Eating corpses is generally not a strategy that will ensure your longevity. I may be mixing games up in my head, but I vaguely recall that cave spider corpses are among a class of creatures whose corpses go bad quickly. You're better off waiting until you have a tinning kit to seriously eat corpses.

praying is the best strategy for food. u can eat anything including zombies if u have a unicorn horn to cure food poisoning

You seem to be playing as priest, so that may be a good idea. I personally always saved praying for when I was a few turns from death, and food (even of the non-corpse variety) is common enough that I rarely got to starving. You're absolutely right about the unicorn horn, and you'll be able to bless it easily.

How comfortable are you with petstealing? It's quite doable with scrolls due to their weight, and while not very lucrative, it might be worth it in early game.

i'm going to bed. Anyway this shop has a ton of identify scrolls which I bought a few already.
and I've only had success pet stealing with a leash really. I'd really rather identify all these scrolls.

i managed to identify the entire shop reading only one blessed scroll of identify. i also managed to foolishly walk into a mimic but they are slow

i'm not sure when or how i picked up a friendly kitten. i had a little dog named Kabo-chan. i thought pets even if they polymorph keep their names? a lot has changed in the 3.6 update though..
