It's a tough cookie since you need HG players in the CL/EL, or at least U21s that have spent two seasons at the club. It's definitively possible to get promoted every year until the EPL by loaning entire teams from the upper echelon(s) every season. Physical attributes are more important than the rest. The grind gets easier once in the EPL since you'll be gifted massive amounts of TV money that will allow you to buy the players and especially the youngsters you need to get good. Once stabilized in the PL it's decently easy to grind your way to and through Europe due to the massive money advantage England has... unless you get a hard Brexit that is.

15 is doable if you never, ever miss on promotion and have a good scouting network (read the OP), but don't be disappointed if you can't do it in 15 years. At worse, you'll keep company to Mitch for failed promotions.

Yes, they will often pay them off if you have enough money. But bank loans are mostly inexpensive these days, and can be used to write of taxes, etc. So nothing to worry too much about.

God, wingers (the position, not the role) are so fucking dogshit in FM17. They literally ruin your team because you have to give up a strong midfield or a second striker to be able to use them. What even is their point, except for defending against wingplay heavy teams who attack with wingers and fullbacks?

Screwed if you do, screwed if you don't. Formations with no wingers whatsoever are prone to getting fucking exposed whenever the opponent is able to keep possession a bit and exploit the wide open wings, but having them fucks your team big time in offense.

Both AMR/AML and MR/ML. The latter feels even more useless than the former, but both are incredibly bad. All you need to do to score in FM17 is overload the center and just play one-twos until youre in the opponent's box, and players on the wings cant do anything useful at all.

I'm currently considering a 5-3-2 with attacking wingbacks or IWBs, two central mids, one attacking mid and two strikers.

Is this something new? A ton of other players at other clubs also retired on that day. Seems like an odd time to retire (?)

Never experienced this myself on FM 17, other than Joe Cole retiring as U18 coach/player in December 2018, as he had only played four matches for me that season. Weird to have so many retire at the same date during a season.
