I suggest racer.com for news and info about the series and the race for this year. Their reporter Marshall Pruett does a pretty good job of finding stuff to write about in the lead up.

As far as the history goes I don't really know. If you could find any of the races on a torrent site or YouTube obviously that would be neat.

Personalized helmets exist for one reason, to identify drivers. In past anything too complex was hard to identify on live TV. Only thing that has changed is resolution of televisions.

When sports on TV became a thing pretty much all team sports were affected in one way or another. Home and away colors picked on way that those are easily distinguished on black and white TV. NHL is good example and more orthodox than most other leagues.

Only thing that separates NHL from some other leagues/sports is strict white away colors. Football is also good example, balls suddenly became white instead of brown once TV became a thing. Home and away kits became mandatory, now even 3rd kit is becoming defacto mandatory because of international cups as coordinating colors between different leagues would be nightmare with just two kits.

Even Red Bull's Camo thing they used for testing was better than what they use every year. They could have even used that camo style integrated with the trademark colors and it would have been something new, but nah better stick to the good old design. As if they have any brand/team loyalty anyway. Pic related is pretty much only good and original livery Toleman-Benetton-Renault-Lotus has ever had. Black and gold JPS livery is pretty good but it's original Lotus livery. IMHO Renault should go for late 70's-early 80's yellow-black-white.

Legendary liveries of yesterday same as liveries of today, almost always issued by sponsors or derived from the day that certain liveries were mandatory, like Ferrari or Mercedes these days.

Ironically here is alternative to todays Williams due to main sponsor, Martini sponsored teams are either white or red.

Feels more than a bit like captain obvious, but problem isn't teams, but sponsors when it comes to liveries. If team decides livery it will be it's own main sponsor, as it with Ferrari, Mercedes and used to be with Renault in 80's. Occasionally other sponsor will follow the main sponsor, because marketing synergies, as happened with West-McLaren-Mercedes from mid 90's to early 2000's, West applied silver from Merc to their own branding.

In 70's and even in 80's Formula 1 ran on less money than now. Then constructors decided that running team is better than being engine supplier. That made everything too serious business and budgets skyrocketed.
