Honestly, if you had approached me back before the Archie comic run had hit 50, I might have been interested. But the Sonic fandom is overrun with legitimate autism and make even furries look bad. First things first, this is not a Sonic game now , this is now Freedom Planet game, or just simply not!Mobius, which is pretty much opens us up to "cartoony anthropomorphic animals of unnatural colors going on action filled adventure of fighting evil lizards and robots". Pretty much exactly what Sonic OC game is but without most of bad fame.

Next up - more exaggerations and less "realism", Sonic running fast, Knuckles gliding in air, Tails flying with his tails and Cream flying with her ears are all very cartoony things that should stay that way. Avoid too serious and in depth explanations for things

Add a lot of humor and lightness to the stories without forgetting dark and sad stuff of course, but make it more contextual rather than aesthetic (don't talk about how dark and edgy things are, just lay out the facts and let the players make their own judgments on the situation)

I ran a game like that before actually. Its not a bad idea and can be rather cool if done correctly. More so if you base things off the comic books (By Ian Flynn, fuck penders)

I even had people look up their characters with Deviantart. It all works. Far as system, I'd suggest Savage Worlds. Has most of what you'd need. And its not a serious game considering how you gen characters...so just have fun with it, its honestly possible to be cool as long as the people going in are ready to play as Tidus and not Lightning.

It's old news, Anon. I'll try to give you a quick summary.

Sonic Boom comes out. Chris-chan's autism is triggered by it because Sonic's arms are not blue, apparently. Everyone kept telling him he was being silly, but things just continued to escalate in his own head.

He started a protest 'movement' to boycott Sonic Boom, and it eventually accumulated to the point where Chris started defacing Sonic Boom merchandise in Gamestop stores. He was banned, but he came back anyway to continue his 'protest'.

He fled the store when confronted by Gamestop employees, and pepper sprayed one of them on the way out. After being sued by said employee, it took nearly a year for the case to be settled with Chris getting away once again.

The aftermath is that Sonic Boom is still around and Chris's protests ultimately changed nothing, except getting him permanently banned from all Gamestop stores state wide.

I think the trick to this game is to have fun. No seriousness whatsoever, like the slapstick sonic cartoons/comics or Sonic OVA. Even during the serious moments, have that Saturday morning feel to it so it feels engaging rather than demanding.

The moment things get serious is the moment things get weird for everyone.

Yeah, SA2 was the tipping point for the Sonic fanbase. Personally I see no problem with the game by itself, in fact I feel that it is the best 3D Sonic (which isnt saying much, but still). I dont think it was the game's fault alone for triggering the fans, but instead the fanbase is a natural result of the game. Kind of like what is currently happening to Undertale, but that is a totally different topic.

Also, many will disagree with me on this but I love the art style, it is very jazzy, like the music.
