alive.

Retributorbomb is still a go. In fact, protector bombing monsters is now officially a thing.
>>
>>51791953
you can also deepstrike the prosecutors now.
>>
>>51791763

but im glad you think its decent
>>
>>51792022

A perfectly viable option if slightly risky for relying on a single 3+ roll. Put the prosecutors down at 9" from the enemy and put the Paladins 6" from the prosecutors, meaning they only need a 3+ on 2d6 to succeed on their charge.

An excellent maneuver against any army that could snipe off your prosecutors too early.

Also celestial supercharge makes protectors do D6 damage on a 5+ instead of a 6.

Contrary to pre release speculation, paladinbombs are better now than ever.
>>
>>51792119
>meaning they only need a 3+ on 2d6 to succeed on their charge.

You can put a single paladin within 6" and the rest already in combat.
>>
can elite low model count armies win matched play scenario tournament play by 'tabling' the opponent? Or do they always lose out to higher model count capping the objectives?
>>
>>51792159
Tabling is not a victory condition. You wipe out the enemy you have the remaing turns for yourself, but it doesn't guarantee victory in a lot of scenarios.
>>
>>51792159

That's been my experience with extremis chambers in tournaments: you either kill/block enough to stop them from capping or you lose on objective.

Unless said objective is "kill your opponents general" in which case a stardrake with a castellant buddy cop is about as strong of a pick as one can get.

Read the glorious victory section of the 2 pagerules, if your opponent has no models on the table you immediately claim a major victory.
