That was a quick thread, sorry for reposting but in regards to the new FAQ, how do people feel about the ruling on Alpha Legion, anyone else play them?

I've found so many more rules questions I'd like them to clear up as well, but for the moment would really like it if they gave us back a second detachment bonus.

I was one of the best Shas'la in the Viorla Sept in my time. No one before me had mastered the power of our Crisis Barrlesuits as quickly as I had. Except Puretide himself of course. In those days we were sweeping across the Damocles Gulf. Devestating all who wouldn't join us. Young fire warriors would prove themselves in real combat with unknown opponents above a thousand worlds. Each brought back the story of his achievements.

I remember my first combat well, orbiting high above a barbaric world, its defenses just stirring. As was tradition, I would go ahead of the first wave to find enemies in the thickest fighting. I remember sitting there in my armor, linked directly with the battlesuit thrumming around me. My heart racing with fear at the coming battle.

The doors opened in front me and the air was sucked out of the drop bay, scattering crystals of frozen vapor across my path. I can't describe what it feels like to look directly down at a world, falling continuously as you circle it, with barely fifteen centimeters of iridium plate protecting you. When the magnetic locks disengaged on my XV-8, I plunged out of the drop bay towards the battle that waited below.

The exhilaration, the euphoria, I felt as I streaked into the atmosphere, dodging self-guided projectile and crude beam weapons, was unmatched. An 80 kilometer plunge through the atmosphere, dodging and weaving, the outside of my armor glowing like the sun with the heat of re-entry. And with barely thirty meters to spare, I twisted and skimmed the surface, firing at the giant beam generators that were in my path. The explosion from that sent shockwaves that levelled the entire complex around it. It was the moment of my life.

You've got a decent amount of Harlequins, you have to decide where to go from there.

A lot of people playing Harlequins take Dark Eldar for useful open-topped transports.

If you instead want to focus on Craftworld Eldar, really you can just look through the codex and point out what seems cool to you. Most things are good.

Balistarii do have arms, Anon.

And if you think any soldier would not use any weapon they can in battle, you're wrong. Say he broke or lost his swords, he has to have something. So he picks up a shitty weapon until he can get something better.

It's an art piece, not fucking tabletop, it doesn't have to adhere to the rules of what they can take as wargear.

They take dark eldar for fire support, because they're really cool.
Craftworld eldar need no allies.

>>
>>51327095
Harlequins are actually their own army, they haven't been part of the Eldar codex for a while, but you can bring them in as allies for an Eldar force.

If you wanna play Eldar, a good starting point would be grabbing one or two of the box sets sold for them (Start Collecting or Armoured Assault) since they're decent value for money. Otherwise, since you already have Eldrad Ulthran, you could buy two Troops choices (Windriders, Guardians, or Dire Avengers) and have an army ready to go.

Those are on there as well. Note that there is an entirely different, extra set of arms. And look how fucking big they are on that back one. They couldn't even get that shit to look the same on two versions of the same thing in the same picture.

That is straight up fucking bad art. It would be one thing if it was good art and wrong for the subject, but it's shit art AND wrong.
>>

You want something decently long range that can pop transports and take down hordes.

>>
>>51327230

>>
>>51327238

Well, for starters, you'd need to get your units into a Detachment. For that, you need two troop choices to start with, which are either Guardians, Dire Avengers, or Windriders. You have Eldrad for your HQ, which you could run as a regular Farseer instead if you wanted to.

If you wanted deals on those troop choices, either Armored Assault or Start Collecting would be good things to pick up. Armored Assault comes with a unit of Dire Avengers and a transport, while Start Collecting includes a unit of Windriders, a tank, and another Farseer, this one on a bike.

A lot of problems stem from the fact that Harlequins aren't Codex: Craftworlds, so they don't really help you build a list. The formation from Death Masque is a pretty decent one to tack on to a larger force, though.

One riptide is really all you'll ever need, but if you go into larger games of 2k points and up, a second one shouldn't get you too many dirty looks (unless your opponent really hates Tau). Three riptides is almost universally despised, especially when taken in the riptide wing formation.

No, you just dont know how to play eldar yet. Its expected if you show up with eldar that sucker is up there nice and snug. If you are not using it, you are dis respecting your opponent, who thinks its only right and fair you should be forced to use it, since you are using eldar anyway. Did you even read your BRB. Its right on page 47, 3rd paragraph:

"however in the case of choosing eldar as your army, its common courtesy to your opponent to show your eldar pride with the "traditional" eldar attire".
>>
>>51327644
Do you play with or against this detachment? I ask because some friends of mine think it might be too strong if you have "infinite" cultists, and I'm not sure on that. Would like some outside opinions on the strength of getting double cultists sometimes. The bonus still seems fine to me if it's just a re-roll and you have two chances to get one unit, but if it actually does nothing like a lot of people think, that kinda makes it probably the worst legion doesn't it?

You can end up drowning the board in trash, you might never win on kill points, but when 90% of the board has become cultists, that hardly matters.

My wife collects Necrons, a small force that she fluffed out as all being female. She gave them all Egyptian and Greek female names. The models don't look any different; she just reasoned that ALL the Necrontyr were put into the Necrodermis, and that therefore a lot of the Warriors would be female.

It's a pity that motherhood put a halt to her collecting; I used to enjoy our little tabletop skirmishes between her 'Crons and my Orks.

On the plus side, when I ask my 3 year old daughter "What sound does an Ork make?" she yells "WAAAAAGH!" She's also taken to exclaiming "Look Daddy, an Ork bike!" whenever she hears a loud motorbike.

Its looks fine enough Anon. The only thing i would attempt to do is instead of taking the autocannon heavy weapons squad take another infantry squad instead - then add the heavy weapons teams to each squad.

You get 3 more lasguns, 1 more laspistol and a lot more survivability for your autocannons for 5 points. The only issue is that you'd have to find 5 points from somewhere and there's nothing to trim from your list.

The only thing would be to drop the Executioner plasma sponsons or take a slightly cheaper russ such as the Exterminator instead of a regular russ. At that point its not really worth it.

Just have the factions transport pool avaliable to everyone.
>>
>>51328559
The only thing that I accept is the greater good. The emperor is dead and so is the imperium of man. Chaos is coming, Merry Slaaneshmas faggot
>>
>>51328608
Why do you think transports got their own FOC slots?

When you buy a DT, you're saving on the FOC slots by dedicating that transport to the unit that bought it. Any other unit can use it during the game (as long as said unit doesn't have restrictions like no terminators in a Rhino), but the transport was primarily provided to the unit it was bought with and they're the primary beneficiaries of the vehicle. If you want some other unit to use a transport, give it to them as a DT or use a FOC slot to buy the transport.

Its a pretty solid list Anon. An alternative tactic could be to drop a LRBT entirely.

Then you could grab Pask and put him in the executioner with a squadmate tank. Leaves you 75 points - grab a Chimera to make the CCS more survivable and use the remaining 10 points to give your platoon command some special weapons or a heavy weapon.

Just a thought, not saying you should give up a russ for that but you do have some options.

Played a 4-round tournament today, local club with ITC rules.

Ran the following lists:

Tau CAD 1500
Shas'O R'alai
Cadre Fireblade (warlord)
Iontide
Strike Team
Breachers in Devilfish
2 Remoras
Tireless Hunter Piranha
2 individual Missilesides

Optimized Stealth Cadre

Kill Team (200)
TL Missile pod Crisis (commander)
Double flamer Crisis (stealth)
TL plasma Crisis (Eagle eye)
12 Kroot snipers (1 with Killer Instinct)

Game one: Defense against Death Guard. Lost 14-1. Mix of poor deployment and placement (let my ghostkeel get charged by Spawn because I wasn't familiar with beast rules) and getting fucked by 4 out flanking acute senses rhinos and a bike squad.

Game 2: Kill Team defense against Iron Warriors. Lost 6-1. I didn't read the mission rules well enough or I'd have protected my specialists better (he got points for killing them, I'd get points for them surviving). Also made the terrible mistake of charging MULTIPLE Kroot against a Spawn, otherwise I could have contested an objective.

Game 3: Kill Team attack against Guard. Won 4-2. My ability to sabotage objectives as my main source of points heavily benefited from Infiltrate, and lots of forest terrain. Would have had linebreaker if we didn't run out of time.

Game 4: defense against White Scars hunters and knight. Lost 6-0. Started well by shooting 4 bike squads off the board turn 1, but could not kill the Artifice armor captain and couldn't reach the objectives in time, and the Knight cleared both objectives I was holding. Also, deep striked Remoras because I was overly intimidated by the quad cannon objective, and they mishap exploded.

Overall, had a good time. Definitely enjoyed the lower point cost games more, less stressful.

Why does everyone think things are memes? Like, it's not even a funny or interesting meme, it makes no sense. I guess that's true of a lot of memes, but still.

There's a reason we randomly repeat certain things all the time, like Tau players being douchebags with unpainted Riptides, or all women liking Tyranids, or to thin your paints. It's because they're true, and the more people think they're memes, the more they get repeated to tell these people they are wrong.

Imagine if morons kept not believing the world was round. The streets would be filled with shouts of THE WORLD ISN'T FLAT YOU DUMB FUCKER

So does the Codex Astartes put any limit on how many vehicles and ships a chapter can possess?

Is it just limiting them to 1000 basic marines?

And what about dreadnaughts and aspirants, is there a limit on there numbers?

I gen up cannot understand how space marine chapters exist and work.

Short answer no

Long answer they are frail as fuck, hard to hide in cover, inaccurate, outclassed in most places by drop sentinels or armoured sentinels (or he'll other things in the codex)

They have a tiny niche for outflanking and snagging mid game objectives but that's about it

They are worse at killing high T and high AV things than plasma and melta and worse at killing hordes than flamers.

Firstly, >using degenerate unironically to describe Elf Monks in an autism dolly game

Secondly, there are buttloads of non-cheesy builds for both of those factions, you're actually getting butthurt over four or five OP/spammable units and formations from two codexes that each have dozens of units, and you probably don't even play against these cheese builds anyway and just complain on /tg/ about them, being unnecessarily hostile and scaring off new players in the process.

I thought that space marine vehicles were crewed exclusively by tech marines?

I also think that the chapter does count them since they have 9 companies of 100~ marines each with chapter command staff on top of that. 10th company is a variable number so they come out at about 1000 or so.

CAD Tau was what they were in 6E, and they were cheese. How is 1 XV85, 3 Riptides, 2 Stormsurges, and 2x3 XV8 in a CAD not cheese? They are cheese even with zero formation bonuses.

Footdar is STILL better than casual marine armies or shitty armies like orks. Both WK and war walkers and warp spiders, all their best non jet bike units, are foot units. Meleedar are literally better at assault than all armies except dedicated heavy assault like BA SW and Khorne.

>>
>>51329309
A Combined Arms Detachment is a game concept, combined arms is a real-life concept. He's saying a Tau that doesn't spam and uses a variety of units.

Footdar is significantly worse than casual marines armies. T3 units with 12-18" guns without a delivery system die, it's really that simple. They need transports, decurion buffs, or to be Warp Spiders to do well. Also meleedar are uniquely mediocre, there's literally one worthwhile melee unit in the codex and that's the Wraithknight. Everything else is incredibly fragile, situational, and expensive. T3 units can't avoid damage in melee, and they get no cover save. Literally how do you think Meleedar are better than all these other armies?

The limit is basically the 10 companies with 10 squads of 10 men. Everything else is more or less support staff.

Vehicles come from the chapter motor pool, apothecaries, librarians, chaplains, etc. from their own units. Honor guard is outside the 10 companies as well, I believe. I think someone calculated that according to all the official numbers given, Ultras, for example, have like 1200 Marines or something. And that doesn't count in all the serfs and shit.

Melta and flamers are short ranged, plasma expensive and blows up in your face.

I play in a local tourney and they guy who wins most of the tournies is a total prick to play against, bending the rules and intentionally just not being personable so you'll make mistakes

>he says "oh good you forgot to fire that unit, I was hoping you'd miss it"

I end up playing him a lot because I hang around that top 3 level, and he's always miserable even if I beat him

Both totally legal responses but one creates a toxic atmosphere to play a game that sometimes can last 3 hours

If you asked those guys why they brought skatporn or ruptides they would probably respond with "I wanted to win" and they don't consider anything else about why you would play 40k

In my experience the actually good tournament players are genuinely chill dudes who usually paint their armies themselves, but understand the cutthroat meta and build lists accordingly.

Say what you will about their aesthetic and quality of crunch but the Riptide and Wraithknight are both incredibly versatile kits with a wide variety of modeling and posing options. Tournamentshitters generally tend to build them in their GW-recommended monopose, though, except when one of their Riptides becomes left-handed for added snowflakiness.

Part of me is sad that the direction GW has taken for Tau been "Suits, and bigger Suits." Like, I miss when the Railhead was one of the most iconic things about the Tau (though that's more the result of the game system making HP-scrubbing the default way to kill tanks), among other things.

...also, part of me does wish that GW made Drones way more modular. Like, rather than having so many Drones which are exclusive to specific units, there was more interchangeability. Like, I would pay 25 points per Drone (or the upgrade cost, relative to said Drones) to get Missile Drones on a Devilfish, or for Shield Drones to basically be "Ablative Hull Points", etc.

I know about the Ta'unar. It's crunch is bullshit, but as fluff goes I'm surprisingly indifferent. Likely because
>it isn't open-topped
>it exists to patch a hole in Tau combat doctrine, that being actually holding a point
>it actually looks kinda cool, at least compared to the Stormsurge
>being a defensive piece, it's harder to justify the use of fluffwise
>it's FW with a FW price, so only the most diehard WAACfags will buy one, as opposed to the Riptide, Stormsurge and to a lesser extent FW Riptides which everyone owns

Personally, I consider "make its points back" a fallacy in army selection.

Sportsmanship and being able to help out new players is also a good sign, as well as being able to play 40k faster, without having to look up "which phase were we in again?"

From a sheer "knowing the game" perspective, tThere's definitely a point past "memorizing stats" where things start to click and you realize how an army works as a cohesive whole. Some armies can actually do surprising things, even despite using otherwise bad/suboptimal units.

Weirdboyz because it's da Weird an' Wild Waaagh! of Zum Zum 'Eadzappa. Can't have a Weird Waaagh! without a weirdboss!

No bike for the Warboss because he's going on the Squiggoth with the Nobz. Nobz because Meganobz are too high tech for them. Some of them think even Dakka is a bit much, and prefer Twanga. Bows. Though they do strap explosives to their arrows for the fun explodey bit.

Bikers are either going to be Saurus Knights, Cold Ones or Boars, maybe even a mix. Deffcoptas are Ripperdactyls or Terradon kitbashes/conversions. Regular Boyz are basically Savage Orruks with guns.

It's not really aiming to be a competitive list, I'm just updating a list I posted earlier. I'm just having fun with it.

Orks vs skittles
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbbW5qSqHB0

StrikingScorpion wins yet another battle with his Orks, what happened to >melee race?
Why are his Orks so good?
Is he running a very strong, tournament worth list or is he just a good player?

Perhaps... Orks are that bad?
That all the people surrounding the game that think Orks are actually a pretty strong codex if you play them right... are right?

I think it's safe to say we can take this a proof Orks are more powerful than they seem in the hands of a good player.

>Tau are inherently OP

I've said this before - it's not that they're OP, it's that they simply aren't fun to play against.

Every time I play my friends semi-casual Tau army, it's only fun if I can get Raptors into punching range. Otherwise, it's just a long, drawn out battle of him getting pissed off that Blastmasters and Sonic Blasters ignore cover, including your pathetic Jink saves and him constantly jumping all across the board and staying out of reach with his suits.

I win against him more than I lose, but i don't usually make any tangible headway until like the last two turns at best. Before that, it's "how can I box his jump units in while managing to dodge his Ignores Cover shooting with reasonable losses."
>>
>>51330172
Aha! If additional Weirdboyz are what you want, you could easily split your CAD up and get more HQ slots. Alternately, if you don't mind having some "low-tek" Mekboyz to act as "Minderz" of a sort, there's the Mogrok's Bossboyz formation from Sanctus Reach. One thing I've found in the past is that the Weirdboyz do have a passable set of Witchfires, but actually have trouble getting in range to use them, so getting Acute Senses/Outflank helps!

How "open" are you to Counts As, for some parts of your army at least? I'm not saying "Count your Orks as something else", but if you're feeling cheeky, don't forget that Chaos and Orks are Allies of Convenience, so you always do have the option to run a standalone formation (a Cyclopia Cabal, or War Coven or otherwise), as additional "standalone" Psykers. Maybe use a "Daemon Prince" as an Azhag The Slaughterer or something similar like that. :>

I mean, from a gameplay perspective, I play Chaos/Word Bearers with some Daemon Support, so most my games tend to be how much am I willing to sacrifice in order to control the center of the board, and what early summons let me maintain pressure on my opponent.

Speaking of bad sportsmanship, there unfortunately are army-lists like this which make me want to punch Phil Kelly and Robin Cruddace and anyone else that thinks "Lots of random pre-game rolls" equals "Forging the Narrative!".*

*note, this army makes 36 rolls for Psychic powers, 36 rolls for Lesser gifts, and a Warlord Trait. Technically, this list could never lose a tournament, because each tournament round would end before it finished rolling powers!

>>
>>51330224
>40k is satire

IT'S A PASTICHE REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

A Pastiche is a work that internally takes itself seriously, but the audience can understand is a caricature or intentionally over-the-top.

A Satire is a work that doesn't take itself seriously.

40K has ALWAYS taken itself seriously from an internal standpoint. The ridiculousness is obvious to us as outside observers, but in-setting everything happens for a reason and that reason is Daemons and aliens are dicks.

Remember, the Imperial policy of REMOVE XENO arose because DAoT/Age of Strife humans constantly getting fucked over by Xenos for thousands of years, specifically Eldar and Orks, and large chunks of human society getting enslaved or wiped out because humanity was fractured and unable to coordinate with one another.

The REMOVE HERETIC policy came about because demons and hell are not only real, they're actively out to kill you, and simply KNOWING about their existence can get you possessed by mind-fucking Daemons that can tear open holes in reality that, if not immediately closed, can literally drag an entire planet into Hell itself. Furthermore, these Daemons can and will talk to psykers, especially those that aren't caught by the Imperium, and utilize them to cause these holes in reality at the absolute most destructive point in time PURELY because it can.

While the Imperium is obviously over the top and ridiculously cruel to our 21st century eyes, in their reality it is simply the only method of humanity as a species.

>they don't do it for 'genetic purity'

Yes they do. Purity is a major theme. The human form is treated as holy and sacrosanct and mutants are to be purged. Space marines are valued by the purity of their gene seed.

Anyone that thinks the Imperium is doing the best with a bad situation hasn't read the fluff. The Imperium make everything worse for themselves.

Guardsman are actively lied to and misled by propaganda. They're a callously squandered resource.

Ad Mech treat tech like witch craft incessantly lose technology due to superstition and ignorance.

The entire empire is a bloated, mismanaged bureaucracy where lives are wasted on pointless missions and regiments long dead are sentenced to death for minor infractions.

The Emperor is not a DBZ character. He's a tragic character who failed at everything he tried and actively set up humanity for failure. He wanted no religion and created the most dogmatic regime imaginable. He wanted humanity to be self reliant but created armies that did away with their humanity. He wanted to destroy Chaos, but his policy of maintaining ignorance over discipline led to his betrayal and a society of unfettered emotions that is defined by Chaos's favourite things: war, entropy, excess and hope.

They aren't a realistic response to a dire situation you retards. Their dire situation is because of their own fuck ups and Chaos is a direct reflection of that.

Oh, and in case you didn't notice they DRESS AS FUCKING NAZIS.
