I did my 4 years in the Army, and I always look fondly back on it. Man, sometimes I think about how little I did, but then on the flip side, what I did surely had to amount for something.

A lot of ANA died and were wounded when they were attached to my platoon. I mean, I know it was worth something. We had 2 guys wounded in my platoon, and 1 was KIA. IED shattered all the bones in one of their legs and they had to amputate one of them.

You do realize that with ASVAB testing, PT standards, discipline through basic and AIT and lack of drug use or criminal records that the military actively works to filter out the people in general society who are not smart, fit, disciplined, enough to be effective. Yes the military standards are low and they want everyone to pass however I would still say that the average person serving in the military is more productive to society compared to the average American citizen.

As a matter of fact I would suggest that military members are more likely to be "average" you won't get as many of the top stud athletes or intellectuals who will be amazing at their field but you will also not get the bottom tier either.

In my unit people who have odd MOS basically never actually do the job they were trained for and get assigned random details or paperwork or deskjob or armory. Basically if you are not actively doing a firefighter job you will likely be doing whatever else your unit needs for you to do. Since you will be on garrison and not deployed chances are you will be doing pointless unimportant work like cleaning or guard duty or endless paperwork.

It depends I want to be a firefighter when I get out and I am a 68W so I atleast got a basic EMT license which helps. Where I am stationed I can apply for volunteer firefighter when I am off duty and also get firefighter training and experience which would obviously help as well. However it depends on the unit and where you are stationed and the needs of the Army chances are you will get to your unit and do a random job they assign you and have to look out for additional classes or volunteer firefighter programs on your own.

To be honest though a large amount of active duty military is nondeployable and out of shape and not meeting PT standards you also have loads of people who get into trouble with drunk driving or drugs who are incompetent and you have loads of people sitting around in garrison doing nothing important. Training is a lot like college, except you have random military bullshit you have to attend to and you have to stay fit. The random shit gets less and less as you progress through the transition program but it's still there. Language school is rough and a lot of smart people who got through without effort in high school get a strong dose of reality here. Monterey is a nice place to be though to cope with stress.

Lots of dumb shit happens here. Just a few weeks ago, an underage drunken airman crashed his car on post which put the entire air force group here on restriction for a few weeks, essentially taking away the transition program privileges and making people grumpy. But our group does a decent job not having problems like that, only like 1 or 2 incidents like underage drinking a month even with over 1000 nps airmen. It has it's pros and cons.
