i have literally NEVER actively listened to music before.
I think I'm missing a lot in life.
But how the fuck do I find out what I like?
you start off with easy listening stuff with very unassuming lyrics and beat. Chill stuff that anyone could like that you wouldn't be ashamed to listen to in front of your family.
If you play videogames or anime, you may find music you'll willingly listen to because you developed some sort of emotional attachment to the music due to it being from one of your favorite games/anime/shows.
Think of the music you currently like. Look up that artist and check out if you like their other music. Then you can look up their solo projects, collaborations and music similar to the artists/bands you like.
Hello, OP. Your post might be a "troll" post, because human interest in music is so common that a general dislike or absence of interest in music is seen as aberrant in human/normie culture. On the other hand, here we all are on /r9k/. So for discussion I will take your post at face value and discuss music!
Well, why do you care about music all of a sudden?
To begin with, I would recommend flipping around a radio dial and seeing what you like.
Some people physically cannot enjoy music or art because they missing a part of their brain that allows them to appreciate art. It's nothing pretentious. Some people just cannot like music or art.
also (taking OP at face value), do not listen to this person. He could call me a hypocrite for suggesting some entry level music, but what many great and august music-appreciators will tell you all the time is that they really do love the klassix(tm). Try this klassic OP, I really do enjoy it.
Hey OP, start with this. I consider it a song for which I don't believe anyone could have a genuine, invested disdain. The only barrier to entry is your attention span/ability to actually focus on something.
What group do you identify with in life? Often, music taste has as much to do with you as who you talk to.
For instance, me and my only other 2 friends in highschool were druggies, huffing N2O, dropping acid, and getting caught in the reefer madness, so we listened to a lot of Cream, Sublime, and Pink Floyd (typically their earlier stuff, fuck anything after Atom Heart, unless it's The Wall, which is a sober listening piece for deep thought)
Now, I listen to a lot more Jazz, like Miles Davis, for the groove and emotions.
I'd say most, honestly.
Prefab music on the radio is about as un-human as what was engineered for the proles in 1984, and I believe I could say with reasonable assurance most people don't take in active interest in pursuing music that is not featured on mainstream media first. It's simply too much work and if they don't have the interest, they don't have the time.
Find a song you like.
Check out the album it was in
Check out the band
Check out similar bands
How have you never been into music before though? Haven't you noticed how many people walk around with earplugs? Everyone listens to music come on
Try blues. I used to be a metal only fag when I was a teen and I branched out. I find the blues incredibly cathartic. When I listen it's almost like it nullifies my horrifyingly deep depression.
Here's some music i like for you op (taken off recent soundcloud likes), I have objectively perfect taste so I hope you enjoy
Don't listen to metal.
Do. Not. Listen. To. Metal.
Not that metal is bad. You don't want to do that to yourself. It will hurt your social status so much.
If you start to like stuff like Queen then enjoy it, but keep it private. That stuff screams weeb.
But the easiest way to find music is to find one song you like and make a Pandora radio with it. It will provide you with music similar. You can add more artists to broaden the radio. When you find something you like just write it down.
Not going to lie, /mu/core is actually a great place to start. Sharethreads on mu are also great for obtaining music. Discovering music is pretty easy on rateyourmusic.com. Also try out so /mu/ "essential" charts
You can listen to more than one genre. I have weeb shit, rap, metal, avant grade, and all that /mu/ hipster garbage. But yeah, it's good to have a couple of dozen bands/artists that you can admit to liking to your friends/family.
Mix in normie and gateway music with your hipster trash and soundcloud/bandcamp library.
DO NOT START WITH ANY OF THIS PLS OP.
YOU MUST START WITH YOUR OWN PATH AWAY FROM THIS NORMIECORE BULLSHIT THAT YOUR 14YR OLD FRESHMAN CONSIDERS "MUSIC"
Pic related is probably a safer bet except for Kanye's MBDTF.
If you want to act like most /mu/tant faggots go with Death grips
In my opinion, if your still in high-school/young listen to American Football. Good memories :)
Hell yeah man. Of course you can listen to multiple genres. As someone who used to write "music" into hobbies back in those shitty "getting to know you" sheets in high school I spend about 60% of my free time listening to music and doing nothing else.
From Zeppelin to Biggie Smalls to DeBussey. I love it all. It's just easy to get on one genre at first.
I recommend moonman.
Here are all of his songs. Lyrics are ESSENTIAL, time is set to my favorite
only 2 or 4 of those are safe for people who don't actively listen to music. A lot of these are music you hate at first, but start to appreciate after listening to it a dozen more times or reading up context. It's too extreme for people who have no interest in music.
/mu/core sort of shows you the "best" in the genre and you go from there. If you don't really take a lot of shit seriously you can find decent stuff.
If you don't know that then you obviously don't listen to much classical.
If you don't listen to much classical then let me just say that that's something that anyone who does would know.
Furthermore if you don't listen to much classical then why the fuck are you spewing retarded opinions on it?
I'm not the guy you were arguing with, i just wanted to chime in on your faggotry, i'm familiar with the major periods in classical music. You're a faggot because telling him beethovens ranking in the field of romantic period composers literally adds nothing to the discussion and comes across as you trying to show off a pitiful amount of musical knowledge.
Ok that's fine
point was he was good but I got wrapped up in autism and started ranking others, so I had to put in a category to be able to say anything
The problem with classical music is that if you say anything that remotely sounds like jargon you'll get shouted at for being pretentious. This is not my intention.
Only when I'm drunk will I actively listen to music
Only works coz you have to be inebriated or a dumb fucking normie to be susceptible to fucking music
Why is music so fucking important to normie shits?
Maybe you don't need to start with things recognized as having a low barrier to entry. If you're not one for radio music, try some of these.
