It's ironic in my case that I feel like the opposite.

When I was working, I felt like I was ridiculously stagnant - and, in many ways, deteriorating.
'Full time' work and narcoleptic hypersomnia essentially lead my life to being 1) working and 2) attempting to sleep.
There was minimal time and zero energy for being social, for learning, for creating, for playing, for experiencing, for intellectual and personal development...
... and this was all for 9.30 USD an hour. Supporting idiocy in the community for the sake of minimal monetary gain. I killed my own standards and principles for that?

I stopped studying languages. I stopped practicing piano. I nearly stopped playing games and watching anime. I stopped learning new things. I stopped writing. My few friends wondered what the hell I was doing.
I mostly stopped listening to music and listened to the same CD over and over in the family car.
My PC was disconnected for weeks because I was too damn 'lazy' to reconnect cables to a SSD and a HDD.
My hygiene/health went south because I couldn't muster the energy to take care of myself. I was physically and psychologically draining myself.

When I was at home, I couldn't wake up for anything; I ended up disregarding my friends (and myself) because I couldn't push myself and needed my 12+ hours of sleep.
And stupidly, why could I [eventually] get myself to somehow wake up the job I hate, but not for things I actually enjoyed and loved?

Oh, money. Yay for poverty.

Thankfully, after an emotional breakdown at work, I left.
While it's not like I suddenly have tons of time, I sleep when tired, wake up when rested, and have time for SOMETHING.
I can actually focus on and take care of myself. It feels selfish, but it also feels far more productive than working for some shitty retail store...

Sadly, I'll have to work again soon; I'll be ruining myself for money again... But I'm still a narcoleptic hypersomniac. I don't know if I can really handle full time work...

I need some advice, and /adv/ doesn't seem like the right place.
I have been with the same guy for 6 years, since he was 16 and I was 19.
He was homeschooled and never properly socialized. He will go to the store with me and go to family outings, but college and working scares the shit out of him. He litterally has panic attacks just at the thought of it.

I don't know if this falls under shut in, neet (which I don't fully understand) or w/e but I don't know what to do. I'm with him till the end, and I love him no matter what, I just want to understand what's going on with him.

Your SO's case is beyond that scope. That shit is deeply ingrained. Get a professional to help. Or if you want to help, you can intoduce him to a friendly, social, and controlled environment and get him used to it.

Either way, it's going to take a lot of time and work to see results. But you'll get there eventually.

Sounds like diagnosable agrophobia or social anxiety (DON'T take my word for it, you need a professional to determine that). My advice is that he does see a therapist or at least a doctor to start the path to good management. It's really hard to do and I would highly recommend not forcing it on him but I would let him know that you're there for him all the way and that these are the options. Hope it works out anon.

From my experience (I'm in Australia) the therapist will not force you to do anything you want to do. I can be tough facing the anxiety and all that if you've been pushing it down but getting it at least a little bit under control and not letting it take over your life feels so much better than trying to run away from it (again this is all from my own experience). I've always been quiet and shy around new faces, unless I was with friends. I had a shitty step dad in my teens that moved my family away from my friends and wasn't fond of me having friends over or letting my mum drive me anywhere so I spent a lot of time shut in my room, mostly just to avoid being around him because he was a dick. He died like a week after my 18th birthday though. After I finished my first run at college all my friends went on to university whilst I decided to do a different course at college. Of course being surrounded by people I didn't know doing a course I quickly found myself hating caused me to drop out after a short while. I struggled to keep contact with friends and struggled harder to get a job so I just spent all my time at home in my room not talking to anyone. I do leave my room a lot more often now but I don't go out unless it's for a family meal or to walk dogs. Any semblance of social skills I once had are gone now and if I do bump into an old friend I struggle to emulate how we used to act together and it quickly devolves into awkward silences and one word answers, as if they were strangers. I'd try making new friends but I always hear/read about how hard it is to make the kind of friends you'd have in school when you're around my age and all this time alone on the internet has made me bitter and judgemental to the point that I'd pretty much dismiss someone if they said they liked or disliked X or Y. My mum is really patient with me but when she dies I'll probably die alone on the streets. I don't have any relationship with the rest of my family and doubt they'll be as patient to let me stay with them if I can't find work. Been NEET for 5-6 years now and no signs of that changing.

Went NEET after high school.

Stopped giving a damn about impressing other people or trying to impress girls.

Shut myself in and broke all contact with all of my highschool friends. Adopted a "Fuck everyone, help yourself" policy where I made myself happy or improved myself instead of going out of my way and breaking my back to prove my friendliness and selflessness to others.

Fast forward 4 years and I made a lot of college friends. No girl still, but I have gotten some jnterest. Im just having fun enjoying my own endeavors.

I still much prefer to be indoors playing vidya by myself, but I can socialize like the rest of the world if I wanted.

If you focus on improving yourself and making yourself happier, you become a much more interesting person to people around you. Not a lot of people out there would hang around a person who shuts themselves in because "Oh it's ok. The world is better without me bothering it anyways...". However, they can respect a person who needs some time for themself as a breather or to soak things in after a long day.

If you be a little more selfish, you can improve yourself and make yourself more interesting to others. By selfish I mean not bending over backwards to the point of self-destruction by helping others or making them feel good (i.e. putting yourself down to make others feel good about themselves).

By the same token, dont be too selfish or you come off as a dick.

Find a balance between selfless and selfish. Improve yourself. If you build yourself, other people will come to you.

I physically can't talk to my doctor and avoid every reason to see them. The last time I went was for a really dumb thing that happened weeks prior that my mum forced me to go in for and after struggling to half explain what was wrong I got too brave and asked for advice on something more recent and she got pissed off because human beings can have more than one thing wrong with them and just printed out an information sheet and a prescription and rushed me out. I know they only have like 10-15 minutes to see to each appointment but that really made me not want to bother going unless I was dying or something.

I mean my recommendation is to obviously change doctors if they're being a fucktard towards you. Secondly I know with mental health stuff you're better off booking a long appointment and saying "Look I'm having trouble with my mental health, I really need help". I don't think any sane doctor is going to turn you down with that and if they do they are not worth giving your money to. This is what I did with therapist and I finally got one that I can really click with. Obviously not everything that works for me will work for you (especially when its nerve wracking to talk to people) but I think it's the most practical advice I can give.

I have a question for the NEET's living off of their parents. How do you feel about your situation? Do you feel guilt? Failure? Do you blame someone for your situation?

I ask out of genuine curiosity, my brother is a NEET and I think he also classifies as a shut in. He has no recognized health/mental health issues. He has been living off of our parents for 10 years (excluding years up to 18 as he was in school). He appears to have no motivation to get a job or even apply for welfare (which will force him to apply for jobs in our country). He doesn't help out our folks around the house and as far as anyone can tell just eats the meals mum makes and fritters away his time online. I'm finding it harder and harder to be civil toward him. Please, give me some perspective.

There are much more extreme cases of neets out there, people who stay on medication, who see things, people who have extreme mood swings and lash out at anything, people who sleep for 14 hours a day and stay in bed all the time, people who are paranoid that everyone is watching them all the time, people with anxieties enough for a lifetime. There are neets of many layers in the world. If your brother doesn't have any mental illnesses or if he generally seems like an ok guy then he might just be suffering from some emotional trauma early from his life. It could be possible he either never lived out his youth the way he wanted, or maybe he did and growing up his priorities have changed and he now regrets it. Maybe he feels that the family is already taken care of by you, and he doesn't have to try. There's just too many things to think about, but suffice to say it sounds like he's just another lazy dude, and laziness is a factor of a much more deeper problem.

I can't speak for everyone but failure is only a small part of what I feel on a daily basis. Escapism generally helps to take it off my mind. In my case, I can't relate to people genuinely. If I'm at a gathering I can mingle, small talk, pretend I'm just another normal boring person, I laugh at the poorly constructed observational humor, listen to their petty woes and generally try to be a good guy, everybody I talk to leaves with a good impression but I don't feel fulfilled, I do this because I am a generally compassionate person. But I also can't stand it. I'd rather be doing something else with my life, I'd rather have friends that would talk classical art history, make jokes at how dumb expressionism is, play relatively old games with. Things of the sort that interest me, that I grew up. You can't do those kinds of things with most people, and that's ok, I don't have any hateful feelings but this makes me want to sit inside and find somebody online who will.

I live off of my parents.
However, it must be made obvious that I come from poverty trash and that the pooling of our pathetic incomes are what keep us afloat.
While I'm paying significantly less than actually renting out a room somewhere else, I am still 'paying' for living expenses to an extent.
I also tend to be the designated driver to events and I do help with things around the house. I'm still spoiled garbage.
Ironically, they're actually somewhat dependent on me since without my terrible income they may not be able to keep the house they're in... they WANT me to stay.
I feel guilt in the regard that I'll feel guilty once I leave and watch things fall apart from afar; there's little to nothing for me here, though...
Of course, I'm not leaving until I can find an opportunity elsewhere; I'm lucky to have the ability to save money on a minimum wage and I'm buying my own car when I can.

When I was NEET after high school for a couple of years, I felt guilty a lot of the time. My mother kept trying to push me into the military and eventually kind of pushed me into my grandmother's care instead. I felt even worse that I was basically taking advantage of her, too. Eventually the frustration and my depression in general made me jump on an opportunity to move in with friends who were willing to give me a place until I was able to work on my own. Even though it was rocky, the shame I would have felt if I failed kept me motivated to find work and stay afloat.
However, there are a few reasons I was able to do this when other NEETs might not be able to. Even though I was pretty awkward, especially after over a year of total reclusion, I had worked past the worst of my social anxiety throughout my high school years. I regressed a bit as a hiki, but I was adjusted enough to be able to get hired. I was also only 19, so my lack of employment history was still understandable. (I ended up with a fast food job.)

For those older and who haven't been able to get past their anxiety, agoraphobia or other fears, the situation is a lot more terrifying. And the longer they've been in their situation, the worse it is. You may see your brother as relatively normal, or at least enough to be somewhat independent, but I would wager that he has many fears that simply don't manifest while he's in the comfort of his home. For example, I did give my grandmother any hint that I was depressed or somewhat fucked up in general, although partly that was because she would have just worried and given me an endless stream of irrelevant advice.
Really, though, it's only by being forced into a situation where one has no choice but to rely on themselves to survive that most can escape a shut-in life-style. Even those who may just be fine with taking advantage of their family for comfort probably have a few deep-rooted issues that keep them hiki at the same time.
If shaming him has never helped, I highly doubt he's free of mental illness. The best thing for him would be a friend who is familiar with the situation and could push him to make positive choices while being supportive, but even in that situation, you can't simply make him change. He has to want it. The only real "solution" would be to force his hand, and it's up to your family as to whether that would be a good idea.

On a side note: you should recommend he watch Welcome to the NHK. If he's seen it already, and it didn't motivate him to change, he's 100% got issues he can't work through.
