Should /sci/ be split?

/life sciences/ --- biology, neuroscience, genetics, biochemistry, zoology, ecology, botany, medicine, pharmacology, veterinary, etc.

/physical and formal sciences/ --- mathematics, physics, chemistry, astronomy, etc.

Basically, one board for
science that revolves around mathematics and one for science that doesn't use mathematics so extensively.

We already have /his/ for history, but I also propose we broaden it to /social sciences/ so it becomes about anthropology, archaeology, economics, geography, history, law, linguistics, psychology, sociology, etc.

If you agree, let us know on https://www.4chan.org/feedback
>>
https://www.4chan.org/feedback
>>
>>7840708
No that's fucking retarded this board is already dead enough as is. If you 9000 boards go back to that shithole 8gag.
>>
m8. the actual population who wants to discuss science is around %10. If you divide that up, the boards will be completely overriden by memesters due to their higher numbers.
>>
>>7840708
we should have separate board for IQ tests
>>
>>7840714
That's exactly the point.
Biologists, zoologists, geneticists, botanists, and all other life scientists can't post on /sci/ because they everyone troll or ignore the threads. So the life scientists of 4chan end up leaving /sci/ and not coming back because they have no place here. Creating a /life sciences/ board wouldn't make /sci/ smaller in any way. It would just make content more focused and less troll threads like "is global warming real?".

In the same way, /sci/ would become /physical and formal sciences/. With this focus, shit threads about psychology for example, could be redirected to the appropriated place. /sci/ is a mess because it tries to bite off more than it can chew. Science is huge and a board shouldn't deal with such distinct stuff like botany and mathematics on the same place.

Think about it and let us know what you think.
>>
>>7840730
Shut the fuck up, you super retard
>>
>>7840716
IQ tests should be immediately banned.
Propose that on https://www.4chan.org/feedback
If enough people raise their voices, it may happen.

>>7840715
A board that deals strictly with mathematics, physics, chemistry, etc. will be filled with elitists and the trolls will be diminished.

It would dilute the trolls across 3 boards. And each board would be elitist in its own area of study, making the trolls less effective.
>>
>>7840737
>If enough people raise their voices, it may happen.
This isn't a fucking liberal arts campus, piss off faggot.
>>
>>7840737
>A board that deals strictly with mathematics, physics, chemistry, etc. will be filled with elitists and the trolls will be diminished.
>implying the elitists and the trolls aren't one in the same

Elite != elitist. The vast majority of the people who post here are idiot wannabes who think they know their shit and think that they are better than everyone else.
>>
>>7840716
Agree. If is see again three iq threads i am outta here
>>
>>7840737
your maths is wrong. trolls outnumber the science people. they will always get choked by the endless meme posts. You can find memes that literally relate to any scientific branch.

Maths will be filled with homeworks, retarded hypothetical questions, maths isnt real threads and shit
Biology will be filled with evolution is le wrong memes, race doesn't exist / black peopel should die threads and wat if threads
The only board I think would be immune would be chemistry because there are hardly any memes about it, but other than that, it will fix nothing
You can't change the board quality without changing the people.
>>
>>7840716
Wouldn't get rid of all the shitty meta threads like this one.
>>
>>7840714
This. 4chan is fragmented enough already. There are like 10 boards that should be all be reduced to 4 or fewer. Making new ones is just bullshit. Go to ∞ if you want your special snowflake board.
>>
>>7840747
But it will change the people.
Where are the life scientists on /sci/?
Nowhere, because math ausists and trolls claiming it's "soft science without value" make them leave. You seldom see a good thread about neuroscience or biology for example. Just like you never saw a good history thread because of trolls. But then historians got /his/. What I ask is for life scientists to get their own baord and to keep /sci/ for the mathematical related sciences. That's it.
>>
>>7840759
You misunderstood what I said. People that come here should have been educated. They're not. Even I admit that I browse a lot of /sci/ but I'm not even a science major. I'm just here to discuss cool shit like hoverboards, drones, futuristic bots and shit. To guarantee any intelligenct discussion, you need to confirm people who post here to have a certificate.

This is not 4chans problem alone. All the forums out there are filled with retards. It's simply inevitable
>>
There are THREE iq threads on page one of /sci/.
Are all the moderaters sucking off dogs or something?
Goodbye. It was nice while it lasted.
>>
>>7840708
>let's split biochem and chem
>let's split physics and med
Fuuuuuu
>>
>>7840714
>this board is already dead enough as is
This is true
>>7840730
>Biologists, zoologists, geneticists, botanists, and all other life scientists can't post on /sci/ because they everyone troll or ignore the threads.
but this is also true.
/sci/ should just be more welcoming to other (soft) sciences IMO, that would solve the problem.
>>
>>7840788
>/sci/ should just be more welcoming to other (soft) sciences IMO, that would solve the problem.
yeah but then you're asking a 4chan board to not be asshats

this is kind of our thing
>>
iq threads are cancer, they have to stop
a strict moderation for troll threads wouldnt be bad either

a dead board is still better than this mess
>>
>>7840792
People shouldn't be forbidden to discuss IQ just because of memesters. Sure lot of them get into a pssing contest over their IQs and shitpost, but these people shitpost in every other thread as well. It's not the subject it's the people.
>>
>>7840796
iq is shit anyway
even without the trolls nothing would come out of an iq thread

but whatever, they probably wont be banned and this board will remain 90% garbage
>>
>>7840708
Absolutely, this place is a useless pile of feces. The Kanye West IQ thread is the latest example.
>>
>>7840822
Is it funny that that's the most popular thread since it was created ?
>>
>>7840799
>thread will remain garbage
One's trash is another's treasure
>>
>>7840708
OP. 4chan is not for serious discussion. /sci/ will likely never be good within the current limitations. Therefore, it is pointless create these other boards. If you want to discuss things properly, 4chan is not the medium.
>>
>biology isn't mathematical
It is if you go to a good school
>>
>>7840780
>>7840865
Of course it's not a hard line, and nobody would get mad if you posted mathematical and theoretical biology on either board. It's just some general guidelines to separate life sciences and physical sciences, that's all.
>>
Which board do IQ threads go on?
>>
>>7840921
/sci/ general
>>
>>7840921

>>>/trash/
>>
back off OP noone wants your 'split'. however, more moderation is always welcome.
>>
>>7840775
why don't you report them then and tell other people to report them, too?
only reason why i dont report them and why i dont mind them is that some of the test problem pics are interesting and fun to solve.
>>
>>7840708
the only ting this board needs is banning IQ threads and IQ posters
>>
not enough anons to split. this board is already slow.
>>
>>7841086
And so should it be.

>>7840708
Or maybe there should be a *serious* /sci, with strong moderation, and a shitpost /sci, for anything /sci related.
>>
Like most people are saying, no. Only thing needed is much better moderation. There's not a problem with the occasional stupid/silly /sci/ related thread, but when 90% of the board is filled with utter shit that only a middle schooler would come up with then something is wrong.

The board is supposedly filled with uni students and college grads but the threads are absolute garbage. Better moderation is the answer.
>>
>>7841096
>Or maybe there should be a *serious* /sci, with strong moderation, and a shitpost /sci, for anything /sci related.

That could work.
Write to the moderation here https://www.4chan.org/feedback
>>
>>7840708
>Should /sci/ be split?
your very own answer is there:
>We already have /his/
>>
>>7841216
/asksci/ and /sci/
>>
>>7840730
>Biologists, zoologists, geneticists, botanists, and all other life scientists
>>>/an/
>>
>>7840708
Uhh, anon.
you forgot psychology
>>
things that need to be banned from /sci/ with 1 month minimum ban for poster:
>IQ threads
>Ranking college majors
>le Engineers homosex maymays
>/pol/ tier shit about homosexuality and race and shit
>Homework
>"0.999...", it's an interesting question but it only brings cancer
>Blatant trolling

We really need more mods too probably.
>>
>>7841882
So much this. I think it is a comprehensive list of all that renders this place a shithole. Once these topics are banned we may find some peace.
>>
>>7841882
low iq fag and gay engineer detected
>>
>>7841882
I suspect the IQ and race threads are being spammed by people who want to provoke mods into banning those topics.

I agree about the rest, though.

The IQ threads are like pic related from /b/ years ago (I don't know if they're still there since I'm scared of /b/)

The race threads are a symptom of the /pol/ infection ruining 4chan.
>>
>>7840708
No. /sci/ is slow enough to be vulnerable to necrobump spamming and would likely not survive a split.

>>7840737
>IQ tests should be immediately banned.
This would help though.
>>
>>7841722
You mean neuroscience. Psychology is just an explicitly political exercise in justifying (usually fringe) political ideology, much like sociology.
>>
Everyone go to https://www.4chan.org/feedback and ask mods to start banning IQ threads, race threads and religious threads.
>>
I think a split could be good.

A board for actual, strict, science and mathematics discussion.

And another board for academia, university life, career questions, what other scientists do on their daily job, discussing majors, "what classes are you taking this semester", book recommendations, etc. All the meta stuff. But keep IQ and race shit banned from both boards.
>>
>>7842117

>>7840708
what about bioinformatics
>>
>>7842111
Why would you ban the subject ? That makes no sense. If people wanna talk about them they should be able to. Those threads get the most replies anyway.

You don't ban a subject because other people are shitposting about it. You ban the people that shitpost. That's what moderation means.
>>
>>7842620
IQ isn't a "subject" of science, it's just shitposting.
>>
Yo lol is that a weed plant in the op pic hahahaha bro im so baked hah
>>
>>7842918
Discussions about intelligence quotient doesn't go to anywhere else. Maybe if we had a psychology board.

Space related board should be good.
>>
>>7843014

Seconded. Unfortunately there would be "Space is impossible why even bother" trolls, but better than the buckets of typical /sci/ shitposting. We could try a /space/ general though at the least...
>>
>>7843453
You'll attract all the stoners and pop-sci manchildren along with dude ayyliens lmao people
>>
>>7840730
>Biologists, zoologists, geneticists, botanists, and all other life scientists can't post on /sci/ because they everyone troll or ignore the threads.

Oh damn, someone called me faggot over the internet... what am I gonna do?!

I know lets fragment an already fragmented system so I can have a safe fragment of 4chan..
>>
>>7841882
problem is mods aren't simply assigned to boards, they moderate the boards they like to browse, and /sci/ doesn't exactly get a shitload of activity.
>>
>>7840708
Excellent idea, please do it.
>>
>>7843459
ban ufos and reactionless drives.
>>
>>7840708
No fuck no. Everytime someone makes a post about a science/topic I don't like I can have fun by shitting on OP and everyone else who agrees.

I don't want to fucking have to crossboard for that shit.

Also, /sci/ is the slowest board on 4chan. Are we seriously making it slower?

-Pure Mathematics major

btw, anything that is not pure mathematics will be and is currently being trolled and baited by me.
>>
>>7840730
>less troll threads like "is global warming real?"
Is it though?
>>
>>7843721
>"i want /sci/ to stay as it is so that i can continue shitposting"
This is the best reason given in the thread for why /sci/ should be split up.
>>
>>7843739
Well, it doesn't have to be like this. All of you could simply switch majors to pure mathematics and then we would live happily ever after.

But no, you have to continue being 2 digit IQ morons. But that is fine, because I can also capitalize on that.

Also, no answer to

>slowest board
>>
>>7840715
>the actual population of people who want to discuss science is around 10%
and of those less than 10% have even the slightest clue what they're talking about
>>
>>7840708
No. /sci/ gets little traffic as it is.
>>
>>7840737
Feedback submitted.

IQ threads have nothing to do with science or math.

Yet there seem to always be a few. It's some kind of culture of self-aggrandizing belittling arrogance continually festering in a distributed manner across /sci/.

Off-topic and cancerous to the board.
>>
>>7840730
In my experience it's mostly memefags that do the memefag and IQ shit, with the occasional /pol/fag coming in here to do faggot shit.

People actually interested in life sciences usually don't come here because they're studying to get into med school. It's 16 year olds who liked "I fucking love science" on facebook and want to be able to download themselves on the internet to watch porn at "QUANTUM SPEEDZ".

I'd say that if anything math would need a separate board from /sci/. They're really two different subjects (albeit sciences rely on math).
