As someone who just watched it completely in the last few days (I had seen the first 10 or so episodes many times, but never finished it), I still dont see why it's considered the best anime of all time.
It starts as a typical coming-of-life anime, then it turns into this mecha type anime, then it completely goes bonkers around episode 20 or so into this existential philosophical bullshit.. I think they only went that way because they ran out of budget. Episode 26 was a glorified powerpoint presentation.

Asuka never shows any positive human emotions, she is never once kind to Shinji or anyone else, so why is there so much fanart of her being happy and cute when this is in direct opposition to her character? Likewise, Rei never smiles or shows kindness other than to one person in particular, and even then it's hard to tell when she's happy, so why is there fanart like this

I did recently, in 2015 just like when the series takes place. I was amazed that at this point it was a pretty plausible level of technological development. Of course it can be considered a divergent 'timeline' from the year 2000, but yeah it was awesome.

Lot more appreciations for the depth this time as well. I was 14 or so when I first watched it and now I'm about twice that age. Definitely laughed at the parts that I cringed at when I was younger.

I feel privileged for the experience, especially being able to contrast who I was then and who I am now. May sound dumb, but this is actually a genuine post.
