I'm white and I had all the different barbie characters that existed when I was growing up. It didn't hurt. Paleontologist Theresa was my favorite.

The more diverse Barbie line was definitely a good idea, but I don't think anyone would seriously want to invest in 250+ lb. Barbies with visible deformities or physical disabilities. Although I seem to recall there being a line of Barbies in wheelchairs... At some point, that stuff goes beyond political correctness and just becomes depressing.

It's up to their parents to teach them that. Even though Mattel has been producing Barbies of different racial composition for some time now, that doesn't mean parents are necessarily going to allow their children to buy them, so it's a moot point. I've actually seen my own relatives do shit like this with their children. One of my nieces wasn't allowed to invest her allowance in the black version of the Barbie she wanted. My aunt never explained why. She just kept pushing the white version of the doll on her, then took her out of the store without buying anything.
