While you would defend with a line of 5, you wouldn't attack with a line of three players able to score. Trust me I tried. I generally use the 5-4-1 Diamond only when I need to defend a lead. Usually it's a 3-4-3 Diamond. In Europe I'd play a 4-1-4-1 more often than not however.

The issue with IWBs of course is that when you defend you just have a line of 5 and no midfield; I wish I would ask the AMC to drop and form a line of four with the >wongas and the DLP(D) but alas, this is not PES.

Yeah, basically. I previous FMs you would ask your CMs to man-mark the oppositions' wingers, but then if they're WPs, IFs or W(S) or even DW(S), or if they don't have wingers at all; well it doesn't work at all.

It's something that completely ticks me off in FM: the impossibility to have an attacking and a defensive formation. Either you want IFs/RMs and they don't defend, either you don't and you don't have access to these roles. They have no business being in the AML/R slots at all anyway since no fucking team in the world defend in a 4-3-3 with three players dicking around upfront.

I had the same problem and it wasn't even all that great in defence, I tired drooping wing backs a bit further back so that there would be 5 defenders in a line,but AI would still get between WB and CD and cross the ball inside.

Wingers on Attack, Very Fluid (you have to use Very Fluid). More often than not I play a DLP(D) in the DM strata instead. My CF(S) doesn't move into channels, and sometimes I use him on an Attack duty to have a focal point for my attack instead of him drifting into the horizon. My CM(S) don't get further forward nor move into channels, they stay slightly back since you already have potentially four offensive players. I prefer a AP(A) to a AM(A). I generally prefer the AM(A) role, but the playmaker bias prevents >Wengers from doing very, very stupid shit, and the AP(A) doesn't get further forward by default, which allows for a bit more elbow room for the other players.

You use Very Fluid because in a formation with glaring issues (basically very weak against three or four man attacks like 4-2-3-1, which is everywhere in FM17), you need all your players to commit to every phase of play instead of having a stiffer system where you'd want player to do what they're asked to and nothing else. There's a time and place to use more structured formations, but I personally always use at leas Flexible if not Fluid or Very Fluid.

They're worse than they used to be, but you're not looking to defend deep: if your pressing failed you're in trouble. I'd usually use retrained FBs or WBs instead of "actual" wingers. You really need the right players: a good bundle of Aggression, Bravery, Team Work, Work Rate and some Det can help massively when it comes to get the fucking ball back. You'd usually use a 3-4-3 Diamond against 4-4-2 and variants (except 4-2-3-1 because FM).

The key is to have good CBs actually. They need ot be somewhat decent on the ball or at the very least have the mentals that will prevent them from fucking up. They should be pretty quick too. Stuff like pic related would be ideal, even if he wasn't my best CB in that save. His Anticipation is low, but he can jump, is good enough on the ball not to fuck up, has good enough mentals not to fuck up (Composure, Decisions, Concentration), and can intercept balls without having to tackle and fall to the ground (somewhat weak Anticipation but good Positioning, Acc/Pace).

Actually it's more important that they don't mentally fuck up rather than being able to play a perfect pass. 20 Passing and Vision are pointless with 1 Composure and Decisions. At least with the other way around you could still ask them to play Short Simple Passes (it's a PPM) if your DLP(D) Comes Deep To Get Ball (or/and if you Play Out Of Defence).

You can get away with very passable CBs technically speaking if their mentals are nice, they can jump and run fast. Which is globally why you need quite specific players to pull of a 3-4-3 Diamond. Which is why Cruyff relied extensively on the Masia since the kids are used to play it and were developed around it. That's also one of the reasons why I prefer buying young players to train them properly (especially since the AI isn't as good as a human player at developing youngsters).

Can you clarify one thing regarding for me, please? How much do attributes actually matter, when it comes to playing Fluid or Very Fluid shapes?

I read somewhere that Fluid or Very Fluid shapes are generally meant to be played with good teams - teams that are capable of playing Total Football. This is why I'm always kind of torn between wanting to play a Very Fluid shape for the reason that you explained and managing a lower-league side with poor mental attributes, that I really don't trust to be able to switch positions and fill in for each other.

I usually take my team's Teamwork and Flair into consideration when it comes to this. Do you do the same, or is Team Shape really as simple as explained in Ozil's guide and I shouldn't care about my team's attributes too much when picking it?

I understand that Fluid and Very Fluid shapes give players more creative freedom, but at least you can sort of control that with the Be More Disciplined and Be More Expressive shouts.

If they had a good performance but aren't consistent, go for the talk on why they can't play like that often enough. Team talks are contextual, so blast them off every time there's a reason to do it.
