Hey

I ran a dubs contest a littke over a month ago and the winning post wanted lady here to be gray all over.

I think it came out alright, this was my first real experience with nmm and the whole model was done with just three colors: black, white and gray. A cool exercise!

The model suffers from not having a focal point but that's unavoidable given the choice of colors.

Cover the model. But when you're spraying you should never be fixed on the model. Quick sweeps across, starting before the model and ending after so you don't get too much on there.

Need some advice, /wip/.

I'm scratchbuilding a model with long hair and an overcoat. I'm going to try and build sort of a Heavy Metal kinda guy. Obviously this means the coat will be black.

But I can't think of a proper hair color that isn't ALSO black, and I'm worried how this will look in miniature.

My only idea right now is to do a heavy drybrush of the coat in red, to generate the impression of a dark red coat instead of straight black, then drybrush the hair with a soft grey to illustrate light bouncing off of black hair.

But it might not generate enough contrast. What do y'all think?

This is more /ArmyIP/, but I am working on my first airbrush heavy army. I posted some earlier ones in /40kg/ and they were not super pleased by the green.

The idea for this army is a super quick and easy paint scheme to practice my airbrushing. I am new to airbrushing and have already learned so much from this small army alone, it's been greatly satisfying.

Man that does look good. I went for the white "dot" in the corner, which is on the other side (visible in this pic).

I really like your way but it might look silly now with the dot there....
>>
>>51487559
not that guy, but i'd go over the dot and go with his method. I feel like the reason it just looks like overspray right now is because of how dark the actual lightsource is.
>>
>>51487608
sorry, worded that in a confusing way, the lens, where the light source should be coming from, looks too dark, or too similar in color to the actual glow on the hull. the white/lighter color in the middle would go a long way to helping it.
>>
>>51487618
Yeah that does make sense.

I should do that, this scheme is just beyond lazy. I was going for a crazy quick scheme to get onboard with the tau cheese wagon. I've painted most of the battleforce and an extra squad of pathfinders in like a week, it's nuts.

I'll go try it.

i suppose kind of like this. Necrons with the glow effect might be worth looking into because they typically go with green on a metallic surface like yours.
>>
>>51487096
That kind of thing can be caused by a multitude of factors. I'm sure you're already realising that airbrushing is a balancing act of paint viscosity, air pressure, distance, ambient heat and humidity. You're pretty lucky that it kind of works with your sort of arctic theme though.

>>
>>51487696
>airbrushing is a balancing act of paint viscosity, air pressure, distance, ambient heat and humidity.
Yeah you're telling me. It's nuts. And I am finding ever citadel air paint is a slightly different viscosity as well.

I have had great success switching to this new nozzle cap. The one of the left is the one i am using now, the one I was using before was like the one in the centre but less concave.

Any pro-tips on nozzle caps?
>>
>>51487733
really I should just be less lazy and put white back in the airbrush and do it that way, but that means one more paint change and brush cleanout, which is annoying.

My airbrush setup is currently super inconvenient. I need to switch paints into dropper bottles ASAP. Waiting for them to arrive from Canada though :(

Reposting my question from the previous thread

For War of the Ring figures (board game) I want to mark them with a oil-based (acrylic) marker like

https://www.amazon.com/Elmers-Painters-Opaque-Markers-WA7518/dp/B001CE5I0A

I'd like to add colored stripes around the figures, and maybe highlight the symbols/flags with a marker.

Now... is this a good idea if I plan to properly paint those figures someday? Will the pain come off so I can prime it, and paint it?
>>
Not totally happy with this pose, still needs some cleaning.
>>
>>51488011
why not use acrylic? acrylic would be fine to do what you're after. oil paints, i think, would smudge off if you handle them
>>
>>51488031
Looks very un-dynamic. There's static poses and there's *dead* static poses, this is the latter.
>>
>>51488051
I used only a small amount of cement for this to keep it -breakable- and fiddly, I can't quite pull off an exaggerated anime pose with its limited articulation. Tempted to just cut at the joints and start over.
>>
>>51488036
Sorry, derp. From the amazon page
> Filled with real acrylic paint
I thought that would do the job.

Sorry for the stupid questions but how I remove the marker from the figure when/if I decide to properly paint it?

nah, my bad, i thought you were talking about using some kind of actual oil paint and not an acrylic paint in a pen, i'm not sure how it works being oil based, though. water based acrylics come off with standard cleaning solutions like dettol or simplegreen. you probably wont have any issues, im sure theyll do fine.

I like the more golden tone on the right better.

I'd forget about weathering with silver. You need something darker as contrast against the yellow. Try brown or at the very least a dark gunmetal.

I think the blacklining on the panels would look better with a brown of sorts too, the black makes it look very stark and cartoony. If that is what you are going for go with black, my personal preference would be something less extreme.

Color theory 101 says purple could be a good color to shade yellow, so if you got a glaze you could try that on one of the testers and see how it comes out. Obviously you'll want to be subtle with it, but if done correctly I imagine it could look better than a brown or black.

blue is an interesting idea, would work better if it was less saturated though.
Make the highlights on that near white/super pale skin and wash the hands and feet with black to simulate frostbite to give it some kick.

Other than that the bottom right with pink limbs looks neat, imo.

You don't need a respirator necessarily, but you should be using a disposable face mask at the very least. The acrylics are non-toxic, but as anonymous said the aerosolized particles are microscopic. If you breathe them in, they get in your lungs and just fucking settle there. Not poisonous but an definite source of respiratory problems.

Highlight the edges of all the black spots with a dull greyish/blue then highlight again with the same light blue you used for the legs. Done and done.

Look at poisonous tree frogs and you will see a ring of color that outlines their black "spots."

The best part about dwarves is that they are simple enough that you can cast them with a 1 part mold.

Learn to resize and crop your images, it takes a mere two seconds in Paint.

The mini looks extremely flat, you could try to drybrush the skin, or at least it needs washes all over. And are these sprue connections? Trim your shit before you assemble it.

>>51497943
Doesn't Blood bowl use cirlces?

Do you have any kind of brush control my man? And what do you mean by "everywhere on the skin"? I'd try for a white myself, probably tinted with a bit of green, but then again I don't do orks and have never really painted with green. Maybe look up an ork painting guide online even.

>>51497964

If it's not both, don't bother posting.
>>
>>51498079
Why are you so close-minded? Why not just experiment with drybrushing it on instead?

I would recommend putting washes all over it first, then drybrushing that lighter green over the skin for a nice tabletop quality.

So my friend just gave me a Harlequin troupe set for my birthday and I need to put these altogether and paint them.
I heard someone say that it's a lot easier to use stencils to do all the diamond patterns they tend to have. I'm pretty good at stenciling and have a fair bit of spray paint. What would be a good material to cut from for these, since it looks like they wrap around the legs a bunch? And would high quality spray paint (like Montana Gold) be good for these in place of an airbrush?
>>
Is masking and airbrushing hard tank camouflage harder than freehand airbrushing soft camo patterns?

I'm gonna airbrush my first tank today and while I much prefer hard camo I don't want to bite off more than I can chew.

Yes they do, but the game is based on 1 inch squares anyways, and the corners help with keeping the model on his face/back for injuries. Tails like to roll the model to the side and we forget of he was stunned or just knocked down often.

Let's say that I want to sculpt myself some custom mounts for my IG Rough Riders, since there's no actual model for them that isn't a terrible metal mongol. I'm not concerned with the riders themselves because that's an easy conversion from stock Guardsmen, just the mounts. My sculpting skills are...okay, but I don't work quickly, which limits my options.

The mounts probably won't be very complicated. I was actually thinking of doing giant snakes, I saw some snake minis and it seemed like a really neat idea but I couldn't find any suitable for putting guys on. About the simplest shape you can imagine, just with some scales and things detailed on.

What would be the best material to try and make them from? I have a big stick of offbrand green stuff and also some epoxy putty that I think is effectively the same thing. I have materials and resin for casting from other projects, so ideally I'm only going to make two, maybe three varieties and then make a mold and cast as many as I actually want.

Should I just use the green stuff/putty and only add a little bit at a time so the curing doesn't outrun my ability to sculpt? Or is there a better option? I can't use clay because it you can't really make molds of it unless it's fired and I have no way to do that.
>>
>>51499637
You could probably pull some Warhammer Fantasy horses off ebay, friend.

Shit, give me a day or two to catalogue this crate of bitz I've just inherited and I'll sell you some. What country are you in?
>>
>>51499663
Oh, if I wanted to horses there's a dozen places I could get them. But I want some really funky mounts for these guys, hence wanting to make them myself.

If I could have found any giant snakes that weren't either the wrong size or WAY too expensive, I'd probably have just bought them.
>>
>>51499637
I'm having a hard time imagining how one would ride a snake.
Though you could take some inspiration from the lord on slaanesh steed and do it that way.

If you want to go the diy route, I'd say do a body with saddle and rider legs if you don't have anyhting you can use for that and do the head as separate piece. After casting that you can can turn it or convert it to have an open mouth to add som variation to the steed without too much hassle.

And with GS you should always work in layers. It's an additive process you cannot do the whole thing in one go.

There are also other minis you could use as mounts without the need to sculpt the mini yourself.

So recently I came into a crate of bitz full of fantasy dark elf parts and I have requisitioned them for my Renegades and Heretics project.

The army is going to consist of multiple cults, gangs and units amalgamating together into a single warband, so I'm going to allow for some differentiation and customisation per unit. This is both to make better use of the bitz I already have rather than lumping money on hundreds of one part, and also to really personalise every element of the army.

But what the fuck can I do with these faggot boots? Like, they look goofy as fuck on dudes and hypersexualised on chicks, and also goofy as fuck. There are some female torsos in here, but I don't want to use them because armoured boob plates are a little retarded.

Does anyone have any suggestions for what I could pair them with, or ways I could modify them (i.e. adding armour plates/kneepads) to make them look less like stripper boots?
