My political map of 'not europe' for my setting:
>>
>>51424830
I like your use of classic weird races like blemmyes, arimaspi and panoti. Bit disappointed that they share land with so much of the classic guys. Would've not been mad at some goblins and elves here and there, but they completely steal the show from the interesting guys. Would've loved to see some more weird races instead, like the cynophali, the astomi or the sciapods. Some are a bit goofy, but I'm sure you'll be able to make them rad considering you somehow managed to make panoti that are not ridiculous.

Also I love your style. Would play regardless of any complaint.

>>51425771
I still don't feel satisfied, it makes me think that it invites people to not give the "new" races a chance if it's to be played in a game. But, like I tried to say, it's a minor complaint, the setting looks great. Even without weird races like blemmyes it would have some interesting/funny nations.

>>
>>51426012
To make not!christianity more interesting and less recognizable, I made it literal that we christians worship an undead dude. So everything that is related to the religion is gonna be pretty grim. Fits well with the theme of the Ahriman (not to mention that christianity was the main rival of zoroastrianism for a bunch of centuries).

I'm a bit of a slavboo so there's no bias against the russians at all, but in a setting where the protagonists are based in middle eastern empires the Russian Empire is the perfect threatening dark power. They're the main colonial power in the area, specially in persia and central asia. Also remember that from the perspective of the setting Russians come from the northern steppe, not the west, the same direction where Ahriman and Genghis Khan (often identified with Prester John) come from.

>>51426095

Made this for a homebrew Symbaroum setting, probably going to redo it properly in Photoshop at some point.
>>
>>51426443
I know that you probably use photoshop (or gimp) but what I don't get is how you can get the colours so crisp and blend in with eachother.
>>
>>51426453
I use more of a bizarro not!islam where Allah and Muhammad are the same for my main religion, although it will probably hard to see it as that for someone without some knowledge of the religion. I use zoroastrianism more to define 'how the world is' rather than 'what people believe'.

I don't discard having a small community of followers of 'old religions' though. But that belongs to future steps of worldbuilding.
>>
>>51426710
I'm using paintnet, I take two relatively similar colors (for example, a mild brown and a mild green), take one with the dropper tool and reduce its opacity/transparency to 30-60%, then mix that with the second color to get something in between. Often I make multiple layers of these to get smooth transitions without having actual antialiasing, this makes it much easier to do huge edits without redoing the coloring each time.
>>
>>51426452
Gosh that is a beautiful map.

Shit son, at least you did it by hand, thats rare.

>>
>>51426425
I would consider reducing the amount of towns and villages, since its pretty packed for the scale you are going for.

I would remove the hills that you have lined that one mountain range with, it looks a little weird.

coast to coast rivers should also be avoided, rather make it two separate rivers coming from the mountains going to each their separate shore.

Lastly i would use the remove sculpt tool at the smallest size and cut slightly around the water edges to give it a more natural formation to it.
>>
slightly offtopic, but is there any kind of village/town name generator?
>>
>>51426598

>>

If you're going for stuff like Goldridge, Fangmoor, Bluetower, a random generator is a very bad idea.

If you want non-english names, fantasynamegenerator website has tons of things you can use, I'd recommend twisting and modifying the names that come out.
>>
>>51426930
Yeah, Inkarnate. It got an update a few days ago which removed/replaced all the old assets. The new version produces results such as >>51425721 which tend to be better for regional maps but make for terrible world maps.

>>51428811

There are a bunch of resources and tutorials that are just photoshop filters and then a little legwork with mountain ranges or whatever, but even just doing upside down V's would look better than most of this copy-paste style-devoid bum

Maybe its just me, but even on a map where someone really seems to know how to use inkarnate and make it look good, I cant stand how 99% of all of the towns are the same three little buildings, and the map is dotted with a hundred of the same little house silhouette, and half of the trees are all the same little doodle.

Even if you dont have a tablet you can hand draw a few different mountains and create stamps for all of them so you can make a dickload of different little doodles, then stamp them apart from eachother so it doesn't look as copy paste as the four different mountains you get with inkarnate.
Then do dots or something for insignifigant towns, a little rook for forts, then hand draw silhouettes that are styled after the architecture you have in mind for the city instead of just >this sticker has a shitload of houses so I'll use it for literally every big city on this map

It's intentional to a degree. There's a decent amount of original concept countries, especially in the east, but I was going for a not!Europe look when drawing it. Since I'm making a digital version soon is there anything you would say I should change to make it a little less oblivious?

Very true, especially since I won't move onto another country until I've finished writing up most of this ones history and city/town/village/location knowledge.

Might be able to finish a fucking continent by the time I die.
>>
>>51430383
Not really, just keep in mind that its abig landmass with a massive country in the north-east, an ocean in the south splitting it, whose opening is tiny gap. I guess, if you don't want it to be too obvious, change the general shape in some way, or orient it somehow different? I don't know, not an expert.

Also, just noticed that your UK actually has a Kent, so there's that.

If you want names that mean something, no advice.
If you want fantastic sounding names, random generate them.

>>51430822
I'd suggest that you use a random name generator in conjunction with looking at names that look kinda nice but aren't quite there. Then change them up slightly, or take the first syllable or the last and stick a new one in there to make it better.

I try to actually figure out the history of the name first, much like it happens in real world. First thing I wonder is if I want it to be based in understandable language (english or your native), or if you want to invent a whole fictional world. In general, if possible, I prefer using entirely made up words as little as possible, as they almost always end up sounding B'grade and distracting, not to mention they are frequently difficult to remember and end up surprisingly indistinct.

Part of that is asking myself what am I (the author) trying to convey through the name. After all, names are like any other part of your fiction, just another channel to communicate. The most common answer is: I'm trying to communicate (some aspects of) the place's history and cultural significance. Just like in real world, names emerge organically, through some form of local or global history and necessity. They embody elements of pragmatical necessity, local distinctive features, but also coincidence, or even perhaps personality of the historical figures who established them. Naming traditions can mirror local customs, religion, aesthetical preferences.

Well it's basically what the name says. Maritime thalassocracy based around trade and piracy, but ruled by priests and fundies from the inland mountains of the main island who easily conquered the capital in a moment of weakness. So now you got fundie pirates.

It helps that they don't share religion with any of their neighbours, which justifies assaults on any stranger ship be it foe or not.

(sorry for the delay, got distracted)
When it seems necessary (either because I have too high density of "english" based terms in one region, or when I want to communicate that the particular region has been named by particularly strange culture), I "invent" new words by looking into particular real-world inspirations for the culture that proposed that name. I look into real-world languages that I can associate with that culture (like my nomadic tribes being inspired by mongolians, so I'll look into mongolian, or my empire inspired by greco-indian nations, so I look into sanskrt...) Then I'd go through their dictionaries (google translate can do), looking for words that seem appropriate (for a city build on a major rocky formation, I looked up a word for "tooth", for an instance). It usually takes several tries to find a word that sounds "right". Then I just do some small adjustments to the spelling so that it's not TOO immediately identifiable, and I get my name.

Oh god, I always get asked this. I really need to make a tutorial.

I use photoshop. The gist of it comes down to this: I use actual heightmaps on a greyscale layer, set up that layer as it's own color channel and use Filter > Render > Lighting Effects and apply the new color channel I created as the texture.

This gives me realistic looking shading that I can use as a base for the landshape.

I've also been playing with creating non-shaded relief maps, which I like better for what I'm trying to do.

I had a series of threads a while back where I asked for people to submit their maps to me and I'd make them a non-shaded relief map.

The attached image is one of those maps.

>>
>>51433984
I'm a lazy drawfag, anon, so the shape of a coastline isn't an issue for me. (In fact I'm so lazy my team only had some shitty sketches by now.) Isles were made by drawing a blob of land and erasing it with a tiny brush until I was satisfied with the result.
Also magnifying glass is really useful.

That tutorial is fantastic. My method is pretty different but that tutorial would probably give you the same result with less work.

Replace the steps where you paint in mountains with actual heightmaps and you'd end up with a result just like mine.

I get my heightmaps from a few different places. World machine is my favorite, you can create some really cool landmasses, export the heightmaps and work with them that way.

I have used actual SRTM data in the past but it's more work than it's worth.

Google images is also great for finding heightmaps.

My DM made a little inkarnate map and it serves its purpose but I felt like remaking it in photoshop to fix it up a little. It's nothing special but I kind of like it. I once drew up a map of the Mystery Lake level in The Long Dark. You explore a lot and it helped to get my bearings and I didn't want to just google one and cheat. I explored a bit and got it more accurate as I went along, and this is the 'final' one where I was pretty sure of it and made it larger. But that's the only map I've ever drawn now that I think about it.

Before modern colonialism, "low" and "high" generally referred to things that were lower or higher, not things that were more southern or northern. See for example upper and lower lorraine.
>>
>>51435898

Yea the geographic stuff seems to be key. A true artist can make a horrible map with bad rivers etc, and a scribble on notepaper can look a lot better with good geography and an interesting design.

Luckily inkarnate helps good designers with fewer skills make good looking maps.

Ummm here's another I didn't post before. I might have a few more, let me keep looking. Not sure how geographical it is, but it's really important to get things right initially before you go ham on details I guess.

Postapocalyptic CK2 is even better. Elder Kings and Game of Thrones are the top of the line fantasy mods, but they're awkward and overburdened mechanically, and a lot of the richness of the setting just doesn't come through. After the End does a way better job of conveying its flavor, even though there's a lot of minor religions still in need of more content.

Thanks, that's simple and concise.

Would you reccomend I stick to this scheme for larger landmasses or should I split it into multiple forest "clouds"?

>>51442683
for an amazon jungle do it so it touches the rivers and actually creates their borders, like the negative space is river so you can imagine the jungle hanging over the banks and shit

then for when it nears a coastline have it stop abrubptly to turn into a sandy beach, or if it turns into a marsh or just back into regular forest it should just sort of peter out and break up as you mix whatever decals you use for marshland or grassy fields with little jungle clouds like you said.
>>
>>51442683
Depends on thickness of the forest. If you want to indicate that in this forest are some paths or hills or whatever, I would recommend multiple clouds. If the forest is really dense and hard to get through, I would use a single cloud.
>>
>>51442640
This reeks of delusion.
>>
>>51442711
to clarify the first line I meant no clouds at all, apart from a few clearings and valleys, but they should be holes in the overall cloud shape, it should still be one big blob divided by rivers only.

in my opinion, at least, but I have a huge boner for impossibly thick jungles that swallow people and civilizations

These are great.

I'm working on a Darwinistic Nightmare Island (aka Heavily Forested Australia where everything is constantly evolving to kill you more efficiently) and am looking to make the fauna get thicker and more Amazon like the further inwards you get (civilization, or whatever is left of it, on the outskirts, savegary and cannibal tribes /Lizard people inside).

That is, until you reach the Mountain towards the middle of the Island, sourrounded by a hilly area that acts as the hunting grounds for the Wyverns that roost on top of it.

With this info, what river system would you reccomend?
>>

I always figured it was a combination of the caves being so large and humid that there was the occasional bit of rain, and a throwback to their time on the surface for 'tradition'.

Question, when you guys make your maps do you tend to make the map first and then plan out things that can happen in each of the marked locations, or do you plan out a whole bunch of encounters and role-playing opportunities and then build the map around it?

Right now I'm doing the second approach and while it means that every marked location will have something for the players to do there guaranteed, it does make my maps look a little sparse.

Pic unrelated

make the mountain be a circular mountain range with a valley inside of the circle that is literally just a titanic lake, slowly trickling out by way of a thousand waterfalls of pristine unadulterated beauty, crashing into the rocks below amidst a sea of teeth and survival instincts and flowing into rivers winding away from the center of the island

but I'm a sucker for rule of cool geography

I knew first what locations I want to make. Main location, some cold places, some jungles, some deserts, mountains for dwarves, forests for elves. Basic stuff actually, typical cliches with untypical elements, as the team I'm playing with right now is pretty new to RPGs. I had to take into consideration the description of places from the history of characters my players made (cities, villages etc.), then I had to think about how easy/hard to get to each of this places should be. Also the history of the world I prepared was a big influence.
This picture is the close-up of the main location from >>51433913 I'm working on right now.
>>
>>51442839
I make the world first and then plan things that can happen, but that's because I worldbuild for fun not for DMing.

I'm flexible tho. If I need a city here for my DMing and there wasn't one in my first map, now there's one.
>>
>>51442850
That's a magnificcent idea.

At the same time there's currently an ancient shrine of a long dead civilization resting beneath the mountain, waiting for the players to awaken the skeletal guardian remains from their slumber.

I dig the pristine water source and may build it into the mountain, but the inland sea might be too difficult to work into.
>>
>>51443070
when that happens have them uproot the lake above them, cascading water down through the hollow mountain pooling in the bottom, stopping the waterfalls immediately

so your party will have literally dehydrated a whole jungle by awakening these dudes, and then if they wipe out the whole civilization eventually as nature deals with this change, the inner mountain area can be a dank fucked up mirror to the outside jungle with like, big monster spiders and basically its all just this scene from king kong: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTWYQhTT388

and the jungle will starve and turn into like, a huge dead jungle swamp some shit

Looks really neat! Reminds me a little bit WoW. I'm intrigued about all those nations, all this stuff to discover... I'm jealous of your players.
I guess Chingoku is exotic China, Sutar is Arabian-like country, Kongoku and Niroku are Korean and Japanese, and Nordis is, well, Nordic one, but rest? Avalon is the "good guys" perhaps.
Only islands looks a little bit off - most of them looks like circles. And Straya reminds me of Australia, but I suppose it's on purpose. I like how Kush, Avalon, Niroku and Mikken looks like.
Please tell me more about this world, 9/10, would explore.

Its a feudal setting, in their own 13th century. Large kingdoms rule the landscape, and besides warring lordships and counties, the world is largely at peace.

The Continent of Estheria is a spectrum of European countries in the 13th century. Nordis and Falsen to the North, heavy Scandinavian influence. Arenhigh, and Rhen mountainous Germanic lands that are similar to Germany and Switzerland. Davros is based largely on Irish and Scottish folk lore, a misty foggy land of rolling hills and beautiful countryside. Avalon is the largest kingdom on the continent and is held by elves. It is a huge metropolitan area and the major seaport of the region. Kaspar and Gessin embody eastern Europe and the Slavic tradition. Mikken is a Grecko-Roman mediterranian nation and the primary culture exchange between Estheria and Kaladan.

Kaladan is a dry and arid continent that spans African style cultures and nations. In Kush, you find dense jungles and warring bush tribes of Orcs and Dragonborn. Sutar is a vast, unending desert with scattered oasis. Sahil, a savanna that serves as the home of many brutal and ruthless pirates. Letho is the cradle of life, the oldest civilizations are found here. Medin is the cradle of knowledge, and is based on ancient Arabic cultures, they are the pinnacle of mathematics and engineering, but an extremist religious movement of Drow seek to take power. Luxe is the cradle of Empires, with the world's oldest Empire, which once ruled the entire continent. It has a heavy Egyptian influence. The main seaport of the eastern lands, and the only land route to Xin Shou.

Xin Shou is a mysterious eastern land. Vishtar is a large country based on India, with lush rain forest, and many ancient temples buried in the trees. Nakala is a nation of barbarians and pirates, and is walled off from Chingoku. Chingoku is a strict and logical society of High Elves who value peace, logic, and zen above all else. They have also had black powder bombs and advanced engineering technology that they guard jealously. Niroku is the ancient enemy of Chingoku, an island based nation of High Elves that value valor, honor, and family above all else, they often raid seashore cities of Chingoku. Kongoku is the northernmost civilization of High Elves, and mostly isolate themselves from their Chingoku and Niroku brothers.

the world in general has been in contact for hundreds of years. All races are dispersed throughout the world, and thought racism is alive and well, society has become a bit of a melting pot, which brings with it its own issues and its own challenges.

The newly discovered lands of Straya and Lehua hint at a larger world out there to be discovered, and an ever expanding universe of people and races to meet and adventures to have.
>>
>>51444238
>>51444271
That's pretty cool. I think you forgot to say something about Cenka, and I wonder what's the difference between Nodis and Falsen, also Kaspar and Gessin. I guess that Gessin is more like Russia and/or East Europe, and Kaspar is rather a Central Europe.
What about Balkans? What is the most Persian-like country? Is Nakala inspired by Mongol Empire? I would gladly hear about Lehua Islands, too.
>>
>>51444238
>Switzerland mentioned
Time to celebrate
>>
>>51444367
Haha. Yes, Cenka is a foil to Avalon, both are very high fantasy feudal British kingdoms fighting for the lower peninsula of Avalon Bay, and sea access to Luxe and the east at large.

the Lehua Islands are an isolated chain of volcanic tropical islands located in the Lunaris ocean inhabited by strange seafaring elves, and colorful aromatic humanoid plants. They are influenced by Hawaiian culture and folk lore. They tell tales of even more foreign and wild lands far to the east, which are largely dismissed as rumors and myths. This is part of how I want to expand this setting. After a few campaigns here, I am going to skip to colonial era Cenka setting sail to the west to try to find a sea passage to Vishtar and Luxe without having to conquer Avalon, and discovering by accident the Americas.

Straya is a penal colony for Avalon. It began 100 years ago, and has since turned into a brave and bustling outback frontier society.

>>
>>51444503
oh my god you're a genius. It turns out that inkarnate didn't save it in an editable format (I thought it did?) so I'm currently redrawing it to look a bit less Dinosaury.

The basic concept behind the world is that it's a big battleground for the Elemental planes, they scrap it out over this continent and leave it utterly barren and lifeless, bits are flooded, mountains and volcanos have risen up everywhere. Then one-day some Gods show up in a pseudo-spaceship full of Mortals. The gods quickly begin building fortifications with magics the Elementals can't understand and towns and cities being to spring up about this spaceship inside a force-field. The half of the map that's green and full of life is where the Gods dwell, north of the mountains are the Elements who have struck a temporary truce to fight this common foe.

Thank you, that's nice to hear.
In fact one of my players made a character that was trained by retired ex-pirate, that hides on marshes. He doesn't know his master was once a great admiral, a legend that went on a dark path. He was teaching him about survival, cartography and stuff like that and told him many stories about his life as a pirate, but even more left untold.
The other said his parents moved to small dock town shortly before he was born, so he doesn't know his mother was a princess of a small island (the C shape island with a dot inside) and they had to run away because it was a forbidden love. What makes him a prince of this tiny kingdom.
So yeah, it's important, I kinda want they would explore this part of their history. Pic related.

You should make two versions, one with the grid, and one without the grid. Give the gridless one to your players.
>>
>>51445315
Good suggestion. I put there a grid to tell how many days it takes to go from the one place to the other, but they don't have to know it.

simple, but clear. I could give you the predictable rant about bifurcating rivers, but I imagine you've seen that a dozen times already if you're in this thread.

Here's a WIP depicting a kingdom in my setting.
Any tips or critics wanna make their voice heard?

The kingdom in question (Varantii) is located just to the north of the Imperial Consulate which is one of the most prosperous rump states from the Empire of the Tetrarchy which had a massive role in shaping the culture and geopolitical structure of the continent. The Imperial Consulate has taken upon itself the burden of upholding the imperial civilisation and have grown into an imperial might of their own.
Due to the Kingdom of Varantii's geographical location it has grown wealthy as a middleman in the trade between the imperial territories of old and the Wild North. As a result it's also a highly syncretic society with quite a bit of conflict between proponents of the southern, imperial way of life and the Old Way.

Was considering rewriting it as a science fantasy. Planet freezes over, civilization dies, magic returns, monsters return, nightmares return.
