Antidepressants have fucking horrible side effects and don't even work for most people. I definitely agree that it's awful how quickly they're prescribed in the US.

One commonly overlooked issue is loneliness, lack of proper stimuli, and very often pornography/masturbation addiction which causes symptoms similar to depression, mainly anhedonia, bleakness of everything, lack of energy, etc.

Then there are issues with thyroid or other hormones and the endocrine system. These also require looking into.

For the doctors it is more simple to give you pills than to dig in what could possibly cause your state. It is given by the whole framework of capitalism and our current economy and culture. Short term profit is the main goal, and blessed be the exceptions that are true to real values. Those who do the work properly because it is the goddamn common courtesy.

Then you can volunteer in homes for the elderly. Most often the volunteering consists of being a company to the elderly. Then you can ask for some training and get scrubs and do some work in taking care of them. This again depends on your life situation. I was prescribed SSRIs and antipsychotics in my last year of highschool and took them throughout college. I was off and on them until I stopped altogether shortly after graduating . In all seriousness, anti-depressives usually don't work if you have a legitimate reason to be depressed, or if you have some fucked up thought disorder that is causing your depression. They do however work miracles if the root of your depression is physiological and your brain has been fucking up. I'm very happy that they exist.
