I was just thinking about this today. I am a smart person and in high school I was also a good athlete (25 now). I would constantly play WoW and WC3 customs in my free time, never attempting to start assignments or finish them on time. I failed a few classes and ended up not graduating. In sports I stopped going to practice and because of academic probation I couldn't compete.

By senior year I had quit entirely and started to get fat quickly. I shunned social interaction and the only people I had any loyalty to were people I could play games with, the ones I was closest to were assholes and they would make fun of me. Started drinking, smoking pot, and gaming with them almost daily to pass the time in our shitty small town. Never focused on self improvement or trying to be a good person, was an asshole to others.

The kicker was that I wasn't even good at the games I spent so much time playing and I never cared about it. They were just a means to pass the time until I burnt out completely. Sorry for the rant, that just hit me hard.
