A person's appearance is valuable data that indicates their genetic quality, and many unpleasant genetic disorders and birth defects are immediately distinguishable by appearance alone (FAS, down syndrome, that weird bug-eyed disorder, etc.) It would make no sense, evolutionarily, to disregard that information.
