Younger people are much, much more open to foreigners, especially in big cities like Tokyo or Osaka. Now if you are thinking about moving there, my suggestion is to get a job with a company that does business there. English teacher might be good for a year but that isn't a real job, you won't feel satisfied with it. Plus people don't respect English teachers, if you want to marry a Japanese woman being an english teacher will not give you enough status or money to pick up a good one.

My biggest surprise about Japan was all the Nigerians in the Roppongi neighborhood who speak excellent english trying to get me to go to strip clubs (because I'm tall white and well-dressed). One guy who I got talking to actually had a Japanese wife and kids and had been living there for over 10 years, his job was literally getting gaijin to go to strip clubs and he is probably standing on that sidewalk right now. Oh and the Turkish kebab restaurants, didn't expect to hear a guy shouting "Nice kebab, yes please!" when in Tokyo.

I was in japan 6 months.

They don't seem to mind tourists or students. Only had positive feedback, especially when they realized you speak a bit of japanese.

In okinawa I found places where they only served japanese people. It was somewhat classy and I'd imagine drunk american soldiers would cause trouble at places like that.

In fact, americans on okinawa were pretty obnoxious and I only spent a week there.

But for me, speaking the language, people seemed interested and kind. Found a back-alley isakaya with all the numbers in japrunes (probably so murricans wouldn't understand and avoid the place) and they gave us free oranges and came out and waved goodbye to us afterwards. Probably didn't see curiousities like us often.
