What do you think about the Great Old One patron? Have you ran one before? Does the new UA give you any ideas for playing a GOOlock?

Christ, that sounds painful. If figures were easier (and cheaper) to get a hold if, it wouldn't be much of a problem. But yeah, really takes you out of the moment went the left over french fry snake is attacking your party.
>>
>>51728078
Was DMing a game and had a DMPC for the solo player that was one. It was appealing cause her patron was the true BBEG, I didn't like the whole "true power and objectives are unknown to all" so I had it pitted against the Lady of Pain.

It was fun being a psychic murderhobo.

This I could understand to some degree. That he occasionally pokes into our reality and affects somebody.
>>
>>51728405
The cool part is that those rare individuals don't know they've been affected.
At the same, there are alien wizards and alien scientists alike who worship him.
>>
>if you die your new character starts at level 1
Is 5e actually balanced around this or is my DM being retarded?
>>
>>51728812
While parties can handle threats above their level, 5e characters are pretty fragile at level 1. Depending on everyone else's level, I might say that it's your DM.
>>
>>51728812
The only games balanced around this is where the majority of power is at level 1, and this is not like that at all.
>>
>>51728812
If they are a class that doesn't get hit easily, like a shortbow Rogue or sniping warlock. The deal is when they give out XP, high level characters don't excel much while low level ones excel a lot.

Last session my level 9 fighter got around 1000 XP for one fight and skill check for dragging a longship through an ice covered ocean. That would make a level 1 character level 3. It was nothing to me but it would be a lot to a low level character.

Though just because you could doesn't mean you should. Not only is it more fun to bring in a leveled up character, milestones are more fun and less painful.
>>
>>51728812
>DM being retarded
A level 1 character can be 1 shot by a stiff breeze. I'd vote party average level -1.
>>
>>51728812
I've been doing a level lower than the rest of the party, and also with basic starter gear. It's been working out pretty well so far, it's a punishment without completely killing the will to play. Starting back at level 1 is a great way to encourage your players to quit.
>>
>>51728812
At the very fucking least start at level 5.

The power difference between level 1 and 5 is great. You have maybe four times as much health and twice as many attacks and much, much better utility in general.

The power difference between 5 and 11 is less, but still notable.
The power difference between 11 and 17 is, again, notable, but not super great unless you abuse stuff like wish a lot.

If your DM really insists on 'punshing you for dying' then it should be a level or two below the party, but they should avoid putting you below level 5 if everyone is 5 or above.
>>
Besides Volo's, anyone got any source material for mind flayer lairs?

Are there any in OotA? I haven't read through it.
>>
>>51728906
The way I did it was have a catchup modifier for lower leveled characters that got greater each level. It was more for not punishing people for being sick or whatever, but it also worked for new characters.
>>
>>51728954
If you don't mind going back to an earlier edition lore book, Lords of Madness is top notch. Forgotten Realms, has every bit of crunchy lore you need, and actually includes a little side quest for each monster.
>>
So silly new use for the UA wizard. Hold person, change saving throw to strength save. If target fails saving throw, they automatically fail all subsequent throws.
>>
>>51729032
Does the changed save apply beyond the first save throw?

That's pretty fucking broken.

>>
>>51729032
Seems perfectly reasonable. Yep. Perfectly reasonable.
>>
>>51729818

Moon Druid then. So you don't ever have to rely on that shitty CON

Make it variant human and start with Resilient CON if you can. That'll at least keep ya at -2
>>
>>51729853
Yeah, because when you have broken renevant shit you don't need health because you autorevive at the start of all of your turns unless you're killed for good, in which case you just appear again somewhere else.

So basically don't fucking do it if you want to go man mode.

Play a wizard and be very, very tactical. Have things like false life up, shield ready, portent to ensure you don't get ambushed and hit out of nowhere, maybe even the 'alert' feat from variant human.

Unclassed.

You're going to die in a few hits, so your goal is to never get hit in the first place.

If you're lucky, the DM will let you learn some class abilities as you go.

>Have things like false life up, shield ready, portent to ensure you don't get ambushed and hit out of nowhere

at level 1 I only have 2 spells per day tho
>>
>>51729989
>Starting at level 1

That's just asking to die.

If you played, say, moon druid, you don't even get moon druid features until level 2. At level 1, you would have 5 HP, and taking 10 damage would instantly kill you, permanently. Or taking 6 damage when you're at 1 HP.

Starting at level 1 is for lame-os. But if you do start at level 1, suck it up and do it anyway. One spell slot for false life, the other for either an emergency shield or the 'sleep' spell, I suppose. Then the rest would be ritual spells.

At level 1 you're not exactly massively far behind by staying away and doing 1d10 firebolts anyway.
>>
>>51729980
Actually now that I think about it, wouldn't he be a Bard? He always puts on a performance, captivating crowds of people?
>>
>>51730046
>>51729980
>>51729916
Again, unless you want to make him some other character (Someone who can actually fight fucking monsters) then you either need an extremely lenient DM who is letting you win many encounters through non-standard means or you need to play some other system like GURPS that's less focused on being heroic in every single combat.

Or, I guess if you never surpass the first few levels, it might be fine, but once you've surpassed the first few levels you'll have gone beyond what he's normally capable of.

Isn't a high level Kazuma just Rance?
>>
>>51729032
The UA doesn't make it clear whether only the first saving throw is changed or if subsequent throws are changed as well. I'd reckon it's probably the former because of cases like Hold Person.
>>
>>51728906
>it's a punishment without completely killing the will to play.
See this i don't get, why the need to punish a player for what is typically unfortunate rolls? I have never seen a player actively try to get their character killed outside of perfectly valid story reasons so i don't understand this need to go "Haha fuck you, you died, start at level 1 you fucking scrub!" Especially in a game where level 1 characters can be killed in one hit.
>>
DM here. I've always allowed every UA that's come out to be used at my table (though I'm debating whether or not to allow Lore Master, but that's irrelevant to my question). I have a player who wants to play Artificer, but he'd rather keep Wizard at the core of it (meaning he'd be using the earlier UA).
Would you guys allow the Artificer tradition UA to be used even though Artificer was subsequentially released as a class in UA?

I like the abilities of a GOOlock and can half get my head around it, but not sure I can 100% work it out.

Though the simple idea of "horrible things happened and I asked the heavens for help/vengeance and this GOO/devil/fey responded" works for anything.

Though would you want to stop taking levels after a while if you found your patron distasteful?

>>
>>51730778
>The editing is also the best of all the 5e adventures so far.
It's... really not. The organization is a mess, the overall setup of the campaign is confusing, info on how you get the players to go to the dungeons and take on the cult is not clear outside of them wandering around, and accessing the information about non-combat NPCs is a pain in the ass. Plus there are inconsistencies with some of the NPCs, like the necromancer in the intro part being depicted way differently than he's described.
>>
>>51730628
Wait, really? They got rid of the rule saying you gain a minimum of 1hp/lv?

I would say out of all the released adventures Storm Kings Thunder comes closest to it.

It's simple, you have many options on what things you do and how to aproach them and it has lots of optional shit to do. It is also the best adventure if you want to continue with your Lost Mines characters.

Even if you ignore the Minimum of 1 rule, the least ammount of HP you could possibly make is with a wizard's hit die, a d6, to whom the average is 3, and 3-3= 0, not -1
>>
>>51731096
Except it's rounded up. d6s get 4hp every level.

Spoilers for LMoP follow, I guess.

Once upon a time there was a naive first time DM for 5e. The party had just taken care of the Redbrand Hideout and stowed them in the local prison. The prisoners were slated to be taken to the Lord's Alliance in Neverwinter, escorted by a trade caravan. Halia Thornton was the one who had employed the caravan and its guards and she was planning to have them escape with the prisoners before reaching Neverwinter and selling them as slaves on the black market.
The party, being the lawful goody-two-shoes that they were, got it in their heads to help escorting the prisoners (and they wanted to see Neverwinter of course!). This made the DM shit his pants in panic, but he was able to scrounge up material for some city-based play. Before they arrived in Neverwinter the prisoners tried escaping, most got hunted down and summarily executed but some escaped in the confusion as the party was fighting off a goblin ambush.
Beat down and weary, the party finally arrived and got themselves some rooms in the cheapest inn they could find (because fuck the fancy one where the DM had planned a ton of encounters). They spent a day or two seeing the sights of the city and replenishing their supplies of adventuring gear (healer's kits were especially sought after due to the sadistic DM being a fan of gritty healing rules). Visiting the shops also gave them a few leads on a merchant that recently had fallen into a string of unusually good luck (much to the chagrin of the other merchants, who wanted his luck to end). A strange man also approached them, asking for their help in a matter of object retrieval.
Not being adverse to earning a few coins, the party set out to seek these new leads. Abnormally large beggars were constantly showing up wherever the party went looking for clues and eventually they revealed their true nature: Uthgardians desperately seeking a shaman that had been lost from their tribe.

Cont.

Putting two and two together, the party deduced a correlation between their tasks; the warehouse which held the orb they had agreed to retrieve belonged to the suddenly lucky merchant, and it was also where the northmen's shaman was likely held.
After a hasty stakeout the party rushed into the warehouse without much of a plan and found themselves waging improvised siege warfare among crates and barrels. They did eventually find the missing shaman (who was in the process of escaping on his own when the party busted in), but not before the watch had turned up clasped them all in iron.
Thrown into custody, the party and the Uthgardian were at the mercy of the infamously slow justice system of Neverwinter. As luck would have it, however, a watchman was growing increasingly tired with a life of hard work and low pay. He set the party free for a promise of adventure, and the party (+ one watchman) could sneak out from the prison under cover of night. The night which was lit up by a fairly familiar warehouse going up in flames.
The party said their goodbyes to the shaman once at the gates of the city and set out towards Thundertree.

Many things happened in Thundertree and the surrounding area (among other things the party's halberdier got decapitated by his companions for attempting to kill an otherworldly being), but nothing which is important to the tale of the Red Wizards and their search for the mine of Phandelver.

About half a tenday later the party found themselves emerging from a strange elven ruin (the presence of which had been alluded to by an enigmatic old scholar at the Stonehill inn) when they were surrounded by bounty hunters. A brief but bloody battle later our heroes could conclude that these hunters of bounties were after a bounty on their heads for crimes committed in Neverwinter. There was also the matter of a Thayvian symbol that one of them held.

He's already a murderous psychopath vengeance paladin so of course he would get revenge. It's just that I'm actually a bit worried he'll die to some shitty regular enemies and not some big bad.
He's also been kinda possessed by a host of vengeful spirits who want to see the sword that killed them destroyed, so I thought that would be a good goal to work towards.

>>51731473
Well, I'd probably leave most of revenant as-is. My players enjoy the story and characters more than combat so I think all I'd need to to is to make clear that being a revenant is definitely not a good thing.
Maybe I'd push him to destroy the sword first and then start to deteriorate his character physically as his hold on the physical world weakens. This would give the party plenty of time to say proper goodbyes to one of their own and give the paladin's player more time to think of a new character.
I doubt the others would be jealous of his immortality, especially if I made it so that he has a chance of being possessed by the spirits every time he hits 0 hp.
This is all of course just a plan B IF he manages to die to a stupid trap, goblins or something ridiculous and unfulfilling. The paladin just happens to be everybody's favorite character.
>>
>>51731581
Those situations seem like the least likely ends to result in someone becoming a revenant. "I was killed by a spike trap left by a kobold, now I am so angry I will walk the earth as an undead until all gods are dead!"

Cursing the foe that got away, a most shrill-voiced druidess screeching about Malar, the party went further into the Neverwinter Woods, seeking clues of the whereabouts of the lost mine of Phandelver.
Cragmaw Castle found itself methodically surrounded and its inhabitants murdered or run off by the adventurers. A most peculiar female Drow did however make it out alive, only to be attacked and disemboweled by a stray saber-toothed tiger (a form which the Malarite had assumed in their previous encounter). Using the now derelict Cragmaw Castle as a base, they went further into the forest. Returning to the castle after a short foray they found an amicable Lathandrite who joined the party with the recommendations of a rather strange, and invisible, elf.
Finding naught on their forays into the woods but hospitable firbolgs and nasty commando goblins, they ventured back to Thundertree to seek out Reidoth. The druid himself was nowhere to be seen, but a large number of scoundrels and mercenaries were hard at work trying to prepare a dragon carcass for transportation. Being always on the lookout for a business opportunity, the self appointed party account/bard had sold the dragon carcass to a Neverwinter merchant.
After taking care of the "annoyances", mercenaries and ambushing kobolds both, Reidoth eventually agreed to show the party where to find the lost mine of Phandelver.
Little did they know (well some of them suspected something was afoot, but these suspicions were not aired with the others) that a map to the very mine they sought had been found by the Malarite, and its existence relayed to her employer in Neverwinter.

The party, lead by a slightly too virile mountain goat (Reidoth did not make much fuss about being a horny old goat), finally found themselves at the entrance to the lost mine of Phandelver.

Inside the mine one of the party clerics (and, for a considerable amount of sessions, DMPC due to player absence) was stricken with grief as he spied the corpse of his "cousin" Rockseeker.
Abandoning the poor abbot to his grief the party ventured forward into the mine, strengthened by the knowledge that their long sought goal was in sight. They quickly found out that they were not alone in the mine (and that you don't split the sodding party) when a large prowling wolf pounced on the stray sorcerer. While the robed elf was struggling with his canine opponent, someone all too familiar paralyzed the lone barbarian. Being unable to fight back he was forced to watch as a huge tiger with fangs the size of his underarm tore into his flesh; the Malarite had found them once again.
The heroes found themselves victorious, as they are wont to do, and set out to explore the rest of the mine.

Lonely (and amnesiac) flaming skulls, sneaky bugbears and even sneakier spiders all accosted the party as they ventured forth. They dispatched their foes with grace (although the grace of taking four javelins to the face can be debated) and huddled together in the perceived safety of a Leomund's Tiny Hut.
After having rested for only a few moments the "bubble" (for that was their name given to Leomund's spell) disappeared with a soft pop. A disembodied voice began monologuing about what he was to do with these most intriguing specimens. Being unable to decide on a course of action the adventurers simply chose to listen to the man.
The voice rambled on for a while and eventually the invisibility spell he was covered in disappeared. Before them stood a strangely familiar man: the one who had hired them to retrieve that orb in Neverwinter! Judging from his shaven, tattooed head, billowing red robes and thick accent, this was a Red Wizard of Thay. And if his appearance was not enough, the man divulged that the globe he so dearly sought was one of Szass Tam's scrying orbs!

Make sure it's clear that this isn't just an out of the blue DM fudge 'a-actually anon your paladin doesn't die' but there's actually a clear sensible reason for it.

I've seen it before where an item on the player's person might save a character, but it still feels a bit fudged when it's something like a sword or something rather than an amulet that's clearly an amulet used to preserve life.

Maybe give the guy a chance to sacrifice a portion of their soul or spirit or whatever into an item where, upon the character's death, their spirit departs as per normal but a combination of the vengeful spirits haunting him and the remnant of his soul reanimates his body, possibly skewing his moral perception since he's only partially himself but allowing him to fight on until the deed is done.

The party agreed to help the man, for fighting him in their weakened state was not an option to be considered.
Trying to trick him into fighting a foe for the party they claimed that he had to pass through the room which the flaming skull protected. The Thayvian considered the information and invisibly strode through the room, unaccosted by the flaming skull, and the party took this chance to escape. The Wizard continued through the mines and eventually found the font of magic within its depths which the heroes (and everyone) were looking for.
While the Thayvian searched the eastern end of the mines the adventurers went through the northern parts. Among the remains of a battle (several crispy bugbears included) they found the Black Spider, bound and gagged. Ungagging the drow had him throw spells and incantations at the party, so they kept him silent while inspecting the throne room he lay in. An overly greedy halfling accountant found himself perched on the lap of a giant statue, forcing out the gemstones it had for eyes. As the statue was desecrated rocks fell and only the drow died.
Battered and bruised, the heroes decided to return to the cave entrance for some well-deserved rest.

During this time the Red Wizard was hard at work; sending a Spectator to its home plane with a well-worded Suggestion spell and using a scroll of Sending to inform his colleagues in Thay about his discovery.

The heroes' rest was interrupted by the voice of the Wizard.
He had a proposal for them: leave and never speak of the lost mine again and they would keep their lives, plus a stray dwarf that he had found.
Having just about had enough of the mouthy bald man, they attacked him with everything they had. Spells were flung (and counterspelled) and mauls were swung (and deflected).
A few moments later and all that remained of the Red Wizard was a red pulp (as the third Hold Person thrown at him was not resisted).

The party themselves were not without casualties however, as their old cleric and trusty pack-mule had been turned into frozen statues by the devious Thayvian.

Knowing that nothing deals with grief as well as looting, they swiftly went through the Wizard's belongings. Among broken potion vials, strange books and scroll cases they found something alarming: not a scroll of Alarm, but a scroll of Sending with the Wizard's colleagues being the spell's receiver. The implications of this discovery hastened the adventurers and pushed them to explore the rest of the mine so they could be gone from the place before any more Red Wizards arrived.
They gave the dwarven cleric and their pack mule a quick burial, grabbed the stray Nundro Rockseeker and left the place in a hurry.

And that's how the Red Wizards came to control the mine of Phandelver.

It's also 3 AM and this prose is shit. I'm sorry.

So I got roped into DMing for some friends. We're all new and settle on 5E. They're all spoiled by video games.

Does anyone have any tips how to handle players like this? The first session we're planning will be a pregenned module, level 1 adventurers. What it seems to me that they want is complete customization over their character development, probably wanting to pick different things from different classes, every level, and out of order that those abilities would normally be acquired but scaled to their power level and whatever. Now I know this is retarded for them because they hardly know the rules, but what can I do to curb their appetite for new powers every step of the way and saying "I want to be able to do 'this'", when 'this' is clearly some class feature, feat, or spell that, while it may exist, doesn't show up on their character sheet?

I want to follow the given rules first so they can learn what's what. Should I go along with their requests if they roleplay their improvisation and just dish out disadvantages when they try to cast spells not on their sheet or expend additional spell slots or increase casting times? Should I raise the DC/AC for stupid stuff like attempting powerful signature attacks? I don't want them getting too powerful too quick, otherwise I won't know how to plan encounters or anything.

I realize D&D may not be the game for us but it is what it is for now, I'd just like some advice so that the first run goes well and we can maybe try some other stuff.
>>
>>51732556
Basically some people think the Raven Queen is an insert of one of the WotC characters who killed Greyhawk's God of Death and took his place. She's basically a super edgy Death God that's also somehow not evil.

There's no actual evidence that it was the case, and by all accounts she's basically just a fantasy version of the Morrigan. She is a pretty shit god though, and 4e pushed her WAY too hard.

That said it's not like designer PCs with god-like power are anything new. Basically any mortal of importance on Krynn was a PC at one point.
>>
>>51732644

Not him, but
>bringing her back
She was from 4E and most of the cosmological changes that introduced have been scrubbed from 5E.

>from the Shadowfell
One of the aforementioned cosmological changes was Shar (a shit deity) merging the Plane of Shadow (a pre-existing, and as of 3X, an MP-coterminous plane used for short range, non-ethereal teleportation) with the Negative Energy Plane. This made it EDGY AS FUCK because the Negative Energy Plane is all about sucking out life and making weird shades.
While you'd think both Shadow and Negative are edgy on their own, they were mostly empty and aimless whatever; it's only when they got combined did the designers decide it needed to be a proactively fuck-you-and-everything-else plane. It was restyled as a "nega-Feywild", and the only way you can get worse than "Feywild" is "Dark Feywild".
Also, let me reiterate that Shar is shit and anything she does is double shit, so all the shittiness of the Shadowfell on its own just got multiplied by virtue of being related to her.

>the most generic Goddess of Death
Not even a real Death deity. She's just some side bitch, has a meaningless tie-in with Orcus who continues to be a perennial has-been, and her backstory is literally "was a powerful wizard who died and then beat up some other shitty death god that isn't even from the same campaign setting as Shar or the rest of where 4E is taking place". Name a single cool FR deity that was originally mortal. Pro tip: you can't.

As a follower of the Raven Queen you're supposed to:

*Murder people who are trying to defy fate
*Beef with cults of Orcus
*Never be sad when someone dies
*Kill all Undead

Additionally, in 4e the Raven Queen could make one hit against HER FOLLOWER a crit until the follower prays to her and figures out what pointless task the DM/Raven Queen wants to railroad him into doing.

The entire metaplot of 4e adventures was about stopping Orcus, a long-time D&D figure from 1st edition, from killing the Raven Queen, a literal-who goddess that just kind of appeared in the Player's Handbook.

Basically she's a Mary Sue God that, while not the shittiest thing to ever happen in D&D, got so horribly mixed up in all the skub happening from 4th Edition that for a lot of players there's a particularly strong bit of taint to them still using her when the rest of the 4E cosmology was basically reverted.

Oh man, that reminds me of the rudest awakening I ever received as a young DM.

Back in the day, I had a really awful DMNPC, and at some point I thought it would be a great way to motivate my players by having him get captured and they would need to save him.

Instead, they all lost every last bit of motivation, and it wasn't until that moment that I realized just how awful my DMNPC was and simply let him disappear from the story.

They've shoehorned them into various alignments to cover the spectrum, and are acting in places where they have no powerbase.

Depends on what pact you want. If you want to go blade, your priorities are about like a Ranger. Attack stat (str) casting stat (cha) and then defense stats (dex and con). Dex probably more than con for initiative and because you can get temp HP from spells.

You can also pick up Heavily armored and drop dex's importance.

If you don't want blade pact, just take cha con and dex like a normal warlock that's gotten moderately armored (and shillelagh) for free

I'd honestly rather have the mace if ignoring the Hexblade curse. If i'm going to use Str for my shit i might as well get some irresistible magic damage off it and apply a nice condition. If factoring it in then of course the patron made specifically for melee is better with it but mace is still a good as shit sidearm if something gets too close for comfort so you can knock em down and run for the hills.

Okay.
Have him work with other backstabbing drow, maybe a fraternity of drow men who are sick of all the goddamn spiders and the matriarchs and want to turn the tables. Make it clear that Lolth is aware of his plot, have driders and faithful of Lolth come after him, force him to make deals with rival gods like Zuggtmoy for powerful spell, artifacts, etc.

If he's serious about it and not just bored to the point of lolsorandumb I-is-becum-da-Sooper-Bad-Gawd, he'll either table it and find something more achievable, like a place of power under her as one of her champions, or he'll go balls to the walls, succeed, or be horribly killed and devoured forever in Spider Hell.
>>
>>51733605
Yes.

Though he might be able to make do with a demon army and a couple demon Lords, if he's got a good plan.

But it would be a very fucking difficult mission, and he's just as likely to do it and have one of the demon Lords or another good take his power instead...

There are some God slaying weapons in faerun, which allow a moral to kill a god, but they wouldn't let him take the goods place, they'd make a power vacuum.

He'd need something else to take the gods place.

They're shits, too. The gods pretty much never kill each other. The most god-murdering that ever happened was when they were all depowered mortals; the rest of the time, gods are getting bumped off by other mortals with fancy artifacts.

They're SHIT.
>>
>>51733705
Regardless of your helpful advice, as GM should try to make something as impactful as the death and usurpation of an evil goddess of an entire species something meaningful and difficult to attain, if only for the sake of Fun.
>>
>>51733688
So uses gods to guard his shit, and guard the way into his realm. He doesn't *let* mortals or spirits in at all, and even the gods have very restricted access.

Not *impossible*, but damn close.

I think he'd have better luck getting help and an artifact from from the hell's, the abyss, or the feywild. He might need to get an artifact meant for taking the place for demon Lords and have it altered to work on gods.

That's the approach I'd suggest. Stealing from Ao would be harder than killing the god, by orders of magnitude.

>>51733725

Chrono_Trigger_Artwork3.jpg
109KB, 700x420px
So my group loves Chrono Trigger and we want to incorporate Dual and Triple Techs into our 5E game. For those who haven't played the game, Dual Techs let multiple characters combine two or more special abilities, be they spells or martial maneuvers, into a new power with properties in between the two original moves. For example, a warrior with a spin attack and a mage with a flame blast could imbue the warrior's sword with fire and make a spinning flame strike that hits multiple nearby enemies. That same warrior could make a combination move with a healer's cure spell to spread the healing to multiple allies in an area of effect instead of a single target.

My goal with this system is two-fold
1) The rules have to be pretty simple. If Dual Techs can be performed on the fly, I need to be able to figure out what's appropriate within about 20-30 seconds. A chart or table would be handy. If they need to be learned or created in advance, 3-5 minutes would be the limit.

2) They can't be strictly better than using the spells / maneuvers separately. In Chrono Trigger the main drawback of Dual Techs was their high MP cost, plus you needed both characters active which meant occasionally having to delay a character's action. I'm thinking one of the two characters involved would have to spend Inspiration to perform a Dual Tech, and maybe two of three (or all three) for a Triple Tech. That would also prevent characters from 'spamming' them.

Any advice or examples would be awesome. Thanks.

Spending inspiration to perform them is a nice idea. I often want to spend inspiration to do something cool instead of just for advantage. Hero point, basically.

Then the general theme would be to take a multi-target attack and give it a property from a single target attack. Like combine Immolation spell with Whirlwind attack to spread immolation to everyone hit by the ranger. Immolation is bad normally anyway. And the reverse to narrow a multi-attack onto a single target. LIke the mage readies to cast a fireball (because all he has is fireballs) and the fighter slams it into the enemy so you can throw it into a melee safely, either adding fire damage to each hit or making the fireball into a cone originating from the fighter.

>On candlekeep I also hear that they're also acting contrary to the factions goals, etc - but I'm less well read on the FR factions than other aspects of the setting.

This is sort of true, sort of not.
The Harpers being meddlesome dicks who hire third parties to disrupt groups they think are altering the balance of power and fight evil groups is pretty much par for course; they've always basically been an distributed independent spy network that mostly just tries to do random acts of fighting evil without trying to rock the boat too hard. They came off as a bunch of Good-aligned meddlesome dicks, even in an in-universe fashion

The Zhentarim are WAY different now. Previously they were straight-up Captain Planet villains, worshipping evil deities of evil, doing evil things because they're evil, making alliances with Beholders because they're evil, and constantly self-defeating with their internal betrayals and politics. Now they seem more like the Mafia or shady businessmen rather then the forward arm of an expanding army, so they're bad guys who actually act in semi-rational ways. To the credit of the writers, it sounds like the entire original faction of the Zhentarim are all dead and this is just the remains of the old group in Darkhold re-imagining itself over time to become something less pointlessly evil.

The Lord's Alliance is just doing what it's always done.

The Emerald Enclave is the most out of character; they were located in an entirely different part of Faerun (the Vilhon Reach) and were involved in keeping the wilderness from declining there, to the point of possibly starting a plague to cripple one city's population from spiraling out of control and then healing it later once they were no longer able to overharvest trees. They rode that True Neutral train HARD, and weren't particularly expansionistic.

Tempus is my favorite war god.
Not a psycho, not bloodthirsty, not a butcher.
He's a soldier's god; he fights when it's time to fight, does it by fair rules, wants everyone to fight clean, doesn't pick sides at all, and when the fight is done he wants it to be done rather then pointlessly drag on.
>>
Our paladin is overshadowing the rest of the party, please send help and/or divine retribution.
The group consists of trickery cleric, swashbuckler, hunter ranger, lore bard and the vengeance paladin himself.
Especially the ranger and swashbuckler are doing piddly worth of damage compared to the paladin and his smites. And the cleric is yet to actually think of utilizing his many features, like turn undead which he completely forgot when they were almost overwhelmed by some undead bastards.
Any way I can even the playing field for the rogue and ranger? Just handing out magic items fro them seems a bit cheap.
>>
>>51734276
This seems flat out unbelievable. Paladins are pretty powerful, but he shouldn't be overshadowing the rogue at all times. He has limited smites.

You DO have more then three encounters per day, right?
>>
>>51734276
Starve the paladin of spell slots, meaning throw more encounters at them between each long rest. If paladins aren't complaining about being out of spell slots, they're not being pushed far enough.
>>
>>51734276
Realize that high burst damage and being the tank bro is what a paladin is all about.

Your swashbuckler should be getting his sneak attacks in every round or he is fucking up somehow. That alone should be doing higher and more consistent damage than the pally.

Tell the ranger to pick up sharpshooter if they haven't already. What kind of ranger are they? If they're a hunter they should've picked up colossus slayer and should be cleaning up people that the pally and rogue fail to down.

Your trickery cleric is there to provide utility and support. They aren't really about high dpr. Not until they can polymorph into a t-rex.

Also, design encounters that are more than just slugfests. Place enemies at range. Let your ranger have a use. The swashbuckler and run to enemies that are isolated and do is duals. Paladins are typically shit at range.
>>

I came here to point out that MASK is the answer to a cool FR deity - and he's actually been more than one mortal, if you really get into it.

If you read Paul Kemp's Erevis Cale/Shadowstorm series and the kickass finisher he did with the Godborn (Aka the only book in "the Sundering" bit of mediocrity that FR decided was a fun thing for Salvatore to push) then you'll understand.
>>
>>51734317
>The swashbuckler and run to enemies that are isolated and do is duals.
Fuck I'm tired.

The swashbuckler can run to enemies that are isolated and do his duels.*

Also, I'm gonna echo what the other anons said. Make sure you're giving them more than just a couple encounters per day. A paladin should have to think about when they want to lay down those smites and make them count. If they're just burning through them without a care you're fucking up. Once the paladin is spent your rogue and ranger will REALLY outshine him.
>>
Which gish has the most consistent damage throughout the day?
>>
>>51734357
I have no idea the actual answer to that question.
But I've been running a swashbuckler/sorcerer that is mostly a swashbuckler who makes great use out of booming blade/sneak attack.
>>

>>

>>
>>51734405
Another thought: Paladins have very few ranged options, so depending on the composition of your party you might be able to force a ranged fight where the Paladin is at a disadvantage
>>
>>51734430
Does he need it?
>>
>>51734376
Here's the thing, my man.
You can totally rely more on roleplaying and still have them go through more than three encounters per day.

Don't buy into every session has to be a single day in terms of length. However, if you really do prefer to do much less combat you should look into the variant resting rules which were written with the idea of doing less encounters per day.

>It would help if the rogue wasn't rolling <10 every single attack roll.
Did they dump dex or something? If they just have shit luck, nothing will fix that. Tell them to buy new dice.

>He took horde breaker. He hits often enough but his damage is just shit compared to the paladin.
I'm going on the assumption that he's an archer. Really, tell him to look into sharpshooter. With that and the extra attack from horde breaker he should easily be outputting consistently high damage.

Again, really the only thing you should be worrying about is how you're allowing your paladin to always be smiting. I mean, that's what people do warlock/paladin for. Don't just let him be getting that for free.

If you really want to give out a magic item, maybe toss the rogue a +1 or 2 dagger to make sure he hits if he really rolls as shit as you say he does.

Max Str > 14 Dex (for medium armor) > Max Cha (If you'll ever hit level 12 to add Cha to damage) > Max Con > leftover cha (if you don't hit 12th level) > Int/Wis

Apply liberal amounts of Heavy Weapon Master for bonus action attacks fueled by insane nova, and beg for short rests.
>>
>>51734443
Thinking back I actually realize I haven't been throwing that many ranged enemies at them. Time to send in some more variable enemies I guess.
>>51734461
>Did they dump dex or something
It just hasn't been a priority to max out yet I suppose.
>maybe toss the rogue a +1 or 2 dagger
I've been thinking of doing that. the donjon loot generator I use for loot just for some guidelines, not for exact drops actually rolled a +2 dagger for an encounter they'll have a chance to fight next time.
We'll see how that changes things.
But it seems I really need to rework some stuff to limit the paladin's smiting ability. Revamp dungeons and restrict long rests.

>>51734472
>>51734469
My fuck, am I stupid. I completely forgot about the separation between pacts and patrons. I don't know what got into my head thinking that that hexblade was a pact. Granted, its kinda weird that your source of power is a sword, but eh.
>>
>>51734518
Yeah, when you're running dungeons you really don't want them to have the impression that it's safe to be taking a long rest in there. At least, not most the time.

Also perhaps another option when it comes to random combat encounters that you want to keep short:
Restrict the number of enemies, make them hit hard, and die quickly.

I once had a pally blow his load on an enemy with 30 hp and holy fuck did he over kill that skellyguard. Then when it came time for the boss battle he nearly shat his pants because he didn't have anymore smites.
>>
>>51734497
Just pointing out that their "focus on factions" is poorly done.
>>
>>51734559
Fuck, they're actually gonna have some trouble in the next encounter I have planned. The paladin already blew his load and they can't really take a nap while in some cursed prison plane full of ghosts.
I guess we'll learn how paladin tears taste next time we play.
>>
>>51734573
Good. That'll teach em.

Also, they're dealing with ghosts? Now that is a good time to throw a magical weapon to your rogue so he can actually hit them.

If you're like me you probably like your magic items to be more exciting than a simple +to hit.
If you've got a ghost theme going on, why not have him find a dagger that's got a spirit trapped inside it. And once/day you can get the aid of an unseen servant.

I was thinking of a dagger with the spell storing ability. That would open some nice utility angles as well, but I fear it might be too strong. And there's always the risk that the cleric will negotiate the dagger for himself.
I'll weight my options.

>>
>>51734105
Hmm, changing AoE shape could be interesting, the idea of a fireball turning into a cone from being used as an attack rather than a pure explosion. Something to think about.

>>51734136
>I don't know how you could possibly hope to boilerplate it.
Yeah, it's a problem, hence why I'm looking for help. DESU it would be easier if things were like Chrono Trigger in that martial and magical options were more straight-forward and you could just add the damage of one onto the AoE/targets of the other.
>>
>>51734636
One last thing before I'm out.
Make sure you make good use of the environment as well.
Your rogue will be able to get around it fairly easily with their bonus dash.
The ranger can just shoot at enemies using it to their advantage.

The paladin will have to make due as best as he can.
The trickery cleric should be able to make use of their double to otherwise reach far away enemies/distract them.
>>
>>51730511
Say the PC doesn't willingly make a pact. Through crap luck/fate/circumstance, they're "touched" by a GOO that they may not even be able to identify.

The GOO, if you use a conservative Lovecraft reading, is utterly uncaring or unaware of the PC. Maybe as the PC grows in power, the GOO comes to regard them as a lost part of itself and begins trying to bring the wayward "tentacle" home.
>>
>>51734660

PAM lets you get a bonus action hit in, making it superior for classes that don't use their bonus action effectively already.

Rogues can't use them with sneak attack, and GWM is superior if you need to choose between them unless you have something to improve the PAM hit, like Smite.

Is hexblade bladepact vhuman warlock viable? I'm planning to go for at least 5 levels. Not sure about multiclassing.
>>
>>51734880
Page 13 has what you need. I heavily recommend you follow the book's advice and assign 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8 among your 6 attributes. Remember that your race will raise some of these attributes as well.

I also recommend that you put at least a 12 into Constitution no matter what race or class you choose, and a 14 or higher if you're playing any kind of warrior. Constitution determines how many hit points your character starts with and gains as they level up, as well as how many they recover when resting. It's useful for everyone so being a little above human average is a good thing.

Other than that, check out what your character's class lists as their Primary Abilities (page 45, in the big table) and try to put your highest attribute(s) into those. You're going to rely on that attribute the most so it's important that it's your highest. For example, if you're a Wizard you should put that 15 into Intelligence.

Why is the kensai monk tradition so shitty?

We are running a campaign next week with no full casters and with samurai jack coming back next month I thought it would be cool to check out the kensai monastic tradition.

First perk, gain proficiency in 3 martial weapons. Awesome, I can take a two handed great sword no dachi style. So far so good

Perk two, you can use Dex or strength for your weapon, ok, they could already do that for monk weapons it's built into the monk class, idk I guess they had to distinguish between a monk and a kensai weapon? Also you can use your unarmoured martial arts damage die instead of the weapons damage die. Martial arts die Max's at 1d10 at lvl 17 so at best it's only as good as the weapon damage I'm replacing. Totally useless.

Perk 3 I can burn my bonus action to do an extra 1d4 pummeling damage. What? Why would I use my bonus action to do a shitty 1d4 when I already have martial arts as a monk which lets me make an unrmoured strike at 1d4 + Dex or str as a bonus action? Useless.

Perk 4. If you make an unarmed strike as part of the Attack action on your turn and are holding a kensei weapon, you can use that weapon to defend yourself. You gain a + 2 bonus to AC.
This one confused me. If I use the bonus action to make an unarmed strike with martial arts does that trigger this? My gut says no. I have to not attack with my sword and use it as a shield and kick them or something. Kensei is supposed to be all about being one with your weapon, and I'm being incentivised to not attack with it. Sooooo meh.

Lvl 6, it's a magic weapon and I can burn my bonus action to double my prof bonus before I even see my attack roll. Yawn.

The only good thing they kept was adding ki points to pump up my rolls and damage and you have to wait til lvl 11. Give it right away wizards! Ki points are limited and scale up naturally. Am I missing something about how meh this is?
>>
>>51735183
So you could very possibly get 20 20 20 20 20 20.
>>
Rolled 7, 16, 3, 16, 20, 17, 8, 8, 9, 8, 3, 2 = 117 (12d20)

>>51735168

>>51735077
rolling for stat is bad. There will be a bunch of homebrew related to it to prevent manchild crying

Like you roll two arrays and choose one, you get to reroll if at least 2 stats aren't above 13. You can reroll and choose standard array if you don't like it.

All these stuff screw with the rule of average and will end up with character that are stronger than normal, which will then screw the balance of the game and make it harder for DM to create encounter.

It also ruined the purpose of having a "unique" character or character with "weakness" or whatever pro-rolling people call it.

The only good way to roll is to roll in stat order. Only once. No crying. No throwing tantrum and killing your character off.
>>

You can't use martial arts with a Kensei weapon, its not a monk weapon.
Which also means perk 4 refers to choosing to NOT use your weapon to get +2 ac for a turn.

Wizards has a long standing history of favoring their namesake, and yes, kensei is kind of ass.

It only costs you your free bonus action punch. You can still do flurry and stunning blow with non-monk weapons in use.

Thanks
I completely skipped over Bob creating his character because I was like "fuck that I wanna make my own".
I gotta stop being retarded and impatient.

Remember that not everything actually contributed to a dual or triple tech. Some were gained early (Aura Whirl and Triple Raid) while others came later (Double Bomb and Omega Flare). Each character combination would only ever get 3 dual techs with each other character and 1 triple tech (if even)

I would have the players designate a specific action/maneuver/spell that they'd be willing to create a tech with, and pair it with another player. 2-3 Dual techs with each, one triple tech per unique pairing (assuming you have more than 3 players). Let them spend some time to create something interesting that you can approve, and then let them go ham. Many dual/triple techs weren't actually more damage than just having the characters attack alone so you don't need to put too many restrictions on their use. One of the actions is considered the "Base" while the other action(s) augment. So lets say you're combining a Battlemaster's Sweeping Attack with Sorcerer's Firebolt. The Sweeping Attack is the base action, and the Firebolt augments. The Sweeping Attack deals damage as normal, and the Firebolt's damage is added onto the Sweeping Attack minus the damage dice (CHA to damage, additional Fire damage, etc but not the Firebolt's d10s). Now you have a burstier, fiery Sweeping Attack with more utility, but your cost is two player's actions and less total damage (just like CT itself). I'd look at the new UA Lore Wizard's spell augmentation for a rough guideline for Tech creation. Change damage type once, change area of effect/range/etc once.

Another game that tried to use multi-player combos was Guild Wars 2. They aren't overly fantastic, but they needed to be MMO friendly. If you want ad hoc combos, you could look into GW2's system for inspiration as its pretty good for the ad hoc style. https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Combo

Your DM is being retarded. Look at the DnD Adventurer's League rules.

Bladeward isn't too terrible in the right condition, the biggest issue is if you get into a pinch where you need to survive an extra round or two, then instead of using Blade Ward that ate one of your cantrip slots, you can just use the Dodge action that everyone gets.

Good uses of Bladeward.
Eldrich Knights, because in a pinch they can cast blade ward and still dish out a single attack so they aren't j
Sorcerers, who can in a pinch, cast Quicken Bladeward in addition to using regular magic if they are particularly vulnerable or are trying something risky.
