Keeping in mind that, prior to the suspensions, Essendon had often been competitive against Hawthorn, even beating them in a premiership year, it's not all that surprising that they'd beat them again in round 1 with Mitchell, Lewis and Hodge gone.

The Essendon list does have some real talent, and Woosha is a good coach. They have a solid midfield group and good KPPs. Their concern is probably how well they can gel and run out games after a year off, but they could play finals this year.
