I was literally the first kid to hit puberty in my age in school. I never grew and am 5'6 at 18.

I do it because it puts me at the height of everyone else. Every male I know is in the 6'1-6'3 height range except my cousins which are all 6'5+ including the one in the NBA. It doesn't help that women look at me with disgust when I am not wearing the shoe lifts.
