A subject to kick us off, folks: what about any one faction in the game would you change, major detail or small?

Kindly no End Times or Age of Sigmar. If that is your cup of tea, please go elsewhere, especially if you're just going to shill or troll. For all intents and purposes, it's not the same universe.

"We do not sow"?
>>
>>51684279
It's a ASoIaF gag. House Greyjoy, whose coat of arms is a gold kraken, has the words 'We Do Not Sow' as their motto, a reference to the fact that their culture is based around piracy and reaving. Fellheart's a corsair with a kraken mask, and the druchii don't sow, either (they, like the Ironborn, have slaves for that).

I don't know if he'll see this, but a thread ago I was talking about Vampire Counts core and how I hated Ghouls. I said I'd post a list. This is a bit rough but here it is.

I'm also 8 points over so I need to shave some off.

Critique and comments welcome, cheers.

I'd rather a Cathay army desu. You could add in some extra rules for samurai and assassins, as well as warriors from Ind, so you could have a purely Cathayn force, or enough flexiblity to include some 'mercenaries' from other lands, or to even make Ind or Nippon armies on their own. Sort of like how at least in theory you could create an Estalian or Tilean army with Empire or Bretonnian rules.
>>
>>51685706
I've meant to compile a Cathay image in the same manner but I keep putting off digging up every reference to Cathay in books. Most of it is lore stuff, I don't think there's actually any rules, so it's kind of reverse of Yamato/Nippon I guess.

So I've just seen what is likely to be the end of a campaign, and I'd like to know if anyone's interested in the tale of it. Does anyone remember many threads ago, when I told the tale of my first WFRP session? Of how I barely escaped a beastman horde and made the heal check with no training in medicine? That campaign.

If most Vampires are, indirectly or not, descended from the culture of the Tomb Kings, why did they develop such a strange and unique form of dress and armor?
>>
>>51688262
Because GW has this philosophy that every faction needs a distinct look. I always felt it was the dumbest thing ever with Vampire Counts since they don't really have a unified culture and anyone from any walk of life can end up as an undead.
>>
>>51688262
Why are these vampires so ugly while Lahmians and Ulrika are pretty?
>>
>>51688449
I'm gonna guess that in 7'th edition there was still the kneejerk against the Twilight movies and GW wanted to distance their vampires from that.
>>
>>51688449
Vampires maintain a different appearance when in public, which would be important for a bloodline that infiltrates human society like the Lahmians. When in battle they drop this and put on their game face.
>>
>>51688248

Welcome Retard-steros.
>>
>>51688490
so its just magic? Illusion and they are really all ugly corpses?

also why does Mannlet looks so weird
>>
>>51688587
Still less retarded than Warhammer politics.
>>
>>51688262

To blend in with the culture of The Empire, as throughout their combined histories, they've tried to maintain secrecy of their heritage. That, combined with the fact that they would want to distance themselves from Nehekara, the Vampire Counts would have gone from political refugees, to absorbing members, lords and princelings from the Empire, their culture and customs.

>>51688449

See twilight,

And the concept of a "war face", that vampires could on the one hand be beautiful and alluring, but in times of war, affix an expression of their twisted, cursed souls.

And resting bitch face. The best face
>>
>>51688859
Who was gonna even gonna guess that the Vampires came from Nehekhara? I'm not even sure that is a known fact amongst people in the setting.
>>
>>51688859
>"We're gonna dress up like the Chaos Warriors and Dark Elves to fit right in. No one will ever suspect a thing."
>>
So this 9th age is any good?
>>
>>51689447
Started out as more balanced Warhammer (at the cost of a few fluffier/flavorful faction-specific rules/mechanics) but is now becoming more of its own thing with stuff like the new army limit mechanics and its own fluff (which, among other things, includes elements like "seven Chaos Gods based off the seven sins", fem!Sigmar liberating not!Rome from Skaven, etc.).

It has recently gathered quite a bit of skub due to this.
>>
>>51688248
That happened, but for some reason* they didn't just put every "noble" on the island to the sword.

* (Ned being a pussy and the somewhat less stringent social structure that let pretty much all the men on the islands take part in the piracy which would have mandated a pretty complete genocide IIRC)
>>
There are four parallel timelines that I know of in the Warhammer Fantasy universe.

One is the Storm of Chaos timeline, which is the setting of WFRP 2nd edition and most lore books associated with it, including Darkness Rising, which is an in-universe account of the Storm.

Another is the setting of Age of Reckoning and the three books written for it. Archaon never became Everchosen in this timeline and was replaced by Tchar'zanek of the Raven Host.

Finally there's The End Times timeline and of course the Blood Bowl alternate universe. Am I forgetting any?
>>
>>51685610
This is really great. Do you have more or a source?
>>
>>51689420
It worked.
>>
>>51689829
I'm really more annoyed that all the skeletons gets shit with batwings on them. Did the entire old world just have a batshit craze dynasty that was forgotten and VC is just selective with who they raise?
>>
>>51689945
Maybe giant bats are native to the region so they were a natural choice for iconography.
>>
>>51689963
What, the entire Old World?
>>
>>51690027
I assumed the skeletons they raised were native to Sylvania.
>>
>>51690035
Vampire Counts are not exclusive to Sylvania. It's mostly just a Carstein hotspot.

Sorry about the late response, went to bed.

Anyway, after we had the first session, we reached Schwartzhafen on a job after being annoyed by halfling bandits, we made our way back to Wurtbad after being jumped yet again by beastmen, this time with a beastlord armed with a chaos weapon. We barely survived while losing our slayer, and when one of us took the beastlord's chaos weapon to cremate them ( it was perpetually on fire.) we ended up sending his soul to Khorne. We managed to use this boost to our reputation to get the local elector count to sponsor us going to Mordheim( A decision we would regret, and that I opposed wholeheartedly.) There, we cleared out an old keep near the city, and started working on expanding our warband. This about where things went downhill, as we got worn down dealing with incredibly lethal enemies that we barely survived against even with the 400 or so xp at the end of sessions. He had these tables for encounters, and ended up with us against dark elf assassins and daemons from Araby, and eventually I was getting a bit tired of my elf mage, so I decided to try something new. The GM promised a RP heavy session, with less of the lethality. So of course I didn't trust him, and made a kislevite kossar so I could survive by keeping at range and using the bear he gave me to stay safe in melee. The bear lasted one combat, as we pursued some beastmen down a street and met skaven with a ratling gun. This ratling gun mutated my bear into basically chaos spawn while two with warpstone spears impaled me. Now agitated and with the rest of the group on their way out, I figured, fuck it, he's doing it like this, I may as well go full blood for the blood god. Made a norse character, an Ulfwerenar even, which he approved. Encountered the rest of the group in mordheim, tried to convince them to let my new berzerker join(despite the mutations and chaos weapons, they were still anti chaos) TBC
>>
>>51690850
I would be okay with Red Sonja Sigmar.
>>
>>51690850
Can't be worse than Valten.
>>
>>51690855
Guess what comes back from the alleyways? My old mutated bear. We all end up fighting it as best we can, but it's a beast and I'm pretty sure was faster than us. I use Ulfwerenar form to fight it off, and when it gets to about half health we all are made to roll toughness -50 or get infected with year fever and two other lethal diseases. Faced with characters new and old basiclally getting cancer, It devolved into argument and the game fell apart. Maybe we just aren't good with the lethality of the system, maybe it was the Gm's fault.
But hey, at least now I can do a norse campaign.
>>
>>51688599
Probably more like minor transfiguration.

>mfw i've been pronouncing marienburg wrong all this time

It just hit me last night.
>>
>>51691332
"Mar-ee-en-burg", like it would be pronounced if it was English. I only just realised it should be pronounced "Mar-een-burg", like marine.
>>
>>51691311
So how did you pronanunce it?
>>
>>51691350
I'm gonna keep pronanuncing it the first way. It sounds more germanic.
>>
>>51691402
But if it were German, it would be pronounced Mareenburg.
>>
>>51691434
There are other germanic languages than german.
>>
>>51691434

No, Mar-ee-enburg would be the German pronounciation.
>>
>>51691311
The one I've started questioning myself about is Tilea.
I've been pronouncing it 'Till-ea'. mainly because it has the same sounds as 'Italy' but in the wrong order.
But if Tylos is pronounced 'Tie-loss', then people from Tylos would be 'Tie-leans'. Which would fit.

When I was a kid, I pronounced Skaven as 'Skavven'. As in 'ravenous'.
I still like that pronunciation. It's more... ideophonetic? Not sure if that's the right term.
>>
>>51691448
But german or dutch would be the best fitting languages.
>>
>>51691609
It's only natural to pronanunce things after your own language.

All of that comes from the first three editions of WHFB, you'll have to dig up the pdf files for those online.

The WFRP book I was referring to, in case you are interested, is a "lost" book which sets the groundwork for Yamato (known as Nippon in WHFB) but was ultimately canceled by GW for unknown reasons. I have a link here but I don't know if it's the most updated/recovered version of it out there: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B63rIuFhh29eZWNkMGIyMzEtYWViYi00M2Q4LWE5MjgtOGIyYTU1Njg2ZmIw/view

Archaon lost humiliatingly and Valten died different. His host broke apart and fell to infighting.
>>
>>51693191
Nope. It's a parallel universe. It's and End Times scenario without Archaon. Instead they have an actually competent guy in charge who gets Dark Elves and Greenskins to join him somehow.
>>
>>51693284
Basically it makes Archaon look like an armless failure. So they retconned it so that it never happened.

>>51693332
They never found Valten's body, though.
>>
>>51693332

So really apart from Valten being different it's not incompatible.

GW has retconned stuff in the past. I think SoC still happened in the ET timeline.

>>

>>
>>51693414

>>

I think he just kinda went back to the Chaos Wastes feeling like a loser and he wasn't talked about much more.
>>
>>51693462
I'd like to think the Chaos Gods tormented him for all eternity in some suitably ironic way.
>>

Greyjoy has agriculture much like Sparta did, actually: run entirely by slaves (well, "thralls," as the Ironborn call them).
>>
>>51693450
He retreated to the Brass Keep, apparently, but nothing had been heard from him since.
>>
>>51693451
AFAIK that sort of stuff was handled by slaves, which is exactly how the dark elves do it

It's probably meant for just Sylvania, since the symbol seems to be associated with the place. Could also be that vampires tend to actually have their skeletons bear such symbols because they both suck blood and are creatures of the night.

I miss the old Grave Guard, myself. A bit more generic looking, sure, but it also meant a little more room for kitbashing. I only really see them brought up when people want undead Bretonnians these days.

Goblins who overindulge in magic mushrooms slowly turn into shaman shrooms. This suggests that Orcoid mushrooms can alter your genetic makeup, and goblins are especially susceptible owing to their partially fungal physiology.

In another thread I suggested that perhaps an isolated and desperate population of humans were forced to eat Orcoid mushrooms. Doing so over several generations slowly altered their genetic makeup until they became Half-Orcs.

Sparta ended up becoming a backwater by the time of Alexander the Great that he wouldn't even accept into his growing empire, and a tourist attraction by Roman times.

The only reason they endured so long among the Greek city states was because no one really wanted to wipe another city out, and Sparta was respected for its military might. But it was too xenophobic to control the Delian League after defeating Athens, and couldn't change with the times.

Nah, they've absolutely got the basics of food production taken care of. Depending on how large you read the islands as (I heard somewhere it's essentially supposed to be a smashed up Ireland), they've actually got enough land to have a more-or-less stable pop.
The issue is that their land is pretty poor, so they seldom have much in the way of a food surplus. They do have tons of easily accessible metals, hence being good weapons-makers. Basically, they're supposed to be a recipe for a fantasy raiding culture.
Also, it's important to remember they were at their height when all the other kingdoms were divided and at war with each other. United Westeros repeatedly punked them. Most of the "WE DO NOT SOW" crap is just that: boasting about an age long past that was probably much more complicated than the Greyjoys like to pretend.

That does make sense - why would the Strygos empire be formed out in unfertile land? And there are at least a couple rivers, it should be fertile enough.

Though it's also about as likely that the Badlands were indirectly affected by the curse that turned Nekhara into desert.

Besides, Estalia needs an equivalent to flagellants or milita or such. They don't necessarily strike me as the professional armies kind like Tilea or (kind of) the Empire, but more feudal like Bretonnia, but with just about every soldier having a little experience or at least martial discipline thanks to constant infighting or southern threats, and Myrmidia worship.

It does seem odd how most elves seem to only fall to Slaanesh if that's mentioned at all. Wouldn't Tzeentch be just as seductive, if not Khorne or Nurgle in their own ways?
>>
>>51702178
>>Tzeentch
They have Hoeth and their own deep understanding of magic.
>>Khorne
Khaine is their war god and one they prefer to worship in private and before a battle.
>>Nurgle
Elves live for a very long time and have magic that can cure deadly wounds, debilitating disorders, etc.

Basically Slaanesh is the only one who can offer them anything, that being the unparalleled titillation of their senses. The other three don't have much on elves.
>>
>>51702223
Tzeentch would provide a quick fast-track to sorcerous power if they were willing to risk it - in the span of years rather than centuries. And even then, his focus on scheming and manipulation might be useful in High Elf society, or at least in keeping other races in their place.

Khorne and Nurgle have far weaker arguments, sure, but I could see an elf falling to Khorne in a desperate bid for martial might in a moment of need, or to Nurgle when they need survivability or endurance, or are despairing at the bleakness of their future.
>>
>>51702847
I don't think it's impossible for an elf to fall to any of the four brothers, but they're far less likely to worship Slaanesh's siblings. Elves simply don't need a fast track to anything, they have so much time that they can afford to get wrapped up in staring at a painting for a week. Humans have to have that hustle and bustle, and Skaven are just too short lived to think about more than the moment.

By and large they recognize the dangers of Chaos as only the Dark Elves use Dhar and (sometimes) worship Chaos gods. It's just that, prior to the 8th edition fuck up, the elves were missing that part of their pantheon. They had gods of war, healing and magic and with pleasure sorely lacking in their lives, especially at a time when the world was at its most boring, Slaanesh got a foothold with a race that find it very hard to resist what he can give them.
>>
>>51702847
>Tzeentch would provide a quick fast-track to sorcerous power if they were willing to risk it
that's not much of an issue for an elf. They aren't in much of a rush and can afford the patience of long study.

Humans do not have that comfort.

Wouldn't the increasingly dangerous world make a few elves go 'maybe we should get ready now instead of later?'

I'm not trying to discount arguments, but it seems odd that elves seem totally irresistible to most of the Chaos gods. Then again, Dwarves never seem to fall to any of them, with Hashut being the main deity of the Chaos Dwarves more by desperation than choice.
>>
>>51703142
They'd realize the boost wouldn't be worth it. Has signing your life to a Chaos god ever worked out?

Dwarfs have a resistance to magic and elves have a deep understanding of it. They fought hard in the first incursion and lost a great deal along the way. It would be incredibly foolish to let a devil inside your house simply because he might help you in the short run.

The major difference is that Elves don't make deals in life they'd have to pay for in the Afterlife.

Elves are not as easily tempted as Humans are with promises of long life and quick power, and are not as fast to damn their soul by binding it to a chaos god.

Elves do everything in life they can to keep their soul away from Chaos and try to steer it into the reach of their guardian gods.

Even the Dark Elves get cozy with Khaine and Ereth Khial, hoping to be caught by them before Slaanesh can get their whiff.

Only the ones that intentionally seek the company of Slaanesh damn their souls to an eternity of Chaos by actively seeking it out. it's a small minority even among Dark Elves, but happens to some rare cases of High Elves too.

Humans aren't really that aware of the dangers of the Afterlife, in life, they are usually very careless, some are smart enough to turn to sorcery, locking their soul to the mortal realm, probably better than having Nurgle or Slaanesh get their hands on it.

seeing how it's an elven champion killing a norscan leader/hero, in tow with Lions of Chrace and a fucking Battlemage, I suppose it's an elite unit of elves cutting a bloody path into a mediocre assembly of chaos fodder to achieve some tactical objective.

that doesn't mean it's that one sided on the entire frontline, but such a scenario playing out isn't too outlandish, elves certainly have a better command structure and force organisation that would allow for such precise deployments and pushes. If we're saying they're the same SPECIES, then maybe. They can probably still breed with regular dwarfs.
But then beastmen can still breed with humans, and that doesn't make beastmen human.

We've talked about how a Mordheim style skirmish game would have been superior to AoS, but how would you go about utilizing rare units, special units, lords and heroes?

I'm convinced this is Jervis Johnson's magical realm. He was a very fluffy gamer who didn't really care about tournaments and wanted a very loose skeleton for people to use. Also I think GW effectively wanted to axe the rules department to save money.

Now I don't give a fuck about tournaments either but most people want a finished game with points because we don't have weeks to spend fine tuning each others armies in a gentleman's agreement. Thank fuck Priestly made him put points in Black Powder or that would have been another disaster.

I get that the Old World is supposed to be the focus of all the action. But why even bother having the Southlands or Cathay if they're never going to get fluffed out? They may as well be blank spots on the map.
>>
>>51710910

GW pretty much never intended to fluff them out. They put them in for the handful of people who wanted to create their own fantasy factions.

Same with Halflings, they don't do much but it doesn't hurt to include them.

>>51710910
Tomb Kings share the North Africa portion of the Southlands.

You have to think of it in terms of an outsider looking in. To the casual observer, the Empire is a massive state with a unified army lead by an all powerful emperor. That isn't the case as the states that make up the Empire are kingdoms in their own right and form a loose confederation. It is possible the East is similar to this, with Cathay looking like one huge nation but is possibly a patchwork of feuding kingdoms.

Out of universe, it was about money and how many armies the game could support without one or more turning into Chaos Dwarfs. Having a loyal fanbase but just too small to continually update.

North America has the Druchii, the Dunmer Druchii (read the Malus Darkblade novels, they're assholes), beastmangs, and the Hung.

The Far East has unique beastmangs, oni-ogres, chinks, Indians, and Japs.

Southlands has pygmies, lizfags, Arabyans, and Nehekharans. Also, an Imperial colony.

Lustria has lizfags and amazons, as well as colonies of Tileans, Estalians, and vampires.

Albion has picts.

I imagine it's somewhere in one of the WFRP 2E books but what was the overall effect of the Storm of Chaos on the world? The north of the Empire was devastated, where did all the refugees go? What effect did they have on the places they took refuge in? Is Kislev even still there?
>>
>>51712037
Sigmar's Heirs. It's set almost immediately after the war's end. The North and East got fucked hard and the refugees fled south and west. Kislev is still around but Erengrad is a smoking ruin.

The way I GMd this was an population 'boom', specifically in places like Carroburg, which jumped almost four times its previous population. In the year in which my players went to Carroburg the refugees had settled in for the long haul and were reluctant to go back to northern Middenland or Hochland. Even years after the Elector Counts of the devastated provinces were hard up for help in retaking their lands and resettling their people, as the other Elector Counts were getting too rich off this new displacement for them to want to help, and with the Emperor seemingly gone from the public eye he wasn't there to force the issue.
>>
>>51712037
Here's what it says about the Storm of Chaos:

>Middenheim is now a shattered remnant of its former glory, having suffered much destruction during the invasion known as the Storm of Chaos. Its people cling to existence, eking out their lives in the halfruined city, while cultists, Beastmen, Skaven and even groups of Orcs and Goblins continue to prey on the populace from the broken ruins and dark catacombs.
>All of you grew up listening to stories of the Great War Against Chaos. The tale of Magnus the Pious and his victory over the armies of Chaos is well known. While there have been wars and threats in the 200 years since, there has been nothing on that scale. Until now. This year the Chaos Lord Archaon invaded the Empire with five mighty armies. They swept down from the Chaos Wastes, ranks filled with mutant warriors, nightmarish monsters, and power-mad sorcerers. Flagellants and other prophets of doom declared these the End Times. And as these armies pillaged and burned their way through the northern provinces of the Empire, it was easy to believe.

Kislev is definitely still there. There are quests and campaigns set there.
>>
>>51712138
>>51712159
What about other nations? Did estalia, TIlea or Bretonnia have to deal with refugees? Did they even get effected by the invasion?
Did the Tomb Kings prepare an army for conquest?
>>
>>51712214
Bretonnia declared an errantry war. Presumably they lost a lot of promising young men in the northern Empire, and it's like some decided to stay and "do their duty," that is, stake out claims in areas with no noble authority.

This bodes particularly ill since Mallobaude is preparing to launch his civil war.

Estalia and Tilea didn't take part in the Storm, proper, though the Empire and Marienburg had been hiring mercenaries from those kingdoms like never before. I doubt refugees made it that far south, or wanted to settle in Bretonnia if Reikland is next door. Bretonnia's coastline was raided as were its settlements by beastmen, though most of their fighting was done in the Empire by the Errantry War first and then the veteran knights bringing up the rear.

If Estalia and Tilea were affected any it would have been by Settra reclaiming a lot of his old territory, but as I recall he went as far north as Nagashizzar and stopped, unwilling to go into the fortress, and Nagash unwilling to step out.

I managed to roll a Human campfollower who plans on going into spy. I also managed to roll suave and luckas character traits. The only flaw is that my character has a huge nose.

How are some ways I'd go about disguising myself or hiding my huge nose?

This is 2nd edition by the way
>>
>>51714449
There are disguise kits for you to buy which will allow you to alter your appearance a bit. Make up, blackface ink, puddy. There are also large hoods that can be used to hide your face entirely.

But a large nose would be hard to hide if you're looking to have your face still shown, so you might want to look into some experimental surgery.

>>

The SoC book was only 6th edition, as by 7th edition the war was over. Likely the sources for 7th are mentions of what happened after as a result of the Storm. Such as the return of Volkmar the Grim as Grand Theoginist. His predecessor, and successor, Esmer was 'persuaded' to leave Altdorf so that Volkmar could take his place as the head of the cult once again.

Most of it was in the White Dwarf magazines leading up to the event. The army books had their plot points but in WD you had stories like Luthor Huss leading an army of fantatical Sigmarites along with Valten to Altdorf to demand that Karl Franz abdicate and allow Valten to assume the throne, the belief being that he was the reincarnation of Sigmar.

I don't know if the White Dwarf link is in the OP links anymore, hopefully someone will post them.
