MBW is the most reliable initiative aug in 5e, not the fastest.

MBW 5e gives no init dice at rating 1, and only +1d6 at rating 2 & 3. It does give +3 init and +1 reaction per rank. +12+1d6 is absolutely for flat, reliable initiative scores.

Contrast with Wired Reflexes, that gives +1 Reaction and +1d6 per rank = +3+3d6, and can take Reaction Enhancers for another +3. It has a wider range of potential than MBW, but sometimes you'll roll shit and end up worse than MBW.
>>
>>51401751

See if you can get Synaptic Acceleration or Boosted Reflexes + Drugs past your GM.

Question about how drugs and addiction work, chummers, because I can't make heads nor tails of this damn book.

Lets use cram as an example. It has an addiction rating of 4 and a threshold of 3.

I take a dose of cram and enjoy the bonus initiative. This starts the addiction timer, and sets the time limit at 7 weeks (11 - AR = 7). The addiction threshold is 3, and it's a psychological addiction (resisted with Logic + Willpower). Every week I go without using cram, the threshold for the addiction test falls by 1 - meaning after 3 weeks it has a threshold of 0 and it's impossible for me to fail.

But when do I start making addiction tests? If I make one as soon as I use the drug, the 'falloff' period is useless. If I don't make one until 7 weeks have passed, chances are pretty good I won't have to make one at all. My character has a Log + Wil pool of 8, which gives me about a 50% chance of passing the test on any given day, but I'd rather not risk it. Taking a week or two to cool down after a run would be much easier, if it's possible.

>>51401303

>>
>>51402313
At the end of week 7 you make the test. But remember that if at any point before the threshold, not only does the threshold go back up to 3, and it doesn't go down for that week.

So while Cram can be kept from being a problem if you can space out runs properly, something like Jazz or Kamikaze is harder or impossible to space out.
>>
Will we ever get an open world free-roam Shadowrun game?

No.
>>
>>51402473
Best doujin.
>>
>>51402738
Sometimes the best things come from the worst people.
>>
>>51402683
I figured. If I let the threshold go down to 0, does that reset the 7 week timer?

Also, changing the subject - since Rigger 5.0 stated that drones can only hold one magazine worth of whatever weapon they're armed with (unless you take the ammo bin modification, which I have no room for), can you manually reload a drone that's within arm's reach?

>>51402718

You're watchdogs on this one, Bring a heavy jacket and even heavier guns. Don't let the novacoke go anywhere.
>>
>>51402842
Yeah, if you can go three weeks without using, you're off the hook. But if at any point in those three weeks you use, back on the whole way.

So avoiding the tests can be a bit difficult if you use one drug and run more than once a month. If you can switch drugs around, that's a bit better. If you can afford pharmaceutical grade, even better.

Okay guys I need your help.

So one of the players I've been playing with for a couple years now has been having an increasingly hard time being consistent with being able to come to games. This is because he needs to work more hours, has family things and has a whole other friend group.

So for this next Shadowrun game I'm DMing I want to tell him that he has a lot going on and shouldn't be a part of it.

How can I do this in a way he wont get defensive or feel like its personal.

Are you talking about the -Essence Lost that healing spells with the Essence tag take? Becuase that's a no.

For the -1 per 2 full points of loss, I'd allow it to be bypassed if you didn't mind mucking with the implants. It's never going to be worse than what an Awakened/Emerged is going to get on normal treatment.

Only the implants can probably be repaired more easily than those special ratings.
>>
>>51403687
I don't think he's particularly wicked individual. Sure, it takes being a bit out there to put some of these things on a paper at all. But I think he's not... living his personal fantasies through it or anything and that his main motivation (besides feeding the fame that makes money) is the storytelling. Everything he does is never "just porn" there's always some undertones, there's always a story. He can do a twist right, turn whole story upside down in one page. And he has his reference and homages to a T. From vidya through history to international culture. Hell, the last time there's was a goddamn Frodo Baggins! It might sound like a stretch but I would compare him to Douman Sayman in those a way (ignoring the fact that one works mostly with simplistic sketchy style and the other with far more details). Both can do heartwarming and soulcrushing with equal ease. I think he would make excellent GM.
>>
>>51404230
Well, we know that his Dragon Quest stuff is basically part putting fantasies on the page.

Or at least wonderings on there.

Are there still drakes in 5e?

I'm trying to figure out what an undercover bodyguard for a troll gangster who's basically a modified Kaz Yakamura in a bastardized Ghost Cartels might look like. Two ganger PCs from different sets have put aside their past differences to kill Cassie Yang, the Fire Girl at the center of the tempo trade in Minneapolis, but they don't know how deep Horizon and Amazonian influence goes in this shit. They also don't know that the team's face is also being played by an Amazonian intelligence agent inside Ares. It's complicated. Anyways, I figured with the dragons and shit in Amazonia they might have a servitor of theirs do it.

The GM and I have been buds for a bit, and he was pretty clear that he wanted grounded characters for the game. He let the players come with whatever they wanted but warned that anyone too conspicuous would probably have a hard time of it. It was supposed to be a corp espionage campaign.

I'm not sorry for purposely getting someone killed for not listening and ruining the mood that was trying to be set. It would be different if he had thought out how he would play a pariah, but the player just walked up in broad daylight and said 'hi' to the group.

"Look dude, I'm going to be running the next game, and honestly I don't think you should join in, you just have to much on your plate what with family, and the other people you guys get together with. I can't help but notice that it's harder and harder for you to commit to game time, heck all of us have noticed, and personally I don't think you should let something like a game pull you away from what is important to you.

It doesn't mean I or the others don't want to hang out with you any more, in fact, we should see if we can't come up with something where it's less of an issue if one person shows up late or not at all, like board games, or a LAN. I know it sucks but I don't want to put added pressure on you to make you feel like you HAVE to show up, and I don't want myself and the others to lose time that we've committed because we have to sit around waiting for one person or another to finally arrive. This solution just works for everyone. Maybe if your schedule clears up in the future, and you for sure know you can make it to the games, there's always a chair open for you."

Something like that. Sprinkle relevant personal relationship stuff in where applicable.

There are simple and effective ways to do this. If a GM gives you a shopkeep or a fixer that you see regularly, then one day that person gets killed in a fight you could have prevented through mission choices, you'll feel the absence. All I can say is that it isn't something that should be forced, but very memorable when done well.

Alright, who the heck else would be Iwanako?

Someone else and I actually wrote up a long-ass time ago a story where Iwanako wound up at the academy with injuries from all the girls - car accident and missing parts of her legs (Emi), facial scarring and other injuries (Hanako), got glass in her eyes (Lily), ears blown out and vocal cords shredded (Shizune), hands mangled (Rin), and had to had her heart replaced (Hisao). Since her parents were really rich, she managed to get hi-tech (for 2012) prostheses for the missing limbs and cybernetic implants in her eyes, as well as hi-tech hearing aids.

Step one is not being a Mystic Adept. Honestly, it depends on the character concept. You'll get more mileage out of Assensing than you would in Counterspelling, but you need decent ranks at Counterspelling to be able to do it reliably.

One of my fondest Shadowrun memories was the first game I got to play in. It was in 4e, and I had spent all my money and essence on Wired Reflexes 3, and I had gotten into a barfight.

So my character is standing in front of a table of guys, and one gets mad and wipes a bottle at him as they all stand up, and slip in unison on an ice sheet our mage laid down.

And it was just how the GM described it. "You've caught the bottle, and the three guys around the table are all in varies states of mid air flight. They are moving exceptionally slow, as you process everything that is going on around in super slow motion. You still have an action, they are all vulnerable in mid air, what do you do?"

"I set the bottle down on the table."

"As the bottle connects with the surface of the table, the three hit the ground together in a loud thud, they all have confused looks on their faces about where this ice has come from."

And the only thing I could think of at that moment was "Wow, that's fast..."
>>
>>51407803

I'm actually playing an AI which rigs in an anthrodrone in SR 4. It was some work to explain the DM drones didn't use any reaction or agility in combat because they actually processed the world in superspeed all the time, and only mathematical operations and ballistic previsions were necessary to a rigger in combat, since everything was so slow-paced for him on the battlefield, and reflexes were useless, but that the body speed limitations made it so everything can't be dodged with ease, and that even when you see the bullets, you can't dodge them all.
But when he understood that, It was like being the Flash on Novacoke.
>>
>>51407448

Shouldn't that be actually a bit more than that? I mean, if you add REA and INT you can easily get to about 30 + 5d6 or higher.

I have a question for people who regularly deal with summoners and spirits;

Are spirits meant to be listed with static Force levels per the individual, or are they variable based on your character's input in the process of summoning them?

I want to lay out a few spirits my mage is familiar with, but with listing them individually, it seems strange to give them variable Force ratings.

Basically, do individual spirits have static or variable Force ratings?
>>
>>51408400
their force is the force you designate when you summon it, up to 2x your magic rating

Yeah, but I'm trying to work out whether that specific spirit is meant to always have that Force whenever it's summoned. I suppose it's down to preference, really, but I'm curious about how other people do it with their spirits, if they prefer to list a select few who are more defined, or if they just pull at random and define them on the fly.

Nah.
Keeping it legal for Chargen (Restricted Gear for MBW3):
Lets assume 8 INT (6 base, +1 metagenetic derpity +1 cerebrellum booster), REA 8 (5 base + 3 from MBW) + flat INI bonus of 9 from R3 MBW
=> 27 Base INI +2 D6
pop a Dose of Accelerator
=> 27 + 5 D6 so on average around 44 INI giving you a pretty good chance for 5 passes, 4 guaranteed passes (min INI is 32) and the possibility to get 6 passes (max INI is 57).
Going higher is possible but comes with disgustingly high opportunity costs very fast (hehe).
Still pretty neat and absolutely Chargen legal.

The most economic sound option would be Restricted Gear for Rating II Alphaware MBW 3 and Biocompatibility (Cyberware).
You are still very fast but have enough essence left for some neat toys and pay significantly less than 200k Nuyen.
>>
>>51408478
Chummer, I don't understand what you mean
When you summon a spirit (say a fire spirit) to choose the force (e.g. 3) and then roll MAG + Summoning vs Force (in this case 3). net hits are services. Until you use up the services or sunrise/-set your spirit has force 3. If afterwards you want another fire spirit you can choose force again.
Just like with spells you only note stuff by how it depends on force
E.g. you write
Body F-2 Strength F-1 Agility F+4 Reaction F+1
Logic F Willpower F Intuition F Charisma F
When you then summon the spirit you just calculate using that force

I think you mean if it's the same spirit fluffwise. Like, on monday you summon Bob, the Fire-Spirit at Force 3. If you then, on thursday, summon a fire spirit again at Force 8 if it's still Bob - or Clarence the much stronger Fire Spirit.

Really, it comes down to Fluff i think and how you like it. You could argue Bob has a better grip on the material world on thursday and therefore has a bigger force thanks to your more reckless summoning. Or it's just another spirit.
And if you're hermetic you don't even care who that fucking spirit thinks it is.

Then again, most GMs i've seen dont waste so much ernegry on fluffing out a spirit anyway, although according to the book they're the ones playing the spirit.

Newb GM needs help.

How do you design your bad guys? Do you generate them as runners, 'by the book'? Or maybe just throwing together some stats on the fly?
First option is slow and tiresome. And hey, do my corporate-wagemage-NPC really needs lifestyle, several set of clothes, car, weapons he left at home, etc.? It's fine fluff-wise, but if it isn't justified by plot, it's redundant, right?
Second option is sloppy, unfair and looks like leveled list in The Elder Scrolls game. Also, it is difficult to add some flavor to your NPCs without deep, planned chrome (or magic, whatever else) selection.

So, is there any quick flowchart or generator or something?

Another thing - my players are experienced, and just keep turning all combat events to some sick jokes. Like razorgirl killing NPC gunner with a single attack by EDGYng-out her initiative and charging him. So, how do I balance, and how do I tactics?

I have a question.

What is the Device Rating of Rating 25 Foam Explosives?

The Device Ratings page seems to go from Device Rating 1-6, and Character Gen caps you at DR 6. But the only things that have higher than DR 6 are like, well, as far as I can find, literally nothing. Even the highest of high-end RCCs and Cyberdecks only have a Device Rating of 6.

As far as I can tell, there's a difference between Rating and Device Rating, but there seems to be an oddly large number of people online trying to say that they're the same, and trying to say that you can't, for example, get a Rating 10 Bow at character generation, despite the fact that you'd be perfectly capable of walking into the nearest Sports Store and just... purchasing it over the counter without any hassle at all.

Can someone lend a hand here, please? I'm continuing to try and look, but I haven't yet actually found anything that directly says how it works in either direction.
>>
>>51411204
Device Rating and Rating are not the same thing. Rating typically denotes levels of quality. Device Rating represents how complex or advanced the electronics are within the device.

Foam Explosives could be either 2-3 DR I think.
>>
>>51411269
That's what I'm assuming, but just for the sake of it, do you have a particular page that explicitly says that? Pretty much... well, anything with a Rating higher than 6 seems to basically imply it as hard as possible, but this is one of those cases where seeing if I can get a proper RAW here would be great.
>>
>>51411300
It doesn't explicitly say it because its assumed that because they are called different things, they are actually different things. Off the top of my head, Cyberlimb Customization can go above Rating 6 if you're not human.

How do you successfully boil SR's mechanics down into something that doesn't give people headaches? How the heck does it manage to confound people so much?

It seems really easy to get without having to toss in some headache-inducing brand new system with Anarchy, which as far as I can tell (and what others have said) doesn't really facilitate Shadowrun's style in the first place.

It's a simple dice roll of skills+attribute (or attribute+attribute in certain cases) to get a certain number of successes (hits), which in 5e has constraints in the form of limits (aside from attribute tests which don't use those). There are certain ways to bend this, like using edge to game the system a little.

Is there anything I'm really missing there? Is it too "narrativist" for SR's system to arbitrarily declare penalties and bonuses to die rolls?

Keep the Lynx. Maybe take out some points from your Aircraft stuff for pistols; it's a lot of skillpoints spent on skills you seem to only be using for the MiniZep.

I wouldn't bother getting special ammo for the Streetline; it's not going to be something you rely on to do any heavy lifting, it's a quick "keep squeezing the trigger till it runs dry, then toss it in the nearest public recycling bin". Spend the money on a taser so you have a legal self-defense option anywhere, important when you have no ability at all in melee.

Also in your bio it says troll, might be anon read that.

If you have problems understanding the mechanics, then RPGs aren't for you. They aren't that complicated, there are numerous guides around that will help you to understand them, and there's no real excuse for not being able to learn it.

The only semi-legitimate excuse for being unable to learn a system is time, and if that's the problem, then you didn't have enough time to play the game anyway.

The 11R is hard to find at base price, but can be legally owned with a license in Seattle. It could be more legal in other places, and thus not require a license or less legal and so no license would let you legally own in.

And in that case, it's the same as 11F, a bit hard to find at base price, but you can't legally own it. If you're seen with it somewhere that law enforcement cares about, they're calling in back-up (if necessary) and trying to arrest or shoot you.

R is restricted, meaning that it's only accessible to people with the license to have one. If you want to have one (and carry it around in public) you need to buy a fake license.

F is forbidden, almost no one can get it. No licenses available for civilains. Don't get caught with it.

Making it just straight skill checks is the easiest way to do it, but personally I don't like that. Makes it feel less cool sneaking into databases, getting marks and whatnot. I'm just a glutton for cool cyberspace shenanigans.

I use the aids in OP to speed it along, tracking everything well and making damn sure that whoever is playing the decker knows their business and handles their end of the paperwork. If it takes more than 5 seconds to decide if they are going to Hack on the Fly or Brute Force, they're doing it wrong.

>>
>>51412165
There are two general choices I see.
On one hand, you can gut Marks and make decking a set of opposed skill tests. You'd effectively ignore Brute Force and Hack on the Fly, and just use LOG/INT + Hacking/Cybercombat/E. Warfare vs Device Rating + Firewall tests for whatever action you want.

At my table I make all matrix actions simple actions, because I like the marks system. It doesn't reduce the number of rolls, but it does make things take less meat time, so you can place a mark and open a door in a single action phase.

Corp-limited means that you were never more than a low level worker, and not even all low level workers get Corp-limited SINs. If you were in a management position, it wasn't an important one. Like being the manage of a Stuffer Shack.

If you have a Full Corp SIN, you were probably born into the Corp and rising to an actually important position could have been on the docket, or even happened.

And while both will get some anger pointed at you from SINless and anti-corp types, the Full Corp SINner is more likely to be deserving of some of it.

I thought of this last night, and was wondering if it would be an appropriate code of honor for a game where you're likely to go against other runners (like the Carib League)

Honor Among Thieves
Living in the shadows is already a hard life, and you're not going to make it worse. When dealing with shadowrunners or members of shadow communities (fixers, smugglers, and the like), you always act equitably and honestly. If a confrontation arises with other shadowrunners (or members of a shadow community), you always attempt to resolve the confrontation nonviolently, and failing that will only use less than lethal force. Failing any of these incurs a loss of karma as detailed in the Code of Honor quality.

Not sure if I asked /SRG/ about it yet but I was wondering if it would be possible to make a techy character but instead of putting a ton of points into 6 different craft skills to just get a couple maintenance drones with mechanical skills autosofts and let them do the repairs/upgrades/maintenance for me.

I'm having difficulty crunching through the magic system. Let me see if I've got this right.

Step 1 and 2, pick a spell, pick a target. No problem there.

Step three, choose the Force of the spell (which acts as the limit for that spell). No problem there either.

"If the number of hits (not net hits) you get after applying the limit exceeds your Magic rating, the spell’s Drain is Physical instead of Stun damage."

Alright, so say I have 5 Magic, and 5 Spellcasting. I get that if I roll more than 5 hits, any drain I get is Physical damage. So what does applying the limit have to do with it?

Step 4, cast. Just a simple test with Force acting as the limit. No problem.

Step 5, determine effect. Effect will vary depending on spell type/spell. No problem.

Step 6, calculate drain. No problems here either, DV is listed next to each spell.

Am I missing something here? I feel like I am.

In addition, why would one ever use a combat spell? A gun does just as much damage, and has zero chance of making you bleed from your eyes.
>>
>>51414434
There's a drone in Rigger 5.0 that's meant for just that. But ask yourself this: what's worth more, skill points or money spent on drones that you never use on the job?
>>
>>51414434
Yeah thats completely possible. I built a Street Samurai ex-Ganger w/ 1 LOG who uses an Agent and an Evo Proletariat to handle his Matrix and his mechanical repairs.
>>
>>51414506
Let's say you cast at force 4, but get 9 hits.

You take stun, because after applying the limit you had 4 hits on the casting roll.

Alternatively, let's say that you cast at force 10, but spent 5 reagents to set the limit to 5. Even if you rolled 10 hits, it's still going to be stun because the new limit is 5, and that's not over your magic.

On the other hand, Force 10 is pretty high, so you're probably eating a lot of stun. Hope it was worth it.
>>
>>51414506
You are indeed missing something, chummer. Firearms start on page 424 in core. Even the best mages will still get tired from all that spell slinging. If you're smart, you keep a reliable backup. Remember- never exhaust yourself doing something that the pull of a trigger could do just as well, and especially not on a dangerous run where every point of drain could prove fatal.

>>51414526
I was supposed to play 4e and they have a drone, the Lockheed Vulcan, who is meant for handling aeronautic mechanic and supposedly can be reprogrammed with other mechanic autosofts without much issues.

I was thinking of maybe modding a flying drone with the same system the Vulcan has and use it to sabotage stuff while I'm not using it to manage my gear for me.

That way I was thinking I could focus my skill points on combat and piloting skills and maybe specializing into crafting software to cut costs for improving the drone's crafting abilities.
>>
>>51413871
I got you senpai. Sadly it's on my pic so I'll probably pay it later. Probably 3-4 hours from now.
>>
>>51415178
I actually had a setup in 5e: get a small or minidrone (Horizon CU^3 Pro is nice because of the high pilot rating, comparative to other drones), fit it with a drone arm or two (downgrade sensors), give at least one arm a built-in toolkit, and get a RCC with rating 6 autosofts (locksmith and hardware are good choices for field work, but you can swap them out for whatever.)

It's not very durable, but it's small, mobile, and has 10 dice in whatever skill you need.
>>
>>51414964
It also helps you not look like a mage, which is useful for not being alphaed off the field.
>>
>>51415303
I don't know much about 5e because the books are still coming out but in 4e they had an add-on for drone called "fuzzy logic" which would add 3 dices to a drone's action if you let it take a minute to analyze his task. Maybe they have something similar in 5e. Anyway that sounded very useful when it comes to bypassing dice caps.
>>
>>51415502
I haven't seen anything like that in 5e yet, most drone checks are Pilot + Autosoft +- modifiers - which is why the toolkit is important because those +2 dice help a lot.
