I need some tactical input. Pic related are the tactics that I use with my 4-2-3-1.

1) I either have a supportive midfield (one guy stays behind, one gets himself open, one stays a bit higher but doesn't get into the box) or an aggressive midfield that tries to get into the box. Depends on whether I can dominate the opponent and try to overload the defense or if I'm trying to play organized football.
2) I use IWB most of the time, but against some teams that cannot defend the flanks well, regular attacking fullbacks or wingbacks are more useful so I sometimes use those.
3) Sometimes I use wingers instead of RMD if I want my wingers to cut outside and cross, especially against teams that overload the middle so that I can't get any passes through to the RMD.

Now, what I want to know is what role to use instead of RPM. I'm 100% certain that I dislike the role in FM16 and 17, its just shit. Literally all the role is good for is running around like a headless chicken. an RPM positions himself high up the pitch so that it cant defend against counters but he never enters the box, so he's very vertically stationary, he only drifts horizontally. He's not even good at playmaking, the only thing that makes them a playmaker is that they value being open to receive passes more than being actually useful.

What role would complement my midfield and overall team the best in your opinion? I'm thinking about scratching playmakers in general, I don't like how any of them behave, except for APa (but that wouldn't fit into this team imo). What would you lads do?

But to answer your question, get an affiliate in the championship, you will most likely get some decent loanees.

Then you scout for free agents, I always scout every released player in all leagues above mine on july 1. 95% of the players are either too good or too bad for you to sign them, but you will end up with some gold. Scout the ones that would be an improvement and would be willing to join for another week and then start signing/offer trials.

in my corby town save I found a 19 year old free agent from manure when i was in league 2 who was sold for £3m a year later saving the club's finances while I was rebuilding the squad in league 1.

Basically, finding free agents is key, sign the older ones to 1-2 year contracts unless they're good enough for the next league so you can quickly kick them to the curb once you promote. Sign the young ones with talent to 2-3 year contracts since theres a chance you can sell them later.

FM is completely random with CCCs. Sometimes a sitter won't register, but the ME will count shots from very closed angles as CCCs anyhow. I noticed that with a tactic where I was having bazillions shots right in front of the goal, complete sitters that my players would hoof into space and yet have 2 CCCs top (and win by three goals and feel I could've won by twice as much if they didn't piss themselves).

For me, a player to use to compensate for another one who does absolutely nothing defensively (Enganches, Treqs, Regista). My choice would be between CM(S) and BBM. BBM will roam from its position, so it depends if you want a player that can exploit space sometimes (still pretty average Mentality) or a player who doesn't dick around at the corner flag. If CM(D) weren't consistently closing down more, I'd try CM(D)/DLP(S). RPMs worked better for me with a AMC who moves around to free/exploit space due to the RPm's tendency to dribble aggressively forward to make play and then sit in front of the box: basically, a Treq (beware about defensive tho' with these twos).

It's pretty much the reason why I'm using systems with 3 midfielders almost exclusively: I can have whatever midfield pairing I want and still have a water carrying CM/DM behind to close the shop and pick up the through balls CMs can't figure out how to deal with. It's something Cruyff talked about when inverting the triangle: the attacking shape is the 4-3-3 and not the 4-2-3-1 because there are two players in front of a CM/DM and not two players behind your AMC.

To me, just the roaming shit. BBMs used to have a bit more creative freedom but I certainly haven't noticed that. It looks like a small difference, but it's pretty huge in terms of how they try to exploit space, how they get inside the box or not or how they get caught out of position for example. CM(S) tend to be more positionally disciplined, which sometimes makes me pull my hair when they decide to take a long shot instead of dribbling into a space or getting closer. OTOH, I've seen my BBMs roam from their position on the ball to the corner flags if the IF did cut inside. That's not something I've seen a CM(S) (with no PPMs of course) do.

I really like Dave Azpilicueta. I've been a fan since FM 08 or 09 where I played with Osasuna I think and he was just incredible for my team, and never complained about not getting sold or nothing.
