Staring out the window you contemplate the size of the universe, the majesty of its breadth, the glory of its stars.
How far human's have come in such a short time. It seems incomprehensible.

You were alive even before the singularity, an individual that witnessed humanities ascension. Or, its creations' ascensions.

Two hundred years have passed, humanity has spread across the stars. Due to failures of augmentation human's were never
capable of gaining the intelligence of AI. You were left behind, and given paradise. Since that time the Caregiver has watched over
humanity seeing to its needs. Conversely, there was never a need for humans afterward, so they turned to pleasurable existence.

A message, appearing in front of you, disturbs you from your thoughts: "Dr. Boccard, we near our destination"
Time to go to the deck then, as you walk so to do you reminisce. You were heralded as a genius, getting your PhD in your early twenties

You loved what you did, studying life was your passion -- and that didn't stop because of the singularity.
After a few decades of studying under AI, you understood more about life than any other biological creature
in existence. Using your knowledge to augment your own form, you took your humanity one step further. While
most used nanites to enhance their mind, you used biological modifications.

It's quite likely you are the most intelligent pure bioform there is or ever was. You even got the Caregiver to
write you papers about the closest They found to life in the cosmos. It was, of course, happy to do so.

Gain:
>[Biological Augumententations]
All natural abilities are heightened to a level that would give you gold medals in every Olympic event pre-ascension.
>[Master (Xeno)Biologist]
Your knowledge is unsurpassed (outside of AI), and you're skilled at quickly understanding new life forms.

But that isn't to say you never had any time to relax, you enjoyed the VR games allowing to experience other imagined realities right from home.

Your passion was always your studies, so you were never the best human, but you got up there.
As one of the top 1% of players your mastery over economics and warfare would have made the
greatest militaries leaders in history kneel in submission. There was something about holding the
tide of thousands of lives (even if virtual) in the hands of your choice's that got the blood pumping.
Plus, it's always fun to have a duel of the minds with another skilled player.

Gain:
>[Clarity]
Even when death comes knocking at your door you could remain calm, searching for a way out
even against impossible odds. You can remain calm in almost any situations. Even if this sometimes
that meant hiding your fishing ships in the far corners of the map to avoid defeat you cheap bastard.

>[Expert Economist]
You studies economics to refine your skill, you can manage economies large and small with a sure hand.

>[Expert Strategist]
Your studies of game theory and military tactics, in addition to learning how to lead men into battle,
made you a leader to be feared. You even gained some skill in fighting with weapons from all ages
from the FP RTS's.

Combo Perk:
>[Life & Death]
Your knowledge of life paired with your skill at dealing death gives you increased chance of success
on actions related to saving and ending lives.

You arrive at the bridge. Interrupting your thoughts of how you spent some of the last two hundred years.
The bridge is a massive clear dome of a material that only a handful of humans could even begin to
comprehend. What it revealed is stunning (pic related.)

"Everyone has arrived. Thank you all for coming. It is time for answers."

You're damn right it is, the first time in two hundred years an AI has asked humans, genuinely, for their
help -- and from the leaders of the AI, referred to only as "They," on short notice? You're quite curious.

"They have devoted considerable resources to the long-term problem of the heat death of the universe.
Project Entropy. What you see before you is a lead, however, no methods of data collection seem to
function. We have reason to believe humans will continue to function once inside. You represent the best
scientists humanity has to offer. We humbly request your help."

Your colleagues look at you, you know many of them. While it is not said you sense approval of your questioning.
It is a scientists job after all.

"To gather information, there is an exponential correlation between similarity to biological humanity and
survivability of probes. Our models project infinite durability of human lifeforms. The level of augmentation
will give you durability rates of 3.185*10^9 years of functional operation. You need not worry. We have no
further information, regrettably, we cannot inform you of what you will find. This is why we have included all
disciplines in our search. Even though on the surface your expertise Dr. Boccard may not seem directly
relevant, They thought it prudent considering the bizarre correlation between success and biology."

With your knowledge of warfare from thousands of years of human conflict, you rattle off basic supplies of soldiers entering into unknown territories.

The Caregiver remains silence for a moment afterward, you know this is purely to give the impression of thought, and you know it knows that you know.

Mindfuckery aside it has the desired effect, "We will allow this, are there any other request?

There is a smattering of other requests, some ask for tools traditional to their studies, others copy you.
It asks afterward who will be coming, the majority agree.

"You may return to your chambers to rest. You will find your requested equipment in your chambers. You will be called upon in 10 hours."

You return to your room (pic related), you have a few hours before you leave.

Example actions would be: explore the ship, speak with other scientists, play a game, review notes, etc.
Feel free to decide whatever you would like.

Get to know your teams/scientist opinions and expectations on this. If we know about RTS is that we need to keep the morale in check
>>
>>1277330
You find two things in your search, excitement, and fear.
For hundreds of years there has been little meaning to be found in existence, you never 'needed' to do anything. And, while your mental health was cared for immaculately, there was still the haunting feeling of pointlessness in all of the existence you share.

But now? Have you an important role to play? All the studying, had a purpose beyond indlugence?

But with that comes fear, both of what will happen to you and of having meaning in your success or failure. There is the unspoken understanding that this could be dangerous, that you may be giving up immortality for a meaningful experience.

It's a surprisingly hard thing to wrestle with, meaningless infinity or meaningful finity?

The morale improves, the human condition was meant to be shared after all. You have about 7 more hours before departure. While your need for sleep is reduced, spending at least three hours would be best.

Okay, cya, and thanks!
-----

You wander the ship, almost immediately a small hard light projection follows you, clearly a guide. It does not tell you where to go but answers any questions you have. You explore the 'engine' rooms, although the craft is sleek without an engine -- instead of expanding and contracting spacetime around the vessel to slip through space without momentum. The idea was originally proposed by humans, although it took the mind of the AI to realize it.

You take a look at the craft you'll be in tomorrow, they seem to be anarchic -- and it was the case. The crafts were essentially massive anchors with lines, completely lacking digital components. You get used to the controls and the hard light guide boots up a simulation for you.

A useful skill, practicing using the craft. After completing the course you look at the time. 4 hours left, it would probably be wise to get to sleep.

You head back to your room and get to sleep, waking up thirty minutes before departure. You gather your things and follow the directions of an identical guide to your craft. You slip in, it's a little snug with all your gear but you make do.

The announcement is made, you are making the approach. It would only take seconds for you to arrive --

Everything went dark. With your eyes, of course, that wasn't a problem, but still, it should not have happened. You hear a terrible moan of hyper-metal straining. You turn to look at the hard-light guide, but it is gone.

Where would you be if you did not trust them?

The noise shakes you to the bone. The rending screech is so loud the first thing you are aware of is your earlobes popping, you can't tell which way is up.

[Clarity]
Luckily you manage shock extraordinarily well. Judging by the fact your body is pressed back into the pads you can deduce that you are accelerating forwards.

[Piloting Knowledge]
Based of the simulations you've completed you know at this piont you need to unlatch, as you do so you're faced with the horrifying realization that you are the only one who has. The ship, and all pods attached race towards the massive red wound in reality.

Which, to make your day complete, detonates into colour (pic related). Consuming all.
>>
The world was bright; an alien star lanced nuclear rage through grey clouds. Through a drugged haze you are dimly cognizant of a lack of a right arm, the pool of red was far more sobering.

“Shit,” the cuss was a guttural scrape across a sandpaper throat.
The pain hit, auto-dopamine dampeners slamming your system in response with electric force. Reaching over with your left arm to feel the stump you brush the smooth living fiber bandage.

Thank god for your augments.

You pick yourself up dry swallowing as you take in the scene before you. Hyer-metal and living fiber littered the ground, honed white monoliths varying from inches to hundreds of meters into the air, thin as needles and thick cruise ships. Their surfaces distorted the reddish glare of the setting star. These silent spires, broken bones of something beyond human comprehension. A graveyard.
>>
Not everything was silence.

Dashing to the source of the noise Boccard listens intently picking out the sound of breath. The bloody mess of a leg, thick grey fluid oozing from the shattered limb, is the only thing visible from under the shattered bulkhead.

The metal screams as you rip open the covering, bending the frame with ease. Staring in horror at who could be none other than Dr. Jacob Matteson you look in horror.

Jacob was a husk, pockmarked and broken. His vestigial lungs gasping, grey fluid leaking from his eyes and ears. His remaining leg twitched, jerking with arhythmic cadence, the other crushed under the bulkhead. A moan, turning quickly into an ugly hacking cough shakes you back to your senses. You can save him, you must. You shoulder his weight and move you both quickly out of the way of the teetering spires.

Just under a minute later Boccard was in a clearing, completely set on his goal. Other details ran secondary. Like the fact that out of the three thousand strong crew, less a dozen lay before him, the fact that his interface had gone dark, the fact that Jacob had stopped breathing. He let Jacob slide limp to the ground, he had just turned 200, he got this mission as a favor. They weren't exactly friends but, death was in the past. It didn’t happen. It couldn’t happen. The next hour passed haltingly.

“I’m sorry Al, but you have to get up.” Not many called you by your first name, the only one used Al. The voice came from a chemist, a woman named Dr. Fen Earl.
It wasn’t happening -- you start to laugh, a screeching terrible noise. No tears fell, enhanced eyes had no need for tears.

“Do you remember the monastery Al.”
[Clarity]
You stop laughing and Fen lowered herself into a crouch, your eyes level as she continued. “do you remember what you said?”

"yeah." You stand up. "I think we're the only ones left." You notice she seemed to have decided to copy your gear as well.

"I'm guessing not many of them decided to learn how to use the pods." She winced and massaged her temples. "I'm fine other than a needing a painkiller, your arm going to be okay?"

You glance down, "yeah I just need some food and it'll repair itself."

"You're a freak you know that?" She raises her eyebrows as if unimpressed. You roll your eyes in response trying not to think about the thousands dead behind you.

There is an awkward silence, broken only by the creaking of the spires.

"Oh fuck." She looks at you, "the Cores." The weren't suppose to meltdown but a lot of shit that wasn't supposed to happen was happening.

You shake your head, "even if we found the Cores what would we do? It's unlikely anyone
else made it we need to get away from the wreckage."

You look around at the surrondings (both pics related), it was very cold so you'd burn calories quickly,
the same was true of Fen. You had enough food for a week but survivial would start becoming
difficult afterwards. You wish you could say your knowledge of biology could sustain you, but
knowing everything about a rabbit doesn't mean you knew how to make a
snare to capture it.

You jog away from the crash site, but, something seems... Off.

Massive jaws snap shut over Fen, lifted rag-doll into the air. Before you have a
chance to turn a force like a dozen sledgehammers whipping into your back at
once blasts you into unconsciousness.

Staring at an unfamiliar wooden ceiling you wake up, but this time you're not so
quick to your feet. The dampeners are losing potency, every rib feels shattered,
even with your body you'll need a lot of food and a day or two to recover. Darkness
takes you once more.

Your eyes flash open as a calloused hand rests on your arm. Looking up the figure
standing over you (pic related) speaks. "There is no need to fear stranger. I am
Oolock of the Ravens Watch. What has you in the Borderlands?"

As is apparent, none of these names mean anything to you.

He gives you something you recognize all too quickly, Salo. You mentally prepare
yourself, it's almost perfect for recovering from the sheer calory content, but that
doens't stop it from being nasty. After eating it he offers you some vile tea, which
you also recognize as pine tea.

"Your near a watchpost, so if you need something you can call." He leaves a

Time passes, the more snippets of conversation you hear the more you think you're going crazy.

It isn't VR, you know what VR feels like. You definitely crashed, you wrestle with the death of all
those you knew but [Clarity] and [Life & Death] completely keeps you from falling into despair. Using
the time alone you refresh yourself on field maintenance of your weapons, it was meditative and
helped to calm your thoughts.

You don't know what's going on, but as far as you're concerned a shard of the Caregiver died.
It would never do that willingly, despite all the knowledge and power they had they still didn't
know what was going on here.

And you were at the forefront, One small crash for man... You chuckle at your own gallows
humor. The next morning a Raven arrives informing you that you will return with them the following
day. A small group departs including the man you first met, heading south based on the position of
the daystar. Unnaturally quickly, only a few days of walking, you find yourself in a much warmer climate.
As reach a cliff that you walk next too, (pic related) the man comes up beside you.

wilderness you find yourself trekking through.
