Bottas was considered too good of a driver for Williams. He's the next best crop of driers that weren't on a top team already. This is his first time in a competitive car that can actually win races so now's his chance to show how good he really is.
If Hulkenberg wasn't signed with Renault already it would've been between Hulkenberg and Bottas for the Merc seat.

Pirelli need all of the testing track time that they can get. It's not good to lose a day of track time because Vettel crashed the mule car. Gio was supposed to drive today after Seb but probably won't now.

I don't really understand why the FIA is so restrictive on tyre testing. Pirelli should be able to contract someone with little/no affiliations to the teams and they can test compounds. But they don't, and so everyone's going in, more or less blind and then we get 2013.
>>
>>74166552
>>74166595
Pirelli should get a company like Dallara or Toyota to make mule cars and test them on those.
Proper testing is absolutely the most important part of a new tyre cycle.

I think there's a rule that whichever team is in charge of the mule tyre testing that day has to share the data openly with the rest of the teams. so it's as if all the teams are present at the test without having to actually be there. it's supposed to be a way to save costs so teams like Sauber don't have to go to the tyre test but still have access to the data.
But of course there's going to be some bias and the big three are the teams supplying the mule cars for the test.

Why does Pirelli need to test the new tyres? I thought you guys said Pirelli are experts with vast experience at making tyre compounds for all purposes so surely they can easily meet the demands of the FIA to make different compound tyres with predictable lifespans, predictable wear patterns, heat tolerances, reasonable air pressures and no chance of suddenly exploding for no reason.

Have Toyota supply power-units and parts, so this way privateer teams can enter using Toyota engines and equipment without needing Toyota to enter their own team. Similar to how Haas does it. There's a list of standardized parts from the FIA that Haas can buy/get from Ferrari; and they only make the minimum amount of the chassis that's required by the rulebook to count as an independent constructors. So it's supposed to save on costs and if Haas can prove that this method works more teams will probably try to copy him in the future.

There were brief talks during the season about a potential independent engine alternative to the power units. Like one of those AER Toyota engines that the Rebellion LMP was using.

>Are they really going to change turn 1 at Monza and get rid of the chicane?

Supposedly, but I think that there's a delay with permits or something so it might not happen this year, just eliminating the chicane all together would be pretty neat and easier to do. if they also altered curva grande a bit to make it more like 130r used to be where it was maybe full throttle if you had big balls technically hat would be great, and again probably easier.

No clue how auto corrected to technically hat.

I'm really excited about the driver lineup in 2017, even more so than the new cars. >>

If you look at the lap by lap onboard, Grosjean actually does brake earlier than the other laps, so Max wasn't wrong about that. It's not THAT massive of a change though and a driver is allowed to do that as long as its not a blatant attempt to try and fuck with the driver behind (eg Alonso brake testing Coulthard). Max on the other hand was just in his full always go forward disregard strategy or tire management mode that he always did at Toro Rosso and simply didn't even think about anything else except getting past the car in front. I honestly don't know if he will ever learn to control this and it might be a bit of a problem in the future if he is to be fighting for a championship someday etc

I think Grosjean was being cautious of a lockup and intentionally covering so that Verstappen couldn't pass, whilst Verstappen was in full hard dick JOS aggression mode. Both are at fault to some extent, probably moreso Verstappen's fault for being so impatient etc. Funny how neither driver accepted any sort of blame whatsoever.

>>74171751

Well not really. I do think what he was trying to do is one of his "overtake under braking" moves where he does the overtake in the braking zone and then places his car so that the other guy just has to lift or they crash. He did this move on Maldonado in the same race in the same corner (although Maldonado had some engine problem). I do think he could have made the corner although it would have required quite friendly cooperation from Grosjean as well.
>>
>>74172772

We need to go wider.

I really hate these wide as fuck entry/exits like this track, COTA T1 etc. What the fuck is the point of making it like 3x as wide as necessary? Maybe it saves some lap 1 incidents from happening but other than that it is just retarded and retarded looking especially. I'm a bit surprised there haven't been more of these "alternative lines collide because the corner is a carpark" incidents in all honesty, although I do stand by the fact that Schumacher's driving in the clips was quite desperate and below the level where he seems to be rated at currently (considering he is basically a year or three away from getting an inevitable F1 drive)

basically they tried to make it as neutral as possible with the mule car for Pirelli's testing. so this way none of the teams will get an unfair advantage by getting to use the new 2017 tyres early before the other teams and official winter testing.
so the teams say there's no advantage and it's all neutral so that's why they have to share the data from the tyre test with everyone else. but obviously the big three would rather still be there at the test than not being there and are the only teams that have the resources to make the mule car in time for the test. if there really was no advantage to being there then they would send Haas to do the tyre testing. but Pirelli would rather have a real 2017 car for the test that would be more accurate than a mule car, but then the team helping with the test would get an unfair advantage.

No wonder all of the drivers are retiring. No one wants to drive these turbo hybrid shitboxes. Teams might as well get inexperienced drivers that don't know any better. They've never driven the previous generation of cars so they have nothing to compare it too.
These new aero rules could end up backfiring. More aerodynamics means more drag so the new rules are going to put more importance on a strong engine to help cut through the wind and overcome the extra drag. So there's a chance these new rules will still lead to MWL.

Open engine development and getting rid of the token system means Renault and Ferrari have more freedom to improve their power units quickly, but Mercedes can make improvements also.

He was easily the best rookie in F3 last year.

If he does well of course people are going to just say "well he had 1 more year of experience so its understandable" blah blah.

Is he staying with Motopark btw? I haven't been paying attention. It would be nice to get a non-Prema winner for a change.

I know the Germans here get asspained whenever someone says something objective or critical about any Schumacher, but IMO from what I have seen, Mick isn't exactly the most promising driver. He was driving a Prema in F4 Germany and Italy and still managed to not win both. I don't think he is total shit or anything but its astounding how much the race coverage focuses on him no matter what he does, he is being treated like the second coming of god. I do hope he does well, but so far he has just been inconsistent. He has good drives where he dominates the race, but its not consistent. Sometimes good, sometimes way down the field and then making stupid moves or spinning out or simply unable to pass. There are many drivers who never even ended up making it to F1 who drove with more flash and conviction than Mick, which is why its a bit strange to see him being hyped and praised so much. I mean I know why it is but its just a bit odd

Even Lance Stroll won just about everything he ever participated in with Prema, so I would expect Mick to do the same at the very least.
>>

So what was your point then? "It's a double standard because Ricciardo does the same except that Ricciardo does it without incident and is an adult so you can't judge them based on the same criteria why are you mad about it?"

When given the 3rd best car or above he might or be very close, 2nd best he will win before the last race, 1st best and it will be total domination.
Give him a schumi, vettel, hamilton quality car and he'll be winning titles into his 80's

It's still the same engines. The engines are the limiting factor. In qualifying they'll be quick over one lap with the engine turned up to maximum. But during the race there will still be fuel saving and using software trickery to turn the engine modes down during the race. so it still might end up like "endurance racing".
I don't hate the idea of hybrid electric motors and fuel efficiency but the hybrid technology isn't fast enough yet. Gasoline is still faster. Instead of these overtly complex power units and brake by wire systems, you can make a cheaper, less complicated, and faster F1 engine. If you really wanted to make a hybrid Energy Recovery System then there are different possible configurations that you can use. It doesn't strictly have to be a 1.5L V6 turbo. Like the three LMP1s all had different layouts for their hybrid ERS systems.

That's literally not the case and I don't know why you bother writing such a long post when you have no idea what you're talking about.

If you paid any attention in the last 3 years you would know the primary limiting factor were the tires. Naturally degrades very quickly, and degrades insanely quickly if the tire overheats, and the tire overheats when you push 100% for 1 lap or less. Drivers were strategizing aspects of their quali lap regarding when the tires would start to overheat. Which also meant that in races you have to be very conservative because otherwise it destroys your entire race strategy (see any Verstappen drive in 2015). Assuming Pirelli doesn't fuck up, which they might, this should now be fixed and the degradation will still be there but the tires will not be so prone to overheating.

The engines are fine, and actually amazing aside from the sound. The problem is that FIA has not only insisted on this extremely expensive and actually cutting edge engine formula, whilst simultaneously setting reliability standards that are pretty much off the charts when it comes to F1. I don't remember the exact details, but even in 2013 a driver had like 9 or 10 engines at their disposal, and back in the old days, engines were changed for every race pretty much if the team could afford it. One unexpected engine blow up can fuck your entire season, especially now that the 250 grid penalties at once loophole is closed, which is why teams are essentially forced to run in safe modes for the entire race. This again is not the fault of the power unit itself (which are some of the most reliable of all time btw), but a fault of retarded regulations that made the PU's a) insanely expensive and b) forced them to last like 5-6 races, including all the FPs and qualis, whilst simultaneously complaining about drivers not being more active in non-race sessions.
>>
>>74176870

CONT'd

Fuel flow restrictions are not actually restrictive to performance at current levels aside from maybe Honda. Mercedes hasn't even been secretive about the fact that they underfuel severely for each race. This might be different next year if the cars push harder, but honestly we will just have to wait and see what the actual race paces are going to be like.

I'm sure I could go on and on but the point is you don't know what you're talking about

And as much as I would be fully ok with going back to V10's or even V8s, its not going to happen. Watch the interview with Ross Brawn about the future of F1 and what his role is going to be. He advocates for technology and being cutting edge etc obviously, but he also advocates the separation of road car relevance and racing tech, because in his words following the trend of road cars will end up in electric cars that drive themselves.

My wild guess would be some sort of standardized hybrid unit (as this is the most expensive part) and a relatively straight forward V6 turbo that sounds like F1.
>>
>>74176937
>>74176870
>>74176706
Finland is right but I agree I would prefer an LMP1 style solution of hybrid variants balanced against each other. That way a dirt cheap engine can be produced with limited hybrid features.
>>
>>74176991

It would end up being expensive as fuck anyway because its F1 we are talking about.

I don't think the current PU is the optimal way to go about things but I dunno, big manufacturers are already spending this much money, with new regs they're not going to start spending LESS money. It's expensive and will continue to be expensive forever because some tiny autism part of an engine that costs 999999 man hours will make your engine 0,1 seconds faster per lap therefore its worth it if you have the money, and add to that equation the whole uncharted territory aspect of hybrid power and whatnot and yea, its going to be expensive regardless.
>>
>>74177200
From the beginning the engines should have had a price cap on them anyway so the engine manufacturers don't pass the price on to smaller teams.

If Sauber could use a tuned up Cosworth V8 with a KERS system that would naturally be a lot cheaper then they would.
It would be a lot easier for an F2 team (when it becomes F2) to move on to an F1 team if price of entry wasn't so stupidly high for the bottom end of the grid.

Right, because in LMP1 the non-hybrids are really sticking it to the hybrids...

LMP1-Hybrids are manufacturer teams, other manufacturers aren't able to play in LMP1 non-hybrid because the ACO did not want an hybrid to lose to a non-hybrid. And the difference in resources between a manufacturer and a privateer is night and day, hybrid or not. Privateers would have to run 50% more fuel (or more) than the hybrids to get the same performance.

LMP1-H has become too expensive at the same time it has lost all variety - everyone's petrol, all use battery storage, only difference is Porsche have one front-axle MGU-K and a Heat ERS (no e-Turbo, AFAIK), while Toyota has one MGU-K on each axle.

You are implying I give a shit in the performance levels between non-hybrids and hybrids.
Doesn't matter if they are at the back as long as we can have a full grid (26 cars) as a minimum then it is okay.
All the cheaper teams have said themselves if they could take a less competitive engine for a fraction of the price they would.

Frankly I'd do a hard split and have two championships for manufacturer and non-manufacturer with different rule sets but apparently people find that immoral.

>but he also advocates the separation of road car relevance and racing tech,
exactly I'm hoping Brawn and Chase now without Bernie around do the right thing and force a radical change away from these power units. But F1 doesn't want their public image to appear to be against environmentalism.
"Road Relevancy" is one of the FIA's smokescreen propaganda excuses like "cutting costs". Every regulation change they make backfires and ends up making the sport more expensive. The limits on power unit components with farcical grid penalties was originally supposed to "cut costs" but teams can't make their components last the whole season and then they can't race hard without fear of grid penalties. and it leads to bullshit races with lifting & coasting in the early laps, Lewis being able to back off and slow down as much as he pleases without a threat of losing a position. Ever since F1 has switched to these power units it has lowered the quality of the racing.

I get that it's the natural evolution of the KERS system with a brake by wire MGU-K for regen under braking and adding using the ICE & MGU-H to help charge the bigger battery and bigger HP deployment from the battery system. but road relevancy was never F1's main priority. Road relevancy for manufacturers was through sportscar racing, touring cars and Le Mans. F1 is more of a trickle down effect like paddle shifters. Every rule change backfires so they might as well "go backwards" and put a modern V10 into it. The 2.4L V8s weren't exactly gas guzzlers either.

I think the contract for these current power units ends in 2018 or 2020 and then F1 has to decide what the next engine formula will look like. I can't wait. They said these road relevant turbo hybrids would lure in more manufacturers but Honda can't even supply a second team yet. but obviously I hope I'm proven wrong, and Pirelli start making good tires, Renault and Ferrari, Honda get their act together and we get good racing.

Look at Mclaren in 2014, best engine on the grid and they finished 5th in the fucking constructors points. The chassis and aero probably arent that bad anymore but I would reckon with 90% certainty that they are worse than Mercedes, Red Bull, and possibly Ferrari, meaning that even if the Honda engine is perfect they're finishing about 5th which is miles behind a win these days.

It's more about bass, but it's about the electronics. My bass's volume pot seems to be 25kOhms by multimeter measurement. That would make sense if it was active, but it's entirely passive. Is there any reason why that would be the case? It's a Fender Pawn Shop Mustang Bass.

From a purely electronics standpoint I thought pots were for bleed-off, aka more resistance = less output? So yah that's a little weird for a passive setup. I would say check out actual bulletin board forums but most musicians aren't electrical engineers so a lot of that info is bro wisdom.

Tho I can say from my experience going parallel on a hot pickup is great, keep in mind impedance is the important number instead of resistance. So going 1/2 the resistance in parallel is more like 70% of the output iirc. I thought a mini humbucker in my tele would sound more like a single coil in parallel but it makes a much better open sound vs. series wiring. Would deffo recommend.

>>
>>74197258
I think he was planning to make a cheeky privateer entry with the 2017 spec Polo. Unfortunately VW didn't homologate it before the deadline because they were pulling out, and the FIA recently ruled that they would not allow the car to compete as a result.

Maybe he will make a privateer entry in one of the other 2017 spec cars, but I think he is stuck with the Skoda WRC2 car otherwise.

He will probably get a drive for 2018 though. I don't see Juho Hänninen sticking around for long. Both in Monte and Sweden he was slow and managed to kill the car on a tree, and he doesn't have any notable results earlier in his career either as far as I know.

Well a 25K pot will still work with passive electronics, it just rolls off the treble very considerably toe the point that it is pretty unusable at least on guitar. As you said, 25K pots are generally used with active circuits or pickups. Are you the bass's first owner, ie did it come with that pot from the factory? Because if you're buying used it can just be that someone who didn't know replaced a broken pot with a 25k one.

I have to say I don't really know about bass in particular but have done my fair share of tinkering with guitar electronics, pickups, wiring and whatnot.

Potentiometers are cheap anyway unless you want to get into some real vintage correct spec autism so you might as well just buy different pots with different values and just see what sort of difference it makes to the sound.

While we're at it guitar bros, help me decide what to buy:

Got about 4k to blow on a guitar and I'm deciding between the Music Man Luke 3 BFR and the Fender David Gilmour NOS. Thoughts?
And I know nothing about bass sry m80.
>>
>>74198087

Two entirely different guitars, both with a considerable "famous name" tax. It really depends on what kind of music you want to be playing.

I personally think Music Man guitars are a bit of a meme and there has been some talk of their quality control being a bit shit, with guitars with bad fretwork and finish issues leaving the factory. The fact that many of their endorsees have been leaving in the past year or two seems to also suggest there is something perhaps not right with the company. I also wouldn't pay 4K for a new Fender under any circumstances, and the difference between a good made in USA production line Fender and the Fender Custom Shop really isn't that drastic to justify such a price increase, and nowadays is more about just getting stuff like specific color schemes and maybe selecting specific woods etc.

For that sort of budget you honestly could also be looking at PRS or even get yourself a Guthrie Govan Charvel. Or alternatively look at the more boutiquey manufacturers like Suhr, Anderson, or some European based ones like based Ruokangas from Finland.

Obviously play before you buy unless you feel like potentially throwing away 4K on an average or even lemon guitar when you could have gotten an amazing one.

>play before you buy
don't worry I'm not that stupid.

>Guthrie Govan Charvel
Thought about it but the reason I'm looking at the two I mentioned is that I wanted a guitar with a good floating vintage trem. The Govan one is actually close to that but crossed with a Floyd Rose. I'll have to play one and think about it but then again it's basically also a Fender with a new name on it.

>difference between a good made in USA production line Fender and the Fender Custom Shop really isn't that drastic to justify such a price increase
Kinda have to disagree here. Of course above ~1500€ you get drastically diminishing returns in terms of value for your money but a custom shop strat does feel a lot better to me than a production model. I do see you point though in the sense that the teambuilt ones (so most of them) arent that much better and the masterbuilt ones are even more expensive.

>Music Man guitars are a bit of a meme
Please elaborate. I didn't hear anything bad about them and endorsees leaving (aside from Eddie of course, after banging Sterling's wife kek) or shoddy quality. I owned a Silhouette and still own an Axis and I'm perfectly happy with them, so this does surprise me a bit. I'm not active on the forums anymore for various reasons.

>more boutiquey manufacturers like Suhr
Thinking about that, I have a nice dealer around the corner who offers brand like Framus, Suhr and Nik Huber. They are nice too but don't really have me sweating for them. Buddy of mine has a Pensa Suhr (the Mark Knopfler one) and while that's nice it's not exactly what I'm looking for. They do build killer guitars tho. Also I'm not 100% sure that I really want to drop the money on yet another guitar. Thanks for the input so far.
>>
>>74198392
get a 1-1.5k guitar that you like playing/is comfortable/you like the style of, consider second-hand too

spend the rest on upgrading the hardware, it doesn't matter what trem/bridge/pickups come with the guitar as long as the guitar is well built and plays well.

The trem on the Govan model is somewhat Floyd-ish but it obviously doesn't have the locking nut. It is fully floating but appears to stay in tune akin to a locking nut Floyd, which is pretty cool. and Charvel is part of FMIC so it literally is a Fender with a different name on the headstock. I am also personally interested in the whole "roasted maple" thing, as far as I know the Govan model has a roasted neck AND body (basswood), which should make it very stable and resonant. I don't know if this is just a marketing meme but nonetheless it is interesting.

The Music Man stuff comes from a lot of their smaller endorsees leaving. I don't know if the quality control issues were limited to the Petrucci sig models, but there were several cases of those being just kind of poorly made (frets, poor inlay work, nothing massive but nothing I would want on a guitar in that price range). If you can get your hands on a Luke sig to try out and it feels good then go for it. I am personally glad that Luke finally ditched the EMG's and has now been using passives for a while. I heard good things about his Dimarzio signature pickups as well.

I do have to say that my info isn't 100% current at this stage anymore as I got overwhelmingly bored of the whole guitarist forum experience, especially when you realize that many of the people there trying to give you advice can't actually play guitar properly.

Also it is worth checking the used market with a budget like 4k. People that sell and deal with guitars in that price range generally also keep them in good condition. Plus I personally just think guitars that have been "played in" sound/feel a lot better than a brand new one, but that's just preference. You can get good deals in Finland so I'm sure a bigger market like Germany is even better when it comes to availability of used guitars etc.

The track at ROC was setup that way with this crossover point at the start/finish line. so you do a different half of the track each lap. but he screwed up trying to do the crossover. Sauber are hoping he didn't hurt his neck so he can be ready for testing.

>Green Hell: two short words to describe some very long miles. Miles that shoot a mainline of adrenaline into any racing heart. By their enunciation alone, they demand reverence to those that dare tame the feted Nurburgring Nordschleife.

>The place has warranted a film for decades, and now one has been made to tell the histories, the legends, the triumphs and tragedies that pepper the place like the eminent pine trees which encircle it.

hmm sounds good

>This pantheon of greatness is described by multiple narrators, including Sky Sports F1 commentator David Croft and, most memorably, Murray Walker.

There is only 1 thing that can save the shitty processionfest known as F1...

BALANCE
OF
PERFORMANCE

You know it's true.

GT racing, V8 supercars, NASCAR, Indy, hell, pretty much every other series on 4 wheels is better than F1 because they employ some kind of balance of performance standards so they don't have the shitshow that exists in F1.

With new leadership, it's just a matter of time.

Prepare yourself for it now, so you won't sperg as hard later.

I'm a turbo autist who spends his free hours on a Mongolian wicker-basket weaving forum discussing Formula 1, or watching old races from decades ago, with commentary in languages I don't understand.

Girls don't look at me, m8.

>Are there many Indians where you are?
Yes, actually. It's a little absurd, desu. There are lots.
