I supplemented my income while I was working at Little Caesars when I was 21 and 22 by buying alcohol for all my underage coworkers. Almost all of them were high school and college students who were under 21. They weren't working to pay rent and feed children, it was just to have some fun money so they didn't mind my fee of $10/visit to the liquor store. They drank like fish. I made almost as much from that as I did for min wage slavery making pizza.

The drink culture here is sickening. It's not unheard of even today to give kids a glass of hot whiskey when they have a cold or the flu. At the age of 9 or 10 you'd be offered Guinness and wine and shit by older relatives at Christmas. By 16 or 17, only half way through secondary school for many people, every night out and party involved alcohol, people could throw back measures of 70% Polish vodka like water. My uncle works in a hospital and regularly has to deal with teenagers who got alcohol poisoning and have to get their stomach pumped. By 17 or 18, if you didn't drink you found yourself regularly alienated at social events.
