You open your eyes as you wake from a pleasant dream, and the first thing you see is Safi sleeping across from you. Half of you expected to wake up to being snuggled... but you guess that isn't the case.
But someone is being snuggled, it seems. You can see a pair of bunny ears poking out from under the covers.
"Zee?" You ask.
"Oh" Zee says. "You're awake"
"What are you doing here?" You ask.
"All the cool kids were in this bed. I just wanted to be popular" She says.
"Really?" You ask.
"And this is my bed" She says.
"Is it really?" You ask. "Why didn't you say something?"
"I wanted to wake you, but Tasha said not to" She says. "B-but it's still my bed..."
You pat her head over her bunny-hood. "It's alright" You say. "We'll find somewhere else to sleep tonight"
"It's okay, you don't have to" She says. "Bed, warmer this way"
You sit up and throw your legs over the side of the bed.
"Wait" Zee says.
"What?" You ask.
"Need help" She says, and you can see her wiggling underneath the covers. "She won't let go"
>See if you can get Zee out without waking Safi
>You'll be fine
"Alright, let's see if we can get you out of there" You say.
"I've tried" Zee says.
"Well, now it's my turn" You say, as you try to pry Safi's arms off.
"Nooooo" Safi says as she tightens her grip. "My potatoes, go get your own"
"I'm not potatoes" Zee says.
"So that's not going to work" You say. "Put your arms up, I'll try to pull you out"
Zee holds her arms up, and you take her hands... err, paws, and pull.
"It's no good" Zee says.
"Dangit Safi..." You say.
Zee starts to squirm. "Too tight" She says.
You sit back and think. If Safi is clinging because of her dream, then maybe...
"Safi, I need these potatoes" You say.
"I'm not potatoes" Zee says.
"My potatoes" Safi says.
"How will I make french fires without them?" You ask.
"French fries..." Safi says. "Will they be delicious?"
"Absolutely" You say.
Safi loosens her grip, and you pull Zee out.
"I can't believe that worked" You say.
"Thank you" Zee says. "I need to make breakfast"
You nod and check your watch. It's 9:00am.
>Need a hand?
>See what Tasha is up to
>Where the heck did Moriarty go?
"I will let you" You say. "I'd offer to help out, but I... can't really cook"
"Don't worry" She says. "I cook good"
"I know, you proved that pretty well yesterday" You say. "And it's 'I cook well'"
"Oh" Zee says. "I cook well"
"Better" You say. "And if you see Moriarty, could you let me know? Usually that fuzzball sleeps with me"
"Okay" She says.
You and Zee nod to each other, and then she scurries off.
You throw some clothes on and give Safi a peck on the forehead before heading out yourself. Following your connection with Mori, you make your way around the house until you come to a room.
The door is shut, so you knock.
"Come in" Tasha says.
You open the door and step inside to find Tasha sitting in front of a mirror in a housecoat, groggily trying to brush her hair...
Only her hair is fighting back... well, not her hair. Moriarty has somehow found his way onto her head, and he swats at the brush every time it gets close.
But Tasha keeps trying to brush it... does she not notice the kitten on her head?
He is kind of camouflaged, but still. How do you not notice a kitten sitting on your head?
"How's it going?" You ask.
Tasha groans. "I hate mornings" She says.
"Not a morning person, huh?" You ask.
Tasha groans again. "And on top of everything, I can't seem to get this knot out of my hair..." She says.
So she doesn't notice...
>Let her know
>Silently remove Moriarty from her head
>Leave the room
Without a word, you walk over and pick Moriarty up by the scruff. He tries to swat away your hand, but you've got some experience with this.
Tasha watches with mild interest as you pluck the kitten off her head, and her eyes go wide when she sees what was actually going on.
"Huh" She says.
"He's a little uhh..." You trail off, not sure what to say.
"I must be less awake than I thought" Tasha says.
"I'll just uhh..." You say, pointing to the door with your thumb. "Go and do... something else"
"Yes, good plan" She says. "It goes without saying that you tell no one about this"
"Yeah, don't worry about it" You say, as you make your way out.
Once you're past the door, you close it. "Oh, I'm totally telling everyone about this"
"What was that?" Tasha asks.
"Nothing, don't worry" You say.
You take a breath, and then walk away. You figure that you'll wait things out in the sitting room while everyone else goes about their business.
"Mee" Moriarty says.
"I'm not going to ask how you managed to pull that off" You say. "But in the future, could you try to be a little nicer to Tasha?"
"Mew" He replies.
"No promises, I know" You say. "You're lucky you're so damn cute"
You make it down to the sitting room, and flop down onto the couch. It's a soft couch, but it's not as roomy as you like... you miss your couch. Unfortunately, your grenade probably totaled it...
"It and everything else" You say. "Fuck..."
You probably have a while to wait, so you should find something to do.
>Read a book
>Play with Mori
>>Realize we probably lost our computer and all of our porn
You get comfortable and give Moriarty the scratches that you know he wants, letting out a chuckle when you hear him start to purr.
While you may dread the thought, you really should try and get back to your apartment. If for no other reason than to see what did and didn't survive.
You try and picture what would have been around the area where the grenade went off... if you aimed it right, then it would have been right over the coffee table. You keep pretty much every important thing on that table.
"Damn" You say.
Most of that stuff was replaceable. The files on your laptop and your DS are gone, but you don't think anything important was on there anyway...
With your free hand you pat down your pockets to see if you still have your phone, pulling it out when you find it. It's still broken, but it still works...
As far as Arena notes go, last night was an empty one. With the Puppeteer gone, nobody had to enter, so nobody did. That means that the Judge and the Muse will be forced in tonight, which is something to think about.
You also have a message... from Claire. It came in at 3:00am? What the hell is she texting you at 3am for?
[Claire]>Forget what I said. Judge and Muse are mine. Don't get in the way.
You scowl. What the hell could have brought that on?
>Ask what happened.
>Why don't we cooperate?
[Claire]<What the hell happened?
You send it off and then keep an eye on your phone. You have to do something about this lack of notice. For now, you can turn the volume on... which is something you should have done when it first broke.
[Claire]>You're just replying now?
[Claire]>Nevermind. Check the news, it should be up there.
You look around. There isn't a T.V. in here, so you pull up the Star's website on your phone. It isn't hard to find.
"Holy shit" You say.
Claire's house burned to the ground.
[Claire]<Is everything alright? Was anyone hurt?
[Claire]>We're all fine, mostly.
[Claire]>They... came prepared.
[Claire]<What is that supposed to mean?
[Claire]>Don't worry about it. Just stay out of my way.
>Why don't we work together?
>Push for more details
>>Push for more details
>Why don't we work together?
Listen, they can turn invisible, and Muse can erase motherfucking SOUND and LIGHT.
Not to mention Judge's Pistol. Does she remember what that does? It would rip her to pieces.
She can't brute force her way through this one.
My guess is that they brought Judge and Muse with them, to ensure that Claire and Julia couldn't do shit.
Jess's last request was for Saif to try and take care of her, and I can respect that.
She can't take these guys on alone.
You roll your eyes at her last message. Without even hearing her say it, you know that she's been shaken up. And you know that this conversation is going nowhere, so you hit the call button...
You don't expect her to pick up, but it's worth a try...
Oh, hang on. She actually picked up.
"Hello?" Claire asks.
"Claire" You say. "I'm gonna ask you again: What happened?"
The line is silent for a moment.
"I was... hurt" She says.
"Hurt how?" You ask.
"Zey brought some big guns" She says. "Zey attacked while we were sleeping, I... changed... I tried to fight, but-"
"Take a breath" You say. "In, and out"
You hear Claire breathe on the other side of the line. She sounds pretty shaken up.
"Now, start from the top" You say.
Claire tells you her part of the story. She was woken by the sound of explosions and gunfire late in the night. Her house had security... had. They went first.
When Claire figured out what was going on, she hulked out and tried to fight back. But they were ready for her. She couldn't describe the weapon they used, but it was capable of piercing her skin even when she focused on defense.
"You think it might've been the Judge's pistol?" You ask.
"No... only ze Muse was zere" She says. "It was somesing else... somesing big"
"What happened next?" You ask.
"Coven forces arrived" She says. "Zey drove ze Sacred Mountain off..."
>So Coven is back in town...
>Are you alright?
>You can't take them on alone
Okay, something's bugging me: if Muse was with them, how did they even hear anything? Wouldn't she have used her Tuner? Can people outside of it's range hear what's going on, if it's activated?
Does it muffle everything, so that no sound AT ALL escapes it's range?
"Are you alright?" You ask.
"I am... healing" She says.
"That's not what I asked" You say.
"I don't sink I 'ave ever been hurt like zis before..." She says.
"Not even by me?" You ask.
"No..." She says.
"I'm going to help you beat them" You say.
"I already told y-"
"I am going to help you beat them" You say. "If you refuse my help, then we'll end up tripping over each other"
"Don't get me wrong" You say. "Sacred Mountain has destroyed two of my homes now, and I would want to dash any hopes they had of winning this competition regardless"
"Because Jessica told me to take care of you" You say. "You can't take these guys on. The Judge's Pistol would shred you, Claire"
"I could take it" She says.
"No you can't" You say. "I can hear how shaken you are. Your usual strategy isn't going to work here"
"What do you suggest?" She asks.
"Not sure yet" You say.
>But I'll think about it
>We should meet and talk strategy
>We should meet and talk strategy
Should we formalize our alliance with Safi? Or just leave her as an ace in the hole against the judge & muse? I'm sorta worried leaving her put of our alliance will draw a target on her, of the "kill her before she joins them" flavor.
Looks like she doesn't enjoy pain as much as Saif thought.
It's weird, it's like her 'Hulk Mode' has an amplified desire to take pain, for the thrill of a challenge (and the ability to not back down), but, as soon as something like this happens, she... snaps out of it.
This just keeps telling me that her affinity must've been partially messed with, to make her more 'effective'.
"We should talk about this in person" You say.
"I... are you sure?" She asks.
"Yeah" You say.
"Where do you want to meet?" She asks.
"Dunno" You say. "Where are you now?"
"I am at ze 'ospital right now" She says.
"Really?" You ask "Why?"
"Not a regular 'ospital" She says. "A healing 'ouse for mages"
"Oh... so probably not the best place to talk about this" You say.
"No" She says.
"Are you safe there?" You ask.
"We should be" She says.
You nod. "Why don't I get back to you on that" You say. "I've got some things to do over here, and I should talk this over with my other half as well"
"Abigail is there?" She asks.
"No, not Abigail" You say. "My sister, Safi"
"Ah, yes" She says. "I will talk to you soon, zen?"
"Yeah" You say. "Stay safe"
Claire hangs up.
"Mee" Moriarty says.
"I feel you" You say. "And here I was, hoping today would be nice and relaxing"
"Rrrrrewww" Moriarty says.
"At least you aren't going to have to fight those SOBs" You say. "Now come on, let's-"
>See if Safi is awake
>See how breakfast is coming
These guys are fuckin' deadly. They can stay invisible (and silent), and observe everyone else's tactics/skills; they just have to wait 'til the remaining Champions rack up some nice kill counts, so Judge can blow them away.
Not to mention that they get their buddies to wipe out your resources/safe-houses.
Hell, even if you survive, it goads you into going after them, now that you're nice and pissed.
"-see if Safi is awake" You say.
You stand up and cup Moriarty in your hand. You'll miss being able to do this when he gets bigger.
Back around and over to your room, you find Safi sitting up in bed.
"Yo" You say.
"Hey" She says. "I was surprised to see that you weren't here when I woke up. Did you sleep somewhere else?"
"No, I slept here" You say.
"And you didn't wake me when you got up?" She asks.
"I figured you could use some more rest" You say.
"Well, I certainly feel rested" She says, as she stretches herself out.
You decide not to tell her about this morning's shenanigans just yet. You'll leave that until she's more awake.
Safi starts to sniff the air once she's done stretching. "Ooooo, that smells good" She says.
"Want to head down to the dining room now?" You ask.
"Yeah, just let me get dressed" She says. "I hope there's french fries. For some reason I'm craving french fries right now..."
You chuckle at that, and step out of the room.
You and Safi start walking down to the dining room once she's changed. While she was changing, you explained the situation to her.
"So we're teaming up with Claire, huh?" Safi asks.
"Yeah" You say. "She wants these guys gone as much as we do so i figured we should work together, at least for now"
"How in the hell do you fight people like that?" She asks.
"I dunno" You say. "I was hoping you might have some insight on that"
Safi hums as she thinks.
"Well, we've definitely got a better chance of beating them than Claire or Julia do" Safi says.
"How so?" You ask.
"We're the only ones left in this fight that can sense light magic" She says. "That makes us a danger to them"
"Do you think they know?" You ask.
"About our affinities?" She asks. "Not sure. It's not exactly easy to spot. The first time I saw you using it in the Arena, my first thought was that you were using body magic to speed yourself up"
"But couldn't you sense it?" You ask.'
"My senses weren't the best" She says. "Mind magic will mess with you that way. It was difficult to make things out over the feeling coming from the magic in my own head"
"Sounds rough" You say.
"It was" She says, smiling and squeezing your hand. "But now it's clear as day"
You smile back. "So we can sense their approach... but what if they use the tuner?"
"The Tuner is not so useful now" Tasha says, surprising both of you.
"What do you mean?" You ask.
"Did you not read the description?" Tasha asks.
"It erases sound and light" You say. "doesn't that mean we couldn't hear or see them?"
"It means that nobody will hear or see anything" She says. "You'd be walking down the labyrinth and suddenly everything goes black. Sure, that would let them sneak up on you. But it would also be a sure sign that they were coming"
"So if nobody can see or hear..." You say.
"That includes them" Tasha says. "They get the advantage of planning it out in advance, but that is a meager advantage at best"
"So why does that mean it isn't useful anymore?" You ask.
"Because before it might've taken you a moment or two to notice that there was no sound" Tasha says. "But you humans rely far more on your sense of sight, so it's much more noticeable when it suddenly disappears"
You nod. "So we-"
>Set up a trap
>Plan a counterattack
>Hit them first
We could agitate the creatures in the maze, using her golems (she'd be able to see them from that perch), and she could essentially make them swarm wherever she wished, since her golems can tear down the walls.
We can find some way to utilize Abby's new Cane ability (creating zones of anti gravity), by having her floating bombs/explosives into different places, make them think that they know where we are.
Hell, she might even be able to set up some anti grav traps, but I don't know 100% if it works like that.
>have abigail use magic to give them a target to find us.
>safi evacuates abigail & anyone else to a safe distance
>when they come, we trigger a huge bomb and drop into slowtime.
>claire can have a bunch of golems hidden away to get them if we miss one.
From above, we could have Claire focusing on one corner of the maze, using the golems/monsters.
Safi could focus on another section, using the Sketchpad.
We could leave Abby with explosives/grenades to chuck into another section with her anti-grav/aeromancy.
Saif could be on the ground, and straight suicide vest, if he runs into them.
"I could set a trap for them..." You say. "I dunno. I think it's too early to be setting any plans in stone anyway"
"Good call" Tasha says.
Before you can say any more, your attention is drawn to the patter of footsteps approaching.
"Breakfast" Zee says.
The three of you look at her, expecting her to say more. But she simply nods and scurries off, leaving you all hanging.
"Well, you heard her" Tasha says.
You and Safi both share a laugh as you continue on your way to the dining room.
"So where are you meeting her?" Safi asks.
"Meeting who?" Tasha asks.
"Claire" You say. "We're teaming up to take down the Sacred Mountain team"
"Ah" Tasha says. "I don't envy those two right now, though they did bring this upon themselves"
"As for where we're meeting..." You say with a shrug.
"You could invite her here" Tasha says. "I don't mind having more guests, so long as she doesn't stay too long"
"I was thinking that, or somewhere public" You say.
"You want to talk about the Arena in public?" Safi asks.
"Not public-public" You say. "Somewhere with enough privacy to talk, while still being public enough to make an attack a bad idea"
"Like a restaurant?" Safi asks. "I hear there's a good one down by the lakefront"
"Oh! I know that one" You say. "It's the one for mages, right? Abigail and I went to lunch there one time"
"Yeah" Safi says. "That would be a good place to go"
So you've got some options, but you still have to decide...
>Meet at that restaurant
"So it's cool if she comes here?" You ask.
"Hey, it's increasing your chances of winning" Tasha says. "Hand me your phone, I'll send her the address"
You pull your phone out and hand it to Tasha. She takes it and types something out, sends it, and hands it back.
"You're all set" She says.
"Did you just give her the address?" You ask.
"And a time to be here" She says. "I figure that 1ish works"
"Yeah" You say. "Thanks"
"Don't thank me, just stay alive" She says.
"Trying my best" You say.
The three of you enter the dining room. You're impressed by the spread that Zee put out. There's eggs, bacon, sausage, fries, even some fruit.
"Ahh!" Safi says, scooping up the young cook and hugging her. "Fries! Zee, you're my new favourite"
"Oh, Zee" Tasha says. "We're having another guest over for lunch"
"Roger" Zee says.
"No, I think her name is Claire" Tasha says.
"I don't think that's what she... nevermind. Let's eat" You say.
"Ahhh... delicious" Safi says, as she rests her chin on Zee's head.
She refused to let Zee go when it came time to sit down, so instead they just sat in the same chair. Zee didn't seem to mind, but you aren't sure if that's because she didn't know how to refuse, or if she doesn't mind the attention.
You think it's because she doesn't mind the attention, but it's hard to tell given her lack of expression...
Checking your watch, you see that it's 9:30 now. Still plenty of time before Claire arrives...
For now, you'll-
>Check in on Abigail
>Talk strategy some more
>Get some exercise
"I'm gonna excuse myself" You say. "I kinda want to check in on Abigail"
"Cool, tell her I said hi" Safi says.
"Need to go clean" Zee says.
"Aww... do you have to?" Safi asks.
"Yes" Zee says.
"Boo" Safi says.
You chuckle as you leave the room and pull out your phone. Abby's name is right at the top of your contact list, so it's not hard to pull her up and call.
"Saif?" She asks when she picks up.
"Hey" You say. "How's it going over there?"
"Fine" Abigail says. "What's up?"
"I take it you haven't seen the news" You say.
"What? Why?" She asks.
"Claire's house got hit, same as mine" You say.
"What?!?" Abigail asks. "Shit, I didn't know that. Thanks for the heads up. I'll have to get Chris to put our security on high alert"
"Good" You say.
"So how did you find out?" Abigail asks.
"I got a text from Claire at about 3am telling me to back off because the Judge and the Muse were her targets now" You say.
"What did you say?" She asks.
>I said okay
>I suggested an alliance
>Change the subject
"I suggested we work together" You say.
"I thought you might..." Abigail says.
"I know that you don't-"
"It's alright" She says. "It's... the best option..."
"I..." She trails off and sighs. "I think I'm done"
"Done what?" You ask.
"I want to surrender" She says. "No matter how you look at it, I'm the team's weakest link..."
"Don't say that-"
"It's true" She says. "The cane would be better off in yours or Safi's hands..."
You take a moment before responding.
"Is this what you really want?" You ask.
"What I want?" She asks. "I... I want to go to the Academy. I want to get married and have kids. I want to... to live"
Abigail takes a few deep breaths, and you can hear that she's on the verge of tears.
"I just... don't see that happening if I stay in this" She says.
"Remember what I told you about surrendering?" You ask.
"I don't think so..." She says.
"I said that if you ever think that you won't make it, then feel free to throw in the towel" You say.
Her next words come as barely a whisper. "Thank you"
"I guess I'll have to go see you at some point to make this official" You say.
Abigail sniffles. "I'll come around there" She says. "Just let me know when you're done with Claire. I don't really want to see her"
"I will" You say.
"And Saif?" She asks.
"Yeah?" You reply.
"I love you" She says.
"I love you too" You say. "I'll see you later"
DEATH FLAG TRIGGERED.
SO LONG ABBY, IT WAS GOOD KNOWING YOU.
Honestly, up until about night 5 of this quest i stuck by my oldfag prejudices against quests in general. But i got bored, read the archive, and I'm hooked now.
I still think most of them are trash, but some, like this one, are realky well written.
A master thief sneaks into a palace, under the guise of a servant, to steal the royal crown.
He befriends several people, including both princesses (one being the aforementioned Selene) before his planned heist.
I won't spoil too much for you, but Selene is a fucking cutey.
....I've been here a while. I remember when this was new.
Yea, i grew up on 4chan.
And it's always been terrible, it's just more cynical and less willing to try to do anything now.Though i actually missed 2008. Couldn't access from Iraq.
