There are legal issues surrounding what they're able to do. They can't detain you unless you consent to it. I'm not even sure if they're legally allowed to use any type of force against you (touch you in any way) unless they (or others) are in danger or they're escorting you off of the property they're employed to provide security for. They can't legally search you, ever. If a store employee or security guard asks to look inside your bag, you're absolutely allowed to tell them to fuck off.

As far as I know, their job is mostly about coaxing people into giving themselves up and stalling people long enough for actual police to arrive. People will stop for them because they're "Security" and they have an implied authority.
