I said that I was out exploring the world and finding my purpose or some shit.
HR fell for it, the dev that was testing my afterwards didn't even ask

That's why a lot of programmers later go back to college to either get an advanced degree to teach, or get another bachelors in another field. You'd be surprised how many who go into psychology have previous CS degrees. It's easy as fuck to make analogies between computers and behavior. Cognitive psychology drscribes a lot of its core theories with computers.
