Quest time! Here's the deal. You're a student at a prestigious magical university, in medieval times. Whether you're a good student or not, the fact that you gained entrance to this school is a mark of prestige in and of itself. After completing two years of your education, you've settled into your chosen field and you're looking forward to your upcoming exams as a chance to show off your knowledge and ability, when a friend comes up to you and asks for your help performing an intricate summoning ritual. (Alternately, you could do the ritual if your chosen 'major' is summoning).

Something goes wrong, either one of you wrote an inverted symbol or you picked the wrong lei line or something, because instead of summoning an ancient mystic from the past to converse with, suddenly you find yourself in a strange new place where everyone is wearing ridiculous clothes (especially the women), the air tastes like piss, and you swear you just saw a giant metal dragon flying overhead.
Luckily, your friend thought to include a layered translation spell, so you can understand people, but that might not be much help when several people in full armor, including dark black reflective masks, start surrounding you, and you realize you're at the bottom of a small, smoldering crater.
But before we get to the fun stuff lets work out who we are, and get some basic world building out of the way.
Ideas for technology level and your own magic welcome. I was thinking a system based somewhat on Fairytale, where there's action based and item based magic, each with subcategories. Of course, once you pick your focus you're locked in for the ride, as you will ahve to rediscover magic on your own once in the future.
>>
>>34281474
are we getting choices or is this an open discussion?
>>
>>34281527
Open discussion is welcome. If you want choices, My current theory for magic goes like this
I)Action based
Instants, sorcery, ritual.Which are versatile, with increasing power and time needed
II) Focus based
Summoning, enchanting, potions/Alchemy

Of course this is still in the early stages.
Feel free to start throwing out full characters as well

Necromancer.
Hybrid Action/Focus type magic. You use your own magic, channeled through various foci in order to reanimate corpses of dead beings and to summon ghosts. You have some ability to communicate with the dead without a focus, but your magic grows in potency if you have the right tools.

Because of your choice to become a necromancer, you are both valued and scorned in the University community. It is not a common art, which makes your investiture something noteworthy. But you're also working with the dead, and that puts most people off.

Because of this, you've been mostly isolated for most of your time at the university, with a few close friends you've gathered over the years that have proven true to you. The summoner who created the ritual is one such friend. He brought you in to create a binding enchantment for the spirit he wanted to summon.

Your primary focus is a single object that you channel your power through, if broken or lost it can be replaced with relative ease. One caveat is that your focus must be organic, ether wood, bone, or something similar in order to channel your magic. Metal cannot be used.
>>
>>34281901
How big does our focus have to be? Could something alive, like a pet, be our focus?
>>
>>34281901
Make it a war horn, fits the era and makes our summoning of swarms that much better.

A living focus is a familiar. They exist, but our familiar wasn't with us when we time jumped. Getting a new familiar is a long process, finding an animal that you have some connection with, training it, gradually exposing it to your magic, and eventual it develops a basic level of intelligence. Having an active familiar boosts your mana pool and allows you to complete rituals that involve two people, as long as the second 'person' doesn't have to do anything too complicated for an animal to accomplish.

So, no animal foci at this time, we can get one later with some work, but that will probably come after we figure out how to not get thrown into prison or deported. The modern world is much harsher on people with no identification these days. A basic necromancy focus can be anything that comes from a living being, a staff, a wand, a thigh bone, a human skull or heart (for those with dark purpose). Bigger does not always mean better, bones from different animals and trees have differing effects, and the most important aspect of a focus is how much effort you've put into it and how long you've had it. Your focus can gain 'experience' just like you can.

And of course we still have our current focus with us after the timeshift. It's a bit battered but still serviceable. We can vote on that to.

Warhorn works. So for the record we want to be a wasp necromancer? Seems odd, but okay, I can dig it. As a side note, we might have to switch to mosquitose once entering the modern era. Now that's frightening.
>>
Right, so we are a Necromancer specializing in plagues and our primary focus is a warhorn. Since this thread doesn't have much of a base yet, I'm just going to do the character design myself and start off the quest. If anyone has character suggestions, pitch them in now, otherwise, writing.

You are Simon Galt a young man with long dark black hair, pale skin, and blue eyes. You are a first generation mage from a no name village on the borders of a small country. Your time in the village was peaceful, your father was a farmer and your mother took care of the house, which means you and your clutch of siblings. You were the oldest, and by proxy the most responsible, often helping your mother around the house. You like to think your serious personality helped you in your studies as a mage, leveled the playing field some considering you had to learn how to read when you were first taken on by a traveling mage as an apprentice.

You discovered your magic by accident, by reanimating a dead raven which revealed your predilection towards necromancy. Most mages have a specialization or two which they can choose between rather quickly, and some can fall into any field. You're own type of magic was set from the beginning, and your master helped you develop basic skills and build your first focus before sending you off to the mage's college at the age of eighteen. Because of your choice to become a necromancer, you are both valued and scorned in the University community. It is not a common art, so your growing skill at it was something worth nurturing. But as always, the living scorn those who work with the dead, fearing them for what they might do.

You are no exception to this rule.

Your one friend is a young man names Gellart Porter, a summoner who was a year ahead of you and saw you for your talent, and your person, not for the scorned title of 'necromancer'. So when he asks you to develop a binding to house a dead spirit for his summoning ritual you agree whole heartedly, not to mention it doubles as your own final in necromancy and ritual.

You both set up in a large empty room that the campus provides for these types of rituals, your job is to create a small array inside the larger summoning circle which will bind and support the ghost. You both work quickly, tossing chalk back and forth with ease: "Pass me the goats blood Gell... and the sponge."
"What, can't do this right in one try?"
Everything works out fine, and you take your place at the opposite side of the summoning circle from Gellart. "Double checked everything yet?" You ask impatiently, "I actually want to eat dinner tonight, if you don't mind."
He rolls his eyes. "Shut it Simon" he replies good naturedly. "Unless you want to end up inside the circle."
After a few moments he looks back up and takes his stance. "Alright, everything looks right, lets get this over with." A look of concentration comes over his face, and you see the outer lines of the array light up as he pours mana into them, you kneel at the edge of the circle, and push your own magic in.

And then the world erupts.

If you were to try and describe the experience, you'd have to say it was alot like smelling what the color purple tasted like. With a healthy dose of pain thrown in as well.

And it's some time later you wake up on a hard rough surface, blood oozing from your scalp, with the taste of something dead in your mouth. You eyes blink rapidly as the world flashes and spins, and slowly, painfully, you push yourself into an upright position. That's when you notice that you're surrounded by several... figures, they could be golems for all you know, with jet black armor and reflective face plates, all of whom are pointing some type of metal cylinders pointing at you.

Looks like it's you and me against the world anon. Lets see if we can't attract a few others.

Whatever these things are, they don't look friendly, and you aren't about to turn yourself over to them just like that.

But you aren't a fighter, you've never been. In fact, you've actively avoided combat magic in order to make people more comfortable around you, for all the good that did.

So you're going to go with option "Get the hell of out of dodge". Just as soon as your head stops spinning...

Slowly, you climb back up to your feet, making a big show of staggering and being a moment away from collapse at each moment. Your head, after the initial spell of dizziness, clears quickly, and you eyes catch a small break in the golems' formation that you can exploit. With one last over articulate stagger, you brush your hand against your horn, blasting your surroundings with a burst of shadow and you suddenly dart forward past the two guards. The random onlookers gasp, but then you're into the darkened opening between two buildings, you take a few random turns before reaching an intersection.

You can hear the footsteps of pursuer's you only have a second to make a choice.

You

[] conceal yourself with shadows against the wall roll 1d10
[] blindly rush down the alleys trying outrun the golems 1d20
[] you can see a glass tower in the distance, try and make your way to it, maybe there's a wizard there.

You take a deep breath and push your back up against the hard wall of... something... and you yank your horn from your hip and bring it up to your lips.

The spell of concealment is already in your head, you don't have time to botch this one, gathering your mana, you place your lips against the horn and blow
.
Instead of sound, solid darkness issues forth, like the essence of ghosts it flows over you, making your form ethereal, basically replacing your own presence with that of a passing shade. It isn't perfect invisibility, but it will have to do.

There's less than a full rei in between you and the opposite wall, suddenly you realize that even if you go unseen, if one of the golems brushes up against you, they'll be on you in a heartbeat. But no time to change your mind now, You just close your eye and push yourself farther back into this foul stinking corner.

You can feel the puffs of air as your pursuers dart past... and then they're gone, splitting up and delving deeper into the darkness.
You feel a grin broke over your face. You made it!

Well, the more pragmatic side of your answers. No you didn't. You're still stranded in the middle of this impossible city, no idea where you are. At least you and Gellart though to add a translation array to the summoning ritual, so you should be able to talk to the people here.

Maybe
.
If you're lucky.

With a sigh you dismiss the spell, cursing yourself for being such a devout pessimist. But in all reality, you really do have to come up with a plan.

What do you do?

[] Head for the glass tower, there still might be a wizard there... or something
[] find a tavern or the equivalent. Your travels taught you that information can be found there
[] wander randomly.

Notes: A Rei is about about three feet/1 meter.

We have no bloody idea where we, or Gellart, are. It's possible that the summoning circle only affected you, there's also a chance his body was consumed to power the spell.

Or he could be around the next corner.

Our clothes are rather traditional wizard's garb. Soft wool breeches, a black tunic, and a brow leather belt from which our horn hangs. Over all of this we have an open red cloak with black trim, to show our status as a student and a necromancer.

Needless to say no one else is wearing anything like it, but due to the sheer oddity of some other clothing choices (think if lady gaga became a fashion designer) we won't be accosted because of how we're dressed

The tower is too nice of an option, for all you know the wizard that may or may not be there, though only a wizard could make a tower so tall, might be the reason you're trapped here in the first place. Everything is so different that you also decide you wouldn't know what a tavern looked like if it came up and bit you.

In the end, the deciding factor is that you are so. bloody. lost. that trying to find your way again will only confuse you more.

This is a common symptom of magic.

So, wandering randomly it is, maybe some helpful stranger will come along and just happen to know exactly what your problem is!
Gods... even in your head that sounds sarcastic.

So you make your way back to the street, ditching you cloak on the way, it's to recognizable and you don't really have much love of the college anyway. The one thing you notice, that you utterly missed before due to you hast to run away, is the sheer amount of illusions.
They're EVERYWHERE. It seems like the side of every building and within every pane of glass there is a flat illusion playing, either with some esoteric screen or with a person talking and unfamiliar characters scrolling across the screen.

It's on one of these illusions, which really, must be enchantments of some sort because you can't imagine a mage standing by just to maintain it, you see a blurry picture of yourself evading the golems from earlier.

You wince, but it's not all bad. The image of you is poor, and the most recognizable aspect of you is the cloak you already abandoned, but still...

[] You decide to try and cast a basic illusion on yourself, you can do them... kind of (1d20 illusion skill -5 to al rolls)
[] Go for the non magical route and try to get some clothes
[] Ignore it and keep wandering, everyone else is dressed like a maniac anyway.

You decide to err on the side of caution, in both trying to disguise yourself and not pushing your meager skill at illusions. Instead you head into a place that must, simply must, be a place that sells clothing.
You get stopped at the door.
No, no, there aren't any problems with someone stopping you, or god forbid, the doors themselves.
There's just... so much. Of it. Of clothes, and things that can't really be called clothes but seem to be trying for the title.
There are even little stationary golems, some headless which makes you shudder, dressed in the clothes of all things. As if to show them off.
There are roes and roes of every sort of garment under the sun in every possible color and in so many different sizes you think you might drown. Except there's nothing you are familiar with.
So this... thing, with odd buttons on the front and these tight... sleeve things, must be a shirt, and it looks like it fits.
There are these much tighter versions of breeches, you pick out one.
And it doesn't come with a draw string? Is this place forcing you into tighter clothing? Of all the humiliations.
And over there looks to be-
Nope. No. You are NOT going over there, not even if there was a portal back home in the middle of it. Well, maybe if there was that... but there isn't, so no. Away.
It's then that you realize that, bombarded by the sheer scale of this place, you completely forgot something quite simple.
You can't pay.
>>
You don't even know if this place takes currency or if it's barter based. Though by looking around the front of the store you gather that they use some kind of money... base on paper.

Yet another thing you just don't understand. You wait a few minutes to see if anyone barters or offers a trade, you tunic is made of very fine fabric after all, but no one does. It's all these small slips of paper... and sometimes small shiny cards, which are put into a slot before returned.

Now, maybe if you could get yourself one of those cards... but... thievery of any sort just doesn't sit right with you. Your parents raised to you be a good upstanding man, and pilfering money, even in these desperate straits, just doesn't seem right.

All the same, you need new clothes somehow.

[] Try and pickpocket someone. With a nice touch of magic, it would be so easy, just this once...
[] Call in a swarm of locusts and darkness and run for it
[] Stand around, maybe something will go your way.

You decide that, if you have to steal, it won't be from some innocent bystanders. These clothes you need, the money, you don't, not one bit.

You slip away from the more crowded section of the store, into a corner where no one else can see you. Then you take a few moments to prepare yourself, knowing that if you're going to do this, you have to do this right. You softly pull your horn out of its strap, cradling it gently.

As you run your magic through it you can feel knew fault lines in you focus, obviously there as a result of the ritual, and you grimace, this horn won't last you much longer, especially after this spell.

You'll have to make a new focus soon.

Gathing your mana you lay out the spell in your head, turning it into a plea to the gods of death and darkness, you lift the horn to you lips.

This time, instead of shadows, a low and mournful call issues forth.

For a moment, nothing happens. Then the shadows begin to rise. All around you in a growing radius every single shadow begins to writhe and bubble, like there's something beneath, something pushing at the surface.

The others in the store are noticing now, and screams of shock and alarm, along with gasps of surprise fill the air.
Their terror fuels the spell, and in a moment the shadows burst upwards, releasing the hosts of the damned.

A swarm of locusts, the lowest reincarnation of souls, all made of shadow tear through the store, the screams grow even greater now, becoming almost deafening. And you feel a moment of regret, but enough.

You run to the back of the store, blowing through two metal doors before ending up behind the store in another dark and narrow pathway. With a sigh, you start walking

You're just about to turn the corner when a hand darts out a grabs your wrist. "Wait!"

You turn in surprise, your eyes catching on a breathless young woman, clearly chasing after you. She's wearing a blue tunic, with buttons down the front and a small plaque over her left breast, you read [Sybil Extersis] and under that [security guard]. The two unrelated words make you weary, but this girl looks like the epitome of harmless.

Especially with her bublegum pink hair, that must be the result of a potion.

Then she looks up at you, eyes wide with not a small amount of awe and fear. "How one earth did you DO that?" She asks. "I mean, I only saw it on the security cameras, but one second it was just you and that weird horn thing. And then Shadows!" She shivers once. "Did someone hack the cameras? They shouldn't be able to do that and-"

You tone out the rest of her babbling to focus in on a single though. She saw you use your magic. More importantly, she saw you call forth Hell's minions, which is definitely a crime.

Even if it isn't a crime here. You're in bad shape, she saw you, she knows your odd. You have to do something.

You growl internally at this entire world. One crazy situation right after another, each as ridiculous and absurd as the last. They don't need listing, and this little scene could be right out of one of Aeschylus's plays.

But still, there's something good about this whole situation, you just need to reach out and take it.

"Walk with me." You say, channeling all of your imperiousness into a single word, which isn't much, but it seems to be enough for this girl. And her mouth snaps shut immediately as she trails after you, the patter of her feet marking time as she tries to catch up to your longer strides.

"You want to know what I did in there?" You ask, looking forward as a small smirk forms on your face. You're selling a part now, she can't see for a moment how desperate you are, how much you need her help.

You have to make her need you.

"I could tell you. Perhaps." You take random turns down the alleys, making sure not to hesistate for a second. "Or I could just wipe your memories of anything odd happening, go back and deal with the cam-eras, and be on my merry way."

She seems indignant at that. "You could-" She gasps. "No way! I won't let you do something like that." She says, glaring at you, apparently this one likes following the rules.

You shrug. "You say that like you could stop me." You hold up a hand, forestalling her reply. "But that would be so, utterly, boring. You on the other hand, are very interesting..." You trail off suggestively.

"I might consider telling you." You whisper. Then you stand suddenly and continue walking. "But not here."

"Reading minds requires consent." You say flippantly. "Breaking them is just a matter of applying too much pressure. Don't push me little girl."

Maybe it's the little girl remark, or maybe it's that you've overplayed your role, but her frown turns onto a full on glare. "You're lying." She says angrily. "That's it, tell me how you hacked the cameras." She pulls out a small device and points it at you. "Or I'll knock you out and call the police! I'll accuse you of robbery too! So talk!"

You almost chuckle. Like having a robbery charge makes much of a difference at this point. If she calls the police you're probably going to die, or they'll throw you in the dungeons and let your rot for a while. A whole slew of unpleasant things could happen, so that really isn't an option.

Well, plan B. You wave your hand at her, resting your other palm upon your war horn. With just a little -pull- she gasps once, eyes rolling back up in her sockets, and she collapses to the ground with a thud. You quickly move to check her pulse, steady if a bit weak, you didn't overdo it.

So now you're back where you started, except now someone else has seen you and knows what you can do, a little bit. If you leave her here she'll undoubtedly call the police, whatever those are. Probably the golems from earlier.

You figure that at this point you have a few options, none of them good.

[]wait for the girl to wake up and try to recover your act. You should probably take the device too.
[]kill her and take her soul. Nothing to lose now, she was going to get you killed one way or another
[] take the device and run

I'm rather interested in more of this Argent. You should make a twitter or something so I can catch the next thread. I'm really liking where this is going.

and anything else she has on her that aren't clothes

Ate dinner, am back, writing. I guess I have a bit more work to do tonight.

You quickly pull the device from her limp hands. Unlike normal death, which causes the body to go stiff, separating the soul and the flesh, for a moment at least, causes the muscles to relax and go limp. If full death proceeds from this the body then stiffens in this new position. You shake your head and focus on the task at hand, exposition can come later.

You check the odd pouches in her clothing and pull out another device, this one in a pink casing with... kittens? On it... dare you even ask what manner of eldritch horror this is? It looks like a monster from psychotic's dream, with only the barest resemblance to a... cat of any sort.

You shiver, but finish up searching, aside from these two devices, and a small folded object made of some sort of leather you find nothing.

Well, in for a penny in for a pound. You stand up, dust off your clothes and summon some shadows in order to appear more intimidating. You take a moment to gather yourself, rehearsing your lies and generally gathering your confidence for this next part. You also place your stolen clothes on the ground, no point in looking like a servant. Then, reaching out with your magic, you give her the equivalent of a spiritual poke, instantly rousing her from her slumber.

She sits up groggily, rubbing her eyes as she looks around with a cute and rather dimwitted expression on her face.

You laugh.

When she catches sight of you she sits bolt upright and turns her best glare on you.

And you, who have seen death's face at least once, really don't find it all that intimidating. Instead, you merely smirk down at her, with a cocked eyebrow. Silently asking her if she's going to behave. With a huff she's stands and looks off to the side awkwardly. "Can I have my stuff back...?"

conti.

She keeps sneaking glances to where three tendrils of shadows are juggling the objects you took from her pockets. And you ponder a response.

[ ]Give it all back but the device, you have to keep yourself safe.
[ ] "Maybe after we get to your appart-ment"
[ ] Laugh at her. "Move."

Gonna do one or two more responses tonight. I plan on picking this thread up again tomorrow at 2pm EST. Give me some time to set up a twitter

You say with a small smirk, "Lead the way Sybil, unless you really want me to rip apart your mind..." You trail off suggestively. She huffs again, straightening out her clothes, and by the gods those shorts are a bit shorter than you remember. But enough of that, you're moving, and hopefully in the right direction this time.

You do make sure to grab the clothes off the... odd black bumpy material that goes for ground these days before you follow.

As you walk down the alleys you take a moment to yank off your tunic and pull the new shirt over your head. Sybil glances at you with an annoyed frown at your face, but otherwise says nothing. She doesn't seem too impressed with you rather scrawny frame. But hey, years of books and research undid all of the muscle you build while working on the farm.

If you're going to be running a lot, and you probably are. It might be a good idea to get some of that conditioning back up to par. The average mage would scorn any thought of physical label, but you hardly want to call yourself average.

Especially after this odd displacement. You still don't know where you are by the way.

But at least you know where you end up, to some extent. After entering Sybil's appart-ment, which really just turns out to be a small room in the middle of an oddly shaped tower, you take a moment to relax and you close the door behind you. After a few moments you manage to puzzle out the that the door locks itself, and you let it do just that.

You're done for the day, officially bushed, and any questions that Sybil has can wait till morning. You'll remember to tell her that smothering you in your sleep would actually be a favor with the week you've been having.

Damn, you didn't used to be this snarky or disrespectful. It must be the circumstances.

Then you hear a harsh whine, something pokes you in the side, and an incredible jolt of pain rushes through you body, stealing all control of you limbs. As you collapse to the ground in a twitching heap, you have one last thought before the darkness claims you.

'Was that... lighting magic?'

And that's a wrap. See you all tomorrow. Bring friends! XD
