A lot of people don't actually want to work but are required to do so in order to survive. Others do it to maintain a certain standard of living that they want to be able to hold on to. Most people would absolutely jump at the chance to have a shitload of money and be able to retire early and live a carefree NEET life.

The issue that society has with most NEETs is that other people tend to be negatively impacted by their lifestyles, such as parents paying extra, government money being used, etc.

NEETs are fortunate enough to be able to live the dream life of not having to work, but this is what makes them seem self centered and thus hated.

I'm not gonna go digging for sources but it's well known that Socrates was a bit of a layabout and mooch. Other philosophers tended to be political types and academics (the line between metaphysics and actual physics used to be not there), so that could be considered their career. They did get grants and money from students and shit. Basically the equivalent of modern-day research teams, except with less sophisticated equipment and a lot more thought experiment rather than real experiment.
