Got a good friend of mine in the 101 airborne air assault 2nd battalion 327 infantry. Kinda quiet guy, talks alot about the army. Turn 19 in a couple weeks, thinking about on my 20th bday signing up, got a comfy state job and make damn good money for 18, but want to remove kebab with one of my mates. From what I know its 3 years 16 weeks for a contract into army infantry, after that you go inactive reserves, almost never get redeployed and reap benefits.

Air Force if you are smart enough to not fall for the Marine meme. The other branches give shit to the Air Force because they end up in a shithole doing ditch digger work while the Air Force has it made, gets to put in a 9 to 5 and then go home to on base housing and get on their computer to do free college classes or vidya. Navy and Coast Guard I hear are pretty good as well but I don't have experience with them, /k/ has a lot of military people you can try there.

I've heard that the Army is the worst, if you want to be buffing floors and picking grass from sidewalks by hand then go for it. The marines might not be much better but I've just always heard that the Army was the worst for shit like that.


What do you want to get out of the Military?

If you are going to join the military be good at PT and join into a combat arms mos in the Army or Marines.

If you do not, you will basically be glorified welfare recpirent wearing a uniform and wasting days of your life doing random details, guard duty on Garrison in a random building, and standing around in formation doing nothing and chances are will not ever do the job or mos you are trained in and will be doing paperwork and computer jobs.

Trust me I joined as a 68W thinking I would be a soldier and learn cool important skills that would carry over. The EMT training is very basic and only lasts a few weeks and after that in garrison my job is so easy that technology could easily replace what they have me do and pretty much my EMT training was pointless. Also I have to stay all day sitting around doing nothing or doing random details as a result of this job. I have probably spent more time doing SHARP classes compared to shooting a rifle.


Pick infantry or artillery etc. You will get to actually be a soldier and go in the field, go to ranges and shoothouses. If you don't deploy and go to a crappy unit, with those jobs chances are your day will still mostly be to report to formations, go to the gym and workout and maybe do some cleaning and go back to your room the rest of the day.

Go National Guard or Reserves

This is not the environment for Active Duty right now. Afghanistan and Iraq are done with no return in sight. Your best bet is to get deployed to Qatar, Bahrain, Camp Lemonnier in Africa, Deploy to Egypt getting the MFO, or Kuwait deployment.

Its go to basic, go to Advanced Individual Training, GTFO.

35 series (intelligence)
25 series (Commo)
15 series (Helo mechanic)
All Medical MOS
29 series (Electric Warfare Field)
42 series ([Minus the band shit] Administration)
40 series (Army Astronaut)

There's your best options to because they have the most transferable credits to college.

The Army culture is entirely ruined.

Many homosexuals are in, transsexuals are in as well. Political correctness is making it so they have to pander and cave in and accept these people. So this created EO and SHARP classes and people getting in trouble for saying offensive stuff.

Lowered physical standards loads of people do not meet PT standards, even with easier and cheating tape tests and trying to get everyone to pass on PT tests. Loads of people undeployable or on profile not allowing them to run or ruck.

Now females going into combat arms while the Army draws down troops yet these females get to keep the same lowered standards which waters down the combat arms.

Putting an emphasis on college for points as opposed to soldiering skills.

The Army and military has been made soft as almost all aspects of society have. Trust me basic training is very, very easy and pretty much anyone who is not mentally or physically ill and actually moderatly motivated can pass.

We even had guys who took the PT test about 6 times where it was made easier for them to get them to pass. The Army wants to pass you and does not want to fail people as it costs them money to do so.

Like everything else it becomes a trophy for everyone thing where the standards are low and where even if you do not meet standard they will try and find a way to push you through as it costs loads of money to train you in the first place and they don't want to kick massive amounts of people out for not being able to meet standards.

Also to the guy who is a combat engineer that job might have sucked as well but imagine being a medic in a headquarters unit where almost everyone is old, out of shape and on the way out of the military and comes in only to get profiles or to get out of work and your unit having you pretty much never doing soldier tasks or drills.
