Just any random art from a mosque is a bit of a stretch, but rule of cool and some extra justification (relics, a specific slight, etc.) should see you through.

As for the rogue bit, the criminal who found god and reformed is an age-old character, and some of the countries with the highest catholic populations in the world are pretty damn violent and/or known for their criminals - Mexico, Brazil, Italy, Poland, Columbia, so it wouldn't exactly be hard to find someone with a roguish background who found religion - if they rose in the church in a troubled area they might well maintain their connections up to cardinalhood, and even use them to become prominent.
All while doing the Lord's work, of course
