Well to be perfectly honest I don't think most MMA fighters really know how to box. You continually see guys getting away with circling because nobody knows how to cut the ring off and very few fighters have a quality jab. GSP learned the basics in just a few months and it was enough to make Koscheck look like a complete fool.

I guess that's what I mean about the talent level not being that different...there are generally a tiny handful of dudes that are really fucking good and then a bunch of mid-level fighters. Maybe Jon Jones would front kick Silva to death but I think he'd also run right through almost all the guys Jones fought. I get where you're coming from but there are very few guys that can implement the type of gameplan you're talking about. Hell, a lot of guys don't even watch film.

The grappling is higher level in UFC than the striking because it's easier to transfer from grappling to MMA than striking to MMA, at least in UFC rules. Boxers, kickboxers, and muay thai guys have mostly gotten wrestlefucked when they tried to make the switch

Strikers have pride in the gym and trying to transition to mma is hard because they don't respect the ground game and disdain it and learning something from the white belt fucks with you. Also now your striking that is elite tier in Kickboxing is now lacking in mma because of the threat of takedowns. I think it's a tad overstated, honestly. Lesnar got rushed to the title even after Mir tapped him, Sonnen probably didn't deserve any of his title shots, and not too long ago the heavyweight division consisted of Sylvia and Arlovski rematching each other while all the best guys were in Pride. The rankings are a promotional tool and have always been 100% bullshit.

McGregor was "allowed" to move up to his natural weight class, he looked like an Auschwitz escapee at the weigh-ins ad everybody and their brother knew he wasn't staying. There's been lots of chatter about other guys moving around but it hasn't happened yet.
