30 worst all-time winning percentage teams by conference:

AAC: 5
ACC: 2
B1G: 2
B12: 3
CUSA: 2
MAC: 4
MWC: 4
PAC12: 2

there must be a minimum number of games played, Charlotte and UTSA have been FBS less than five years, FAU+FIU less than then.

UTEP, of course, sucks out loud.

Who do you see winning the BXII if not Texas? And I admit LSU is a bit of a stretch, but I'd go with that considering how much defensive talent Bama lost to the NFL this year.

Lol it's okay friend, it can't be denied that urban is one of the best coaches around and OSU attracts some of the best talent while he is there.
He has a few foils and we do shit our own pants once in awhile but as of right now we are one of top 3 teams
>>
>>77336447
Meh. Things change.

CUSA at 7 is the outlier because THREE teams weren't even playing FBS football four years ago, and FIU and FAU haven't made the best of the transition.

Factor out the newfags, they're on par with the list. Factor in which teams needed a while to stock up on conference revenue, and 2017 will be pretty fucking badass.

Even without Stoops, OU is still the favorite in the Big 12. They recruit on another level than the rest of the conference has recently plus they return a good QB and the whole offensive line. I'd give Oklahoma State and Kansas State, in that order, better odds of winning the Big 12 this season than Texas. I might even put TCU above Texas in 2017. Herman was a great hire but he isn't turning Texas around from 5-7 in 2016 to winning the conference in 2017. They are a QB injury away from struggling to earn bowl eligibility.

So did the Shutdown Fullcast podcast. 2007 was wild. WVU < Pitt changed the whole course of college football in some ways.

>my team's strangest season

Maybe 1999, just because of the destruction of Hurricane Floyd. The biggest game of the year, against #9 Miami, wasn't even played at ECU because the stadium had 12 feet of floodwater go through it.

Despite that, it was a 10 win season (with the typical "baffling mid-season loss" to UAB that ECU has patented).

Tbh 1998. Nobody expected the Vols to win the Natty much less do it going undefeated. You think Peyton Manning would've brought a championship to Rocky Top but nope it was led by some solid players in Peerless Price, Tee Martin, Jamal Lewis (until he got injured), Al Wilson, Jeff Hall, Chad Clifton, Travis Stephens, Shawn Bryson, Travis Henry, Billy Ratliff, and whole bunch more. What team lacked in big name, Heisman-candidate stars, it made up for in raw talent.

It also gave us one of John Ward's best calls.

As a Clemson fan, 2006
Sure it went like every Bowden season (Win when it didn't matter, lose when it did) but we lost to Boston College because of a missed extra point, then beat Florida State on the road
We were down 9-6 late 2nd quarter because of a returned blocked PAT and a returned blocked fg.
And then we beat the tar out of Georgia Tech which never happens like it should. (Calvin Johnson had 0 catches)
And then we lost to Maryland after not scoring a touchdown
And then I watch my first loss to Carolina
>>
>>77348746

USF, but maybe a surprise Memphis team.

If Memphis runs the table, they have even more strength of schedule, and a win over an undefeated USF in the CCG would be the cherry on top.

>Arizona Bowl

Yep, that was the Air Force game

Also, I have to admit, the everyday college football bukkake of bowl season is pretty damn great when I'm on winter break. I'm not complaining.

>Hell, I watch all the mid-week MACtion games once they start playing in October.

>>

Also lots of Wednesday night MACtion

http://coachingsearch.com/article?a=College-footballs-Wednesday-night-schedule-in-2017

Eventually in the fall, there's football every night, either college or NFL.

It would absolutely suck to be a MAC fan.

Basically no weekend games.
>>
>>77352743

Not only are they the C - Unwanted Schools of America, but also the unwanted coaches to boot.
>>
>>77352850

The midweek games are the only reason I even watch MACtion.

EMU's gray field is visually interesting on TV, and breaking down the cinder block wall as they go on the field is kawaii. I'm a low key fan just because of their silly-but-endearing traditions and field.
>>
>>77352850

>>
>>77352743
Are they gonna make the playoff?
No

Are they gonna compete with Boise State?
Probably not

Doesn't mean these teams can't be fun as hell
I'm particularly excited by Lane Kiffin's return to the spotlight
It's basically the FBS version of Last Chance U
They even have Clint Trickett on the roster
>>
>>77352950
I'm not sure how much that affects it given how Thursday night games go
>>
>>77352950
>>77352850
This.

No weekend games and you'd have to take off work early to make it if you live more than an hour away
>>
>>77352950

To be fair, their attendance never stood a chance. I think I saw one of the MAC fields with a track around it on TV.

There are MUCH bigger high school football stadiums in Texas than the MAC schools.

At least they get some eyes on the game by not competing with the other conferences in the mid-week.
>>
>>77352969
oh it affects attendance.

What are you talking about? It KILLS attendance. People don't go to weeknight games.

>Many have to take off work early to make it
>Don't even get back until after midnight.

People might do it once...but for 3-4 games?
>>
>a month away until the season starts

who here is /ready/?
>>
>>77353015
I combed through the teams
It didn't appear that any of them had any sorta dip in attendance once #MACtion started
>>
>>77352993
Why even bring Texas high schools into this? We're talking about G5s in Ohio and Michigan.

Do ESPN TV dollars really make up for lost ticket revenue throughout the course of a season? It affects home AND away games for every team.

Plus way less tailgating. It kills a university's football culture.
>>
>>77353075
If you're looking at 20k a game but no tv audience, is it that much better than 15k a game and a small tv audience?
>>
>>77353075

>Texas high schools

Just giving it some perspective. The football culture in the upper midwest isn't as strong, and attendance expectations should be realistic.

>Do ESPN TV dollars really make up for lost ticket revenue throughout the course of a season?

For now? Probably. But ESPN is circling the drain, and that money is going to dry up. So it won't be forever.

>tailgating

Fair point, but I suppose it makes the few Saturday games there are MUCH busier than the would be otherwise.
>>
>>77346784

Seconding this. The Rose Bowl was just amazing.
>>
>>77353093
I'm not sure, moneywise. It's an interesting question.

How much is each team compensated by ESPN? I don't know if it makes up for thousands less people buying tix
>>
>>77353149

Ticket money ain't shit compared to TV money, especially for G5 schools where you can get $10 tickets on the day of the game
>>
has ESPN/U released its list of the Top 25 games of the last season? i thought they always did that over the course of the summer
>>
>>77353155
In the MAC's case, ticket revenue is a bit more.

In 2016, WMU got a little over $800,000 from the MAC's ESPN contract, but WMU also made almost $3 million in ticket sales.

>Both conferences are name for the amount of teams that founded them.

Not true.

Big Ten was founded by 8 members and was the Western Conference until Northwestern and Indiana joined. Then they were the Big Ten for about 20 years until Michigan left and became the Big Nine for about 5 years until Ohio State joined. They changed their name back to the Big Ten about 10 years after when Michigan rejoined. Once Chicago left about 15 years after that they went back to the Big Nine for almost 20 years before Michigan State join when they went back to the Big Ten.

Then despite Penn State joining about 40 years later and then Nebraska, Rutgers and Maryland all joining they didn't bother changing it.

Big 12 was also the Big 8 at one point early on.
>>
>>77404503

I suppose "founding" was only appropriate for the Big XII, in the B1G's case it's more of a traditional name that stuck once they had an extended period of stability (and decided to stop renaming the conference afterward).

>Big 12 was also the Big 8 at one point early on

Not really, the Big XII was a whole new conference formed from the Big 8 and the remains of the SWC; I'm not sure they consider the Big XII to be a continuation of the Big 8's lineage, due to so many schools coming in from the SWC all at once.
>>
>>77404503
>>77404548

>Big 8

FWIW, Wikipedia states "The conference was dissolved in 1996... In February 1994, the Big Eight and the Southwest Conference announced that the two leagues had reached an agreement to form a new conference.[3] The eight members of the Big Eight joined with SWC schools Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, and Texas Tech to form the Big 12 Conference the following year. A vote was conducted on whether to keep the new conference's headquarters in Kansas City, and by a vote of 7–5 the conference members voted to move to the Dallas, Texas suburb of Irving. The two Oklahoma schools, all four Texas schools, and Colorado voted for the move while both Kansas schools, Nebraska, Missouri, and Iowa State voted for Kansas City."
>>
>>77404562

cont.

"Following the formation of the Big 12 Conference in 1994, the Big Eight continued operations till August 30, 1996, when the conference was formally dissolved and its members officially began competition in the Big 12 Conference. Although the Big 12 was essentially the Big Eight plus the four Texas schools, the Big 12 regards itself as a separate conference and does not claim the Big Eight's history as its own."

What are the actual holdups with BYU not joining a power conference?

I know they're religious, but how does that affect day-to-day operations of the conference? Baylor and TCU are also religious (though obviously not to the extreme that BYU is) and it works fine with them.
>>
>>77405505
Nah. Big East had a BCS tie-in for a reason.

They had Miami, Pitt, West Virginia, Virginia Tech and some pretty good BC and Syracuse teams.

Even after they got poached, while they no longer deserved the BCS bid, they still had a better conference than the AAC does now with WVU, Pitt, Syracuse, Louisville, and what were actually pretty damn good Rutgers, USF and Cincinnati teams.
>>
>>77405849
Hot take:

The final form of Big East Football (UConn, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, West Virginia, Temple, Cincinnati, Louisville, and USF) would make up a better conference overall today than the B12.
>>
>>77405785
Colorado State offers next to nothing. Boise State would be a better option. You arguably get a bigger TV marker with Colorado State but Boise is actually the bigger national brand and has built in rivalries with BYU and TCU (and are best known for upsetting OU) already.

No.

The AAC is currently its own worst enemy-- UH won its hardest game last year and then shit the bed. The time will come very soon when any AAC team does not shit the bed, showing their superiority over the quickly-fading Big 12.

Here's what last year's playoffs would have looked like with NCAA Tournament rules.
>>
>>77412915

I think 8 is the right number.

There's too much human error/bias in the top 4 teams. Granted you'll never get rid of that, but 8 is enough that you should AT LEAST get the best 4 teams in the playoff.

If I were making the calls, I'd have all 5 P5 conference champions, the highest ranked G5 team, and 2x at large bids.

And to be honest, it's going to expand. There's simply too much money at stake for it NOT to. They're just leaving money on the table with a 4 team playoff.
>>
>>77414661
>>77412915
8 is the best number.

Sure, many years there are only 4 top-tier teams, but other years it is less clear, and there are 5, 6, even 7 teams that deserve a title shot.

I'll be there for sure on Sep 2nd, 16th, and 30th for JMU, VA Tech, and USF, respectively, for certain. Most likely October 21 for BYU as well.

the 8th team in the country doesn't deserve to play a game against the #1 team in the country. >>77415615

Not an argument, the BCS gave us a two loss champion. If the 2 loss 8 seed can beat #1, #2 and #3 back to back to back they deserve the title.

>>77415687

There have been years where over 4 teams had legit arguments to be in the playoff (if one existed at the time). 2008 in particular stands out. Oklahoma, Florida, Texas, Alabama, USC, Utah, Texas Tech, Penn State and Boise State all could have been in. That's 9 teams; the 7 BCS teams all had 1 loss apiece while the 2 midmajors were undefeated. 2010 is another year where multiple deserving teams would have been excluded from a 4 team playoff. Auburn, Oregon and TCU were all undefeated while Stanford, Wisconsin, Ohio State and Michigan State all had one loss.

8 teams (each P5 champion, one G5 bid, two at large bids) with the first two rounds being at the homefield of the higher seed would be ideal. If you don't make the playoff under that system you have nobody but yourself to blame.

Rutgers and Syracuse are only terrible because they were put into a real P5 conference. Rutgers was a top 25 team near the end of their run in the BE, as was USF. USF was like #2 in the country and played a #15 Rutgers one week.

I don't actually think there is
And there's a much bigger money distribution problem
>>
>>77418656

That may even be worse.

>>77418664

There have been years where there were more than 4 legitimate playoff caliber teams that deserved. Just last year, Penn State absolutely deserved a spot.

Sure, number 8 doesn't always deserve to play number 1, but surely the score and result will reflect that. And if number 1 loses, then it shows that the polls were wrong.

And regardless: we all get great football between very proficient teams, and those teams make more money. It's a win/win scenario all around.
>>
>>77418676

>And there's a much bigger money distribution problem

Undeniable

>I don't actually think there is

How do you figure? Ticket sales alone would increase, there would be more commercial tie-ins (ie the "Chick Fil A" Peach Bowl), more games on TV=more air time advertising revenue, et al.

More product=more advertising=more revenue

Just look at the expansion of the NCAA basketball tournament to see how much more money is at stake to be made.
>>
>>77418715

>Just look at the expansion of the NCAA basketball tournament

And the vast majority isn't complaining about having more games. If anything, it's even MORE intentionally compelling with under dog teams making "Cinderella runs" deep into the tournament.

Maybe it's just a reflection of how college football is taken less-seriously by the fans and public west of Texas. Not the quality of play, that is. Just the amount of people who are dedicated to it.
>>
>>77418688
>Just last year, Penn State absolutely deserved a spot.
Not really
There really should have been only 3 teams. Ohio State didn't deserve to be there, but neither did anyone else

>And regardless: we all get great football between very proficient teams, and those teams make more money. It's a win/win scenario all around.
We've gotten 5 blowouts in 6 semifinals
6 blowouts in 9 playoff games
Not the greatest sign that we're gonna get anything that entertaining
>>
>>77418624
A lot of people feel that way, actually. The critics are just really loudmouthed.

P5 champs + 2 at-large + G5 champ would always have interest because people love an underdog and the G5 slot would provide just that.
>>
>>77418738

>We've gotten 5 blowouts in 6 semifinals
>6 blowouts in 9 playoff games

That's a very small sample size. Look at all the other top tier bowl games between teams that missed the playoff, and there were some GREAT games. USC and Penn State in the Rose Bowl is top of the list, but also Michigan and FSU, et al. If those were playoff games, the numbers would be a lot kinder.

>>77418738

>There really should have been only 3 teams.

Well shit, I would have argued that Washington's easy ass schedule, and loss to the a VERY hot and cold USC, should have DQ'd them from the playoff.

In any case, there are many, many other people who would disagree with you, and gladly lined up to watch those games on TV.

And to add to that: consider that the NFL has a very elaborate playoff system, and the great success they've gotten from it.
>>
>>77418738
>There really should have been only 3 teams. Ohio State didn't deserve to be there, but neither did anyone else
see but that's literally just your opinion.

The ONLY objective way to tell who belongs and who doesn't is to PLAY THE GAME.

People said a playoff would never happen.

An 8 team playoff is coming whether you like it or not.
>>
>>77418735
I'm willing to give Cal, UCLA, and U$C a break because at least those have more proper names than just the school. One of the biggest lies in American sports
People don't actually want to see Cinderella runs
Sure they'll feel good about it but viewership goes down whenever there isn't a Duke vs Kentucky matchup

Ticket sales would not increase
Case in point: FCS playoffs have worse attendances than regular season games
There's too many games at this point
Now you're asking to add one more?

Then you have to factor in that we'll probably have to drop a regular season game
I doubt the 122 non-playoff teams would love that
>>
>>77418768

>One of the biggest lies in American sports
>People don't actually want to see Cinderella runs

Got any hard data on that? Because just about everyone I watch games with switches to the "Cinderella" team if/when "their team" gets eliminated.

Hell, it's the reason Boise State has a national brand.

>Case in point: FCS playoffs have worse attendances than regular season games

False comparison, FCS teams by definition do not have the fan base or tradition of FBS teams, with a few rare exceptions (NDSU). They rarely sell out their own tiny stadiums in their home markets.

>Then you have to factor in that we'll probably have to drop a regular season game
I doubt the 122 non-playoff teams would love that

There's about a dozen ways to make sure this doesn't happen. All you have to do is cannibalize a few bowls into playoff games.

It's not like there's a shortage of Bowls anyway. If anything, it would make room for a few MORE "Monday evening on a work night" bowl games if any sponsors so desired.

What if that guy from that Jessica Jones show controlled the playoff committee to put in 2-10 Kansas in the playoff and they somehow won both games
Would you accept them as the best team in college football?
We're trying to get the best team in college football not just the winner of a playoff
How many teams could have argued they was worthy of the #2 place
2014 it would have been 6 teams worthy of being in a playoff
2015 we had the perfect amount at 4
Last year we really only needed 3
We really shouldn't go by "if they win in the playoff they deserve to be there" because of how often random shit can happen
>>
>>77418840

>What if that guy from that Jessica Jones show controlled the playoff committee to put in 2-10 Kansas in the playoff and they somehow won both games

Thankfully that could literally NEVER happen.

If a 10-2 Penn State went to the playoffs and beat Alabama and Clemson? Fuck yeah I'd say they were the national champs.
>>
>>77418804
Tv ratings go down whenever Cinderella wins
Boise State got notoriety
Doesn't mean people actually watched

If you look the average FCS playoff game has a 20% smaller attendance than regular season games
Most of it has to do with lack of time to plan

We can't have teams play 16 games
Especially with the cte concerns and lack of pay

>>
>>77418856

Most stadiums aren't named like that..

Big Ten:
Illinois: Memorial Stadium
Indiana: Memorial Stadium
Nebraska: Memorial Stadium
Minnesota: >TCF Bank Stadium
Maryland: Maryland Stadium
Michigan: Michigan Stadium
Michigan St: Spartan Stadium
Ohio St: Ohio Stadium
Rutgers: >High Point Solutions Stadium

So only Penn State, Iowa, Purdue Northwestern and Wisconsin have the stadium named after someone, but Wisconsin's wasn't even named after someone associated with the school.

Boston College: Alumni Stadium
Clemson: Memorial Stadium
Louisville: >Papa John's Cardinal Stadium
Syracuse: Carrier Dome

tl;dr version: AAC only has 4 teams without a named field/stadium, and 2 of those are NFL stadiums (USF and Temple) the other 2 are UCF and Memphis.

I think a "named" stadium just sounds more historic, and implies a closer link to the community. Having some multinational corporation's name plastered all over the name feels less... civilized.

I would like to see some hard numbers on this. The newest thing I can find online is at least 7 years old. Sports TV revenue and watching habits have changed a LOT in that time.

It would be 15. One more than the current. That's not going to make waves, especially when the schools are being WELL compensated.

>If you look the average FCS playoff game has a 20% smaller attendance than regular season games

See >>77418973 in addition to my earlier comment on how these school BARELY have fan bases to begin with--much less national brands that would have even non-fans attend the games if they were local.

What's the point of outdoor practice facilities when most stadiums use fake turf anyway? You're not really going to mess up the real fields playing surface by practicing on it.

Not using FSU as an example. because if I had to guess they use real turf, this picture just made me think about it. Every team has an outdoor practice facility even though their actual stadium has fake grass. Indoor ones I guess make sense so you can practice during bad weather.
