>Lethality is higher than average for this quest, and will immediately end the game. No do-overs.
>I will roll when a roll is appropriate, to prevent ship-jumping over dice.

Your name is Vespillo Atius, and you, a young farmer captured in war by a cruel Amuliuan Empire, have come here to die to the sound of a roaring crowd.
Some luck, huh?

You're in a rank, dark room, sitting on a stone bench placed to the wall. There are 31 other men in this makeshift 'jail' stuck in the same situation as you, and they all smell like piss.
The arena's holding area tends to hold that scent. It also empties quickly.
A boy is in in the cell to your left, relatively short and a bit thin. He sits quietly with his eyes closed.
The one to your right is an old, fat man shaking the bars and begging to be released. Everyone seems to be trying to ignore him.

"'Ey, Chuckles, heads up!" one of the self-righteous guards chucks a finished apple at you from behind his side of the iron bars.
The core takes a tumble and lands at your feet, completely missing its intended mark. You raise an eyebrow sadonically.
"You were supposed to catch it. After all, you lot haven't got a lot of time to train. Just doing you a favor."
He laughs and moves on.

But perhaps your reflexes are better than he gives you credit for. What are your strengths and weaknesses?

>Clever but less strong

As you consider your skill set, you wonder how you could use it to your advantage.
You're going to have to fight, after all, whether you like it or not.
Relying on heavy weapons and savage blows isn't going to help you- you need to focus on staying alive and acquiring better equipment to keep you that way.
What really is the difference between a pitchfork and a trident, anyways?

A few men are taken outside before you, in pairs of two.
Every time they're taken out, only one returns. You realize that you're being paired off to kill one another.
After about four fights, the guard comes for you, with another man who looks like he runs the place.

You feel like you could take the guard if it was just him, but Mr. Large and in Charge is armed, stands half a head taller than you, and is built to break you in half.
He carries the keys, opens the door, and places them back on his belt, before pointing you into the hall.

"Get out here, now. You're up." His voice is a growl.

Gods know this is neither the place nor time to start a fight.
You wonder if people like him are the norm around here. You hope not.

Without protest or speech, you stand up, taking the apple core as you do.
The jailer seems a bit confused by your choice of action, but after examining the apple core, he hands it back to you.
"Enjoy your last meal." He then slaps you on the back, leading you out of the holding cells and into the arena, locking the door behind you.

Stepping into the light, you find yourself in a partitioned area of the Amuliuan arena, which is huge.
It's a pit, about four feet deep, in the shape of a slightly warped quarter-circle, and watched over by guards on the 'catwalks' from where they view the action. A few have bows, most have javelins.
You can feel the eyes of a thousand spectators on you, and see and smell the blood on the ground. Part of you believes that there is a fragment of liver in the largest spot.

The thug that holds the keys throws a short sword on the ground into your hands and watches two other guards bring out the sniveling man from before, the one from your right.
As the falls to his knees and begs to the leader, hands clasped. "P-Please. I haven't done anything wrong. I'll work for you, do whatever you want, but not this!"

Before stepping to the side of the arena and guarding the exit with two other guards, your jailer's reply is to kick an identical sword in front of your new opponent, who scrambles to pick it up and is only holding it in defense.
Both the jailer and the simpering man look at you, as well as the crowd.

>"I won't do it, you'll have to kill us both." Refuse the jailer.
>"Sorry, chum." Attack the crying man.
>"Can't I at least get someone that fights back?" Request a new opponent.
>"Stand up, you coward!" Demand the cowering fat man fight.

You didn't come here to die, and you're sure as hell not going to let this guy cry crocodile tears and stab you in the back.
Which is what he would have done, it seems, had you not held out your blade suddenly.

As he makes his first lunge and then backs off when he finds his neck dangerously close to your sword, he realizes that he has made a terrible mistake and lost the favor of the crowd for trying to trick you.
They boo at him, and the guards hoot and cheer you on. Someone from the stands throws cooked chicken at the fat man.
Your treacherous 'friend' is contemplating how to get out of this conundrum, so you'll be making the first attack.

Well, 'eye for an eye'- one low blow for another.
You quickly step into attacking range and stab him low- probably not low enough to castrate him, but definitely enough to get the point across- and in.

He is visibly bleeding and curses you in languages you don't understand, missing you with his swing, which goes wild despite him being so close to you.

The crowd definitely seems to be enjoying the bloodshed, at a soft roar, and you consider your next decision. You still have the initiative, but another attack like that might cause you to lose it.
Fat man seems to be turning red in the face, and seems about ready to charge.
The jailer is watching you two with disinterest, but the other guards seem enthralled.

Tired of being humiliated, fat man charges with a roar.
"I'm not dying here, you fucking pig! EAT SHIT!"
Swinging down with both hands, he intends to place his blade in your skull.

Well, he's not getting his wish.
He charges you multiple times, each time coming up with a miss.
He seems to rely on feints, but they don't work because you're too fast.
As the crowd laughs, you shrug your shoulders in a mocking pose, as if asking why he's bothering.
They cheer and throw you oranges- now inedible from the fall.

Huffing and puffing, our opponent wipes his brow, his eyes darting around the arena for anything he can use.
He's crouching now, trying to catch his breath. His sword is pointed at you, his other hand to the ground. It's clenched.
The crowd is cheering you on. You can hear them crying out for you to end this.

"Death! Death! Death! Death!"
Fat man grits his teeth again and tries to stand, failing.
The jailer looks at you like a master would a student, waiting on your answer to the question he just posed.

"Death! Death! Death! Death!"
Well, gladiator?

You step forward, arm back to deliver a strike to the neck.
As he sees you approach, he throws up his hand to toss sand in your eyes.
But you're prepared, and hold up your arm to block it as he stands up. After his attack misses, you throw the apple core at him and it bounces off his face.
As he's now partially standing, you kick his left foot out from under him. He falls onto his back, dropping his weapon as he does.

You kick his weapon away and stab the hand that he tried to blind you with.
He screams, and tries to toss dirt at you again, apparently not having learned a damn thing.
It fails this time as well, and you move up to his elbow. His whole arm is bleeding, and he's weeping again, this time likely out of pain and true fear.
"No, please, NO!" He struggles and clutches at your arm as you grip his neck, point poised for impact.

"DEATH! DEATH! DEATH! DEATH!"
The sound is constant in your ears, like a heartbeat during bloodrush.

You stab him in the neck, and almost immediately he begins to choke out, blood spurting from the area.
After a few seconds of pointless struggle with his left arm, he flails on the ground like a dead fish before finally drowning in his own blood.
His eyes roll back, and he coughs red once or twice before falling silent.

The crowd gives off a great cheer and a few whistles. There are more oranges, and one pegs you in the back of the head.
There's even another apple, one you can eat.

Despite the event, the jailer doesn't seem impressed.
He motions you back inside. "Come on, Hercules, let's get going."

Quickly picking up the apple and waving to where it came from, you begin to eat it before moving over to the jailer.
A girl from the crowd waves back and whispers to her friends.

Jailer rolls his eyes and pushes you back inside, while the sound of the crowd still rings within you, filling you with a hope despite circumstances.
Perhaps you could get used to this.
The apple is delicious, if a bit bruised, and you enjoy about two bites of the unblemished side.

As soon as the jailer unlocks your door, however, he snatches the sweet red fruit and hurls it down the hall, where it bounces past two surprised guards before rolling out of sight.
"Get in there. I'm not wasting time on a dead man walking."
Before you can listen to him and act, he shoves you inside, slams the door, and locks it, mumbling about "showboats who don't know the stakes".

After the door is secure, he barks an order to one of the guards and unlocks the next two prisoners.
They leave for a few minutes, and you're left alone.

"What happened?"
Or not.

Shrugging, you simply signal to the boy a general sense of confusion.
He seems confused himself by this. "What? Are you mute?"
You raise your shoulders again, and this boy seems to be more curious than angry. "Are you deaf AND mute?"
He peppers you with similar questions, vying for your attention, even tapping the bars between you, but you try to ignore him and focus on how you're going to handle your next fight.

Given that there will be sixteen of you left, at least ostensibly, and you've made the first cut, you wonder if you're going to be pitted against a person from this group again.

That old man was a slick bastard, if lazy and weak. Perhaps he used to be a politician?
But you need to learn from what he did.
>You'll be on guard for more dirty tricks.
>You are known by the crowd as slightly honorable though not recognized too strongly.

Perhaps you'll be given a time to train and strategize with the others, against another group.

The man from the cell across yours seems to be wondering something about you, before he is taken off to the arena.
After about one or two hours, (you can't tell time in this relative abyss) everyone seems to have been cycled through, and your jailer hammers on the bars with his hand.

"Alright, cows, time for your grazing. As usual, any tricks will result in painful stabbing directed at you."
As you're shuffled off into the hall, you're fed simple gruel made from cheap grain.
There are four tables, completely filled except for a few spots.

Given that the first two votes were a tie and the only ones within the 5-minutes...

>Get the apple as you leave
As soon as you pick up the apple, the jailer notices.
"You little BITCH!" He growls, preparing to draw his sword before thinking again. "You know what? This is fine."
He points at the man serving gruel. "Lebuin! This one gets a half portion!" Then, fuming, he turns backs back to you. "You like your apple so much? Have it!"
After that little upset, the jailer storms off, the guards blocking the door he leaves by quickly moving out of his way.

>You are now on the Jailer's Shit List, and everyone in your group knows it.
There is a tense silence before everything goes back to normal.
>Sit near the man
He seems to be impressed at what you just did.
"Wow... Now he's really mad. He must really hate apples." He smirks.

You nod silently and take your half of an already meager meal. At least the apple isn't completely ruined.
The man you saw across from you seems a bit impressed, but eats normally.
"So, are you really mute? How did you get captured? You put on quite a show just now."
Your new 'friend' seems to be sizing you up, looking for weaknesses or hidden strength.
The young boy can't find a seat next to you, so he looks at you from one of the nearby tables.

"You're quite a... unique fellow. Perhaps you'll end up outliving us all."
Your silence stumps him a bit, but he continues eating for a bit.
After a few minutes lacking conversation, he lowers his voice slightly. "If we can be in adjacent cells? I'd like to talk to you about something. A nod will suffice, if you must remain silent."

"Look at Senator Minimus here, and his quirky little silent friend. You planning an escape?"
One of the guards overhears this, and moves closer. "Something you want to talk about, gentlemen?"
The other three go silent immediately. You simply finish your apple. Delicious.
There's no more talk after that, and eventually, Jailer leads you back into your cells.

After he has done so, he clears his throat.
"Now, you maggots, you're going to be one-half of our show tonight. The other half is the other sixteen sorry bastards who survived in the OTHER corner of the arena.
"Just to make you feel a little more special, we're giving you all color-coded helmets."
He dumps them out on the floor, and they are scratched and worn beyond most use.
"You all are the green 'team'. The other set of unlucky fucks will be wearing orange. You are expected to kill them."

The Jailer takes a moment to let this set in before continuing. There are a few whispers and groans.
"If they run out of each other before you run out of your soddy little friends, you win. If you try to kill a green member, you will be executed by lion. If you try to switch helmets, you will also be executed by lion."
He stands and looks about the room. "Is that clear?"
The room basically mumbles a reply.
"Then you have five minutes to think it through. Take a helmet and a weapon. If there are no weapons left, steal one from a dead guy."

The doors slowly open, one by one. Yours is the last, and there are four pieces of equipment left for you.

Snatching up the trident and shield, you rush out to find your fifteen best friends in the world being led up a ramp into the center of the arena, a raised platform from which there are many ways to fall perilously.
It's getting later in the day, but the sun still grants clear light and sight.

On the other side of a line very recently drawn are those wearing orange helmets. Some are scared out of their minds, others are bloodthirsty.
The crowd is cheering, but when a man carrying a large horn steps up on a stage near the Emperor, the noise dies down.

There is a sense silence. Weapons and armor shakes. The jailer glares at you all, ready to have archers shoot anyone who flees.
"We're doomed, doomed!" One of the green side is in a full-blown panic.
The boy from the cell to your left stands by you with sword and shield, waiting for your action.
"Get ready." The man across from you is sweating under his helmet. "We can't let them break our ranks."
"Easy enough for you to say." A man carrying a heavy shield is shuddering slightly.
"No time to hesitate, no time to-"

The horn blows, and the crowd roars.
"Fuck it all!" One man on the right charges and takes half of your side with him, colliding directly with similarly charging enemies.

Not a lot of time to think. The air soon fills with blood, and the other half of the orange side charges you.
"Fresh Meat!" one of their bigger men says.
"Stay in formation!"
The man in he heavy shield shudders, about ready to flee. The other man, with two swords, braces himself.
"Damn you all, stay in FORMATION!"

You wait for an opening and then stab as soon as the big guy tries to rush you, intending to slow him down.
The trident does hit him, but not strongly enough to slow him down too much.
He's carrying two swords, but drops one to yank the trident out of his side.

"I'm not going down that easily, you little worm!"
The large man draws blood with a strike that barely gets past your shield, hitting the forearm carrying it.
Luckily, you neither drop your shield or are pushed back.

He's down to one sword, but he's bigger and heavier than you are, and your other allies are occupied.
The boy is fighting off a man a bit taller but just as reckless as the old man you fought before.
And the man you were talking to at dinner is dealing with a man with a trident like yours and a net.

However, your view is focused on the behemoth whose attention is on you.
He smirks with a toothy grin missing some parts, and rushes at you again.
"Let's go, rat! I'm gonna put your head on display!"

"Fight! Aren't you a man?"
Your adversary's attack glances off your shield as you consider the battlefield further.
By dropping one of his swords, your fellow has gotten rid of the net, but not before sustaining an injury.
The man with the trident is warding him off at range. The boy, however, has hamstrung his foe and has begun to attack your enemy as a result.

The child misses, but has gotten the attention of your opponent.
"Two rats, huh? guess I'll have to work harder to kill you both!"
The ginat of a man roars and misses the boy, who positions his shield near your side.
"You have a plan?" He asks.

"Help me, dammit! I need your range to get this guy off of me!" the man formerly across from you seems to be under a lot of pressure. His side is bleeding.
However, if you let up an assault on the giant, he might kill the child or even you.
Your arm aches as well, and is somewhat slick by this point. Perhaps it's time to be selfish.

Motioning to the kid, you give him a sign to help two-swords.
You can handle this thug yourself.

"Pretty brave- but still dead!" He circles around your trident, leering at you, trying to scare you into dropping your guard.
You wait for another opening, and find one large enough to stab him in the kidneys.

Now he's bleeding for real, and furious.
"I'll choke you to death with my own two hands! There won't be anything left of you when I'm done!" As his sword falls another time, you block it with your shield.
This causes a pan of pain in your arm, but you can deal with it.

Thankfully, the man with the trident seems to have great issues with keeping up with two warriors at once, and the other fights seem to be going pretty evenly.
Clutching his side, the giant seems to be trying to bat your trident away while recovering.

You've got a temporary advantage, but you yourself are getting tired.
Two good hits by him and you're toast.
Hopefully, that's not happening.

The crowd still seems loud and excited, but you're too focused on second-to-second survival to care.
Your shield arm is still bleeding, and you're losing focus- this fight needs to end, and soon.

You don't have time to think up a clever strategy, or at least not enough to execute it.
Instead, you focus on hurting him more, so you can take at least a temporary breather.

Despite his carefulness, he's not prepared for the jab into his shoulder- the one clutching his side.
He howls in pain- even his tough skin can't stop a well-placed puncture.
His arm contorts, he roars, and slams his sword into your shield again.
Your arm is really sore now, and you feel like you're about to drop your shield altogether.

However, just as you're about to resign yourself to losing your best defense, a cry of pain is sent up by the enemy net-carrier and two-swords snatches something off of the ground.
"Hey, jackass, you dropped this." He picks up the sword the giant dropped and pants, taking a fighting stance. Two-swords looks hurt, and he knows it.
Your giant opponent sees it as well, and faster than the kid can react, he lashes out at your ally.
"I'll take ONE of you to Hell with me!"

Can you count on your ally to live through this?

>Block the attack
>Strike the giant down while he's exposed, even if it means the attack goes through
>Let two-swords handle this- if he wins, he'll be showered with glory

Just blocking giants attack seems too risky. Would body slamming+striking at same time, disrupt his attack?

The die has been cast.

You focus on finding a weak point, and when the giant jumps to attack, you drive your trident into his neck with a sickening *shlorp* sound.
Despite the crowd and the roar of battle, all goes silent in your mind as your foe looks down in realization and collapses, falling off of your trident and rolling back onto the ground, eyes wide open in disbelief.

Your eyes go out of focus for a second, and you take a quick set of breaths to calm yourself.
When you find the courage to look to your left, you see the child clutching at you.
"Are you all right? You look faint!"

And as you turn to see your other ally...
He looks back at you with concern, the stress leaving his body.

The rest of your group seems to have dealt with the orange crew.
Suddenly overcome with tiredness, you think over the men that have died by your hand today, and breathe in deeply.
After a while, you follow the surviving green members back to your cells.
Whatever anger the jailer had is worn off either by time, or perhaps sympathy.

You look at the cell across from you and find it empty.
Two-swords gives you a thumbs up from your right.
But your concerns slowly fade into sleep, the dead and living alike fading from your mind.
There was nothing more you could have done. Some people must die.
It doesn't make you feel much better.

Next time, then. I'll make a Twitter.
