Classical thinking wouldn't exist if the church didn't preserve Greek and Roman writings and theories. The church was a bastion of intellectualism in those times, and indeed, it was one of the only ways to develop a scholarly knowledge base.

I'm not a Christfag, but I hate how much bias is present in entry-level classes and books about the middle ages. It's easy to rag on the Church as some great evil monster that had no positive effects, because it fits the popular narrative and fills up class time. At least when you get more in-depth, higher-level courses/texts dealing with a specific and narrow time period or particular facet of medieval life, the biases tend to diminish because the historians doing it aren't hacks.

You had unique painters like Giotto who did employ classical techniques like perspective and relatively realistic proportions, but for the most part art was like pic related, or Byzantine icons. It was only after the Renaissance when artists embraced classical techniques and started focusing on developing art for its own sake, which is why there is such a noticeable difference in art quality between the two eras.
